Migration assistant, now I have 2 accounts, I only want one.

Hello, I am new here and would like some help.
I have a new Macbook pro with Lion 10.7.5. And I just got done transferring everything over from my old Macbook w/ 10.5.8
So now I have 2 admin accounts on my new Mac. But what I want is just one admin. account on my mac.
What do I do?
Do I delete the account set up on the new mac, and just log in with the transferred account. Or do I have to manually transfer everything using shared folder.?
And then delete the old account?
I am sure there has to be a simple way around this.
I am probably missing something really simple.
Please help.
-Thanks

do I have to manually transfer everything using shared folder.?
Yes
And then delete the old account?
Yes, when your sure and ready to do so.
I am sure there has to be a simple way around this.
There was SetUp Assistant you missed setting up the new Mac, it creates the first account on the machine.
If you had a Firewire cable connecting the two Macs and held T booted the old Mac into Firewire Target Disk mode, then Setup Assistant would have transferred that sole account to the machine.
You can still go this route, but will have to erase and install 10.7 from Apple's servers, so really it's the same amount of work either way.
I think using Users/Admin/Public > Dropbox folder is better, that shoudl change the permissions on the files to the new account.

  • I now have 2 user accounts, but only want one.

so i stupidly created an account on my new macbook pro when i first turned it on. the next day, i decided to use the Migration Assistant to drag over my files and software from my old laptop. the computer set up a new account based on how my old laptop was set up. they both have administrator capability, so i can delete either one depending on which one i'm logged into (in other words, whichever one i'm logged in as, that one becomes the main administrator and is listed in the system preferences Accounts window under "My Account" and the other one is listed under "Other Accounts." so i deleted the first unnecessary account, but saved the contents of it as a disk image. do i need anything in there before i permanently delete it? like the Library, or is the Library in the other account sufficient? does this make any sense?

sounds logical. i just looked through disk images and compared the libraries and they seem to be the pretty much the same, aside from the old stuff it brought over. some of the dates are newer on some duplicate stuff from the deleted account, like font collections. i wonder if those are really any different or not. but in terms of customization, i hardly did anything. i saved a text edit file with my complaint to apple about the computer coming with 10.4.11 loaded and a disk for 10.5
and now i see there's a 10.5.1 already. can't even get through on the phone...
    thanks,

  • Migration Assistant, now two user accounts

Hi, I've just purchased a Macbook Pro.  I've just completed the migration assistant and its transferred all my files, photos and itunes to my macbook but under a different user account to the one my computer was set up with.  Any ideas how I can merge the two (transfer the info over) and delete the second one?
    Many thanks, Louise

A = First user account created on the new machine (Admin)
B = User account migrated over (account status unknown)
1: Log into A and make sure B is a Admin user in System Preferences > Accounts
2: While in A, transfer files via the Users/Shared  folder
Programs usually are installed into the Applications folder for all accounts to use, but some have particular settings saved into each user account.
Best thing is to just use the program again and make new settings which get saved in User B.
Once you have everything up on A, then delete B from the System Preferences > Accounts.
    Optional: for more security,
it's best to create a new Admim user while logged into A, lets call it C, and then logging into C and changing A to Standard user from Admin, then using A all the time like normal.
It's a little more work involved using the computer when your accessing the Applicaitons folder (rarely), and having to manually check for updates, but your computer is much more secure as A is now a Standard User with little "powers" so in case something bad happens it can't do much to your computer (unless you give it your Admin password of course.)

  • Migration assistant now seeing my User file only back ups on my time machine, nor am I able to drag the entire user folder to my new desktop.

I cannot recover my system on a clean install when I try to either use migration assistant or drag and drop of my backed up user profile. I did not back up anything else. I can see the file on my external drive but migration assitant does not see it as a restore and when I drag and drop the file to my desktop, the system informs me I do not have permissions to transfer all of the files.
    What can I do?
Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,

Yes, there were no system files included. Soley the items that are incopassed within the user file.
Rats.  It's awful that Apple doesn't warn folks about that.
Since I am not able to use them as backups, what is the best way to restore all of my previous preferences, calenders, notes, adressbook, etc.?
Would it be best to replace each file in the library of the new machine with the coresponding folders of the new machine?
That's going to be difficult, but is about your only option (assuming you have no other backups).
Part of the hassle is, you have to do it "piecemeal" -- you can't just delete the old home folder, or any of the "default" sub-folders (Desktop, Documents, etc.), and drag in the one from your backups -- you'll get a message about it being a required folder, so you can't delete it.
So you'll have to do it with the contents of the sub-folders.
Make a large pot of coffee.
For future reference, many long-time users consider a good backup plan to start with a minimum of two full backups, via two different apps, on two different pieces of hardware.  These should be updated regularly.
For "primary" backups, Time Machine (built in to OSX) is quite good.  You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
#27 in the FAQ link has some suggestions for "secondary" backups.

  • HT1495 help i have two itunes accounts i only want one.

I had an iphone touch and I set it up with an itunes account. Later when I set up my iphone (and subsequently my ipad) I used another email address accidentally. Since then I had my main computer reformatted, and lost all of my itunes music (aside from recent purchases) and since my ipod has been irrepairably smashed. Although somehow my phone still has all of my music, the only music I have on my ipad is new items purchased on my iphone.
I have two itunes accounts and in the history I can see all of the purchases, but do not know how to drop them into my current itunes account (with the other apple id).
    Hoping for help...

You can't. Apple will not allow merging of iTunes accounts. You need to pick one (whichever has the most stuff) and just use that one.
Otherwise, you'll be constantly signing out of one account to sign back in with the other.

  • If I have two iTunes accounts, and only want one to update my apps why does the other account keep opening?

Here's the issue-I have two iTunes accounts, yet account #1 always comes up when I want to update my apps. This occurs even when account #2 is logged in and has been synced from desktop to iPad. Additionally,Account #2 is logged in on the iPad and yet account #1 prompt appears when updating. Interestingly account #2 functions normal for iTunes purchases but not apps purchases. Any suggestions?

Apps will ALWAYS be tied to the account from which they were purchased.  You will always have to update the apps from the account from which they were purchased.

  • HT204053 Two apple id accounts - i only want one! ???

how can i combine my two accounts?? I have [email protected] and another with a google emial - i want tocombine both the have the one calender etc???

    Welcome to the Apple community.
You cannot combine 2 accounts. What you can do however is export your calendars from one account to your desktop and then import them into the other. Once you have done this you can then stop using one of your accounts.

  • I am wondering about transferring my pc date to my new iMac.  I know there is a migration assistant, but I have multiple drives in my pc.  Will the migration assistant be able to handle this?

I know there is a migration assistant, but I have multiple drives in my pc.  Will the migration assistant be able to handle this?  I'm going to be trying to move the date to a new imac 27' with fusion drive.

the following set of instructions is a little longer, so you might want to print it out and have it handy
    Step 1 - PC
If your PC already is connected to the Internet, hold down the Windows button on
your keyboard and simultanously press R. Into the opening window enter "cmd" (without
the quotation marks). A command line will open, enter "ipconfig" (again without the
quotation marks) at the prompt. Now find the section labelled "Ethernet-Adaptor" and
note the values for IP-Address, Subnet-Mask and Default-Gateway on a sheet of paper
If your PC is not already connected to the internet, you need to manually configure its IP address.
    open Network and Sharing Center
do a right click on Ethernet and select Properties
in middle of the screen there is a box labelled "This connection uses the following items"
out of this box select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)"
click on the Properties button in the right corner
Into the window "Use the following IP address" enter the following values
    IP-Address: 192.168.0.1
    Subnet-Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default-Gateway is the IP-Address of your Router. This value is needed for internet connection, for the file sharing setup only this value can be left empty.
    Step 2 - Mac
If your Mac already is connected to the internet, it is likely that it has automatically receive the necessary parameters from your router and therefore should be in the same network as your PC. To be on the safe side, you can check this by
    open System Preferences
    select Network
choose Ethernet from the panel on the left side of the window
    click on Advanced
    click on TCP/IP
compare the values for IP-Address, Subnet-Mask and Default-Gateway with those you wrote down earlier.
If both PC and Mac have identical numbers in the first three parts of the IP-Address, you are set.
If your Mac is not already connected to the internet, you need to manually configure its IP-Address as well.
In the TCP/IP window you have just opened select "Manually" from the drop down menu "Configure IPv4:"
    Enter the following values
    IP-Address: 192.168.0.2
    Subnet-Mask: same as with PC
    Default-Gateway: same as with PC
Step 3 - Activate File Sharing on PC
    open Control Panel
    select Network and Internet
    select Network and Sharing Center
on the left panel select change advanced sharing settings
in the middle of the new page enable turn on file and printer sharing
Step 4 - Activate File Sharing on Mac
    open System Preferences
    select Sharing
set check mark next to File Sharing (green circle appears on the right side next to File Sharing:)
    click on Options:
set check mark next to Share files and folders using SMB
in the listbox under the text Windows File Sharing make sure there is a check mark next to your account name
Step 5 - Create a share on your PC
In Explorer select the folder you wish to share
do a right click on that folder and select "Share with"
    choose "Specific people"
a new window opens. there select your Windows username (usually the first in the list)
if you plan to copy from Windows to Mac only, it would be sufficient to grant Read permission only, but, since most likely you are the only person to access that share and certainly do not plan to sabotage yourself, Read & Write permission is ok too.
    finally click on "Share"
Step 6 - Create a share on your Mac
Once the check mark next to your account name is set (see above) your home directory is automatically set as a share.
Step 7 - Connect your PC to your Mac-Share
do a right click on the network icon which resides on your desktop or in the left
    panel of every Explorer window
    Select Connect Share
in the text box next to Folder: enter \\<ip-address-of-your-mac>\<your-osx-username>
if you are using the same username and password on both Windows and OSX click on "Finish",
if not set the check mark next to "Connect using different credentials" afterwards click on "Finish" A new window will open where you enter username and password that you are using with OSX
Step 8 - Connect your Mac to your PC-Share
hold down the command key and press K simultanously or in Finder click on Go in the menu at the top of your screen and select "Connect to Server"
in the Window that opens enter smb://<your-windows-username>:<your-windows-password>@<ip-address-of-your-PC/<y our-windows-username>
    or
smb://<ip-adress-of-your-PC/<your-windows-username> you will be asked to enter your Windows username and password in popup window
Now you have both computers connected to each other. Each will provide you access to your home directory of the other computer. Open a second Explorer or Finder window with your local home directory and start copying

  • Migration Assistant created 4 duplicate accounts

After using Migration Assistant to move my account from my Dual 800 G4 to my new MacBook Pro (both running 10.4.6), I noticed 3 additional copies of my account in the Accounts pane in System Preferences.
Only one shows up in the login window at startup. In the Accounts pane, they all show the same name and short name.
In NetInfo Manager, all 4 appear in the /users directory and all have identical information (name, home, realname, uid, generateduid, writerstimpassword, gid, writers_realname, picture)
While this isn't causing any problems so far, I think I need to get rid of those duplicates. Is NetInfo Manager the right place to do that? I'm worried that deleting one might delete them all...
    Thanks!
    15" MacBook Pro & PowerMac G4 Dual 800MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Deleting the duplicate entries in the NetInfo Manager should not delete them all; if you find that it does, you can reset or restore the NetInfo database, and recreate a new account with the original short name if needed. To back up the current NetInfo database manually, open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, and enter 'sudo periodic daily' without the quote marks. You will be asked to provide your administrator password, which won't appear in the window as it is being typed.

I am trying to reinstall Dreamweaver CS3 from the CD after having computer issues.  Now getting error "You can only install one Adobe product at a time.  Please complete the other installation before attempting to install ......."  There is no other Adobe product installing.  I have used the Adobe Cleaner Tool many times and uninstalled other Adobe Products but neither has worked.  I have uninstalled/reinstalled this CD version of Dreamweaver several times when changing computers and after having computer issues. A google search of the problem suggested it may be an error related to the number of times I can reinstall this product due to licensing issues.  Please help.

Absolutely not. You are misinterpreting things. The activation check never happens when just running the installer, only much later. It means what it says - there is another "install" pending/ active on your system, meaning somewhere there is an (invisible) process still blocking things. Either way, since you haven't provided any real technical info, we can't advise specifically. if you are on Windows, you may want to check your task manager and terminate any setup.exe and msiexec.exe processes plus potentially may need to manually fix/ delete some registry keys. For anything beyond that you will have to be much more specific.

The video I am watching this guy is just dragging every line to make curves.  And every anchor point is a corner.  He is not switching back and forth between the pen and the anchor points tool, and he is not using the convert points tool.  He draws a curved line and starts another straight line only to curve it with a click and a drag.  It is super efficient, and I could save a world of time if I could figure out what he is doing.

I pay monthly for membership and do not want to uninstall the Creative Cloud.
Please advise on how to uninstall these other apps.

Does anyone have problems with sent messages not showing in their Mail? I have two sent folders when really I only want one. Any tips?

    Not sure if this is a fix, but I tried sending myself a test email from only  the Bcc field, and lo and behold it now shows the Bcc field in all sent item previews;
...maybe leaving the 'To' field blank on purpose forced Mail to show it.
Rebooted the Mail program, still there - rebooted the machine, still there. Hope this is still relevant and it works for you too - J.

  • My ipod syncs with itunes but now I have an itouch and want to put some of the music on there as well.  How do you do that?

I have an ipod which was set up to sync with my PC.  Now I have an itouch and want to sync some of the music from my library with that device from the same computer.  Can I do that?  How do I do that?

Like LexSchellings said, simply plug it in, configure to sync however you like, and then actually sync away.  Basically, you can do the same thing you did with your first iPod.
There is no limit to the number of iPods, iPads, or iPhones you can sync with one iTunes library, computer, or account.
