Migrate SQL 2005 from windows 2005 server to Windows 2008 R2 server

Hi all,
I need to move our SQL 2005 on a windows 2003 server to a new server with Windows 2008 R2 installed.  Could someone show me what are the necessary steps I need to do?
Thank you.

Hey TR,
As per Microsoft recommendation, Before Installing new server try to run Upgrade Advisor and follow these steps
1. Take Full backups of all System and Application databases on your 2005 machine.
2. Script all logins  --
3. Script all jobs
4. List out all Maintenance plans and their schedules -- You cant migrate so you have to create them manually
5. List out all Linked server(s) currently being used.
6. Check the service pack
7. Check the Edition
8. document the existing server settings so that it should match the same (collation,version,...)
Migration process
1. Migrate logins
2. Restore all App databases
3. Fix the orphan users
4. create the jobs
5. create maintenance plans
6. create Linked Servers
7. perform checkdb on all databases
8. rebuild indexes
9. update the statistics
10.move all the DTS / SSIS packages
11. Point the application to new server
12. Testing ....  Change all the application connection string to new server and then start the testing then finally if everything looks good then you can down the sql 2000 server and start using new server.

I don't think you can do it without a shutdown. This also depends on the types of services, roles etc hosted on the server.

  • Migration of Reports from SSRS 2005 to SSRS 2012

    Hi,
I have 50 Reports in SSRS 2005 currently in production server. My Client want to migrate to SSRS 2012.
I migrated one RDL using BIDS. I am using list items inside Text Box in those Reports. The Problem is design and style of the Report changed in SSRS 2012.
    Borders are not coming correctly.
I want the same Report in 2012 also.
    Please suggest what to do?
    Appreciate your help.
    Regards,
    Bala

    Hi Bala,
Gernerally, when you upgrade a Reporting Services installation to a SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services (SSRS) installation, existing reports and snapshots that have been published to a report server are compiled and automatically upgraded to the new schema
the first time they are processed. If a report cannot be automatically upgraded, the report is processed using the backward-compatibility mode. The report definition remains in the original schema.
Reports are not upgraded when you upload a report definition file directly to the report server or SharePoint site. Upgrading a report definition in SQL Server Data Tools is the only way to upgrade the .rdl file.
As you have mentioned that you got the layout problem when you add the report to BIDS, the issue can be caused the upgration have some limitation.
In your scenario, i recommend you to upload the rdl file to the SSRS2012 server directly to see if the layout will change, but upload direcly will not upgrate this report.

  • Migrating SQL data from iSCSI LUNs on one NetApp to another

    Hi....
I have a clustered pair of SQL 2012 servers which are using the Microsoft iSCSI initiator service to attach to some LUNs on a NetApp storage system.  I am trying to migrate the data on these LUNs to a different NetApp system and am not 100% sure how
I should do this.  I have dedicated LUNs for:
    Database data
    Logs
    TempDB data
    TempDB logs
    Quorum
    Backup
Each LUN is mapped to a drive.
Does anyone know the best way to go about this?  I was going to detach all clients from the database, stop cluster services on the standby node, copy the data from active node to the standby node on the new LUNs with the same drive mappings, then stop
all services on the active node, followed by turning on services on the standby making it the active.
I have a feeling this isn't going to work as I expect so I figure I would ask the question.

  • Migrating Oracle Apps from 11.5.5 on Windows 2000 to 11.5.8 on Windows 2003

Currently we are running Oracle Applications 11.5.5 on Windows 2000 Server. We want to migrate to faster machines running Windows 2003 Server.
11.5.5 is not supported on Windows 2003. We will need to upgrate to at least 11.5.8.
Can you please suggest what is the best way to do this:
    1- Upgrade 11.5.5 to 11.5.8 on Windows 2000
2- Install 11.5.8 on Windows 2003 Server. (Where would I get 11.5.8 from? Does Oracle ship older versions? I have CDs for 11.5.5 only).
    3- Export/import the database
    4- Move the customazitions over
1- Install 11.5.5 on Windows 2003 Server. (11.5.5 is not supported on Windows 2003. Can we temporarily install it still; and upgrade it soon to 11.5.8?)
    2- Uprade 11.5.5 to 11.5.8 on Windows 2003 Server.
    3- Export/import the database
    4- Move the customazitions over
    Thanks in advance.
    Earliest attention is appreciated.

  • Permission and ownership in Server 2003 and 2008 file server

I have an issue but I am not sure if these are the designs of the file server permissions. I have one user who has the modify rights to modify/read and create folders in a share folder. In the share folder, she had created a subfolder; so she should
be the owner of the subfolder and her security permission is modify. By right, modify does not have the rights to assign the permission to other users but as owner, she does. Does this mean that the folder owner supersede the security? And is this possible
to avoid this? eg. folder owner but does not have the rights to assign permissions to other user to access. Thanks a lot.

    Hi Thim,
    >>Does this mean that the folder owner supersede the security?
If the user is the Owner of the folder, he or she should have Full Control permissions to the folder,
which means the user can do anything to the folder.
    >>And is this possible to avoid this? eg. folder owner but does not have the rights to assign permissions to other user to access.
As far as I know, unless we deprive the user of the ownership, we can't achieve this.

  • How to migrate the data from DEC RDB 5.1 to Oracle 11g

    Hi,
As part of my project, we need to migrate the data from DEC RDB 5.1 present on Alpha server with VMS 6.1 OS into Oracle 11g. The size of the data in DEC RDB is around 40 GB.
Could you please suggest various ways of getting this done in easy and simpler way?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
when Oracle bought Rdb from Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in 1994, the name of the product changed from DEC Rdb to Oracle Rdb. Meanwhile the actual version of Rdb is 7.2, so you are on a VERY old version. And that excludes the suggestions from the mentioned note to use a database link from Oracle RDBMS to Rdb, that is simply not possible with that old version of Rdb.
But Rdb 5.1 knew already the Rdb Management Utility (RMU) - I just checked that with Rdb 4.1 which is even older.
There are two commands that are helpful for your task.
RMU/EXTRACT - that writes the metadata into a file. That output helps you to build a script to create all the objects in your target database.
RMU/UNLOAD - that writes the data of each table into a formatted file (one file per table). That output can be used by the SQL*Loader to load your data into the target database.
You can read all details about these commands in the online help on your Alpha. At first, issue the HELP command and look in the output list whether it lists a command RMU or RMU51. Then run that command:
    $ help rmu /extract
    and
    $ help rmu /unload
Replace rmu by rmu51 if the help command shows you that rmu51 exists but not rmu.
There is one caveat. Do you use blobs in your Rdb database? If you don't know that, create an the output with RMU/EXTRACT and search the output file for the string LIST OF BYTE VARYING. If there are none then you have no blobs. If you have some you need to take more care of them, they can't be unloaded into a formatted file, that must happen programmatical. If you have such fields then let me know, then I'll tell you how to get them out of your Rdb database.
    Best regards
    Wolfgang
P.S.: For Rdb related questions it is better to ask in our Communities at https://communities.oracle.com/portal/server.pt/community/rdb_product_family_on_openvms . That forum is watched by Rdb Support and Development.

  • Migrating SAP products from a non-SQL Server platform to a SQL Server 2005

    Hi,
    I have another question too.
Can someone pls provide me the Considerations for Migrating SAP products from a non-SQL Server platform to a SQL Server 2005 platform?
More specifically from Oracle to SQL 2005.
    Regards
    Abhi

    Hello
You need to perform an OSDB migration.
This will involve exporting your SAP system into a DB neutral format and then reloading this into an SQL 2005 SAP system.
    Please review http://service.sap.com/osdbmigration
I recommend you review the homo/heterogeneous system copy guide for your SAP release.

  • Migrating a table from SQL server 2005 to oracle 9i

    Hi
I need to migrate a table from SQL server to oracle, both of which are on different machines, I tried using SQL server DTS export functionality selected the Oracle driver, created a DSN, but it gave error message box as shown below
Error Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers
"ORA 12560 :TNS protocol adapter error"
Context:Error During initialization of the provider
While i was successfully able to migrate the table from SQL SERVER to MS-ACCESS and from MS ACCESS to Oracle
    thanks

    Hi
thanks warren, i just figured out that the DSN i had created while migrating data from Access to oracle was User DSN, i just created a system DSN of the similar kind and was successfully able to export the data from SQL server to oracle, the only problem being the column names in SQL server are longer than the limit of 30 characters we have in ORACLE..

  • Transferring 3 SQL databases from both SQL Express 2005 and Standard to a new physical server

I am trying to figure out the best method for transferring SQL 2005 databases from 2 different physical servers to a new server running windows server 2008 64bit.
I own a fully registered copy of Microsoft SQL 2005 32bit Standard Edition. However all of my SQL databases together are only 4GB in size thereby making 2008 SQL Express an option.
Here is the breakdown of the servers:
    1) (Old Server1) Windows 2003 Server 32bit - SQL Express 2005 32bit
    2) (Old Server2) Windows 2003 Server 32bit - SQL Server 2005 32bit Standard
    3) (New Server) Windows 2008 Server 64bit - (Not sure which version to install)
**The objective is to migrate 2 SQL databases from Old Server1 and 1 SQL database from Old Server 2 to the New Server. What version should I install on the new server??? Do I go with 2008 express or install the 2005 Standard Edition?
Pending your response to which version to install, what are the correct steps to migrate (which I have never done before) the databases from both of these servers to the new server?
I have researched this online and I think this particular situation is unique in that I am transferring from both SQL Express and Standard from 2 different physical servers to a 2008 server that is 64bit. I cannot find anything online that I feel confident
in trying. Please help me, as I have this migration deadline of this weekend. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    Hello,
You may choose between using backup/restore or using detach/attach methods to migrate the databases.
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187858(v=sql.90).aspx
You can transfer logins using the following article.
    http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/918992
To decide if you migrate to Express Edition or to another edition, please review the features supported by each edition. For instance, Express Edition does not support jobs (SQL Server Agent is not available).
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc645993(v=sql.100).aspx
    Hope this helps.

  • Migrate SQL 2005 to 2008r2 to diferent server running 2008r2

I need to migrate sql server 2005 to a diferent server running windows server 2008r2 and install SQL 2008r2 can some one help with that step by step please
UPDATE:: i just realize its sql 2014 not 2008, does it make it easier or more difficult or same or there is any tool that make it easier?
thanks for all your response and help.

    This is what I follow.
First Run upgrade advisor 2008 r2 against sql 2005 to confim there are no issues,.
Check depreceated features , discontinued functionality, breaking changes etc in sql 2008 r2.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143729(v=sql.105).aspx
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144262(v=sql.105).aspx
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143179(v=sql.105).aspx
Once this is done, depending upon the criticality of databases I do a performance test on the new server. If doing performance tests then I do all these below steps before hand and do a database refresh during cutover.
So basically take backup of all databases and move it to the new server.
Now need to move the logins using this KB article - <cite class="_Rm">support.microsoft.com/kb/918992 </cite>
    Move all jobs/linked servers etc
Setup all the configuration in sp_configure.
Update stats of all the databases + Reindexing of all indexes.

  • Migration issue in SQL Developer (from SQL Server to Oracle)

    Dear All,
I am using SQL Developer 3.0 to migrate data from SQL Server 2008 to Oracle 11gR2. I used Quick Migration Wizard for migrating and everything was Ok but when it was running migration process, I got this message: “Migration actions have failed. Check the migration reports for details. : null”
But there was not any report to check. Does anyone know how I can do it without any problem?
    Thanks in advance.

I am working on a project to migrate from SQL Server 2008 to Oracle 11gR2. It includes some tables, views, indexes, triggers and store procedures. At first I worked on SQL Developer 2.1.1.64 but it doesn’t support SQL Server 2008 (I had to use SQL Server 2005 in its offline options). I got a lot of error when I used the offline options. I know that I may be having some problem in table or view definition in my SQL Server but if I don’t have any log file I can’t solve them.
Unfortunately, in SQL Developer 3.0 there isn’t any option to generate a SQL comments from objects (convert to Oracle) because I need to rewrite comments if they have problem. For example I have a filed named USER that it’s a reserved word in Oracle so I have to change this field name.
I also can’t use “Translation Scratch Editor” because it has some error to convert. For example when I use it for the following code:
    CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Table1](
         [ID1] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
         [Name1] [varchar](50) NULL,
         CONSTRAINT [PK_Table1] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
         [ID1] ASC
    )WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY]
    ) ON [PRIMARY]
    CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Table2](
         [ID2] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
    [Name1] [varchar](50) NULL,
         CONSTRAINT [PK_Table2] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
         [ID2] ASC
    )WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY]
    ) ON [PRIMARY]
I receive a wrong code like this:
    CREATE SEQUENCE Table1_ID1
    START WITH 1
    INCREMENT BY 1;
    CREATE TABLE Table1
    ID1 NUMBER(10,0) NOT NULL,
    Name1 VARCHAR2(50) ,

    CREATE SEQUENCE Table1_ID1
