i am going to trade laptops with my wife (13" vs 15"). they are both macbook pros running 10.6.4.
i want to use migration assistant, but everything i've read about it seems like it's meant to install your existing files onto a new (i.e. blank) mac. i haven't seen anything about taking the files from A and putting them onto B, and vice versa. any tips? should i just do this manually using an external HD and forget about migration assistant?

The Migration Assistant can be restricted to transferring single user accounts. Do it with one machine and then reverse the process with the other machine. Ensure that both transferred accounts can log into their new machines and that everything works the same. Once that's finished, delete the original accounts.

Wireless file sharing between two MacBooks

I feel like this is kind of a silly question, but here goes:
Is it possible to set up wireless file sharing between two macs when there is no wireless network available.
For example, if I am on a plane (with no wi-fi) and wan to wirelessely connect to my partners macbook to browse his hard drive, can I do it? Right now, I use a firewire cable when flying, but would love to not have to.

Yes, it's possible to do.
You setup one of the Macs to act as a base station of sorts. If you've got the AirPort Status menu shown you can just use the 'Create Network…' option in that menu to create a new wireless network hosted on this Mac. Just tell the other Mac to connect to that network using the name and security credentials you specified when you created the network, and you're done.

HT6510 Airdrop between two Macbook Pro's is not working in Yosemite

Airdrop is not working between my Macbook Pro Late 2011 and my co-workers Macbook Pro Mid 2012 on Yosemite. We're on the same wireless network. It worked fine in Mavericks.

It's probably that UVerse modem/router you have. I say this because I've run into similar issues with Arris modem/wifi router boxes from Comcast for a few clients. They went out a bought an AirPrint capable printer and configured it on the network. They could print to it from their PCs just fine (IP based printing), but none of their iOS devices would see the printer as an AirPrint device, they couldn't see any printer on the network. The solution was to put their modem into bridge mode (while disabling the WIFI on it) and use a Netgear router behind it in normal fasion. AirPrint worked fine after that. After some further digging, I discovered that Arris has an issue with supporting some Multicase based protocols on their boxes.
My suggestion is to go try AirPrint on another WIFI network and see what happens. If it works, then you have your answer. Obviously, if the first one doesn't work, don't give up... you can't just say it's not the router beause you can't be sure what that other network has for WIFI. Just keep an open mind when testing this. Or you could go get yourself a router and set it up, but that of course would cost you money you may not want to spend until you're 100% sure that this is the case here.

Seems the gateway device that UVerse installs can have similar issues as I described above. At this point, I'd look at that device as your culprit for this. I can't think of anything else that could be causing this to not work.

Migration Assistant between two MacBook Pros, both running 10.9.2

I need to migrate specific apps and data from one MacBook Pro (2.6 GHz Core 2 Duo) to another (2.5 GHz Core 2 Duo), but I don't want to migrate the entire system and all data -- largely because the "Source" HD is 1TB, and the "Destination" HD is 320GB. Both MacBook Pros running Mavericks 10.9.2. Anyone know how to "cherry pick" using Migration Assistant, especially apps that have support files in various folders in the system?

If it is wireless to wireless transfer it will go at less than half of the slowest connection..
Check each mac link speed to the Express.. if either of them is far away or using 2.4ghz instead of 5ghz you will lose lots of speed.

How can a session be setup between two MacBook Pro's at different locations on high speed Internet connections, be setup to have a live recording session in Logic?

My partner and I live on opposite sides of the valley here in Phoenix. About 50 miles apart one way. We are Musicians and are working on a commercial for television, and would like to know if there is a way, between FaceTime and Logic, that we can configure our MacBook Pro's to record sessions together without having to be at the same house? When we FaceTime, he can hear my keyboard through his headphones, but we can't seem to get the signal routed into Logic and register to a track when its record enabled. Is there a way for us to save gas, and record at seperate locations, so he can engineer me and I can engineer him, while we build this project in Logic and Final Cut? Here is what we are using, we have nearly identicle setups, which was planned so we might be able to do something like this. Both of us are using Mid 2012 15" MacBook Pro's with 2.6GHz Intel i7 processors and 16GB RAM. The only difference between the two MacBooks is that his has an Optical Drive, but I removed mine and replaced it with a 2nd SSD Drive, so I have two Samsung 840 Pro's each with 512GB in my MacBook Pro. His just has one Samsung 840 Pro with 512GB. We both use Focusrite Saffire Liquid 56 Firewire Audio Interfaces, and we both use Logic Studio 9 Academic. I don't know if you need to know what we are using in order to help us figure out how to configure the MacBooks for a live session, so I figured I would give you those details just in case. If you need any more information, just let me know? Oh, we both have high speed cable Internet connections. Mine is 150Mbps speed which is the absolute fastest I can get in my area. And his is only a 50Mbps speed line.
Again, what we are looking to do is have a LIVE recording session, in Logic, with him at his house and me at my house. When we FaceTime each other, we can pretty much hear each others keyboards as if they were part of the conversation, and as crystal clear as we can hear our own when recording, but we can't seem to record enable an Audio track in Logic and route that keyboard signal into Logic and record it so we can engineer each other without either one of us having to drive to the others house, to be there to do it. If any of this even makes sense, I'm not quite sure how to better explain it. So hopefully you get what I mean, otherwise just say so, and I will try to do a better job explaining it. :-)
Anyone who can help us with this little problem would be greatly appreciated, and quite a hero in these two humble Musicians Worlds!! So from both of us, THANK YOU in advance for any input you might be able to give us. I look forward to hearing any and all suggestions.

You and ALOT of people are attempting to do this, myself included.
Unfortunately at this point (to my knowledge) it's a pretty CRAP setup involved that will likely leave you frustrated.
HOWEVER:
A few things CAN be done:
IF you are getting live audio from your partner over the internet, you can re-direct that audio directly into Logic using a program called SoundFlower.
There are a few alternatives to SoundFlower, like JackTrip, and.....(the name eludes me)
(SoundFlower is from a company called Cyling 74 who also makes Max MSP. )
Once in Logic, you set your audio inputs to the track to be Soundflower. (either 16 inputs, or in this case 2)
That all being said, regardless to speed, you are still going to experience latency in the connection, and THAT is the part that will likely drive you to the mad house.
THIS all being said, I believe there are websites out there that are set up to actually do this kind of thing, (at least there WERE) but likely membership costs, and other "hidden" problems that you only learn about after you have signed on the dotted line. (Hopefully I am wrong?)
If you don't need to do a "live jam", there are always solutions like DropBox that work very well for exchanging large files quickly.
If you want to record live MIDI input from his keyboard, I am unaware of any solutions for this.
Due to the popularity of the iPad, you might want to look into the App store, and see if there is something available.

How do I transfer files/settings from my macbook pro to my new iMac?

My macbook pro's logic board is bad, so it does not power on. Is there any way to still transfer files or settings from the hard drive? An adapter of some sort? Maybe the Apple Store can when I get the iMac?
All I am really concerned about is my iTunes database and my firefox profiles.

The HD will probably have to be removed from the MacBook Pro and connected to a USB adapter or placed in a dock to get your data off of it. I would take the MacBook Pro along, the folks at the Apple Store should be more than happy to help transfer your data to a new iMac.

CD Sharing Between Two MacBook Pros?

I'm wanting to share the CD drive on my new MacBook Pro so that I can access it from my older 1st generation MacBook Pro. Is this possible or only available on the Air? I'm running 10.5.5 on both machines.

How can I set up a VPN between two MacBook Pros

I am about to buy a new MacBook Pro, I will be leaving my old MacBook Pro in my office in Nicaragua and traveling with my new MBP. I would like to be able to access files on my old laptop from the road, I imagine using some sort of VPN software to patch into my old computer as long as it is on and connected to the Internet.
Can you help me to set this up. It feels as though it could be difficult, but I imagine it si much simpler than I think.

AirDrop not working between two MacBook Pros

I have a late-2013 Retina MBP running Mavericks. When trying to send files via AirDrop between my laptop and another MBP (non-Retina, circa 2010) also running Mavericks, I have intermittent success. Both machines can usually see each other, and I am able to attempt to send files between them, but more than half the time the receiving computer fails to receive the request. It just never shows up. Everything seems to work fine on the sending end.
It doesn't matter which machine is doing the sending or receiving. Restarting doesn't matter. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, no rhyme or reason I can see. Just now I tried to send a PDF from the non-Retina to the Retina: success. Five minutes later I tried another PDF: no luck. I tried to send a file from the Retina to the non-Retina: again, no luck. Both machines can still see each other. Both laptops are only a foot apart and didn't even move in the interim. What is going on?

Searching around, one reasonable thing to try is trashing these preference files:
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.P2PSupervisor.plist
/Library/Preferences/System Configuration/CaptiveNetworkSupport/Settings.plist
Maybe restart.
Other things:
Reset NVRAM and PRAM
start up in Safe Mode
Sacrifice a lamb.

How to setup thunderbolt bridge between two macbook Pro (retina and 2011 )?

I have a new 13" MB Pro retina and want to use the thunderbolt bridge btween the 13" and the 15" MB pro 2011.
Somehow I cannot do anything with this, and on both laptops it shows the the Thunderbolt slots as "Inactive". I have connected the the two laptops via the new Thunderbolt cable.
I looked around and there is no documentation on how to make this happen. The documentations are very thin or non existent.
I want to use this mechanism to transfer my data from my old MB pro to the new retina one.

unfortunately the option to select thunderbolt/firewire never comes up.
It directly goes to the options from where to transfer and then upcon clicking on it. It keeps on looking with the spinner icon showing and it never finds the other computer.
It does see it through the wiresless but not through thunderbolt.
The more I look to make this happen the more I am convinved that this feature is not fully baked and does not really work as the documentation on "Thunderbolt bridge" setup is next to none existent and only one perons through macrumors has supposedly managed this. It is really a shame as I was looking forward to use this new capability.

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant. If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

MacBook Pro: Swapping Hard Drives Between Two Identical Macs?

I have two Macbook Pro notebooks. They are both the June 11th 2012 models both with cd/dvd drives. They both have Mavericks installed on both.
I want to give my 15 inch to my son who has the 13 inch. They 13 will be mine and the 15 his.
Can i just swap his 750HD from the 13 and put it into the 15? Can i also remove my 250 Samsung pro SSD from my 15 and put it in his 13?
What are some ways i can go about this that are easy?

PS: Like i said they both run mavericks and they are the same generation MBP from June 2012 release from Apple. Except one is a 2.5 i5 13 inch and the other is a 15 inch 2.3 Quad i7.

are each of your laptops associated with your respective Apple IDs? If so, then that might be a fly in the ointment when it comes to updating apps purchased through the Mac App Store, if the tie-in involves your MacBook Pros’ serial numbers as well as your Apple IDs. (I don’t know whether that’s the case or not.)
The disks can certainly be exchanged physically between the two portables — you could try it for a while, and if you encounter a problem, you can exchange them back and consider alternative (but unfortunately less convenient) approaches.
