Migrate SSHD to SSD+HDD

Hello,
yesterday I got a zbook 15 with an SSHD configuration (separate HDD and SSD working together). I would like to change to a new SSD as boot device and the old HDD as storage.
I was wondring what settings in the BIOS I need to change. Can somebody please help with that?

Using migration assistant from HDD only to SSD+HDD?

Usually, when buying a new mac and starting it for the first time, I use the migration assistant to get everything (software, settings, data...) from my time capsule backup.
I am currently using an iMac 24'' which only has a "standard" HDD. I am however thinking about upgrading to the latest iMacs, potentially with the "SSD+HDD" option.
The description on the "Configure" page of the online store says : "If you configure your iMac with both the solid-state drive and a Serial ATA hard drive, it will come preformatted with Mac OS X and all your applications on the solid-state drive. Then you can use the hard drive for videos, photos, and other files."
My question is therefore the following : would the migration assistant be "smart enough" to place my OS and applications on the SSD drive, and the rest of my files ("videos, photos, and other files.") on the HDD?

I had the same issue some time ago: I added a 32 gb SSD to my mac running leopard. Then wanted to use install Snow Leopard and use migration assistant to restore the sytem with Snow leopard and applications on the SSD, and the user folders on the old 250gb HD. Turns out this isn't possible. Manually accessing your time machine or other backup up to restore files by hand is a pain. Just installing Snow Leopard and pointing the user folder to the Leopard user folder on the HD creates problems too, just as pointing it to a newly created folder.
Solution:
-Backup your old system with time machine to an external disk
-Note: make sure you don't mix up SSD and HD in this manual.
-Install SSD (If this means you no longer have a cd drive, use a copy of snow leopard on an external drive).
-BE SURE YOUR OLD SYSTEM IS BACKED UP WITH TIME MACHINE.
-Then install OS X TWICE: once on the old HD and once the SSD. Wipe your HD with Disk Utility before install.
-Start up OS X on the HD, use the option key at startup if necessery to select the right disk.
-Use migration assistant to restore from the time machine backup. Now you have a fresh install of OS X, with your user files and applications intact.
-Now startup OS X on the SSD.
-Make the SSD startup disk in system preferences -> Startup disk.
-Go to System preferences -> Users. Unlock. Create an extra user, so you end up with a spare user account, and one you will actually use. Now right click on the user account thats going to be used, and select your user folder on the HD that you just restored with Migration assistant. Just leave the spare one. It is for emergencies and also disk failures: OS X is designed to have user and system files on the same disk, so you should always have one user account sticking those rules.
-Restart OS X on the SSD as asked.
-Now all thats left to do is migrate applications from the HD application folder to the SSD application folder by simply copy/pasting. This is trial and error, but in my case 90% of the applications gave no trouble at all. The ones that did are library based media applications like Aperture. All I needed to do is go to their preferences and point them to their old libraries on the HD. MS Office was the only application that needed full reinstalling. The applications that ship with the OS don't need to be migrated of course since they are already there on the SSD.
-Point your dock icons to the right folders (on the HD) and applications (on the SSD)
-Make a new time machine backup
-Last step, optional: clean up the HD. You don't need the system folder that is still there, but I chose to keep it for a while as a backup. I left the library in place there too, since I don't know which applications still use it, but in time I will clean it up too.
And one more thing: Since Migration assistant doesnt' just copy files, but also seams to adapt application databases of Apple apps to work with a newer version of an application coming with a new OS, such as Mail, Safari, iCal and Address Book, this is probably going to be the best way to upgrade an SSD+HD setup to Lion too. (Lion has better SSD support). Provided of course that Apple doesn't update Migration assistant, which is what should actually be done. Upgrading this way took me 2,5 hours, most of which was spent waiting ofcourse.

Going from HDD to SSD+HDD

I have a 2010 First Gen i7 desktop iMac computer and am looking rather fondly at SSD drives to run alongside my 1TB Internal HDD. Boot and Apps on SSD, everything else on Internal, the usual set-up.
I know I can change the location of my home folder via System Prefs > Users & Groups > Ctrl+Click User > Advanced Options
What would be the best way to deal with the migration from HDD to SSD+HDD?
Do I do a fresh install onto the SSD and then point to the home folder left over on the HDD and delete the old system files around it?
Does restoring from Time Machine via the Lion install process give me the option of choosing a different disk to send my personal files to? (this would be proffered).
Do I wipe everything clean, restore the OS from time machine, then use Time Machine from the temperary user account to restore my personal files to the HDD?
I do have two external HDDs (time machine and "junk" drive) - do I use the terminal to copy my files to the junk drive (preserving structure and timestamps using the -pR flag), then copy them back onto the HDD once everything is wiped and continue from there?
The last options seems like the most realistic, but the second would be the most proffered (if possible).
What is the best way to do this? Anyone done it before? Anything I should be careful of?

A clone of a HDD will have loads of empty blocks, all those blocks would be written to the SSD...
Incorrect. Most backup programs don't do a block-for-block copy (though some have such an option on very restricted conditions). They copy the files (like cp -rp). So blank space on the source won't be the same blank space on the destination.
But serious question for a moment, do these Carbon Copy Clone drive 3rd party softwares have some kind of special function? Some people have crazy devotion to them and its peaked my interest as to why.
If you want to go through the "exercise" of creating lauchagents or cron tasks for constructing and easily changing scheduling backups, more power to you. I for one just want to schedule the stuff, possibly change the schedule if need be, and move on to more important things like doing the work that actually needs to be backed up! If you don't believe in scheduling periodic backups, well, that's another story.
Though, to be honest, I still question its usefulness when Disk utility does the same thing; select a hard disk ( "TOSHIBA MK2561GSYN Media" on my MacBook Pro), click "new image" and then click go. Then use restore in Disk Ulitity to restore the disk from the image - carbon copy goodness!
So do most other people that do backups, i.e., creating a .dmg (what you get from DU's New Image) is not the way to do backups. DU's Restore, maybe, but I've never used DU for backups.

My computer was working perfectly with Win7 for about 2years until I formatted on monday to clean a little bit my drives ... Since then I'm unable to install windows again. I have the 0x80070570 error.
The complete error message is:
Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure that all files required for installation are available and restart the installation. Error code:0x80070570.
What is the 0x80070570 error when installing Win7 or Win8 or Win 8.1 on a clean SSD/HDD ?! These versions are full from MSDN.
What I did already:
check my RAM (16go gskill)
remove unnecessary hard drives
replace my "old" SSD with a clean new one
remove my sound cards
remove the mouse and use only keyboard
reset the BIOS
check every LED on the motherboard (asus sabertooth z77) and there is no problem

Hi,
If all images cannot be installed, we have a reason to suspect the hardware cause.
If you use two memory slots to get 16G RAM, I suggest you test with just one (8G) to check the result.

Will "fusion drive" on mountain lion manage the user-upgraded SSD-HDD como ?

I just finished to see the amasing apple keynote and I found the M-lion supported "drive fusion" technology really interesting.
I recently (feb/2012) updated my mid2010-MBP13" with and SSD drive, boosting is speed and now I'm wondering if drive fusion will be capable of using my SSD-HDD combo?
Whato do you think about it ? In terms of speed and smartness this is sound very powerfull to me!

I understand, I undestand, but we, both, know that hardware is not linked by magic, and all the interesting stuff fusion drive is supposed to do, is software related stuff (understanding how many times u use an app etc etc).
I was just wondering to find, one day, thath option on "utility disk" :-), "Want to fuse your drives?" YES.

SSD HDD from R61e doesn't work in T61p

I've removed the HDD from my R61e and put it into my T61p, the computer doesn't recognise it at all. Tried another SSD HDD from another laptop of mine and same deal. Any ideas why the T61p doesn't seem to be able to run SSD HDD?The one from the R61e is a OCZ Technology Core Series v2 SATAII 2.5" Sold State Drive and the other is a Silicone Power SSD 2.5" SATA Solid State Disk 64GB.

What is the machine type and model for your T61p?
Did your T61p orginally come with just a traditional HDD or did it come with a SSD??
If your T61p came with a regular HDD, just placing the SSD drive in it will not work.. You need the storage container for the SSD
Take a look at the link below and you'll see the part number for the Storage container (12) and the part number for the SSD (13).Both parts are needed for the SSD. See types below:

SSD, HDD and Dual Booting

I'm new to the whole SSD thing and wanted to know what I should partition my install of Linux along with Windows and what I should/could move to the HDD to reduce some wear and tear on the SSD. It would be nice to also hear what others may have done.

If new the the SSD thing means that you have an SSD that isn't from four of five years ago, you have nothing to worry about. All that crap that still floats around the internet about needing to reduce writes to your SSD are true, but only if you use one of the first generation SSDs (like when they wre new the the market). With wear leveling that actually works and improved garbage collection, today's SSDs should last a long time. I have seen reports of people trying to wear drives out by just writing them to death, and the controller goes out before the flash gets worn out. So at this point, all that stuff is probably just FUD.
Partitioning is a very personal thing. No one else can tell you what the "best" layout would be (except me... just use a single btrfs and subvolumes!). But in terns of a combined SSD/HDD situation, you should remember that although you want to store you media on the bigger rotational, putting your entire /home on the HDD is probably not the best idea. There are all kinds of configuration files and whatnot in your $HOME that can seriously beneift from the super fast read speeds and low latency of a SSD.

yes it will be faster, but you need to look for 1.8 inch SSD, they are pretty rare now and not cheap.
Look for something like Intel X-18m.
Also you could remove the optical drive and put in a 2.5 inch SSD into that caddy if you want. This maybe a cheaper, and you won't get any speed penalty, as the main hdd and the optical drive bay uses SATAII connection.

W530 SSD/HDD Configuration

Hey Everyone,
I'm buying a W530 in the next few days and have become confused about the SSD/HDD setup that I want. I've tried to research a lot about it but the articles I find seem to be mixed and I just want a clear explanation.
Here's what I'm planning on buying:
Intel Core i7-3820QM Processor
Windows 8 Pro 64
NVIDIA Quadro K2000M Graphics with 2GB DDR3 Memory
8 GB DDR3 - 1600MHz (2 DIMM) -- (which I'll upgrade on my own to 32GB)
Internal RAID - Not Enabled
500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
No Micro Solid State Drive (mSata)
What I want to do is:
- Buy a SSD separate
- Replace the main HDD with the new SSD
- Move the 500GB HDD with a drive bay adapter
I'll use the SSD for the OS and large applications, and the HDD for storage.
Does anyone see any complications with this?
Do I need to be concerned with the RAID option?
Anything I'm missing?

I have already purchased the Samsung 830 256GB SSD and plan to replace the HDD with it. Also, already purchased an adapter for the optical drive for my HDD to go in. No questions regarding that.
My questions deal with installing Windows 8 Pro 64 onto the SSD. Most of the articles I have read talk about Windows 7, so I'm not sure if there is a difference.
Questions:
- Do I do a clean install or create a factory backup with the one installed on my HDD?
- Where do I get a clean install for Windows 8?
- If I do a backup, do I put the backup on disks or usb drive? I've read some forums that say Windows 8 can't be put on disks?
- Any step-by-step guides for Windows 8 that people have seen?

Need help with workflow: New iMac with SSD & HDD and Pegasus Promise

Hello everyone! I've decided to upgrade my iMac and ordered an i7 with the SSD and HDD drive configuration as well as the Pegasus Promise 12TB drive. I've been researching as to what's the best way to manage both the SSD and HDD drives and I really haven't seen an end-all answer. Now with the purchase of the Pegasus Promise, I'm more confused as to what's the best approach to take. Here are my thoughts:
1. Use the SSD as the boot and application drive and the HDD for the users folder.
2. Use the SSD as the boot and application drive, the HDD for the users folder, and photos and pics onto the Pegasus.
3. Use the SSD as the boot and application drive, the Pegasus for the users folder, and the HDD for ???
4. Just use the Pegasus drive as the boot drive and use it for everything. (being that it's a RAID drive, then all my files are backed-up already)
Majority of my space-filling files are my iTunes folder, tons of pictures from using Aperture, and iMovie for videos.

I'm working on a similar premise. i7, SSD, HDD, Promise raid, etc.
I'm nowhere near as savvy as a lot of the people here, but after a lot of research I decided that focusing on how the Pegasus gets configured is the most important for me. My concerns are for a business in photography, btw.
I can't budget the 12TB unit so I'm trying to make the most of either the R4-8tb or th R6-6tb.
I'm planning to launch the applications from the SSD. I will use the Mac HDD for typical non-photographic files, iTunes (mine's not so big), and standard fair. This is all backed up via Time Machine to a 3TB Western Digital MyBook for the time being.
As for the Pegasus, I believe I've settled on: taking an R6-6tb unit, placing the 6th drive in my firesafe from the moment I get it. Configuring the remaining 5 drives in a level 5 setup. Leaves me 4TB to get started and buys me a few succesful quarters to plan on daisy chaining another unit when memory is needed. This way, I may not have maximum possible drive space, but I've got a replacement drive on the ready should I experience a drive-failure. Then, I'm not sitting on pins and needles while I await a replacement; they'll simply be shipping me a new "spare".
I still need to actually speak to someone @ Promise to make sure this will work, as I stated: I"m learning as I go here. If this is an acceptable Raid setup, you would have 8TB available to you.
Personally, I am far more comfortable running systems in series and building the size as I go (to a point) than putting so much data in a single array.
[Edit] The raid bay is mainly for the Lightroom catalog, and I use standard external drives to store redundant backups off-site (1TB at a time).

Upgdaring MacBook Pro to SSD ( HDD)

so I have MacBook Pro mid 2012 13" and I was thinking about upgrading my HDD to SSD. But I also came up with an idea of removing the CD-ROM (because I don't use it at all) and putting HDD instead of CD-ROM. So my macbook would have SSD and HDD at the same time. I could install OS X and all the other apps into SSD and keep my movies, music etc. on my HDD. I know this is possible, but I have one question: what are the cons of doing this? I mean maybe my battery won't last that long or something like that? Is there anything I should know before upgrading my macbook to SSD+HDD?

Arnsa. Upgrading the HDD is easy. I do upgrades for macbook pro after warranty. I do a brand. You can purchase mx100 mx200 from crucial. In my computer i purchase the SSD370 from transcend. Just do a clean install, using a USB boot. Do the format and install. Before doing all these, disconnect find my mac, sign off Imessege, face time. sign off itunes, book and app store. before installing the ssd. Since all of your password and safari links is on apple cloud services those can be get back.
Regarding replaicing the cd rom drive, get the OWC caddy. Here is the trick. Check if your MBP can work with 6gb/s on the bay. you can check it in About these mac, then System Report, go to SATTA/SATA Express, there you will find 2 devices. The first one is the main drive. the second is dvd drive data conector. If it said Negotiated Link Speed 6 Gigabit, you can add any mechanical drive or SDD. If it said 3 Gigabit, you have 2 options there, add a 3 Gigabit HDD. Be sure is native 3 Gigabit drive. On my instlaions, adding a 6 cause problems. I add drive that said backwards to 3 Gigabits, and still have problems. You can search those on Amazons.

Triple Boot w/ SSD/HDD Setup

I previously had a dual boot setup w/ windows 7. Recently, I upgraded my HD to a 500 gb WD caviar blue and moved it into an optibay along with putting in an intel 320 series SSD. I was wondering if it would be possible to triple boot with having my Mac OS install on the SSD and Ubuntu/Windows 7 on the HDD(therefore having 3 partitions on the HDD, one for my mac data(music,movies, etc.), one for windows, one for ubuntu) My SSD is 80 Gb and therefore would not be sufficient for accomadating all of the OSes so I would need to put it on the HDD. Another complication would be the fact that I am only able to use the external superdrive, but I have already made USB sticks of both OSes. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Well, I haven't tried this, but... the documentation says if you have more than one internal disk you have to disable one of them. I also don't know if Boot Camp Assistant will work on a disk that doesn't have Mac OS X on it at all, or if it just has an MBR. I know it gets ****** with three or more (visible) partitions, and will not even let you download/create the support driver USB stick, which is b.s.
However, if you can figure out a combination that Boot Camp Assistant will be agreeable, BCA 4 has the ability to somehow make it possible to run a Windows install image from a USB stick on certain Apple hardware. This is mentioned on page 4, in the middle paragraph, of the 10.7 Boot Camp Install Setup document PDF. But even if your hardware could support this, BCA may not let you do it for other reasons which of course it won't tell you why. It just won't let you. (Per usual Apple's error messages are not at all useful.)
Otherwise, I think you're going to have to remove the SSD, put the HDD back where it was, put the superdrive back inside the computer - do your installations - and then redo the surgery to get back to SSD + HDD.
Windows and Ubuntu install drivers based on the computer used for installation. With Ubuntu you might be able to get around this by rebuilding the initrd/initramfs after you get the drive back into your laptop, but I don't know if you can successfully get Windows to cooperate by moving the drive from one computer to another.
Basically you have a very custom situation and Apple doesn't tend to support custom anything. They provide tools for an extremely narrow type of support and if you deviate from that standard - well, you're on your own. So you have to blaze your own path.

[MSI P67A-GD53 (B3) P67] Frequent boot freezes with A3 code / SSD HDD problems

I experience frequent freezes on boot with black screen and A3 code. After turning off power and rebooting it usually boots OK but then very often Windows fail to load restarting itself just when logo starts to appear. After another boot Windows usually starts OK.
A couple of weeks ago however those problems led to situation where I experienced a total freezes of Windows when accessing certain files on SSD drive. I've read that low level SSD HDD erase might help with that so I've done that and reinstalled W7. A3 code freeze still happens from time to time and yesterday Windows froze again. I've turned the computer off and after restart MoBo didn't see the SSD drive at all. I've opened the case, checked the connections and restarted again. A3 freeze again. Another restart and this time SSD was detected and W7 loaded properly.
According to this doc (http://www.ami.com/support/doc/AMI_Aptio_4.x_Status_Codes_PUB.pdf) A3 means 'IDE Enable' so I guess there is a problem with one of the HDDs (SSD most likely). I've updated BIOS to the latest version (I guess that also clears the CMOS, right?) but the problem still persists.
What else can I do to fix that issue?
EDIT: Just wanted to mention that I haven't had any problems with that SSD drive on the old mobo (different CPU type/socket though)
