Middle Tier Load Balancing

We're using Cisco IOS SLB for MTS connections. The problem is that if a server goes offline, users have to reboot to connect to the other. Were pursuing a feature in IOS SLB which provides stateful failover.
The question is, once the client attaches to MTS, does the workstation agent use the original address/hostname, or does it detect the host name and address and replace the load balanced server ID?
Is there client side configuration to support load balancing MTS?

Normally I've seen this done via a DNS Address that represents the L4
Switch, so the DNS Address of MT Server would not actually change.
One issue you may be seeing is that if the IP Address the DNS name resolves
does change, the workstation will not see the change because XP caches DNS
results for up to 24hrs.
A Reboot or "ipconfig /dnsflush" would be required. This is generally an
issue more with DNS Round-Robin than L4 Switches.

  • Load balancing multiple SSO mid-tier with single SSO database

I want to load balance SSO middle tier servers and have them access a single SSO database. When you install infrastructure and select SSO only it creates a new infrastructure database. How can I install multiple SSO servers and point them to a single database. I am doing Load Balancing with F5 and read an Oracle WP where they mentioned an Oracle supported configuration where they load balanced SSO servers with F5.
    KB

    Two possible solutions:
1.) Oracle 10gAS Enterprise Deployment Guide (B13998-03) follow the configuration for SSO configuration in Chapter 5.
2.) I have not tried this but it should be logically possible with the SSO. 10gAS Administrators guide (B13995-05) Part III Advanced Administration. The success of this method assumes you have OID and SSO each installed in separate homes. You would be cloning the SSO home to another box as if it were a middle tier (it is still part of the infrastructure) then re-configuring it on the new box.
Personally solution 1 is the best method. We are using F5 Big-IP with this configuration and it is working great.
    Hope this helps!

  • Load Balancing to 2 Instances in a 4-Tier System

    Problem:
I need to load balance requests from a cluster of JRun JSP servers through
an IP(IP2) to a set of servers on tier3 containing 2 instances per box, that
are not clustered. I have used WLBS to proxy through IP2 to each machine in

on each of the dual processor Win2k boxes. Does anyone know? I have 2 IPs on
each box but WLBS won't proxy to 2 IPs on the same box. I am looking for a

  • CSM(content switching module) supports the 2 tier server load balance ?

    hi everyone,
Does any know the CSM support 2 tier server load balance ?
this means that CSM perform the server load balance for servers and the same servers require another time Server load balance. In the other word,
the CSM supports server port and client port for server load balance ?
    thanks
    fred.

Hi, this seems to describe a typical case of multi-tier design where the CSM needs to handle 2 types of connections:
    1. clients->CSM->serverfarm1
    2. serverfarm1->CSM->serverfarm2
We usually refer to the second type of connections as server-to-server load balanced traffic.
There is no problem in handling that scenario with the CSM and you have a few options.
In particular, each virtual server on the CSM can be configured to only accept incoming connections from a specific VLAN, so you can use that as an additional security measure or to distinguish connections based on which VLAN they come in from.
If you want to, you could even configure the CSM with 2 virtual servers with the same exact virtual IP and L4 port, but listening on 2 separate VLANs (the client-side VLAN and serverfarm1 VLAN) and use a different server farm based on that.
One important thing to keep in mind when handling server-to-server load balanced connections: if serverfarm1 and serverfarm2 are on the same VLAN, you have to configure "client NAT" for the server-to-server connections, to force the return traffic back to the CSM.

  • After applying middle tier patch 9593176, form POXPOVPO will not load...

We applied middle tier patch 9593176 to help resolves some of the myriad of forms glitches we are seeing after our upgrade from 11i to 12.1.3.
    1.     Applied patch 9593176.
    2.     Regenerated all form files (regenerate/recompile…same thing)
    3.     Started application using seeded start script ($INST_TOP/apps/edev_ppcm04/admin/scripts/adstrtal.sh)
    4.     Received warning while running the startup script (log sent to you earlier) which referenced note 397174.1
    5.     Stopped all processes using seeded stop script
    6.     Followed instructions on not 397174.1
    7.     Restarted using seeded start script
    8.     Did not receive any errors.
    9.     POXPOVPO freezes now.
    Versions:
    IBM AIX 64 bit 6.1
    Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.3.0 - 64bit
Forms Applet version is : 10.1.2.3
    EBS 12.1.3
Anyone else see this or have any ideas?

    Richard,
I have just applied patch to upgrade from Portal 3.0.9 to 3.0.9.8.1 (Patch applied to loginserver and portal schema) and the External Applications that were previously set up have gone from the portlet.
Does this relate to your note at the bottom:
"Minor issues with Bulk action. 1840420 CUSTOM WRITTEN EXTERNAL AUTH MODULE NEED TO BE UPDATED AFTER 3.0.9 UPGRADE SSOXOID.PKB DOESN'T LOAD.
External authentication modules that were written before 3.0.9 need to be updated after upgrading to 3.0.9. ssoauthx.pks is updated in 3.0.9 and contains additional routines that need to be implemented." ??
If I go to the "Login Server Administration" portlet and select the link "Administer External Applications" I get a list of 5 External Applications that have previously been set up.
If I go back to the Home Page and select "customize" on the "External Applications" portlet I get the message "Your Login Server administrator has not registered any external applications".
Does that mean I should just run 'ssoauthx.pks' & 'ssoxoid.pkb' or do I need to do something else ??
    Thanks

  • Starting over and load XDK in the middle tier

Okay, I have seen how it works and very much appreciate its capabilities
even though I have only worked on the sample codes. My problem is
I had different versions of XDK components loaded (xmlparsers, oraclexsql
xslprocessors, etc) because the INSTRUCTIONS does not specify that
one should do a dropjava first before loading the new versions in.
<HINT! HINT!> It is stranged that I have used dropjava to unload
bunch of XDK related(at least from what i can remember) jar files
and rebooted the server, started but yet I can still serve XSQL files.
So it seems dropjava didnt work unloading this stuff.
How do I clean up and start from scratch again? What is the proper
steps to unload these XDK jar files? Furthermore, this time
I only want to load XDK in the middle tier and not on the database
itself, is this possible? I have the OC4J loaded on another machine
so I will use that to query the oracle database, basically having two
machines. Is there a documentation that explains these step by
step so I dont have to gather bits and pieces from different docs?
I even wanted to start further back to rmjvm.sql and the reload the
    java jvm over again.
    Thanks in advance.

Is it possible to take the credentials in the middle
tier and query sys.user$ whether this plaintext
    username/password matches the username/hashed
password? You cannot use the sys.user$ table to query user information, you don't have the algorithms used to hash the password, so it is not possible, if you want to authenticate users at the middle tier using the actual database user, then you must consider using Single Sign On and use the Enterprise User, this way oracle doesn't locally authenticate users, but it does by means of the user stored at the OID.
If you use a J2EE based application you should consider using JAAS to perform authentication, if you are using Oracle Application Server, the JAAS module is already prepared (but not enabled) to be integraded with the Oracle Identity Management mechanism. I suggest you to enable the JAAS module, even if you have to authenticate users by means of the local /etc/passwd like file, then once you have learnt to configure SSO and Oracle IM, migrate the configuration to use OID.

  • How to Configure Multiple Portal Middle Tiers with a Load Balancing Router

    Hi,
Portal version trying to install 10.1.2 on Windows 2003 boxes.
I am following the guide http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_19/portal.1012/b14037/cg_advnc.htm#i1046354. I have InfraStructure installed on a different box and am trying to install 2 Portal Midtiers each on separate boxes and using LBR. The above document is kind of confusing as I am trying to following
5.3.1 Step 1: Install a Single Portal and Wireless Middle Tier (M1)
5.3.2 Step 2: Configure OracleAS Portal on M1 to Be Accessed Through the LBR (AND FOLLOW ARE THE STEPS 1 to 14 in sequence)
if I follow 1 to 14 steps in sequence the information is not consistent what is being listed in the following sections
    5.4.1 Create Virtual Hosts
    5.4.2 Configure OracleAS Web Cache
5.4.3 Register OracleAS Portal with OracleAS Single Sign-On
    i.e.
ptlconfig -dad portal -sso -host www.abc.com -port 7779
ptlconfig -dad portal -sso -host www.xyz.com -port 7779
as in the above steps it says to run
    ptlconfig -dad portal -wc -site
and ssoreg command that always fails because I am running it from midtier as it gives error saying invalid username/password
as oppoesed to steps listed in point 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12.
Can someone please privide the steps in sequence I need to follow when installing 2 midtiers with frontend LBR and one infrastructure. I am trying to follow the architecture listed in the above link.
    Any help is really appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Will appreciate any inputs on the following.
I am planning to install Infrastructure and one Midtier BI Forms Reports Discoverer, Portal on one windows box and the second midtier BI Forms Discoverer, Portal on the second windows box.
Please correct me if I am wrong on installing and configuring the mid-tiers as following are the steps I have compiled going through the document and want to make sure this time I do it right.
As I'll be installing BI Forms Reports Discoverer, Portal so wondering when I install the second midtier do I need to unselect all Portal, Forms, Reports, Discoverer or just the Portal I need to unselect.
Also in the host file of both the windows boxes do I just need to keep the LBR IP Address entry and remove the rest.
    LBR:_
    Computer Name: bigip5.prd.com
    IP Address: *167.123.2.5*
    Listen Port: *80*
    Invaidation Port: *9401*
    Infrastructure:_
    Computer Name: portal1.prd.com
    IP Address: *167.123.2.6*
Oracle HTTP Server Listening Port: *7777*
    Application Server Control port: *1800*
M1 (Portal & BI Forms Reports Discoverer):_
    Computer Name: portal1.prd.com
    IP Address: *167.123.2.6*
Oracle HTTP Server Listening Port: *7778*
OracleAS Web Cache Listening Port: *80*
OracleAS Web Cache Invalidation Port: *9401*
OracleAS Web Cache Administration Port: *9400*
    Web Cache Statistics port: *9402*
    Application Server Control port: *1810*
M2 (Portal & BI Forms Reports Discoverer):_
    Computer Name: portal2.prd.com
    IP Address: *167.123.2.7*
Oracle HTTP Server Listening Port: *7778*
OracleAS Web Cache Listening Port: *80*
OracleAS Web Cache Invalidation Port: *9401*
OracleAS Web Cache Administration Port: *9400*
    Web Cache Statistics port: *9402*
    Application Server Control port: *1810*
First to create MetadataRepository and then Install Infrastructure and then follow the below steps to install Midtiers
Install and Configure of M1 (Portal and BI Forms Reports Discoverer):-_
*5.3.1 Step 1*: Install a Single Portal and BI Forms Reports Discoverer (M1 i.e. portal1.prd.com)
*5.3.2 Step 2*: Configure OracleAS Portal and BI Forms Reports Discoverer on M1 to Be Accessed Through the LBR
    *1.* Configure LBR
*2.* Follow Section 5.4.1.1 to create the Virtual Host for bigip5.prd.com (LBR) and portal1.prd.com (M1)
*3.* Define a site that matches the virtual host entry for bigip5.prd.com (LBR) on Webcache of M1
*4.* Use OracleAS Web Cache Manager on M1, to map the site bigip5.prd.com (LBR) to middle tier portal1.prd.com (M1).
Follow steps 5 and 6 as per the document
*7.* Configure bigip5.prd.com (LBR) to accept invalidation requests from the OracleAS Metadata Repository on a separate port i.e. 9401
    *8.* Change iasconfig.xml on M1
    *9.* run ptlconfig -encrypt
*10.* Register the URL changes with OracleAS Portal by running ptlconfig -dad portal -wc -site
*11.* No need as it is http only
    *12.* Run the follwoing
    MID_TIER_ORACLE_HOME_M1\sso\bin\ssoreg.bat
    -site_name bigip5.prd.com
    -mod_osso_url http://bigip5.prd.com:80
    -config_mod_osso TRUE
    -oracle_home_path MID_TIER_ORACLE_HOME_M1
    -config_file MID_TIER_ORACLE_HOME_M1\Apache\Apache\conf\osso\osso.conf
    -admin_info cn=orcladmin
    -virtualhost
*13.* Edit targets.xml to enable monitoring of the LBR's front-end host and port settings for OracleAS Portal
    +<Property NAME="PortalListeningHostPort" VALUE=http://bigip5.prd.com:80/>+ and then run
    MID_TIER_ORACLE_HOME_M1\bin\emctl reload
    *14.* Test the setup
Install and Configure of M2 (Portal and BI Forms Reports Discoverer):-_
*5.3.4 Step 4*: Install a Single Portal and BI Forms Reports Discoverer (M2 i.e. portal2.prd.com)
*1.* As I am installing on wiondows so will not set IASCONFIG_LOC environment variable as I can just copy the iasconfig.xml file from M1 to M2
    *2.* Run OUI on M2
*3.* Clear the selection for OracleAS Portal but don't know if I need to unselect Forms , Reports, Discoverer also.
    *4.* Enable OracleAS Portal
*5.3.5 Step 5:* Configure the New Middle Tier (M2) to Run Your Existing Portal
*1.* Create both virtual hosts as done on M1
    *2.* Copy dads.conf, oradav.conf, cache.conf, web.xml from M1 to M2
*3.* Re-register mod_osso on M2. To do this, perform the following steps by copying osso.conf from M1 to M2
*4.* Synchronize the DCM by using the following command
    MID_TIER_ORACLE_HOME_M2/Apache/Apache/bin/ssotransfer MID_TIER_ORACLE_HOME_M2/Apache/Apache/conf/osso/osso.conf
    *5.* Run dcmctl updateConfig
*6.* add the necessary mod_rewrite and mod_oc4j directives to the httpd.conf and mod_oc4j.conf files respectively
*7.* Restart Oracle HTTP Server on M2
*8.* Access the OracleAS Web Cache Manager on M1 and follow steps 9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16 for Webcache seetings and clustering.
Also will appreciate if can get some info on the following:
    *1.*
When I configure the Webcache as per the Document but if I bring down one Midtier Instance the requests are not going to the other Instance that is up and ignores the case whether an instance is down. Any idea how what and where do I need to provide any setting which in case of instance is down routes the requests to the one that is up.
    *2.*
What exactly happens when it says To enable monitoring of the LBR's front-end host and port settings for OracleAS Portal edit target.xml. Is this for LBR to find if an Instance is down or not and route the requests appropriately.
Thanks again for all the help.

  • Load Balancing & Fault tolerance in Oracle Apps

    Hello
I am pretty new to Oracle Apps and Oracle 9iAS
We are trying to asked to find out the ways of deplying load balancing and fault tolerance in Oracle Apps
I have gone thru the following articles of metalink and some more from google
Configuring Web Cache as a Load Balancer for Application Servers
Create new middle tier node in existing Apps 11i environment using cloning and then load balance
Integrating and using Web Cache with Forms 9i for Load Balancing
Running Multiple OC4J Instances From a Single Install of 9iAS 1.0.2.2
LOAD BALANCING ORACLE APPLICATIONS ON UNIX
    Load Balancing in 11i
    OC4J Clustering Setup
OC4J Load Balancing for Forms 9i
Setting up 11i E-Business suite using a hardware load balancer
Sharing an APPL_TOP in Oracle Applications 11i
In Oracle Apps Concepts pdf, found that
Load balancing occurs when there are multiple installations of web server, forms server, reports server, concurrent manager server etc
Lets consider forms server component of middle tier
Can there be multiple INSTANCES of forms server within SINGLE INSTALLATION ???
If it has to be MULTIPLE INSTALLATIONS, then it will require multiple physical machines
What is software load balancing then ???
    Also read that
Oracle 9i AS instance is combition of Oracle HTTP Server (OHS) and one or more instances of Oracle9iAS Container for J2EE (OC4J)
Thus software load balancing can be implemented for Web server component of middle tier using multiple instances of OC4J ???
Forms metrix server configuration is hardware load balancing ??
What about Oracle9iAS Web Cache clustering ??
Please clarify the doubts and suggest me the way
    Thanks a lot

    dear all can any one help me on the following;
We want to install Oracle Apps 11.5.9 on 4 IBM AIX 5L boxes, the first node
will hold the database , concurrent and Admin Tiers. as for the other 3 nodes
it will hold the Forms/Web Tiers and we need to use forms metrics for load
balancing taking into consideration that we can't use Shared APPL_TOP. we tried
to find the way how to install and configure this solution but all the
documents are talking aboout the concept only and this concept is applicable.
We need the exact steps on how do the installation either using rapidwiz or any
    thing else

  • Load Balancing for Oracle Release 11i

    Hi there,
I am trying to find some recommendations on the need for load balancing in the middle tier for a 3 tier Oracle Release 11i implementation. Here are the questions that I have.
    1. Is load balancing very common for a 11i implementation ?
    2. What are the probable issues that one might encounter if there is no load balancing ?
    3. If there is load balancing how many servers are generally used for the same ?
    4. Do we only install Forms server on multiple servers or we install WebDB and Apache on all the servers ?
    5. Is it true that Web servers are the most likely to be down and thus mandating the use of load balancing ? If that is true, would it be prudent to install Web Server and Form Server on each server m/c and in the process having redundant servers ?
    Let me know your thoughts.
    Thanks,
    - Raj

I'm in the middle of doing this right now. There is a doc on metalink (233428.1) that details the process. I would highly recommend trying this in dev/test env first. Even though the instructions are very straight forward and not very complicated, I'm still having configuration issues.

Thanks in Advance.Create a service for each group, entering that service name in the connect string, and providing those users with the appropriate tnsnames.ora or application.
You middle-tier could handle this using the correct jdbc connection based on some info retrieved from the database. I will leave it up to you to take the suggestions and figure out how to develop the scenario you described.
Isn't It is also about time you upgraded to something that is still supported? 11g will make some of these issues a whole lot easier. You CAN use 11g Cluster/ASM with your 10g database until you can get your db upgraded. I have upgraded a boat-load of 10g databases to 11g - always < 2hrs start to finish. In many cases converting from single-instance to RAC in the same upgrade session. YMMV.

  • How does load-balancing with WebCache work - is there still a bottleneck?

    Hello,
We're migrating an old Forms 6i app to 10.1.2.0.2 (apps servers = Redhat Linux), and are starting to consider using WebCache to loadbalance between two application servers.
My question is this - say we have apps servers A and B, both running Forms and Reports Services. We use Webcache on server A (don't have the luxury of a third apps server...) to load balance between A and B. So all initial requests come into A, which in some cases may then be diverted to start a new Forms session on B.
For those users whose middle-tier sessions are now running on B - will all network traffic for their Forms session continue to be routed through Webcache on A, then to B, over the course of the session? Or does Webcache somehow shunt the whole connection to be straight between the client PC and server B, for the duration of that Forms session?
If the former, does that mean that the server hosting Webcache can still be a significant bottleneck for network traffic? Have people found load-balancing with Webcache to be useful..?
    Thanks in advance,
    James

  • Load Balancing Forms and Reports with Web Cache

We are planning to add a second OracleAS 10g middle-tier application server to an existing 10g middle-tier.
Both middle tiers will provide Forms and Reports.
Users must pass through two static HTML pages before starting Forms.
We plan to use Web Cache to load-balance (probably using round-robin) between the two middle-tiers.
Does anyone see any problems with this solution?
    All comments/suggestions welcome.
    Thanks,
    Jim

You could also load balance the two OC4J's using standard servlet mechanisms. I know that there exists a couple of good notes on Metalink. Go and do a search.

  • Load Balancing Portal that uses JPDK portlets

We are having the following Portal architecture :
    -Browser
    -Firewall
    -Load Balancers
    -Multiple 9iAS middle-tiers (2)
    -DB Server
We are using Web Providers registered with Portal which calls JPDK portlets.
We have registered the Web Provider url's, but of course had to
enter a URL to point to the location of the provider.xml. If we enter the URL specifying a particular 9iAS middle-tier hostname, all requests for the provider from any of the middle-tiers are routed through the one 9iAS server, which places a heavy load on this server.
Requirement : We want to specify the location of the provider.xml as local to the particular 9iAS server and so call the portlet from the same server, which will spread the load.
What would be the best way to achieve this ?

    Hi,
You can very well provide the URL of 'Load balancer' while registering the WebProvider, provided it meets the following condition :
Condition : For example, your middle-tiers are named 'machineA' & 'machineB'. Your loadbalancer's name being 'loadbalancer'. Say, a user wants to access a file by name 'test.html' which exists in both machineA & machineB and is identical. Let http://machineA/test.html & http://machineB/test.html be the URLS for accessing it.
The user should get the output after specifying the loadbalancer's name in the place of the 'serverA' or serverB.
    Something like, http://loadbalancer/test.html
If the condition is satisified, you can register the webprovider with Loadbalancer's URL.

  • Any reference site using CISCO or Big -IP for load balancing

we are considering switch based load balancing solution for middle tier. Are there any pointers , reference sites ?
I am aware of sites using Metrics Server for forms server load balancing. We are not planning to use MS.

    Hi Naveen,
You need to do following steps (Try first in Test env ;)
    1. Login in to Oracle Applications Manager Portal
    2. Navigate to AutoConfig section (Site Map->AutoConfig)
    Configuration Wizards
    Click on "Launch Wizards"
    3. Fill in fields as instructed.
(Basically you need to put Vhostname + Apache Port number)
    4. Run autoconfig
If you haven't got those wizards:
    1. Install Latest OAM patches (It is good idea to be on the latest patches of technology stack of Apps).
    2. Or if you can’t, you can to try edit Context XML file for each server manually:
    2.a
    s_webentryhost <Vhost>
    t_session_persistent true
    t_dns false
    s_webentrydomain <your domain>
    s_webentryurlprotocol http
    s_active_webport 8005
-- If you haven’t got mentioned parameters in the XML context file you need to apply latest template autoconfig patches
    2.b
    run autoconfig
    Hope it helps,
    Yury
