Hi,
I am in the process of migrating informix9.4 to oracle 9i database.
Can you pl let me know how bytes in informix are migrated to oracle. are they any problems faced during migration of LOB data.Does the OMWB 10.1.0.2.0 release handles the data transfer for LOB properly.

As per the default settings 'byte' is migrated as 'blob'. You can change it.(raw,long raw).

How to resolve the encoding problem while migration from informix9.4

When I migrate the informix9.4 database, there occur a error while migrate the data from informix to oracle.
Because the source tables has a column which type is "vchar", the some row's data length more the 4000, so migration workbench convert this column type from "vchar" to "clob" automaticly. But when the worbench has created the oracle model, and then migrate the data, there occured this error:

The encode in the source informix database is "zh_CN.gbk", and the encode in the destination database is "zh_CN.gbk", why this prompt the convert error?
Another information is that excluding this table, other tables can migrated success.
So, I guess this problem must has association with the type conversation which from "vchar" to "clob", can anyone help me with this, Thanks.

well, the limit of 4000 is clear. From the Oracle® Migration Workbench Reference Guide for Informix Dynamic Server Migrations:
VARCHAR(m,r)
The Informix Dynamic Server VARCHAR data type stores varying length single-byte and multibyte character strings of letters, numbers. and symbols. The maximum size of this column is m, that can range from 1 to 255. The minimum reserved space is r. This is optional and defaults to 0 if not specified. The minimum reserved space can range from 0 to 255.
The comparable Oracle data type is VARCHAR2(n) that also stores variable-length character strings. An Oracle VARCHAR2(n), however, can have a maximum string length of between 1 and 4000 specified for n.
Specifying a minimum reserved space is useful if the data in a row is initially small but is expected to grow at a later date. If this is the case then, when migrating Informix Dynamic Server tables that contain VARCHAR columns consider increasing the PCTFREE value in the storage clause for these tables in the Oracle database. If this column is used in an index, then the PCTFREE values for the corresponding index storage should also be considered. For indexes based on VARCHAR columns, Informix Dynamic Server allocates the maximum storage.
So it is not surprising that the workbench is converting a VARCHAR with a length of more than 4000 to a CLOB.
But that does not explain the encoding exception. This might be a problem of the Informix JDBC driver.

Migration from Oracle8i (BLOB) to Oracle9i

Hi All,
I have stored some Word documents in Oracle 8i DB using OLE Container. I need to migrate my DB from 8i to 9i. Given that Oracle9i, doesn't support OLE container, I need to save current BLOB contents as Files in 9i DB. Would you please advise on steps should be taken or address any reference or tutorial?

oracle keywords that could be used in the existing database interactions would have to be changed,also the db connection strings. i guess that is all in the application.

Migration from SQLServer7.0 to oracle9i

We have an application running on javaapplets/servlets/sqlserver7.0 on iplanet webserver.
Now we are going for enterprise version and planning for oracle9i.
Will there be much change in javacode when we migrate to oracle? Are is there any others tips before we start ?

"Default " problem while migrating from mysql to oracle.

I'm migrating from mysql3.23 to oracle9i via the OMWB tool.While migrating i'm getting an error message "Failed to create default for the table <table>:ora00907 missing right parenthesis".This error is due to the difference in the syntax used for the keyword "default" in mysql and oracle.In mysql we have to give after the Not Null option whereas in oracle we have to give before Not Null.
The problem is i'm migrating via the OWMB tool.Is is possible to handle this error with the help of tool itself.

Unable to connect to database after migration from oracle 8 to 9i

Our applications database was migrated from oracle 8 to oracle9i, The oracle_home path was updated to the newer version.
While accessing the databese using the new setup we are facing SQLLIB mismatch problem
the description of error is as follows

Looks like some Tuxedo services are using Pro*C code. Therefore, you would need to recompile your Pro*C code using the newer compiler and then rebuild the Tuxedo servers.

1.Take cold backup from 9i database.
2.Install 10g software and create need directories and restore cold backup
3.Startup database with upgrade option

Does theJ2EE migration kit support migrating from Oracle9 iAS?

1) Does the J2EE migration kit support migrating from Oracle J2EE to SAP J2EE?
2) If the answer is NO and since the documentation doesn't mention Oracle, I am wondering if SAP is planning on including support for migrating from Oracle too?

what kind of projects are you trying to migrate to NWDS?
The Migration Kit (Plug-In) in its surrent version supports migration of projects from IBM, JBoss, BEA to SAP - on the same Java EE technology stack level! If you want to migrate SAP 6.40 (J2EE 1.3) projects to SAP CE (Java EE 5), there is a support in the SAP NWDS to do that. You can start importing your "old" projects by saying "migrate projects" in the import statement of the IDE.
Try it out!

I want to know whch version of Oracle migration kit shoul di use for migrating from Informix 7.2 to Oracle 9i. Also does the migration kit support CISAM files in Informix to be migrated to oracle. If not then how can the functionallity of the CISAM be brought into oracle. What are the options for migrating ACE reports from informix to Oracle.

The Oracle Migration Workbench works with informix 7.3, I am not sure if it will work with informix 7.2.

Out of memory error in migrating from mysql to oracle

Hi,
I'm trying migrate from mysql to oracle9i. The hardware and software requirements are matching or even much higher than mentioned in the documentation. I have installed OMWB is properly(hope so). When I try to migrate the desired database from mysql to oracle, the repository, the Oracle model are created successfully. But while migrating data, say for around 35000 rows insertion everything works pretty fine. But after sometime, the migration stops and no error or anything appears in the screen.And in the Errorlog I get "OutOfMemoryError".
I tried to migrate single table also. But I still get this problem after sometime. The tables may contain from 10 - 130000 rows...
I even tried to change the %JRE..% memory value to 64M or 128M in the omwb.bat file and the O/s is Microsoft Windows XP, RAM 256MB.
Any help is much appreciated.

did the message in the error.log provide any extra information? For example, was the OutOfMemory error prefixed with a string
like "cannot create new native thread" ? My suggestion to workaround the problem would have been to increase the JVM heap size to 128
but this appears to have been unsuccessful for you. Can you send a mail to the Migration Workbench support services
([email protected]) explaining the problem, and attach the full error.log file please ? (please also copy me on the mail).
In the meantime, you can workaround this by migrating the schema only (there is a switch on step 3 of the migration wizard asking:
"Do you want to migrate the table data to Oracle?" - just select the "No" option). When the schema has migrated, you can then use the
offline data loading facility to migrate the data. This uses data extraction scripts and SDQL*Loader to migrate the data to the target
Oracle database.You can learn more about the offline data loading facility from the plugins referenceguide (from the Help menu in
the Migration Workbench).

Migrating from 8.1.7 to 9.2 with different character set

Are there going to be issues when I try to migrate from 8.1.7 to 9.2 where the character set in the 8i database was the default western european to utf8 in 9i?
I ran the 8i scan utility to see if there would be issues importing into an 8i db with a different char set and it said that there would.

As your first step, I would recommend reading the white paper Character Set Migration Best Practices for Oracle9i on the Globalization Support Home page - http://otn.oracle.com/tech/globalization/index.html
Since you mentioned that CSSCAN has already reported there are potential issues (I guess you have exceptional/Lossy data ?), I would strongly recommend splitting up the UTF8 character set change and the database version upgrade into 2 distant phrases. Probably moving to UTF8 in 8.1.7 first, then upgrading to 9.2 later.
BTW, there is a separate Globlization Support and NLS discussion forum on OTN for further discussion on character set related issues.

All the creation scripts are ready for the 7.3.4, backups as well.
Should I apply those scripts directly and import my backup?
Specific things to change int the mydbinit.ora?

Application - 11.5.10.2, Database - 9.2.0.6.
Documents Followed

238276.1 - Migrating to Linux with Oracle Applications Release 11i
Till now i have finished as follows.
1) Doc -238276.1
Section 1 completed on the source instance.
2) Doc -230627.1
Section 1, Section 2, Section 3 completed.
3) Now i started 238276.1
Section 2.
Step 1- updated the manifest --- Completed
Step 2- copy appl_top and Common_top -- Completed
Step 3- Clone the AutoConfig XML context file on the Target System -- Completed.
Step 4- Install iAS Oracle Home -- Completed.
Step 5- Apply the Oracle interoperability patches for Red Hat Enterprise Linux -- Ignored
Note- Because My Application is 11.5.10.2.
Step 6- Run AutoConfig setup phase on the Target System -- Error out.

Migrate from forms 3.0 to forms 7.0

I want to know ho to go about for migrating from forms 3.0
to forms 7.0?
Also I want to know what does the object type
sqr,rpt,pc & ext stand for?

FIrst thing, there is no Forms 7 - the next release of Forms aftre 6i will be Oracle9i Forms.
Anyway to migrate a Form I would suggest looking at the OTN papers as we have a note on migrating Forms 3 -> Forms 6.

You will have to do this before you migrate to Oracle 9i Forms.

ORACLE DESIGNER 9i???Yes, you can migrate from Oracle Designer 6.0 to Oracle9i Designer. There is an extensive Migration Guide available on OTN that I recommend you read. The guide is under the Designer Collateral (http://otn.oracle.com/products/designer/Collateral.htm#Migration)
There are two guides, one for Migrating from 6.0 to 6i and the second from 6.0 to 9i. These are essentially the same as there is no significant difference between 6i and 9i Designer.
