Metadata Merge

Our wedding photographer sent us a few DVDs with all our pictures in JPG, but all of the photos on one of the DVDs had the date/time metadata stripped out of it and replaced with the date/time he created the DVD rather than the actual capture time. Of course, I realized this after spending a day keywording and tagging all the JPGs. I called the photographer about this, and he sent me all the corresponding RAW images which had the proper date/time metadata. So the question of the day is whether or not I can somehow update the capture date/time in all the JPGs that have already been tagged with the proper capture date/time from the RAW files. I tried importing the JPGs then the matching RAW files, but both kept all the metadata from the JPG files such as keywords, etc., as well as the bad date/time.
Any help would be appreciated whether it can be done in Aperture or whether it involves some sort of plug in or external application. Thanks.

    Sidney,
    Questions like yours present a challange for me
    I think I've come up with a solution. It is not too easy and involves a few steps, but if this is important to you, it might be worth a try:
    Make backups of your photos and your catalog before proceeding with any of my instructions !!!
    With all your JPEGs selected in LR, do a "Save Metadata to Files" on all your JPEGs
    (this will write - among other things - your keywords into XMP data within the JPEGs)
    Import all corresponding RAW files into LR into the same folder as the JPEGs
    With all your RAWs selected in LR, do a "Save Metadata to Files" on all your RAWs
    (this will write XMP sidecar files, containing - among other things - the correct capture timestamp)
    Close LR
    In ExifTool (I tried with ExifToolGUI), select all JPEGs and perform a "Import XMP metadata ..." on them
    You'll have to chose one XMP sidecar as input, acting as a placeholder
    Chose "-selected XMP groups only" and check XMP-exif to be used
    (this will write the information of your XMP sidecars into the XMP section of your JPEGs for all selected JPEGs that have corresponding XMP sidecars)
    Start LR
    With all your JPEGs selected in LR, do a "Read Metadata from Files" on all  your JPEGs
    (this will update the capture timestamp from XMP, leaving the keywords untouched)
    With all your JPEGs selected in LR, do a "Save Metadata to Files" on all  your JPEGs
    (this will rewrite a complete, consistent set of XMP data into the JPEGs)
    Delete all your RAWs from the LR catalog and folder
    Please note the following restrictions with this approach:
    It only works if your RAWs and your JPEGs carry the same base-names and reside in the same folder
    The real EXIF date/time will still carry the wrong value, only the XMP date/time and the LR catalog info will be correct. Looking at the photos from outside LR will mostlikely still show the (wrong) EXIF values.
    If anything is unclear, feel free to ask back. Good luck!

  • Some questions on versioning and synchronizing metadata

    Hy all!
    I am quite new to warehousing and Oracle Warehouse Builder, and so i would have some questions regarding on some common issues. I would appriciate if you guys would who have experience in this domain to share some good practice knowledge :)
    I am using OWB 10.2
    So first of all i would like to know if you have some proposal of the way of versioning control and synchronizing projects between team memebers when working on a bigger project, team memebers that don't work on the same repository (cause i saw that OWB has an integrated multiuser support for handeling object locks and user sessions).
    I saw that a way of migrating data from one place to a nother is using the import/export options integrated in OWB. This creates mdl files wich are some kind of "dumps" of the metadata informations, but the thing with these mdl files wich i don't think is a good way to synchronize is that first of all the .mdx and .xml files contained in the .mdl (wich is kind of a zip) contains many informations in it (like creation date, some timestamps, etc) wich are always updated when exporting, and if synchronizing these files maybee using CVS, we always will get differences between the files alltough they would contain the same thing, only timestamps changed.
    Then a nother issue with this, is that we could have 2 alternatives: dump the whole project, wich is odd to have to synchronize a single file between users, especialy on a big project, then the orher way would be doing for each object from the project (each mapping, each table, etc) an separate .mdl filem then to synchronize each file of each object, wich will be unefficient on reimporting each file in part.
    So please if you can share the way you work on a big project with many implementers with OWB, i would really appriciate.
    A nother thing i would like to know is: is there a way to generate from an existing project (like one created with OWB) the OMB commands dump (maybee in a tcl script)? Cause i saw that the way the exeprienced users implement warehousing is using TCL with OMB language. I downloaded the example from oracle for warehouse project, and i saw that is entirely made from tcl scripts (so no mdl file involved). And this i think would be nice, to have the OMB commands generated from an existing projects.
    I see this OWB projects like a database wich can be built up from only OMB commands and OWB a graphical tool to do this (same as constructing a database only from DDL commands or using SQL developer to do this), this is why i am asking about a way of dumping the OMB commands for creating an OWB project.
    Please give me some advices, and correct me if i sad some dumb things :D but i really am new to warehousing and i would really appriciate if you guys with experience could share some informations.
    Thank you verry much!

    Depends. Having everyone working on the same project certainly simplifies things a lot regarding merging and is generally my preference. But I also recognize that some projects are complex enough that people wind up stepping on each other's toes if this is the case. In those cases, though, I try to minimize the issue of merging changes by having common structural objects (code libraries, tables, views, etc) retained in a single, strictly controlled, central project schema and having the developer's personal work areas reference them by synonym, thus being unable to alter them to the detriment of others.
    If they want to change a common object then need to drop their synonym and make a local copy which they can alter, and then there is a managed process by which these get merged back into the main project schema.
    This way any changes MUST go through a central schema, we can put processes in place to notify all of the team of any impending changes, and can also script updates across the team.
    Every hour a script runs automatically that checks for dropped synonyms and notifies the project leader. It especially checks for two developers who have built local copies of the same object and notifies each that they need to coordinate with each other as they are risking a conflict. When a structural change is submitted back to the central shared schema, it is added to a batch that is installed at end of business and a list of those impending changes is circulated to the team along with impact analysis for dependencies. The install script updates the main schema, then also drops the local copy of the object in the developer's schema who made the change and re-establishes the synonym there to get back to status quo for the change monitoring. Finally, it then updates itself in all of the developer areas via OMBPlus. So, each morning the developers return to an updated and synched environment as far as the underlying structure.
    This takes care of merging structural issues, and the management of the team should minimize other metadata merging by managing the worklist of who is to be working on a given mapping or process flow at a given time. Anyone found to be doing extraneous changes to a mapping or process flow when it is not in their job queue without getting pre-approval will be spoken to VERY firmly as this is counter to policy. And yes, OWB objects such as mappings are then also coordinated to the central project via import/export. OMBplus scripts also propogate these changes daily across the team as well.
    Yep, there is a whole lot of scripting involved to get set up.... but it saves a ton of time merging things and solvinv conflicts down the road.
    Cheers,
    Mike

  • JBoss Can't find Oracle Driver

    Hello, everyone,
    I'm hoping someone can help me.
    I've created a small web service. I have one method which returns something very straight forward, and it works fine.
    I have then progressed this to try to return some data from an Oracle table.
    However, when I try to do this, I get an error back saying that the Oracle Driver can not be found.
    I am using JBoss, and am running this in Eclipse's Web Service Explorer.
    The things I have tried to solve the issue are:
    - Ensuring the Oracle driver is located in Windows>Preferences>General>Data Management>Connectivity>Driver Definitions
    - Placing the Oracle driver jar in as many lib folders in my JBoss directory on my C drive as possible (I may have missed some out).
    I am not sure what else to try. Please can someone help me or point me in the right direction?
    Any help would be hugely appreciated.
    Thank you very much in advance.
    Robin

    You have to put the path of the driver jar file on server.xml file. If you open up the server.xml file inside the config directory of the appserver instance you will find all the paths are added to <java-config java-home = tag. So place the path in this place. Then there should not be any problem getting the driver.

  • Defining what Aperture regards as a 'new' file.

    If I import referenced file from a directory, then something changes the mtime of that file, Aperture regards it as a 'new' file and I end up with what appears to be two masters identical in appearence with the same file name.
    The behaviour I expected was that a new file was just that -- a file that hadn't been there before.
    I've done this by mistake twice -- and now once deliberately.
    This is a problem.  If metadata has already been written, then each file must be checked to see if it is the one with metadata in order to eliminate the correct duplicate.
    (I'm scanning images for an alumnni school llibrary.  I have 20 milk crates of albums to do.  I typically will scan while watching the tube in the evening, then apply metadata later in the evening. Each binder is a 'project'
    I can the following ways to work with this:
    1.  Don't even think about applying any metadata until a project is complete.
    This way, any time I import twice, I can just chuck that whole project and re-import.
    2.  Carefully track the last file name entred, and make sure that I don't have any thing aready in the library checked for import.  This is tedious.
    3.  Create new folders as needed so that no folder is ever used twice for import.
    4.  As I add metadata, also give pix a rating. In eliminating duplicates, I just do ones that are not rated.
    Is there a better answer?
    Is there a way I can tell aperture "don't import duplicates" means don't import a file if there is a file of that name?
    If you want to reproduce this error:
    Import a folder of files.
    Open a terminal window, and navigate to that folder.
    Run the command "touch *"
    Now all the files will show up if you import from that folder AND have Don't import duplicates checked.

    I'm not sure just what I'd done the accidental times.  I think it was using photosweeper, a duplicate and similar pic finder. (Recommended, BTW)
    However I end up with TWO images in the browser that act like separate masters that both refer to the same external referenced file.  Not clear what happens if I delete a version and master.  I'll try that in my test folder.
    As to the other problem.  I used referenced files, because I use programs other than Aperture.  Which is one of the reasons it's easy to shoot myself in the foot, I'll admit.
    As an example:
    Import a set of files from a folder.
    Chuck the duds.
    Use external program to write NAD27 location data to geotag.
    Reprocess masters to pull the geotag data.
    Now that I'm aware of the problem, I'll just delete versions and re-import, and NOT assign metadata while a project is in flux.
    (As an example of a project that is in flux -- I own a tree farm.   Over the course of a year, I take several thousand pictures for inventory.  With this bug, I'll make sure that each day's shoot comes in as a separate project initially, and then after I've done with it, I'll move those pictures into the long term project.  Probably a better work flow anyway)
    As to the two cameras issue.  I don't have two Nikons, but I ran into that problem when I was teaching photography.  Most cameras allow you to change the prefix.  I had my students change it from IMG to their initials.
    In your camera case, to me it is unlikely that you would have both cameras iimporting into the same folder with the same number.  Still, this is a reasonable border case.  My requirements for unique file name would be within the same folder.  With internal files, Aperture renames them according to date and time I think.
    For referenced files imported from a folder a pre-existing name should be reprocessed, with metadata merged.  That would be my usual reaction.  But there should be choices.
    Consider:  If I moved the file there, I've ALREADY clobbered the old master.  It doesn't exist anymore. Aperture should detect this and do the right thing.
    More signficantly, if Aperture wrote INTO the file something like "Aperture imported on {hostname} Aperture ID 1122334455 or whatever string Aperture uses for a key for this image in it's internal database, then:
    A:  Aperture recognizes that some other program as been messing about.
    B:  Aperture knows that this file is already in it's database, but MIGHT have been modified. (And therefore should be flagged for the owner to check adjustments.)
    Aperture could do some things that are more clever:  When it suspects changes in the file, I extracts a new preview.  The new preview is compared to the old one.  If Identical, then the image is the same.  If different but close, and in the same project, the user is alerted, and asked   Keep both?  Keep newer  Keep older Keep newer, and move metadata...  Remember choices for rest of this import.
    As a more extreme example:  My scanner creates TIFFs.  A 2000 x 3000 pixel image of a slide is about 45 MB.  As a png file (exact same data, but better compression) it's about 30 MB.  I'd like to import, sort, change to png.  Instead I change to png before import.  It's uses more cpu cycles since I'm processing files that will be discarded, but cpu cycles are cheap.
    Part 2 of this answer:
    Because I keep referenced files and because Aperture doesn't track derivative files, I try to give my photos meaningful names, so that from the name of a file much of it's pedigree is apparent. If Aperture tracked masters by an internal tag, then derivative files would be a LOT easier to track.  Aperture could then go with the flow if I used a perl script to rename files.
    So, for example, I've done many canoe trips.  The first one was on the Fond du Lac river in northern Saskathewan.  So they are renamed FDL-001  FDL-002.  Now that I'm no longer limited by dos nameing conventions (or writing them in tiny print on the edge of a slide) I'm more likely to name them Fond_du_Lac-75-001

  • Merging metadata in Aperture

    Hello out there,
    I need to merge a large amount of metadata and need to make sure I do it the right way.
    I'm not sure wheter this feature actually exist in Aperture at the moment, so I want to check if there's a clever and foolproof workaround?
    I've recently exported well over 3000 images in a small resolution (600x600px) to have metadata added  by another company.
    They have fulfilled their part, so now I would like to import only the metadata (keywords and headlines) back 'onto' my original master files.
    How can I do that and not mess with anything else?
    (I did a test where I imported the small res. photos into a new project and all the metadata shows up fine, but  I don't want to merge this into my original library, without making sure  it keeps my original high res files..)
    How can I do this?
    Any ideas?

    Hello Michael,
    I don't know of any feature in Aperture to merge Metadata.
    What I do to transfer metadata from one set of images to another set is the following, provided the capture dates od the matching images are identical:
    assign different color labels to both the images to be tagged and the template images with the tags.
    Create an album containg the images to be tagged and the template images with the tags; sort this album by capture date; now the images with the tags and without tags should appear alternately side by side.
    Then I use the "Lift & Stamp" tool (Lif& Stamp) to copy the metadata from the images with tags to he images without tags.
    If all of your images need to be tagged differently this will be a lot of work for 3000 images, however. Then you might prefer to program an AppleScript that finds for each image to be tagged the corresponding tagged image and copies the tags. That would require a consistent naming scheme for the image versions.
    Regards
    Léonie

    what can I do ?

    Hi,
    Are you facing the same problem when starting with a new subscriber database?
    From the error message suggested that replication metadata may be corrupt. I suggest you drop and re-create the subscription.
    Then click on synchronization status and run the snapshot agent. It hard to tell the cause unless we check Merge Agent error log.
    Regarding the Unreadable Characters,
    change system locale to Chinese if current system locale is English and test the issue. A computer restart is required to make the change effective.
    Thanks.

  • Metadata Cleanup Merge replication

    Hi Experts,
    we are using sql server 2008 R2 SP2 on windows server 2008 r2, 64 bit.
    Merge replication is the topology.
    we have around 15 publications for 2 different databases. some publications require continuous sync and some are once in a day.
    so, the metadata cleanup and subscription expiry was set to to never expire. this setting is adding up lots of records to the three system tables
    msmerge_tombstone
    msmerge_genhistory
    msmerge_contents.
    so Iam doing a manual weekely change of the setting to 5 days (on Friday), and keeping it back to never expire on monday.
    I understand that, I can always keep the setting as 5 days and let it leave, but with any reason if there is no sync, subscriptions will get expired, and will removed.
    so I just want to automate this setting. every friday, it should change to 5 days retention, and then monday, to never expire.
    I even thought about creating a job to execute the stored procedure sp_mergemetadataretentioncleanup,
    instead of chaning these settings. but this is required upto only sql server 2000.
    so please suggest the best approach.
    thanks in advance.
    Cheers, Vinod Mallolu

    Hello experts, thanks a lot for your responses, and apologies for my delayed response(due to planned leave).
    there is a reason behind the question i asked.
    we have few publications which we are maintaining as schema only no data. it means, if there is any table alters, then only the change will flow. no data changes will progress. this is due to resilience across regions at schema level.
    there are few other publications, which are Reference data like country names or currency types.
    If i set the publications metadta cleanup value to 7 days, if there is no data changes happen within that 7 days, replication is marking that publication as inactive, and then deleting through a job.
    If i set all the active data flowing publications with the value as 7, and left other reference data / schemaonly publications as never expire setting, replication will check for the value which is longest, and delete accordingly. in this case, for all other
    publications, the value is 7, and for schema and refdata publications, it is 7. so it will consider zero, and it will never delete old records(please correct me if my understanding is wrong here). eventhough these are multiple publications, contents,genhistory
    and tombstone is common for these publications.
    this is the reason behind this question. it is forcing me to make the setting as never expire. if I put the value as 7, and no data flow within 7 days, those publication will get dropped.
    please let me know if you need more details.
    Hope i gave enough explanation behind this requirement.
    thanks in advance

  • Why is there missing EXIF metadata after merging aperture libraries?

    I had an old library and a new library. All metadata and files were fine in the respective libraries.
    After importing one into the other, I am missing all EXIF metadata like Camera, Lens, ISO, Aperture, Focal Length.
    Anyone experience this problem or have any ideas?

    FIXED!
    I waited this long for a simple fix:
    Select all the photos, control-click on a photo and select Update from Original.

  • How does one merge existing IPhoto 11 Libraries on an External HD?

    I have an IPhoto 11 Library on my IMAC.  I have multiple IPhoto Libraries on my external HD.  I use Snow Leopard 10.6.8, IPhoto 11 (v. 9.2.3).
    I am not sure how I got them, other than Apple at one point backed up all my files onto my external Seagate HD in order to completely wipe out and do the most extensive reinstall they could due to a malfunction of Time Machine located on a Lacie External HD.
    In addition, I must have backed up my IPhoto Library onto my Seagate HD.
    My question was how to merge two or more libraries located on my Seagate HD, backup my IPhoto Library onto the Seagate, and eliminating duplicates.
    I think I have found my answer after 3 days of searching YouTube, Apple Discussions, Books, google.
    It may be long and convoluted but I think I am doing nothing wrong.  I wish comments as to improvement or flaws in my procedure.
    From what I can glean, IPhoto does not permit merging of multiple libraries, that external programs such as IPhoto Library Manager and IPhoto Duplicate Annihilator are what most recommended.  In addition, Aperture vs. Lightroom were discussed.
    My solution using just the external HD's and IMAC for transferring photos in their original format (RAW, Jpeg, etc) from my IMAC to an individual IPhoto Library on my Seagate HD.
    1.  Locate proper IPhoto library, the one on my IMAC by holding the ALT/Option key then depressing and holding the IPhoto Application key located on the Dock until a window pops open, slide my mouse to the window to the line that says, "Open" and releasing only the mouse key while still depressing the ALT/Option key. This will open a window which will permit me to select from the different IPhoto Libraries.  If some bear the same name, a look at the pathway on the bottom of the window will show which are on the Seagate HD.
    2.  Click on the library desired to be opened, in this case, the IMAC IPhoto Library.  This will open IPhoto.
    3.  Select an image, from the Events, Open that image, Open the Info pain (lower right) noting name of file and file size, example CRW_0555  6.5mb a Cannon Raw file.  Click on "Edit" which will permit editing.
    Hover over image of photo and Right Click with Mouse, window will open, slide cursor down to "Duplicate" the photo and Left click.  A duplicate RAW file will be made.
    4.  Click on Info to close out the Edit mode, Click on the Date Arrow (Upper left of IPhoto window) to get back to the name of the event.
    5.  Highlight the selected photo or photos, File > Export, select "Original", not the Jpeg that automatically appears.
    6.  Click Export.  New window will appear, in my case telling me it will go to Pictures.  Move cursor to window and select via arrow, Desktop to export to.  The duplicate RAW file will now appear on your Desktop.
    7.  Close IMac IPhoto Library.
    8.  Follow steps 1 & 2 above to Open the desired Library on the Seagate External HD.
    9.  Drag the RAW desktop Image into IPhoto Library, either into Events or Last Import.
    10. Close IPhoto Library.
    11. Reopen IPhoto Library by clicking on the IPhoto App located on the Dock.  The last library opened, will now be the default, which was the Seagate External IPhoto Library, will open.  Click on the RAW image you imported from the Desktop, verify through Info that the Image name and file size and type are exactly the same, in my case, CRW_0555  6.5mb.
    12. Drag Image on the DeskTop into the Trash. (Empty at will).
    13.  You have now taken a duplicated Image or group of selected duplicated images which you created, which you have highlighted in IPhoto on your IMac, dragged them to your Desktop, switched libraries to a selected library on your External HD. and transferred an exact copy into that external IPhoto Library.
    Utilizing this basic technique, you can now do any of the following.
    Backup your entire IMac Library onto an External HD into a library of the same name.
    Take one or more selected images, highlighting each image in an particular Event on your IMAC HD.
    Transferring an exact copy of those Images into any particular IPhoto Library on your External HD.
    Transfer one image in an external  HD IPhoto Library-1 into another external HD IPhoto Library-2 on the same HD (by simply opening up  HD IPhoto Library-1, selecting photo, duplicating photo, Exporting Photo to Desktop, Closing IPhoto, Switching Libraries to IPhoto Library-2, opening that Library, dragging Desktop photo into IPhoto Library-2.
    You can identify all IPhoto Libraries on all drives and rename them as follows.
    1. Open Finder and locate IPhoto Library on the MAC HD under "Pictures", looking for the IPhoto Library Icon in the My Picture Folder (at least in my case).  It is simple to find, as it is brightly orange colored and as a description it states, "IPhoto Library"  not to be confused with the similar Icon which has a camera in front of it, identifying it as an Application.
    2. Double click on the IPhoto Library name and rename it.  I named mine "IPhoto Library IMAC-1"
    3. In Finder click onto Macintosh HD.  In the Search field, type in "IPhoto Library".  All of your IPhoto Libraries will show up that are on your IMac and on any currently connected HD's.
    4. I renamed them, example, IPhoto Library Seagate 3TB 1, IPhoto Library Seagate 3TB 2, IPhoto Library Seagate 3TB 3, IPhoto Library Lacie, IPhoto IMAC-1.
    Items like Library6.IPhoto of only 4Kb (when one opens "Get Info" in the finder, is listed as an "IPhoto Library" "Kind" of file type.
    When opened, it appears to contain full size images in a full size library, so perhaps this represents the icon pointing to the "Last import".
    Can anyone tell me what that represents?  I will not rename nor delete that.
    By keeping the names of the IPhoto Libraries, consistent, descriptive of type of drive and the name of the Library you have assigned to it, then simply opening Finder and searching for "IPhoto Library" and looking for the colored icons, one can see, at a glance where each is located (by looking at the bottom of the Finder window for the path which will tell what drive it is located and the pathway to reach it).  One will see each of their names.
    This saves me from purchasing 3rd party programs to locate duplicates, to merge and establish and rename libraries.  This probably will work well if I do no more than a batch of 50 pictures at a time.
    It would appear that I will only do this massive procedure one time, making one library on my External HD, eliminating all of the duplicates as long as I let them have the same first part of the name, i.e., CRW_0580, and simply making a search.  They should all pop up in my search.  I can add on additional suffix names such as CRW_0580edit1, or pano, etc.
    Does anyone see anything flawed in my above procedure?
    Is there an economical easier way?
    I am not sure I want to purchase Aperture, which apparently is overdue for an upgrade.  I may want to wait.  I may decide on Lightroom, my Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 provides for far better editing capability than IPhoto, at least in terms of exposure corrections.
    Pros as I see it to my method -
    Inexpensive $$$, no extra cost for extra programs
    Full manual control as to what gets transferred, picture by picture
    Cons
    Seems quite timeconsuming for a first runthrough of the 3,000 photos, both individual and edited.
    May have unforeseen consequences that I am not aware of.
    Advice is appreciated.  Though I have had this machine for several years, I am still trying to learn and have limited understanding.  I find written instructions hard to understand and follow, escpecially not understanding the differences between different what I believe to be synonymous terms.  I find YouTube videos informative but now answering all of my questions.

    The duplication is unnecessary. Exporting creates a duplicate of the file. So now you'll have a duplicate of a duplicate. Exporting is not "working on" a file.
    No it's not merging, it's exporting from one to the Finder and into another. No matter what lose something. If you export the Original you leave behind all the work you've done in iPhoto. If you export anything else, you lose the non-destructive editing and the ability to revert to the original. With merging you preserve that work. Yes, you can trash the old Library when you have completed the manoevre but no it's not the same thing as merging.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
    has details of the options in the Export dialogue. But in brief:
    Current gets you the iPhoto Preview, used for sharing via media browsers. It's a jpg, medium quality missing metadata. Original gets the file you imported, unchanged and then you can export different version of the current version at different qualities. If you choose to export anything except the Original you do not get a Raw. There's no such thing as an "edited Raw", and you lose the connection between the original and the exported version. That means you've taken a non-destructive workflow and turned it into a destructive one.
    The Tiff will certainly be higher qulaity and less likely to suffer generational loss in future editing but the file sizes are vast, often more than 10 times the size of the jpeg.
    Put it this way, it would be cheaper to buy Library Manager than the disk you'll need to contain all the Tiffs. Unless you plan on a lot of editing, I'd go for a high quality jpeg as a reasonable compromise.
    To be clear:
    So, I guess my new question is, how can I edit the Raw image and keep it in a RAW format that IPhoto recognizes so that I can reprocess without any loss at a future time, or is it that once you edit a RAW image, then it is no longer a RAW image?
    Once you edit a Raw it can no longer be a Raw. End of.

  • Bug in Excel's handling of metadata? Or at least a deviation from the Open Office XML specification?

    I've discovered some very strange behaviour in Excel which seems to be contrary to that documented in the Open Office XML specification (OOXML). I couldn't find a way to report bugs against Excel, so I thought I'd try to explain the issue here.
    In short it seems that Excel is removing, and incorrectly re-indexing the metadata I programatically associate with cells.
    First, a summary of the relevant parts of the specification:
    From OOXML 18.9: There are two types of metadata: "cell metadata" and "value metadata".
    Cell metadata follows the cell as it moves. Value metadata follows the value through formulae etc.
    From OOXML 18.3.1.4: The c (cell) element has cm and vm attributes which are both documented as "The zero-based index of the [cell|value] metadata...in the Metadata Part"
    From OOXML 18.9.17: The valueMetadata is "a collection of block element that each define the value metadata for a particular cell". "Cells in the workbook index into this collection".
    The valueMetadata contains bk elements which in turn contain rc (metadata record) elements
    From OOXML 18.9.15: rc elements have t (type index) and v (value index) attributes. t is a 1-based index into metadataTypes and v is a 0-based index into the futureMetadata element which matches the name of the metadata type.
    Here's an example of what this might look like:
    <c vm="0"> <!-- vm points to the first bk inside valueMetadata below -->
    <x:valueMetadata>
    <x:bk>
    <x:rc t="1" v="0" /> <!-- t points to the first metadataType below. v points to the first bk in the futureMetadata below (whose name matches the metadataType to which t points) -->
    </x:bk>
    </x:valueMetadata>
    <x:metadataTypes>
    <x:metadataType name="MyMetaType" ... /> <!-- name dictates which futureMetadata valueMetadata's v attribute indexes into -->
    </x:metadataTypes>
    <x:futureMetadata name="MyMetaType" ...>
    <x:bk>
    <x:extLst>
    <x:ext xmlns:x="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/spreadsheetml/2006/main" uri="http://example.com/extension" p5:value="test value" xmlns:p5="http://example.com/extension" />
    </x:extLst>
    </x:bk>
    </x:futureMetadata>
    The Problem
    From what I can tell, for values of n > 2, if you associate n cells with metadata, Excel will drop the last piece of metadata, and the one at index 1, and it will do so silently. The indices are then 0..n-3, and the association for all but the first (0
    index) will be wrong. This renders the future metadata totally useless.
    For n == 1, Excel just removes the last piece of metadata (index 1). If we try 1-based indexes for the vm attribute on the c element, we get different behaviour. This may not be relevant as it is contrary to the specification, but the slightly better behaviour
    might indicate an off-by-one error:
    n
    Deleted Indices (0-based) when using 0-based indices
    Deleted Indices (0-based) when using 1-based indices

    Demonstrating the Problem
    I have some example code[1] that demonstrates the problem. You will need a file called test.xlsx with cells A1..C2 populated.
    Compile the source as AddMetadata.exe then run with the test file as the only parameter:
    > AddMetadata.exe test.xlsx
    You can look at test.xlsx in Excel, Visual Studio (with the Open XML Package Editor Power Tool for Visual Studio 2010) or the Open XML SDK 2.0 Productivity Tool for Microsoft Office. Looking at the file before and after running AddMetadata.exe you should
    be able to reproduce the behaviour documented above.
    Summary
    It would be good to know if this is really an Excel bug or whether we're doing something wrong / unsupported. Any insight would be very much appreciated.

    return worksheetPart.Worksheet.GetFirstChild<SheetData>().Elements<Row>().Where(r => r.RowIndex == rowIndex).First();
    struct CellSpec
    public string Sheet;
    public string Column;
    public uint Row;

    If you create a metadatatype with a single metdata block, and you reference that in your vm/cm cell attribute using a *one* based index, Excel seems to see the link and it honors it when saving the spreadsheet.
    So, I ended up with something like:
    <c ... cm="1"/> (I'm dealing with cell metadata, but the concept is equivalente to value metadata)
    <metadataTypes count="1">
      <metadataType name="MyMetaType" .../>
    </metadataTypes>
    <futureMetadata count="1" name="MyMetaType">
      <bk>
        <extLst><ext
    uri="http://example" xmlns:x="http://example"><x:val>87</x:val></ext></extLst>
      </bk>
    </futureMetadata>
    <cellMetadata count="1">
      <bk><rc
    t="1" v="0"/></bk> <!-- this is what gets referenced as cm=1 on the cell -->
    </cellMetadata>
    Hope this helps.

  • HT1420 How can I merge one iTunes account into my other one. I have a work laptop that I've had one library one (work email address) and I also have a home library iTunes account (gmail address) but I want it all under one accnt.

    I have two iTunes libraries (one under my gmail address and one under my work email address). My work laptop is usually how I access my account and in the past 3 months that laptop has had to be replaced twice, causing me to redo my entire library. Each time, the laptop was not deauthorized, of course and I had to go through all that rigamarole. I have all of my music backed up and am able to also retrieve anything purchased over the years from the cloud, but once i get it set up and authorize the laptop to both of the email address accounts, some of the items that are in the gmail library will not play. It says that it cannot locate. At one point, a friend spent a lot of time getting it to finally recognize everything (a lot of that music that said cannot locate was from burned CD's or mp3s downloaded, not purchased from iTunes). So there is that issue and I'm not sure how to fix that.
    The other thing is that I would like to have ALL of my items under one iTunes account (my personal gmail) in the event that i no longer work for this company and have no access to that email address as it will be turned off. How can I remove one email and merge all purchases over to the gmail address account?
    Thanks!

    You cannot combine actual accounts (as in iTunes Store account).
    You can combine the music into a single iTunes collection on a computer.  There's many ways to do this.   There are some utilities to assist with keeping maximum metadata (ratings, playcount, etc.) but I am not familiar with Windows platform ones to do this, though I am sure a web search of merge iTunes library would uncover some.

  • How can I merge libraries

    I have several iPhoto libraries. How can I merge them?

    Thanks, Terence ..when I've a while to spare, and can cope with the trepidation (..will it keep Albums organised? ..will it keep metadata? etc..) I'll have a try with Aperture (on a couple of teeny Libraries) and see what happens.
    For now, iPhoto Library Manager is doing the job PERFECTLY, and even copes gracefully with error messages and alerts from iPhoto - without seizing up, quitting, or giving up. VERY reliable .."I'm impressed.." (as Deckard says in Blade Runner).
