Migrating files

Apparently I have a bad file in my user profile. I am unable to use some of my Adobe software and they told me I have to create a new User profile. I created a new User account but how do I migrate my files from one user to another? Will I have to enter a password everytime I open a file if I do this? Thanks!

Do a Get Info on the old Documents Folder, unlock the lock & change ownership/privileges to the new Identity, click the Apply to enclosed Items box.
Once changed you can drag that folder to replace the new users Documents folder.

  • How to migrate File server to NAS device?

All right so here's the scenario.
An external forest level trust is setup between two forests A & B as recently as we acquired the company B.
Users from forest B were already migrated to domain A.
Now I need to migrate file server from domain B to my domain A but the target where we need to move file shares is a NAS device, so basically we cannot do a simple server migration from domain B to domain A.
We need to copy over the data+ACL+Share permissions from fileserver in domain B to a NAS device in domain A whereas of course ACL permissions on file server present in domain B will obviously be as per source domain user accounts, example ACL permissions
    currently will show as "B\user1".
So whats the best way to perform this in order to maintain the permissions & data.
Another question how do we copy share permissions from file server to NAS as I can robocopy the data with security permissions but how to copy over all the share permissions to destination NAS?

    Hi,
You need to retain the SID History attribute when users across domains to ensure users in the target domain can access to files during migration.
For more detailed information, please refer to the threads below:

In additional, you could backup registry key SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Shares to copy share permissions.

  • How do I migrate files from MacBook running OS 10.4.11 to new MacBook Pro running OS 10.6? Thanks.

How do I migrate files from my MacBook (specs below) to my still in the box MacBook Pro running OS 10.6?  Yesterday, I ran Software Update; it returned the message that all my software was up to date / no updates available.
I am particularly concerned with moving the 7000+ photos in iPhoto.  I have photos organized into folders and albums and want to preserve this structure.  I use this photo data as part of my lecture content.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Cannot migrate files from old MacBook to new MacBook Pro

I have been trying without success to migrate files from my old MacBook to my new one.  The Migration Assistant doesn't work.  The new Mac recognizes the old one but the old one cannot see the new one.  The old MacBook has OS 10.5.8 and the new MacBook Pro has 10.8.1.
Then I tried migrating from my Time Machine backup, with the external drive still connected to the old MacBook, but it kept telling me I didn't have enough space to copy anything, even when I unchecked everything except my Documents folder.
I went to the Apple Store and one of their "geniuses" told me I could connect the external hard drive directly to the new MacBook Pro and migrate the files from there.  That didn't work either; I got an error message about incompatible software.
The genius also told me that I could back up the new MacBook Pro to the same external hard drive with Time Machine that I'd been using and that I'd be able to restore from backups from either computer, but that's not true.  I cannot see any backups on the drive except from the new computer.  Time Machine does recognize that there is space in use on the drive but will not show me any of the content.
Does anyone know how I can migrate my files, short of copying them to a flash drive and doing it the old-fashioned way?  Thank you!

It is possible to merge accounts but it is not easy nor foolproof. The easier solutions:
    1. Remove the account made in Setup Assistant and change the username on the migrated account.
See Mac OS X- How to change user short name or home directory name.
See Macworld | Changing the short username in Leopard - use the last procedure, "The Full Monty."
    2. Log into the migrated, renamed account and delete the account made in Setup Assistant, then re-migrate your data.

  • Can I migrate files to Mac from PC using iCloud?

We have just got an iMac and I have been trying to migrate files etc. from our old PC using Migration Assistant, but to no avail. PC says Mac is trying to connect, Mac says it has found PC but that is as far as I can get! Has anyone any suggestion? I am not at all used to Mac, having had PCs for the last 18 years, but I use iPad and iPhone as does my husband, and so we wanted to treat ourselves, expecting we would be able to link up easily with these items. I'm sure it will be, if I ever manage to get our files transferred! Our son suggested it might be possible to use iCloud but I have seen nothing to suggest that - would it be possible?
    Please can anyone advise?

I don't think using iCloud would work because there is no storage there expect for Mac files. If you can't get Migration Assistant to work, you can copy the files to an external dive and then to the Mac,

Using Migrations Assistant will only move the data and other things over, it will not bring over a previous version of the Os since the 2014 model can run anything earlier than Yosemite.

  • Migrated files wont open or error msg

I used migration asst to migrate files from Imac power pcG3 (OS 10.3.9 and classic 9.2.2 installed) to my new imac G5 intel. I selected " move files and folders only" but everything migrated. When i try to open old files, some open, others give msg " this file is locked or in use. Would you like to open a copy?". These are appleworks WP files. when i try to move any migrated file to the trash, i get msg "finder requires you to type your password".
I installed office:mac 2004 on new computer. since migration, it hangs up, cant close documents, have to force quit.
    G5 intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Did you set the same username/password combo you used on the old iMac on the new iMac? If not, those belong to the old user, which should be available on the new machine, and not the new user, that's why you need to authenticate to trash them. Since you just got the new machine, you might consider restoring the new machine to the factory condition, using the same username/password combo on the old one, if you still have the old iMac, and using the Migration Assistant again.
As for the AW files, did you create them using the OS 9 version? Since the Intel-Macs can't run classic, you're probably out of luck opening them. If you still have the old iMac, you should open the AW files with the OS X version 6.2.8, convert them, and copy them over to the new machine. Then try to open them with the OS X version.

  • How to migrate files from different databases to sharepoint 2013?

    Hello everyone,
I need to migrate files of various formats from two databases to SharePoint 2013 ? How should I pursue? Please explain..
Scenario : Two different databases on different systems have loads of files. I need to migrate them to SharePoint?
    Any suggestions/ Answers

    Hi,
You need to copy the database into your network shared folder or SharePoint Server where you wanted to attach this content DB to your newly created web application.
    Hope and Afraid,
Same Domain has been used. I mean if you move the content db from the server 1 which using the AD1 for authenticate the users,
So your new server 2 and web application must have configured to authenticate the AD 1 users.Otherwise user not found exception will be thrown.
If not  still you can change the site collection administrator for the site which is migrated from the server 1.

A FW cable would be far faster & Easier, but with Ethernet you need a compatible version of Migration Assistant running on both Macs.

  • HT4796 where are the migrated files located on my mac? i can't find them!

I am migrating from my PC to new Macbook Pro using Windows Migration Assistant.  I can't locate my files on my Mac; not in photos or music or documents!  Please help!

Thank you!  I did not know where to find the migrated files either.  I had lots of user folders to look through but finally found the one with my Pc data in it.  Dragging it to the desktop enabled me to access my files and drag them into my Mac Folders.

If all you're trying to do is move the files from the Windows external to the Mac external, you can simply connect them both to the Mac and drag the files from the Windows drive to the Mac drive. If you want to move the files back and forth between them, you'll need to establish the format of the Windows external. Macs can read and write to FAT32 and exFAT (which can handle files larger than 4GB) formatted drives but can only read NTFS formatted drives without additional software. With the Windows drive connected, you can check its format with Disk Utility.

    Hi
I have a problem along similar lines. MBP 2007 new logic board fitted. Restored files from Time Machine. iPhoto messed up - still to fix but appears to be something to do with permissions. Now to your problem, and mine, with Excel. I originally found one file opening as Read Only. Checked all the permissions, etc, as you have done. Initially thought it was only one file as others opened OK. I have now found another one with the same problem. I found that by changing the name of the file in the Finder i.e. adding a "1" to the name, the files would open OK. In looking through the Microsoft site I found one similar problem and one suggestion was to copy (I just dragged them) the files to the Desktop and see if they would open. Answer, yes they do. The theory is that there is a sharing problem. I have checked these two files and enclosing folders. Nothing is locked and nothing is, or ever has been, shared. All the permissions appear to be correct and I am signed in as Administrator. That is as far as I have got at the moment. You might like to see if your file(s) will open from the Desktop - just double click them.
Not sure where to go next but at least I can now use the files.
    TY

  • Recently Migrated Files - Mail Accounts Grey out Randomly

I recently migrated files from an older Macbook running Tiger to a newer Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard. Now some of my email accounts grey out when I check email and the accounts that are grey are different each time! I can still retrieve email on the old computer so the problem is not my ISP or email provider. I have checked all the accounts and they appear to be the same as on the old computer. I did, however, re-enter all the info by hand just in case. I have run Connection Doctor and get different results every time even if I change nothing. Any clues?

Update: I tried taking all my accounts offline and retrieving mail from only one account at a time. This DID seem to work but it's unacceptable to have to retrieve email this way. I have 8 accounts. But maybe the additional info will help someone troubleshoot.
