Merging 2 hard drives

I am running LR2.2 on a Mac and currently have copies of data on two hard drives which I want to merge all data onto one hard drive without duplicating. Can somebody point me in the right direction to do this? Thanks

Paul, if you don't want to keep the component images, trash them or burn them to DVD and effectively forget them. But if you do, then don't waste time introducing parallel workflows or special ways of managing certain classes of images - unnecessary complications bite you back, sooner or later.
If the component images of your HDRs are worth keeping, keep them in LR with all your other originals and subject to your standard way of working and covered by the same backup disciplines. Maybe mark them with a coloured label, or stack them.

  • Merging two hard drives

    Hello All
I have a mac pro running mavericks and due to my iTunes library getting big I need to increase the hard drive space.
it's about three years old with 12 GB ram and two quad core processors.  I intend to use it as a media storage and have changes the hard drives to a SSD 128 for the OS and have two 4TB and a 2TB in the other slots.  Can I merge the two 4 TB to make a 8TB or is there another way to have a iTunes folder that bigger than your biggest HD.
    Thanks in advance.
    Kind Regards John

the simplest approach is to use the RAID tab in Disk utility to create what it calls a "Concatenated RAID set" also known as "Just a Bunch of Drives" [glued together end-to-end, no striping]

  • Merge 2 hard drives into 1 SUPERDRIVE!

    Hello All!
I have a Macbook with 160GB (personal) and have just bought a Macbook Pro with 120GB and am replacing the Pro with a 250GB hard drive.
I would like to take the apps (all licensed)from both Hard Drives and combine them and leave out duplicate apps. Is this possible with Migration Assistant?
I thought about using Carbon Copy and copying everything on the 120GB to the 250GB and then using Migration Assistant to merge the 160GB to the 250GB... Would Migration Assistant allow me to choose which Apps to sync? Thanks for the help!

  • How to merge hard drives without using Disk Utility?

    Hi,
Disk Utility has no visible 'Partition' tab when I click on a hard drive, so I am wondering if there is a way to merge my hard drives without using it?
A possible reason for the Partition tab not being visible is that my MacBook was set up by adminstrators at my school, and perhaps they have locked the hard drive so I cannot merge them.
Is there any way to get around that?
    Thanks!

Yes, you cannot Partition a Partition, even if it's just one Partition, you must Partition the whole disk, which may erase all your data... I forget which version of OSX it changed to allow resizing Partitions.

  • My husband bought an imac for the first time.  We backed up our separate itunes libraries on external hard drive but when it was retrieved, the 2 libraries had merged and they only appear in my husbands area.  How do we split them back up again?

Really need some help here.  We got the guys at PC World to back up our old computer onto and external hard drive, but our libraries merged.  I've tried retrieving the whole thing from the external hard drive but can't seem to identify any files to retrieve.  If I could copy the whole thing into my area, we could both just erase the things from each others' libraries that we didn't want.  We are imac virgins, and need some advice!

if it's content purchased from the iTunes store we're talking about, the following script will help to tell the files apart:
    Track Down Purchases
This script will examine each track in a selection of tracks or a selected playlist to determine if it was purchased from the iTunes Store and then copies it to a discrete playlist named for the person who purchased it, eg: "Steve Ballmer's Purchased Music". Recognizes song, video, and audiobook purchases. Purchaser information is gleaned by examining the track's file, which, depending on file location and access speed, can take as long a second per track.
for content you added manually (i.e. CD rips), i don't know of any easy way once the libraries were merged.

  • I imported pics to catalogs on different external hard drives.  Later renamed external HDs.  I want to combine catalogs and have my source (NEF) files all together on one drive. Can I merge cats and will new path to source files be correct if when inporti

I imported different trips to different catalogs on different external hard drives.  Later renamed external HDs.  I want to combine catalogs and have my source (NEF) files all together on one drive.  I’m not really sure how to get those source files back and get rid of the extra long path to where the source files are now located. If I re-link files to their current catalog (many different paths to files in same catalog) can I merge (import catalogs) into one master catalog?  Will the new (Master catalog) have the correct link to the source file?  If not, how or can this be done?
I have tried to explain my situation as clearly as I can.  Do you understand my situation?
This maybe something you don’t have time to help me with.  If not can you suggest somewhere I can get an answer?  I really need help.  PLEEEZZZ HELP ME.

  • Best way to merge multiple iPhoto libraries from several external hard drives into one, while deleting duplicates?

Problem: My wife and I both have MacBook Pros (MBPs).  We take a lot of pictures and import them into iPhoto.  When the storage capacity of our MBPs gets full, I have been moving our iPhoto libraries into external hard drives, which are now multiple (3 or 4).  The problem I now realize we have been making, is that once the iPhoto libraries were copied onto the external hard drives, we were only deleting about half of the photos in each iPhoto library remaining in our MBPs (because we wanted to keep some of the important ones in our hard drives).  Once the storage capacities of our MBPs got full again, I would repeat the whole process again and again.  In essence I now have several large iPhoto libraries (each about 80 GB), each with multiple duplicate photos, divided among several external hard drives.  And I am running out of space on my hard drive again.  So what is the best way to:
    a)  merge all of these iPhoto libraries into just one, while simultaneously being able to delete all the duplicates?  (or would you not recommend this?)
    b)  prevent this from happening again?
Thanks.  BTW I am using OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5 and iPhoto 8.1.2 (2009)

If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($30) version of iPhoto Library Manager
The Library Manager app can be set avoid duplicates.

  • I transferred itunes library from old PC to new PC. The content all shows when I launch iTunes on the new PC now. The previous content does not show in iTunes but folder still looks like it is on hard drive on new PC. Suggestions on how to properly merge?

Before you connect any device to a new library go to the Devices tab of the the preferences panel via Edit > Preferences (Windows) or iTunes > Preferences (Mac) and ensure the box next to Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically is ticked. You can now safely connect the device to your computer without the danger of media being automatically deleted or overwritten.
To get all your content off your connect your iPad to your new computer.
Then use a 3rd party piece of software to transfer your content
I have found Senuti useful but there are others listed in the article I linked to in a previous post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
That will let you transfer your non purchased content
For Purchased content log in to iTunes on the new computer
In Itunes Store click on Purchased under the Quick Links section on the right.
Download any music by clicking on the cloud button

  • How to run data merge from external hard drive?

I attempting to merge a large document (~4,000 records) in CS3. The document that I'm merging the data into is also large (an 8 page newsletter). I have exported the pages of the document as a PDF and the imported them again (therefore minimizing the data/links/etc.) but the amount of memory it was consuming was still crashing the program when I ran it on my computer. I bought a TB external hard drive and would like to run the merge from there so that it is using that memory/RAM instead of my computer's. I moved the indesign file, all the pdf links, and the .csv file that is the data source to the external hard drive. That didn't solve the problem. Is the merge now running from the external hard drive and still not working or is there something further I need to be doing to get InDesign using the external hard drive memory instead of my computer's memory? Any advice would be wonderful, thanks!

Tunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not available in all countries; apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this). Movies currently available in the USA only. Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
Select the store on the left side of iTunes.
Click on Purchased on the right side under Quick Links.
You can re-download your available previous purchases.

  • While starting my iMac after new hard drive installed, I created a admin user, I then pulled over a backup from an external hard drive that brought over the previous admin user settings. Need to merge to old user with the new user

I had to replace the hard drive in my iMac. Upon initial start up, I created a admin user name and password. Then I connected a WD external hard drive that had a back up of my orginal HD. Upon running Migration Assistant and pulling over the back up I found it pulled over the ORIGINAL user & security information from the original hard drive. In order to see iPhoto or iTunes libraies I must sign on to the "Old" user.
I want to Merge old and new users into only 1 user or delete the original user however need to have the iPhoto/iTunes libraies accessable by the "New" user.

Your best bet is to start over, by restoring your entire system to the exact condition it was in.  Otherwise, the transferred user account probably won't have permission to its backups.  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14 for details on how to do the restore.

  • How do I merge my photo's from my external hard drive into my iPhoto on my hard drive

I have 12,000 photos on my external hard drive, and i have about 1200 on my Mac Mini Hard Drive, these 1200 would be duplicates if i merge them, how do I merge into my Mini without Duplicating photo's

And as photos or as an iPhoto library
Which ever it is you have to restore them to disk first and then use them - how you use them depends on what you have - which you still have not answered
    I
f these are just photos then import selecting not to import duplicates
If they are in two iPhoto libraries for the same version of iPhoto then use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to merge the libraries eliminating duplicates
    What do you have?

  • Hard drive crash - Merge mail datbase

    Hi guys,
    Very urgently need help!
Last night my hard drive crashed running 10.4.11 Server, on a dual 2.0 Mac G5... I tried Disk Utility and Drive Genius - which both report the disk being fine. But upon startup the drive just freezes about 5 minutes after the login screen. I fear the main system has become corrupt, not necessarily a mechanical problem. I can still access all information on the previous system drive.
I have since started the computer from a backup from 3 days ago and is working fine. How would I access the IMAP accounts of my users to import the 3 days worth of messages that are currently on the other hard drive? I basically need to merge two inboxes?
Please someone say this is possible!!
    Many thanks in advance,
    Tommy in London.

Assuming default locations, your mails are stored in /var/spool/imap/user/usernames
You could copy the messages from the broken system's directory into the one you are currently using.
    There are some pitfalls though:
-You will have to reconstruct the mail database loosing read/unread flags
-Messages are numbered files ending with a dot. It is possible that you may have different messages with the same number, thus overwriting one.
    Alternatively:
-mount the disk with the broken system on the running server
-point Cyrus to the imap database and stores on it
-connect with your mail client(s) and download mail
-point Cyrus back to the boot disk and unmount the external drive
    HTH,
    Alex

  • Merging hard drives with similar libraries

    Hello,
I have two external hard drives with very similar iTunes libraries. The older one has some albums that the newer one does not, the new one has more albums from some of the artists as well as new artists. I have tried moving the files before and ended up loosing a lot of content. What is the best way to merge all of the music onto one hard drive while ensuring that a file with more information isn't being overwritten by a file with less information with the same name?

    Hello
The best way to handle this is to open the iTunes library that you want to use. Once that is done, then just import all the media to this library by dragging it on top of iTunes. Once that is done, take a look at the last article below to walk you through remove any duplicates and you should be good to go. Let me know if this helps or if you need further assistance.
