Middle Tier Migration Questions

Sawwan,
I Applied Customer specific patch without any issues as per metalink note: 2382761.1,
Now my questions:
1) 2382761.1 section 10 Review the technology stack patch level, its refering note 146468.1
Additional Notes
1 Oracle Developer 6i Patchset
Rapid Install Wizard will install Developer 6i patch set 15. Any previous updates to Developer 6i in your environment will not be preserved, and the latest Developer 6i Patchset and any individual emergency patches that you may have installed previously must be reapplied to your [NEW_8.0_ORACLE_HOME] in Section 6 Step 3 of this document
What patches do i need to apply in new server,
Do i need to follow Section 4: Postinstallation Tasks or section 6 in note 146468.1
2) Is there any way to find what are technology stack patchs we applied in source.?
3) How to handle with customizations, after migration.
Thanks

Sawwan,
I applied dev patches, after when i am trying to run adadmin i am getting following error

appltech@oraapp09:/u08/tech/appl> adadmin

  • Question about shutting down the middle tier while leaving the DB up

    Hi,
We just successfully upgraded 11.5.10.2 from running on 9.2.0.8 SOLARIS SPARC 32-bit to 11.2.0.1 SOLARIS SPARC 64-bit.
I am in the process of rewriting the backup scripts. We used to do a once-a-week backup (zip) of the middle tier directories,
after shutting down EVERYTHING cold (MT first, then DB listener, the DB). Our DB consultant likes hot-only backups of the
DB so we are going to keep the DB running all the time and always do hot backups from the DB, but keep MT cold backup.
We want to keep our MT cold backup so we retain our downtime window that users expect (Saturday night - Sun morning).
So my question is ---- is there any issue with shutting down the entire MT- only (adstpall.sh) -- but leaving the DB up?
When I do a adstrtal (via my script) the next morning--- everything should just start fine with no DB bonce having been done, right?
In the past, once I have the MT down, wait 5 min, kill any stray FND processes, I usually go on to bounce the database
"for good measure". I am 99% sure that I don't have to do this... and that there is no harm in "not" doing this, just need
    some confirmation.
    MH
One more piece of information - Our concurrent managers shut down cleanly almost all of the time without putting jobs on hold.
We don't have many users (< 60) and while we do have autoinvoice that runs every 5 min, I haven't had to do a big bounce
with cmclean.sql very often-- only about once or twice a year when users lock each others tables and the cleanest fix is to bounce
    everything --very rarely.

  • Forms 6i to 10g Migration Questions

    Hi,
My company is thinking about migrating Forms 6i to 10g. I wonder if you can share some of your experience with us (and with thousands of others who will also face the same daunting task)
    1. How do you like/dislike Forms 10g after the migration?
    2. What are the pitfalls of Forms 10g? What are the strengths?
    3. Other than Oracle Migration tools, is there any other tools that can help us?
    4. How long is the migration process typically taken?
    5. What problems have been encountered in the upgrade process?
    Thank you very much!
    Sincerely,
    John Sun

May I answer your question with some questions of my own? :)
    1. Are you migrating from Forms6i client-server or web?
    2. If Web, to a non-Windows middle tier (hopefully)?
    3. Do you plan to incorporate OID/SSO and/or Portal in the new environment?
I just reached the end of a 6-month long prototyping project to migrate our Forms/Reports 6i application (80% client-server, 20% web) to 10g, using SSO and Portal for report destination. We migrated about a dozen forms of varying complexity and rewrote our main application/menu form. We originally thought the prototype would take 3-4 months. The purpose was to learn what we needed to develop the best migration approach and have an idea of what it would cost. The application has about 650 forms/reports modules. Costs and the learning curve prohibited a move to J2EE/ADF; oh I wished... Management is hoping we can complete the full migration in about a year, but I think... well, this is a public forum and I am using my real name. ;)
We've only been using 10g release 2 since the end of January. Stay away from release 1 at all costs. Even release 2 is not what I would call entirely stable. I just opened a SR on MetaLink a few days ago for a problem I was able to recreate where the use of a button on a form-level toolbar that directly or indirectly call_forms a new form, and then navigation occurs back to the original form (say, when trying to minimize or rearrange widows) causes the session to crash with the infamous ORA-92101. We rely heavily on a hierarchical tree for our application menu, and keyboard navigation on the tree is somewhat broken (tree triggers not firing).
However, many long-standing 6i bugs have been fixed, and I really, REALLY do appreciate being at PL/SQL version 10 in Forms.
But we have some real challenges too, some self-inflicted. Some 400 of our application forms were converted from SQL*Forms 3.0 via Kumaran a while back. This is admittedly our greatest challenge. The V3 forms, being they were character-based with no mouse support, had lots of code in Key-navigation triggers that was never meant to be in navigation triggers (validation, etc) and would get bypassed if the user skipped the field using a mouse. Kumaran solved this problem using mouse triggers which are no longer supported on the web. We also are attempting to introduce some enhancements during the migration like become Section 508 compliant.
I did not opt to use the migration tool; it doesn't really do that much for you anyway.
One headache for us was Reports. We eliminated many temporary tables (permanent tables created temporarily) in user schemas for the use of global temporary tables. Granted, this feature showed up in Oracle9i. But in 10g, we found inadvertently that database sessions for reports are initiated by a java process and reused for performance, meaning different reports sometimes (and unpredictably) are sharing database sessions instead of getting their own. It would've been nice to know this beforehand because it was a challenge to find out the hard way.
My biggest complaint is that Forms still lags behind in features that are part of the application server. For example, I would've loved to implement Enterprise Users and rid our database of the many thousands of user accounts. But Forms doesn't support it. And Oracle really should have provided a migration tool to create the OID resource that links the OID user account via SSO to the database account. Especially since Forms only works with database accounts. All we got was a 9i-based White Paper on the APIs to write our own. This is Oracle data, not application data for heavens sake!
I've opened easily over a hundred SRs during this time, and am quite sure that my name is mud by now and that I have lost any chance of ever getting hired by Oracle. ;)
If your DBAs are database-centric and not used to administering a middle tier-- or administer an old middle-tier like 9iAS 1.0.2.2.2, get them into instructor-led training on 10g administration BEFORE they have to install the 10g infrastructure and middle tiers. The architecture is radically changed and infinitely more complex. As far as the workload the developers will face; Forms is still pretty much Forms, but the state of your existing code will play into it.
I was so tired of spending years on older versions of Oracle software. And I am proud to announce that I am now intimately familiar with what is known as The Bleeding Edge.

  • Installing a Forms & Report middle Tier (10.1.2) on a 10.1.3 farm

I have to install a new farm based on the 10.1.3 release. I will install the Infrastracture and one middle tier in two different Oracle Homes. The problem is that I need also Forms & Report Services, and we know that there will be no F&R services until release 11. The question is:
can I install a 10.1.2 middle tier instance on top of a 10.1.3 infrastructure (with a different Oracle Homve, of course)?
    Thanks in advance
    Rino

AS 10.1.3 doesn't have any infrastructure (as well as not having Web Cache etc). The latest full release is 10.1.2.0.2, which includes infrastructure and Forms/Reports. For Identity Management, I'd recommend the new 10.1.4.
As indicated above, the latest Forms/Reports release is 10.1.2.0.2 (patched to 10.1.2.2), which is the one you should use. You can install either the full Application Server 10.1.2.0.2 with Forms/Reports, or use the Forms&Reports Only release.

  • Changing the port number in 10g Discoverer- Middle Tier & Infrasctructural

Earlier I had insalled 10g discoverer which incudes both Middle Tier & Infrastructural Tier with default port numbers.
Now i would like to change the default port numbers to other port numbers. This is because , i am got to do another discoverer installation with default port numers.
In this case i have one question. Is it required to change all the port numbers that exist in the file "portlist.ini" of both Middle Tier & Infrastructural Tier.
What change still i need to do in Oracle 11i application front.
    Thanks
    Naveen

I did troubleshooting to verify the group, but this just changed the port number back to the default in the listener.ora & tnsnames.ora.
So I did all the steps again to change the port number from the default to another - via lsnrctl status, i see that the new port number is being used, I can also log in to the database via Toad using the new port number, in v$parameter i see that the local_listener is registered on the new port number....only under the Fail Safe manager, the port number (under listener parameter) has not changed....it still shows the default port number. Anyone know how to change this???

  • Need to Move contents of BLOB from database to middle-tier file system

I need to be able to move the contents of a BLOB (which is a PDF file) from the database to a specified location in the middle-tier file system (running 9iAS). There does not seem to be the equivalent package or other built-in functionality to DBMS_LOB (for moving INTO the database, which is amazing. Does anyone have a java bean or (?) which can accomplish this simingly simple task??

The java bean should work to extract from the database to a binary file on either Unix or Windows. As long as the file is in .bmp format in the database, you can save the file as .bmp on you file system and everything should be alright.
Or, perhaps, am I not understanding your question?
    Good Luck

  • Oracle WorkFlow Server (Middle Tier Components)

    To OWB Gurus,
I'm trying to install Oracle WorkFlow Server to create Process Flows and Schedule for the ETL mappings that I have. When tryin to install WorkFlow Server, it specifies to install Middle-Tier Components. My question is for creating the WorkFlow Process and Scheduling do I need to have the Middle-Tier Components installed? Can I create the flows without the middle tier components ?
    -AW

You can deploy and run processflows without OWF middle-tier,
but this component (Workflow monitor) is very helpful for monitoring and control of processflow

  • How to install/upgrade Ultrasearch for AS Middle Tier 10.1.2.0.2?  DB 9208.

    Hi,
I am trying to understand the Ultrasearch from the point of view of my 10.1.2.0.2 middle tier. Here is my environment:
Our Metadata Repository and Portal Repository (Customer) databases are version 9.2.0.8. Recently patched to 9.2.0.8 from 9.2.0.7.
Our Infrastructure & Middle Tiers have been recently upgraded to version 10.1.2.0.2 from version 9.0.4.1.
Both the repository databases and the Infra and Mid tiers have their own Oracle Homes.
From what I read, Ultrasearch is installed by default with an Oracle Database. It is also available with Oracle Application Server.
With the version of Ultrasearch coming with our 10.1.2.0.2 AS being a later version than the one that came with the Database, I am trying to figure out how to install the correct Ultrasearch in our Customer (or Metadata ?) database.
The iasua.log from our middle tier upgrade says:
    ============================================================================
2009/07/16 12:27:20.478 PDT NOTIFICATION:1 Framework: Starting to examine UltraSearch.
2009/07/16 12:27:20.478 PDT NOTIFICATION:1 Framework: Finished examining UltraSearch with status: Success.

2009/07/19 19:12:25.579 PDT NOTIFICATION:1 Framework: Finished upgrading UltraSearch with status: Success.
    ============================================================================
But during the Metadata Repository Upgrade using MRUA, I saw the following error:
    ============================================================================
    Calling upgrade plugin for ULTRASEARCH
    Error: Component upgrade failed ULTRASEARCH
    ============================================================================
I can connect to the Ultrasearch Admin tool from the Application Server Console middle tier => portal page, and I see there that the version is 10.1.0.4.2. Ultrasearch has never been setup previously with our 904 environment. I see the WK_TEST default instance there that I can navigate around. My question is, how do I check and confirm that Ultrasearch has been installed correctly for my Application Server?
If I have to install a new version of Ultrasearch, what are the installation steps? Does Ultrasearch always use the Metadata repository database? Or can it be configured to use a customer database? I don't see a WKSYS schema in our Portal database. WKSYS exists only in our MR database.
As per the APP_REGISTRY in our MR database, the Ultrasearch component is version 9.2.0.8.0 and is INVALID.
I believe that Ultrasearch was an option prior to 10.1.2+ releases, but is required with the recent releases. Correct me if I am wrong.
I think Ultrasearch is installed for our AS environment. I don't know if it is valid.
Any help would be appreciated. I just need to confirm that I am good to go, to proceed and upgrade our Portal to version 10.1.4.
    Thanks.
    CV

Figured out that Ultrasearch was installed as a part of the Middle Tier install and was upgraded successfully during the Middle Tier upgrade.
    Thanks.

  • Soa11g  - missing middle tier ?

    hello ...
first sorry my chaotic question, but im total beginer.
I've got installed working SOA11g environment . everything was started from admin console and works fine (developers confirm). But after computer restart is something wrong. all aplications are down. Server Error 404--Not Found . SOA is started as usualy by link Start AdminServer for weblogic domain from windows start menu and then starting servers BAM and SOA from adminConsole.
In AdminConsole - domain - servers is running AdminServer, Bam-server1, Soa_server1 all in running state.
in EM11g http://server:7001/em everythign except adminserver is unavailable. Status of BAM and SOA is down (red arrow). I can start, stop server from EM and in server summary screen state Running and Health OK. everything else is unavailable.
all deployed applications are down and their status is unvailable.
comparing with another server with same SOA11g installation there is another server in list - servername_server. I think it weblogic middle tier. This instance is not present on problem server.
I cant find what hapens and how to solve my problem.
Can you please give my some hints for this ?
    Thanks for any hint.

try to restart your admin server, it looks like you have deployed your applications to admin server, this will resolve the issue. If the admin is not coming up check on the .DAT files in the domain_home/servers/AdminSevers/data/default & diagnostic folders and remove them and restart it. Check if there are any other admin process ( zombie ) running and kill them and restart the admin.

  • Middle Tier Solaris OS version

We are encountering a strong push to migrate to Solaris 10 for our product line. Your Middle Tier installation instructions stipulate Solaris 8 or 9. Can we use Solaris 10? Are there any issues related to the use of Solaris 10? When will you certify against Solaris 10?

We are not ceritified on this, mostly with 10.1.2 Phase2 you may get this cerified as base AppServer needs to certify.
ps: i don't think there will be any major issues with this.

  • How to remove a middle tier from the infrastructure layer?

    Here's my scenario.
I have my infrastructure on System1.
I have three middle-tier installs in my farm/cluster on SystemA, SystemB, SystemC.
My question is "What are the correct steps to take to permanently remove one of these middle tiers, let's say SystemB, from my infrastructure?"
I want to make sure it's removed from OID, SSO, EM, and any miscellaneous config files. I haven't found anything in the docs to address this.
    Thanks,
    Bill

  • Communication between middle tier and infrastructure

    Hi!
We have seven OAS machines with two infrastructure-instances and seven middle tier - instances which use these infrastructure.
My short and simple question is: how does the communication between the middle tier and the infrastructure work? is there any file on the middle tier where you can see which middle tier is assigned to which infrastructure? there is no entry in the tnsnames.ora and i can't see any hint in the opmn.xml ...
    Regards

If you just want to see which midtier is bound to which infrastructure you can check $ORACLE_HOME/config/ias.properties . This doesn't explain how communication works though.
The process is roughly sad like this:
Every midtier has a dcm-daemon. This daemon contancts the infrastructure upon start, stop & restart automagically. Next to this the daemon also contacts the infrastructure if you make changes using the enterprise manager website. If you make changes manually, you have to for the daemon to contact the infrastructure by issuing dcmctl configupdate (of updateconfig, this I mess up all the time ;) )
The infrastructure stores certain parts of the configuration in the metadata repository, other parts are replicated to other components in the farm (e.g. if you created clusters).
Communication is made by issueing secure ldap statements on port 636.
This is just the basics. For more insights you either have to start reading manuals / metalink or contact an expert ;)

  • Middle Tier Tools?

    Hello all,
I'm still going through the tutorials, but some questions keep nagging me like this one.
In Delphi, I am using a very good middleware system called kbmMW which I like very much. It allows remoting/resolving of datasets, etc with support for compressioin and encryption of the packets going over the wire.
What are the equivelants in Java to this and would you provide links for more reading (for when I get bored with "If..Then...Else")?? It looks like J2EE is the enterprise stuff...
    Thank you,
    Lee

You specifically asked about "middle tier". I was
presuming that you understood what that meant and also
about the complexities of mixing middle tier software
with other software. If you don't then you should
google for it.I have written 3 middle tier applications in Delphi so I am familiar with the concept and principles of ntier development (although I consider myself far from an expert)
Are there any 3rd party java products that offer
reasonable prices on doing Ntier apps? That question is way too broad.
What is "reasonable"? If you want to buy weblogic for
use around the house you probably are not going to
find it very reasonable. If you are creating the next
eBay, then the cost might be very reasonable.
And what sort of n-tier are you doing? I have done
n-tier apps using nothing but the java sdk. On the
other hand I have done n-tier apps where a number of
3rd party libraries/applications were used (with the
    total cost over $100k.)
    Or is there
facility in Java itself for doing this? Again doing what?OK, I see where you are going. Maybe there are just too many choices for doing ntier development in Java and I should have been more specific. My apologies.
Basically, I want to be able to manipulate SQL databases from clients over the web using a business logic middle tier. For instance, running a report in the middle tier and sending it back to the client via pdf format. Or, updating the a centralized database with inventory levels from a remote store. Or, issuing "Alerts" to interested parties when something happens at a remote store such as the Labor % getting to high, inventory levels falling below acceptable levels and having the server issue emails to those interested parties using information contained in the centralized database.
Last night, I went to books-a-million and purchased Java 2 Unleashed and am reading up on RMI and Enterprise Java Beans. There is a wealth of information in this book that makes me wish I'd have looked at Java a while back.
    Thanks again,
    Lee

  • How Middle Tier connect to Database Tier?

Desktop tier never directly interact with Database tier. It is the Application tier which is also called Middle tier that connect to Database tier to fullfill the end user request.
My question is how Application tier interact with Database tier under the hood?
I know Middle tier consist of Forms Server, Report Server, Concurrent Server, Web Server, Administration Server.
Let's say I want to know how Concurrent Server connects to Database tier? which file or connection does it use?
Similery how does Forms Server, Reports Server, Web Server interact?
Any overall/broad picture of this whole structure?
    Thanks,

Refer to [Oracle Applications R12 Concepts|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B40089_09/current/acrobat/120oacg.pdf] and [Oracle Applications 11i Concepts |http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25516_14/current/acrobat/11iconcepts.pdf] manuals, it is explained properly there.

  • Control without client or middle tier server

Is it possible to remote control/view workstations without having the
client OR a middle tier server set up? We only want to be able to control
our workstations from inside our firewall, so the middle tier server
    would not be needed.
Another question, is it also possible to run naldesk the same way to push
applications out to workstations without the client installed (with or
without the middle tier server). Thanks in advance.

Desktop4 can use any of the options.
It really is a bit cumbersome to use at the moment, but drop me a note at
my email address of craig_d_wilson at yahoo dot com in about 2 weeks.
I'm in the process of writing a small front-end program for use in
clientless environments. I should have something going by then.
Normally the Workstation Object gives rights to the local SYSTEM account
when the Novell Client is around to access NetWare shares.
In a Windows Domain Environment, you can use the Windows Domain workstation
object to do the same thing.
Otherwise you may have issues accessing system resources when process are
    running in System mode.
FYI, you will 100% need a middle-tier server to get your App Objects.
It will not be needed to RC or transfer files, but you will need at least
    one mid-tier server.
