Microsoft Word vs. Pages..?

I'm in need of some feedback of Apple user experience in using Word vs. Pages?
I was used to AppleWorks until it was discontinued and been trying to use Word
as many people (PC/MAC users) use it as a standard word processing program.
But I'm not really grasping Word as it comes across as a comprehensive program to work through.
Hence classes are being taught on how to use this program.
I would love to use Pages instead but I'm concerned about cross compatibiltiy when saving Page documents
into Word. Are there any issues that could arise when saving files from Pages to Word?
I'm a photographer and would mainly use Word for invoicing and creating a spreadsheet but that has proven
difficult for me. I'm too much of a visually oriented person to sort the logic out in Word.
Look forward to hearing your experience with both programs. thanks in advance ~A~

I am a longtime user of both programs. I am a writer and use word for my book work and pages for a couple of teaching guides I prepare for a magazine. I wish there was a compelling reason to move to pages 09 just because I would like to support apple products, but for me with my regular writing work, there are no real reasons to switch. Word works fine, and even better in some ways: I prefer its spell checking and grammar suggestions and the way it handles them; it has autosave, which pages doesn't (a third party freeware program called Eversave works fine though); it does a much better job of remembering window size; adding headers and footers is easy or not that much more difficult than pages does it to make a difference. Word generally works, and the type looks fine on the screen.
The big difference, of course, is expense, but I already own word. If I were considering whether to buy one or the other, I'd give them both a try and see. I think Pages full screen option works better (although the black on the sides is pretty intense), but while I'm generally not a Microsoft fan, I have to say that for someone who uses the latest version of Word hours a day, it does just fine and looks good too.

Dante font used in manuscript … when I try to save as a pdf document in Microsoft Word whole pages change their look, with wide gaps forming between certain paragraphs or sections. This does not happen with other fonts.

    OK, we've got it!
What is happening is that when you use Microsoft's save as PDF in Word, the font isn't embedded even though the font is tagged to allow embedding. Furthermore, Microsoft doesn't properly put the font name into the PDF file such that Acrobat or Reader can readily find the font installed on your system such that the text can be properly displayed and/or printed. Acrobat and Reader attempt to display and/or print the text using a “substitution font” and of course, as they say, YMMV (“your mileage may vary”)!
I personally submitted the report of this problem (both the embedding and the font name problem) to Microsoft. They acknowledge the bug, tried a fix and provided me a build with it, but it wasn't right. Maybe they will ultimately fix it, maybe they won't. We don't know yet. We do know that if it is fixed, it will be fixed only for Office 2013 (problem occurs with all Office applications since they use the same PDF generation code) and thus such a fix won't help you.
Adobe Acrobat Standard and Acrobat Pro  both provide an Adobe PDFMaker plug-in to Office applications (including full support for Office 2010) that adds an Acrobat Toolbar as well as a Save as Adobe PDF menu item. The resultant PDF file fully supports embedding of OpenType CFF, TrueType, and Type 1 fonts and in many other ways produces much superior PDF with a full range of PDF generation options not available with the Microsoft PDF. (Note that beginning with Office 2013, Microsoft does not support Type 1 fonts in Office documents at all, even for existing documents!) The Acrobat Office functions are widely used and respected in the end user community and whatever “issues” there are (all software has “issues” of some type - it is a matter of how many and how severe), you should be in much better shape for PDF production that with what you currently are using.
Good luck and let us know if this resolves your problems. (Note that you can download and install a free fully-functional 30 trial of Acrobat Pro to assure that it meets your needs! You can then buy a license and activate what you already have installed.)

  • Converting from Microsoft Word to Pages and removing formatting

I have a huge document in Word that needs serious text editing.  I need to remove the formatting and do a simple text edit in Pages. I am relatively new to mac and am on a steep learning curve after 15 years in Microsoft Word and before that Corel! I think I am complicating the issue unnecessarily - I hope someone can give me some simple guidance.

Probably the fastest and surest way is to open the Word file in TextEdit:
Menu > Format > Make Plain Text > Save > Unicode UTF (.txt)
Then Copy and Paste that into Pages or:
Menu > Insert > Choose… > browse to .txt file

  • Transition from Microsoft Word to Pages

Can I set up Pages simply as a word processor? I'm a former Microsoft Word user, and I'm having a difficult time making the transition to Pages for simple documents.

Pages is both a Word Processor, DTP and Spreadsheet application.
    Ms Word is similar.
Just open a blank document and type away. Where are you hitting problems?

PS For simple WP documents use TextEdit or Bean [free]

  • Microsoft word and pages

when i open microsoft word doc in pages the format is all out

Pages is not a Word clone and does not open Word files perfectly.
It depends on what layout they have in common and possibly in your case whether a font was substituted.

  • Microsoft Word same page Opens

When I open Microsoft Word on my Mac, the same document appears every time. I've tried selecting File-New Blank Document and the document will appear on the new window. I've also deleted the document from the computer and emptied it in the trash.
    What can I do??

    Have you tried the following:
In Word, click on File>Open and then navigate to [your user
    account]/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/ and
open the file called Normal.dotm. This is the template file on which any
new document is generally based; if you delete the text from that file and
save afterward, newly created documents should be blank again.

  • How to copy and paste a document typed in the EpicWrite (esp. a text typed in Kannada)on a Microsoft Word 2007 page?

    02-03-2012
For last one week, I have been trying in vain to copy and paste a document typed in the Epic Write on a Word 2007 format, so that I can retrieve or modify it anytime without depending on the Internet connection. Whenever, I paste on a webpage, it cannot be edited and when I transfer that on a Word page, only words & figures in English appear and the rest of the text is displayed in blank square boxes.
How I can overcome this problem?

    Are that pages in Unicode?

  • Opening .doc and .docx files ( from Microsoft Word ) in Pages '09

I am running Pages '09 on a 2 gHz Intel Core Duo iMac running OSX10.6.8 (the latest version of Snow Leopard as far as I'm aware).  I regularly receive attachments from friends and from work that have these suffixes but inspite of using Get Info and then nominating Pages as the software to open these files with, it keeps saying "The document blah blah blah couldn't be opened"
    Help please!

If you're not running the latest versions of the iWork apps installed from a retail box or the downloaded trial & Software Update says your software is up to date, make sure the applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. If you installed from the downloaded trial or the retail box, they must be in the iWork '09 folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '09. If it doesn't have the '09 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work.

  • My pages is showing error while opening a document in microsoft word format. Please help

While trying to open documents in microsoft word format, pages is showing an error. It is unable to complete the task and is requesting me to reopen pages but then no response. However I am able to work on pages format. Please help.
    thanks

When you open a Word document in Pages, it is translated into the internal .pages document format — and you are no longer working in the original Word document format. This translation also occurs in reverse when exporting a document back to Word. When you open a Word document in Pages, if it has issues with the translation (missing font characteristics, other issues), it will open a warning dialog box and display these issues for you.
If however, you prefer to always work in the native Word document format, and not risk translation issues, then you should be using MS Word in Office for Mac 2011 with the latest update.

  • Pages '08 to Microsoft Word '04

I have pages '08 and i was wondering if i could print out a document from pages from the application microsoft word '03
Is there a setting i have to change on page to do this?

    2 methods:
Menu > File > Save As… > Save copy as… (bottom of window) : Word Document
    or
    Menu > File > Export… > Word
It may help to download and read the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf and view the Video Tutorials both from under the Help menu.
This is also a good resource.

  • When I'm on microsoft word and typing and get to the  bottom of the page a new page doesn't just come up, i have to manually put it there so then when i go back and add stuff to the first page i loose whatever was at the bottom. how do i stop this?

When I'm on microsoft word on my macbook air and get to the bottom a the page, a new page does not come up. i have to manually insert one. so then when i go back to edit my work and add something in what ever was at the bottom of the page disappears. how can i stop this from happening or change it so a new page opens by itself?

It sounds like you have chosen a publishing template rather than a word processing template. There are two basic modes in MS Word: word processing and publishing layout. Word processing mode (and all word processing templates) have a continuous text box in the page for writing text. The publishing layout mode (and publishing templates) are documents that have text boxes placed for articles, titles, pictures, etc. Be sure to choose the word document template and you’ll get what you expect. Do not choose the word publishing document.

  • Microsoft Word-Table of Contents-Update Page Numbers

I am having trouble updating my page numbers within the Table of Contents in a Microsoft Word document. On a Windows machine, I would click to the left of the table and then click F9. On an Apple, that adjusts the brightness of the screen or modifies the screen if I accompany the F9 with the Apple or Function button. Does anyone know how to update the page numbers without creating a new Table of Contents?

In Mac OSX it is possible to change or create keyboard shortcuts for all applications as well as the system itself.
Go to +System Preferences > Keyboard and Mouse > Keyboard shortcuts+
Select the menu item for whatever application, in this case Dock, Exposé and Dashboard, click on the keyboard shortcut and change it to whatever you would like.
It will then work the next time you launch the application. If it is a menu item the name of the shortcut must match the menu name exactly.

  • Can you open with Pages documents that were created in a 2004 version of Microsoft word for Mac?

Can you open in Pages documents that were created in a 2004 version of Microsoft Word for Mac?

Pages '09 will open .doc files from Word 2004. The Mac OS is not what is in question. Pages '09 opens Word 2004 documents and if the same version of Pages will run in Lion and in Mountain Lion ..... Thats all that matters.
I trust you were using MS Office 2004 and would now like to buy Pages?

Can I safely send the Word Office icons and anything else related to it that shows up in spotlight to the trash?
You mean for Office apps? That, I don't know for sure as I don't use MS Office on my Mac. I would check to see if there is some sort of MS Office uninstaller that needs to be run before dragging the icons to Trash. Either from one of the Office apps Help or About or search the Internet for a solution.
EDIT: A quick Google search found this link which may help you.
