Migration form Ibook G4 to IMAC Corel Duo

I'm executing the migration assistant, but once appears the firewire simbol on my Ibook, the migration assistant program keep showing the message " waiting for the disks appears".
Is it normal? How long time should I wait?

It should not take that long.
Ideally, you should have your iBook in Target Disk Mode and already connected before starting Migration Assistant. That may help.
I've also found Migration Assistant prone to lock-up every time I've used it. Never actually managed to get it to do anything on any of my systems. Just locks-up and hangs.
But, as a word of caution, you are far better-off to avoid using Migration Assistant to move from a PPC Mac to an Intel Mac.
There are a lot of plug-ins, drivers, and programs that get moved with Migration assistant that can cause trouble with your Intel system.
You are much better-off just moving your data files over using the FireWire Target Disk Mode (without Migration Assistant).
Then, just install whatever programs you need.
But, many, many people have reported strange system behaviors and slow-downs after using Migration assistant on their Intel Macs.
Your new system will be much more reliable and more stable if you just move your data files to the new machine and install your programs fresh on it.
While installing your programs, be sure to check for updated versions that are Universal Binaries (Updated for Intel systems). If you have the choice, install an updated version that directly supports the Intel systems.
If you feel like you must use Migration Assistant to move things over (such as your e-mail), then set it to only transfer data files. Do not allow it to transfer settings and programs.

  • External Hard Drive and iMac Core Duo

I purchased a new iMac Core Duo and also have a iMac G4.
I transferred my data from the old computer to the Core Duo with no problems. I have a Maxtor One Touch II external hard drive on the old mac. Everything transferred well including the external hard drive.... everything worked well until yesterday. Something happened, I don't know what. The Core Duo no longer recognizes my external drive, and I can't reload it. I tried to migrate all of my files from the old mac to the new, But that doesn't work anymore either. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have an awful lot of data that I really would like to have again on the new Core Duo.

I think my new iMac just fried my external Lacie d2. I kept my iphoto library on the d2 and was working in iphoto and suddenly photos started disappearing. When I rebooted, the drive was fried. Disk Utility couldn't repair it.

  • Nikon Coolscan V ED and iMac Core Duo

Anybody using their Coolscan V ED, or another film or flatbed scanner, with the new iMac Core Duo? I plan purchasing the CS V ED in the very near future, but unsure whether it will work well with the new iMac.

Here is my little exchange with Nikon today...
After they referred me to the FAQ that I already read.
ME: "Thank-you for your reply but I still think you've failed to answer my question. The article you refer me to with your link is main reason I contacted you. I'd like you to escalate this issue to somebody that can answer my questions in more detail...
Which BRAND-NEW Macintosh computers are supported with the Nikon LS5000 scanners?
Does Nikon intend to support Mac? If so, then when, since all new Macintosh computers now have Intel processors?
It's already been four months of new Intel Macs, I'd expect Nikon to have at least some small idea of how much longer would before the Mac platform is again supported?
What's even more disturbing is that I only stumbled upon this issue by browsing this support forum. I was on the verge of purchasing at least four and possibly up to eight scanners and corresponding computers. That would have been a financial disaster for my company considering the lack of support and the seeming lack of concern by Nikon regarding the new Mac computers.
NOWHERE in your sales literature or the Nikon Coolscan website does it say that Macs with Intel processors are not supported. The sales literature only states that Macs require at least a G3 processor or better. Most people would read that and assume that a brand new Mac with the latest processor would be better than a G3.
Shame on Nikon for hiding this issue under the rug and not providing a prompt solution for their very loyal customers."
    NIKON: "Hello,
These days new operating system version pop up every other week.
We strive to keep our products up to date with the latest operating systems out there, and work closely with Microsoft and Apple to see that this support comes as quickly as possible.
Apple is still offering systems with the PowerPC processors, like the iBook G4, Power Book G4, and the Power Mac G5.
As of today, we do not support the new Mac systems with the Intel chipset, but this is currently being looked into. We have no other information to offer at this time.
    Thank you,
    Dave"
ME: "These days new operating system version pop up every other week." LOL- You must be thinking of Windows where there are nearly a dozen versions not counting the new Vista.
But I understand. Nikon is working on it and you have no further information. That's fine.
However, your sales literature is seriously flawed. It says that the scanner will be compatible with a G3 or better processor. If your equipment doesn't work with the newer Intel processor, then it's NOT compatible with a G3 or better; it's ONLY compatible with a G3, G4, & G5.
My complaint is that you should either make a note in your literature at least for your vendors or issue an estimated date of when you're going to fix the problem.
As I explained, this is a PRE-SALES question and your attitude towards me is troubling. I was looking to purchase between four and eight of these scanners and because of inaccurate information in YOUR brochures, I almost purchased thousands of dollars of useless computer systems.
Maybe you should forward my question up the chain of command at Nikon... to somebody that cares more about what POTENTIAL customers think.
Meanwhile, I will post this issue at dozens of Mac user forums so that others don't make a big mistake by thinking a new Nikon scanner will work on their new Mac computer system.
    NIKON: "Hello,
We certainly do care about potential customers, which is why we will not offer any software that is not ready to be released. Software development takes a very long time to finalize, and involves a huge amount of testing before it is published publicly. Our timetable for software release for this new technology is unclear at this point, and we apologize for that.
As for the product literature, it will be updated to include this new item in time, and our vendors are supplied with up to date support information on a regular basis. At the time of publication, all information on the brochures was correct and up to date.
Thank you for pointing that out, however, and I will be happy to pass your comments onto our QA team for review.
    Regards,
    Dave"
I think everyone with a Nikon Scanner who is considering the purchase of an Intel Mac or vice-versa should send Nikon a flood of complaints regarding the issue. How long can this really take them? The new Macs have been out for quite a while now.
In my experience, Nikon has excellent equipment but once they identify an issue, they do nothing to resolve it. It gets swept under until the next scanner is released.
Example: The older LS-4000 scanner had firewire communication "issues". Issues that were never fully resolved but the LS-5000 scanner is now USB-2.0

  • Mail - syncing from my iBook to my iMac

I am looking to sync my Mail program from my iBook to my iMac. I have been doing it manually for the last few weeks, but I just realized that I have only been getting my incoming messages. I was looking to sync my sent messages too. I want to stop doing a manual sync and have it all automated. How can I do this? I want to sync my 2 accounts; Inbox, Sent Mail, Junk. Is there an easy way to do this?
p.s. I do not have a .Mac e-mail. My roommate tells me that having one would help. puh...

I may be dragging in this subtopic by the ears, but that may beat adding yet another closely-related topic...
Yes, IMAP enables me to consult the mail messages I maintain on-line, wherever I may roam. But I often need to consult an unpredictable set of older messages that I don't want to clutter up my iDisk with. So, I'd like to maintain the same (sizable) database of "On My Mac" mail messages on my desktop (at home) and on my laptop (everywhere). Can anybody tell me whether the following violates some logical constraint I haven't yet understood?
On my desktop (Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5, running OS 10.5.1), the [user]>Library>Mail>Mailboxes folder contains a big (1.11 GB) folder named "Organize," which is the name I've given to the top-level folder(/mailbox?) within which all my off-line messages reside, appearing in the left-column menu in Mail's Message Viewer. Everything else in [user]>Library>Mail>Mailboxes shows in the finder as ".mbox," but the Organize folder seems to be just a folder, without one of those silly MS-DOS-style extensions we've had imposed on us, of late.
I propose to copy the "Organize" folder to the parallel location in my laptop (MacBook Pro 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, also on OS 10.5.1) and then to keep the two folders in sync with my trusty Qdea Synchronize! X Plus Version 1.2.
Topher Kessler's reply suggests that this might work, but I've had a fair amount of grief when I've tried to mess around with the data structures in Mail under OS X. Am I asking for trouble? Is there anything in the content of a message file stored On My Mac that depends on the specific machine it was originally stored on? So that, for example it might become confused upon transfer to another machine...
The whole point, of course, is to be able to go back to old mail messages while on the road. I seem able to keep other kinds of archives with me, but Mail's been scary...

  • IMac G5 - Duo or G5????

I have two old DVSEs. They have always been buggy, and I am finally thinking of a new computer. I have contemplated a PC, because mine at work have been rock solid, but I am a little STUCK on the form factor of the iMac. So.... I could get an iMac Duo with a 14" under $1300, OR go for a refurb 20" with a G5 for a similar price - opinions?
(I just want to do easy pics, movies, websurf, some word processing, etc.)
    Thanks.

    G'day Brian,
    nice to see you here!
That's a 17" iMac Duo you are talking about, I guess.
A difficult choice. The 20" screen is simply stunning. The G5 will also be happy with the existing software, while the Duo will have to run some stuff in emulation mode under "Rosetta" until new versions come out. Universal binaries of things like Photoshop and MS Office are still a fair way off, and will cost you $$ when they eventually arrive. Against that the superior speed of the duo compensates for this to a fair extent. The regular Apple apps, like Safari and iPhoto, etc are already universal binary, too, and you therefore get the full speed boost from the Duo.
If you still want to use any older OS9 stuff from your DV+, the G5 will be able to run it under "Classic", but the Duo won't run it at all.
With the G5 it depends to some extent which model of G5 it is. The "first generation" models (sold up to May, 2005) had more than their fair share of problems, and I'd be wary about buying one. Some of the next one, the "ALS" models, have had power supply issues, but it is a much more reliable computer than the "first generation". With the final iSight models its a bit early to tell. Internally it is very different to the earlier iMac G5's. The ALS model has the added , long term, advantage, that it is very easily "user serviceable" with a modular construction design intended to allow user replacement of drives, fans, power supplies, RAM and the like. The iSight model (and the Duo) is much less friendly in this area, but may , perhaps, be less likely to need such things. Of course, you also get a faster processor and a built in iSight etc with the final ones.
If we were talking equivalent screen sizes I'd simply say go for the Duo. Its new, inherently significantly faster with the right software, will have a current software bundle and a full 12 month warranty (which, given your unfortunate run with your CRT models, would count for something I would guess) .
That 20" screen sure is nice, though! I use my ALS model 20" with a double page spread for wordprocessing a fair amount of the time. For photographic work and mapping, which I spend a fair amount of time with, its great. Hooked up to a little USB "Elgato EyeTV" unit it doubles as an excellent TV and "video recorder", too.
They are great computers to use. I passed my DV G3 on to my elderly father in law. I really notice the huge difference in speed, image quality and storage capacity whenever I help him out with it.
Whichever way you go you are going to notice a big improvement. If it was me, I'd probably pick the 20", primarily because of its screen and better compatability with existing software, but that's partly a matter of my own usage needs , and partly probably based on "user bias". In your case, the "new goods" factor may be more important.
If possible I'd spend a while playing around with both options at a dealer. THat will give you the chance to see how the screen size versus speed tradeoff balances out for your own personal needs.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Imac Core Duo Crashing ......A Cry For Help

I received my eagerly awaited iMac core duo 17' 160gb. I took it out of the box and it work away fine. When I was installing Norton Anti Virus the installer quit before the full install was complete. I then restarted the iMac and the welcome to OS X progress bar completes and after that all that appears is a blue screen. I do have mouse movement but no login window appears. I have tried reinstalling the OS X software from the software restore disc that came with the iMac but this did not fix the problem. I then opened disk utilty on the the software restore disk and did what first aid was available on this disk, but again no fix. I tried booting from a Disk Warrior bootable disk but this disk will not boot. Through total desperation I opened disk utilty on the restore disk and went to intialise the drive, but the drive will not erase.
All suggestions of a fix or any assistance in fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated. To say that I an frustrated, stressed and demented over this would be a understatement.
    Thanks in Advance
    The Celtictiger

Last time I installed Anti-Virus on one of my Mac's. It was a terrible experience on my G5. Not to say AntiVirus is bad to install, but currently there is absolutely no reason to install one.
Really... don't waste money or cpu cycles on antivirus until there is a reason, right now there is this golden halo that protects mac from viruses. I really don't know why mac's rarely if ever have a virus, but I really don't question it either.

  • Printer recommendations for iMAc Core Duo

Greetings! I need a recommendation from anyone who is successfully using a multi function printer with an iMac Core Duo. I am returning an EPSON CX5800f because the scanning driver does not work. The printer works great but the scanner does not. Any success stories? Thanks Billy D

Hello, again! I am back. I returned the EPSON today and I am looking at an HP OfficeJet 7310 for printing, faxing, and scannng on my iMac Core Duo running OS 10.4.6. Any one with good or bad experiences with the 7310? I received an email back from HP saying that the 7310 would work with Intel Macs but I see no such indication on their web site driver download page. Plus HP has not said that the scanning driver for the 7310 would work with the iMac Core Duo. Any comments? Thanks!

  • .pdf files in iBooks on my iPad don't show in iBooks on my iMac. Why?

when i installed iBooks on my iMac, only my purchased books show in the library.  PDF files I stored in iBooks on my iPad are not showing. Any ideas how I sync the pdf files?  They use a common Apple ID and I use iCloud for the iPad backup.

Did you try using the transfer purchase feature of iTunes? I know that these may not be purchased PDF files, and it is only supposed to work with iTunes purchases, but I have done this myself with PDF files in iBooks.
iTunes Store: Transfer purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
This feature works only for audio, video, and apps that you purchased from the iTunes Store. Any items that you imported from audio CDs or acquired from other sources won't copy from your device to the iTunes library. However, copies of all PDFs and books from your device's iBooks app will transfer to the computer, regardless of whether they were purchased from the iBooks Store. • I cannot open iBooks on my iMac.

When I try to open iBooks on my iMac I get the following message.  I have never been able to open iBooks from day one.  Since I haven't had a need to use it on  my iMac I just let it go, but now I would like to start using it.  What might be wrong?
The last time you opened iBooks, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?
If you choose not to reopen windows, you may have to open and position the windows yourself.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.
