Message Import:  Welcome to Mail

I received a message import:  Welcome to Mail  -  To use the new features in Mail, your existing Mail messages need to be imported into the new version the first time to be imported into the new version the first time you use Mail.  This might take a few minustes.  You won't be able to use Mail untill the import is finished.
Click Continue to import your message now, or click Cancel to import later.
My question: is this legit or I am I being tricked into doing something I don't want to do?

Did you just upgrade your system, or Mail, if so then it's probably legit, especially if it's the Apple Mail startup screen.

  • Import messages from thuinderbird to Mail

I am trying to import my messages from thunderbird 3.1 to _Mail 4.4._ The import procedure suggested from Mail app doesn't work correctly because it leaves several messages without importing them.
I even tried to rename thunderbird's mailboxes to .mbox and import them again but the result was the same.
Does anyone know how to solve this?
    Thank you

OK I did manage to export my messages to a folder as .eml files, but how can I import then into Mail?
If I double click on each one it opens in Mail (default email client) and then I am able to move it wherever I want.
But I can't do this with all my messages... (1000 emails)
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you

  • I can only see the welcome to mail screen (iphone 5).  I have set up mail successfully because it shows mail icon with messages.  But I cant get into the mail box!

I can only see the welcome to mail screen (iphone 5).  I have successfully set up the mail because it shows mail icon with messages (104 messages).  But I cant get into the actual mail box to read them.  Pls help!

The received emails should show in two locations:
    1. In the All Inboxes tab of Mail.
    2. The Inbox for each mail account,
If your emails are not showing in these locations try quitting the mail app and then reset your iPhone.
Go to the Home screen and double click the Home button. That will reveal the row of recently used apps at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold on the app in question until it wiggles and displays a minus sign. Tap the minus sign to actually quit the app. Then tap anywhere on the screen above that bottom row to return the screen to normal.
To reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

    Help!!!

I called up Apple Tech Support Helpline and I was told to delete the HDD/Library/Caches folder > Reboot, and Voila! Mail starts again!
    However the next problem is:
Mail does not recognise almost 9GB of IMAP emails located in its own folder, can not import these .imapmbox folders, any idea why? Please Help!
Downloading 9GB of emails everytime Mail misbehaves is certainly a bit costly proposition, both money and time wise. Any solution to this issue?

  • "Welcome to Mail" message as a New Account?!?

    Hi all,
I have about 3 years of e-mail stored in Mail, but yesterday Mail 2.1 decided I was a new user: whenever I try to start the application, Mail wants me to set up a new account instead.
I had rebuilt some of the individual mailboxes earlier in the day (as maintenance), as I noticed some of the individual unread e-mail counts were off for some of the mailboxes). I had experienced two heat-related system freezes during use throughout the day that required a hard re-boot (I can't recall if this occurred while Mail may have been re-writing directories); I also did the Quicktime and iTunes updates. Mail seemed to work well before this.
The Mail folder seems intact (it is about 820MB in size). It's been awhile since I've backed up the internal hard drive, so hate to recover from a prior back-up).
FWIW, I've already tried running Disk Utility to repair permissions, and had rebuilt the directory structures for the hard drive, but to no avail.
It seems the Mail directory (envelope index?) may have gotten corrupted? Is there some way to force Mail to re-index the mailbox contents?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris
    G4 17 1.5GHz Al Mac OS X (10.4.7)

OK, I think I've got a handle on it now.
As you say, that "Welcome to Mail" message is an indication that the mail preferences file has become corrupted.
So what I did basically was start over, proceeding with the "Welcome to Mail" messages to manually configure settings on one e-mail account just to get into Mail. I had (4) POP accounts configured before this, but went into Preferences to try and recreate the settings as closely as possible.
(As a hint, it helps to look into the mail folder to see the sub-folder names for the POP accounts I had created, so managed to recreate the mail prefs set-up manually.)
When finished re-entering the account info, I closed Mail.
I then deleted the "Envelope Index" file, and restarted Mail. I'm not 100% sure if this is necessary, but think deleting the Envelope Index forces Mail to re-index the contents of the mail folder.
When finished, I had everything as before, including messages stored in "Drafts" folders, etc. Everything seemed to be as close to normal as I could hope for, so I'm happy.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Since Mavericks update I get "Welcome to Mail" every time

This is just one of many issues I'm having since updating to OS Mavericks. As a long-time Mac user, it is quite annoying. It's the first time I've felt like a frustrated WIndows user who just installed and inferior OS. Can I go back? Are there real fixes for these issues?
So, Every time I open the Mail app, I get a "Welcome to Mail" dialogue, as if it is the first time I'm using Mail. Here are a few other Mail issues:
No option to reply solely to message author when responding to group/list message. Now I have to compose new message and paste message in, or reply to group and then change “to” field.
Can’t “mail PDF” without opening mail first (or I get error message)
MAil often doesn’t fully quit although it appears closed in dock (I have to force quit)
New mail indicator doesn’t always appear on gmail account
Spell check on mail is now more aggressive and changes words I don’t want changed…setting for this?
I can’t reverse pinch to increase font size on documents/mail
I'm also having issues with Safari, iPhoto, and iTunes...as well as occasional glitches elsewhere.

MAil often doesn’t fully quit although it appears closed in dock (I have to force quit)
Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Getting "Error in sieve filter" message with each incoming mail and cannot recieve or send mail to or from iCloud account apart from Apple emails!! Please help!

Since approx 7am GMT I've been getting "Error in sieve filter" message with each incoming mail, worse though, since about 12 noon I cannot recieve or send mail to or from my iCloud account apart from I've been getting  emails from Apple (ie I've just received a welcome one from Apple Support Communities...)!! I've had this account for years, never had a problem - it can't be the OSX Mail server because the problem is the same when I log directly into iCloud. I've tried sending emails from my Hotmail account to my iCloud account (a .mac) and just get undeliverable messages back. I'm really in the s**t now at work. : (  I just set up a Smart TV yesterday with a wireless dongle - that's the only thing I've done out of the ordinary. I've spoken to Sky who are my ISP and they say all's fine with them (although the router kept kicking my off the internet this morning which was strange...). Router seems fine now though.  I'm really hoping someone here can help!!
    Many thanks!!

Do you think once Apple sort this out I'll get my missing emails back?

  • I have setup my mail but now it always opens to welcome to Mail page and I can't get past it.

I have set Mail and it worked fine before I upgraded to OS 5.  Now it always opens to Welcome to Mail page and I can't get past it. I tried just setting up the account again but it gives me the message that it already exists.  I can see 50 emails in the Mail icon.  How do I get past Welcome?

Try a reset: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

  • I have 6 mail accounts and today mail opens to a "welcome to mail" log ???

I run like 10 mailboxes and 6 email accounts on the Mail App. Yet today I open Mail and suddenly it pops the "welcome to mail" window. I know my accounts and mailboxes are there, but i can´t figure out how to properly open them?? any ideas???
i have important stuff in there

First in the Finder, open Home/Library and locate the Mail folder -- Duplicate the Mail folder and drag the resulting copy to the Desktop for temporary backup. Close the Finder.
Open Mail, and setup your accounts again, and if prompted to Import anything, Decline and Mail should rediscover the account folders that presumedly you found above.
But let's talk about why this may have happened. How much free space do you have on your hard drive, or if partitioned on the boot partition? If that is not an apparent issue, and if you were not using an application (such as video or audio) that used a lot of disk space temporarily, then might you have closed the lid on your laptop before Mail had finished its housekeeping tasks?
All these questions are because OSX can overwrite preference files when low on space, or if housekeeping tasks do not finish then the preferences may not be preserved.

  • Subscriber Message Import Cobras

Im having an issue with a few accounts.  I have about 800-900 accounts to import.  Everything is going fine, but a few are failing on message imports.  Im not sure if its because im doing too many at once or what.   I can select 3 for testing and they import their voicemails fine.  But then it will pop a message with 5 retries, check antivirus, or smtp configs on the CUC server.   I know SMTP is working because I can telnet to port 25 from the COBRAS workstation to CUC and get the telnet responses.  I can import a few accounts messages, no issues.   Is there some sort of bug with this on the number of ussers at once?  Or should I be doing these in batches of uses for messages?
    Thanks!

Thanks Jeff for the response.  Here is a snipit from the log:

  • Can't access import file in mail

i recently lost my hard drive and after recovering everything from time machine, i can't get at old email in the import folder in mail. it shows almost 3000 messages in it, but the folder is not highlighted and i can't get into it.
    any thoughts anyone???
    thanks.....jay

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop.
Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Mail unable to import and upgrade mail and will not open.

I have had a not so smooth uprade to Mountain Lion. I did a clean install because the first time indicated I had a hard drive issue. I used time machine to restore documents etc. This worked fairly well  However  my wife's account has problems with Mail. When I launch mail it tries to import/upgrade the mail from the previous system My wife uses gmail. However after going through the process of importing the mail I get an error message that the Upgrade failed because of a corrupt index, and to restart mail and it will fix the file. Unfortunately this pattern just repeats and I am unable to actually get mail to open. Is there a way to bypass this process?

I solved my problem, well enough for me. I opened the hidden user library folder using the method of clicking on the finder and typing command-shift G then typing ~/Library  which opens the user library.aI then trashed Mail from the library. When I restarted Mail it guided me through the steps of setting up the account. Yeah!

  • Import email from Mail to Outlook

I just recently upgraded my OS to Lion, and I am pleased with it so far.  I have run into an issue with regards to e-mail though.  I was using Mail for my default mail client, but have decided to switch to Outlook 2011 Mac for personal reasons.  MS Office 2011 for Mac was installed prior to upgrading Lion.  When I try to import messages from Mail, the import process creates a folder in Outlook, but no messages are imported.  As soon as I select Ok to start the Import Wizard, it will immediate finish with no messages imported.  I have spoken to another person and they confirmed that the import failed as well for them, they have upgraded to Lion as well.  I am asking if this is a known issue with Lion or just coincident.
Thanks for any and all support/solutions.

I just downloaded and installed Thunderbird to test importing from Mail.  I go through the import wizard and when I get to the end of it I get the following message
Mail was successfully imported from Mail
No mailboxes were found to import
After each import attempt a new import folder is created but no messages are imported.
As this is pretty much the same end result from using the Outlook import wizard as well, I want to say that this might not be a Outlook issue.

  • Import trouble into Mail and Entourage

    Hi All,
Just swtiched to Mac from a PC and I am trying hard to get my Outlook files from my PC imported into Entourage. I've been using the system where your first import the Outlook files into Netscape 7.2, transfer the folder to the Mac, and then important into Mail (eventually into Entourage).
Here's the issue: When I do the import into Mail from the Netscape export, only ONE e-mail shows up in each of my imported folders (some should have thousands of messages). I've tried several times and I can't figure out what is wrong...nor can I seem to find any evidence of anyone else having this problem.
I checked the Netscape export files and they are very large on my big e-mail folders, so I know the data is there.
Please help...I will be very grateful for any assistance!
    Warmly,
    Dave Stachowiak

    Hi Dave.
I don’t know whether it would matter, but I’d use Thunderbird instead of Netscape as the intermediate mail client.
Also (and this does matter), you’d get better results using Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to do the conversion.
Eudora Mailbox Cleaner requires rebuilding the imported mailboxes in Mail afterwards, but instead of rebuilding them one by one, you can re-create the entire index as follows:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see any other “Envelope Index”-named file there, delete it as well.
    4. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index — Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.
