Migration to new Mac

I upgraded from a pre-intel Mac running Leopard to a new iMac running Snow Leopard. I used the Migration Assistant and the old Mac had a Time Machine backup. Can I just continue to run TimeMachine as before? Will it start all over again with a new Initial Backup? Many thanks

Yes.

Also yes. You should get the prompt in #B5 of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

The keyword is "migration." Migrating or copying files for Adobe applications usually does not work. Not all of the necessary subsidiary files are copied to the right location.

This is a known bug which began to occur with the 10.4.8 update. I suggest you file a bug report with Apple. Its quite annoying and hopefully, the more people who contact Apple about it, the more importance they will give to fixing the problem.

If you are syncing using iCloud, try going to System Preferences/iCloud (computers) and checking Safari. If it is checked, try deselecting it, wait 10-15 seconds, and then check it again.

  • User ID Not Recognized in App Store after Migrating to new Mac

I migrated to a new Mac using Migration Assistant being careful to create an identical user account on the new Mac. All went fine. When it came time to update apps through MAS, some apps updated and some would not (e.g. Pixelmator) and MAS tells me "You have updates available for other accounts" and asks me to log out and sign in as another user – but the user name is exactly the same as my current user name. There is definitely only one user account on the Mac, so what is going on?

Cracked it – thanks. The message that MAS displays is not clear and looks like it's referring to User Name. Also MAS does not have a Preferences dialog where you would normally enter Account/Apple ID details, but it's under the Store menu item – confusing.

  • Time Machine consistency after migrating to new Mac

I have just migrated my Macbook Black to my new MacBook Silver, and I am away from my Time Machine backup. I have a new account name on my new MacBook Silver, so as to not cause any kind of disambiguation error. How do I continue with my Time Machine backup with my new machine? Is there some way of connecting the data on this new machine with the backup that was generated on the old machine?
    Thanks for your help.

Hi, I have a similar problem. I restored my new Mac with the Time Machine from the old Mac. Now I want to keep on using incremental. Why I can't?
Because it's a new and different Mac, and TM backs up Macs, not just drives, or files and folders. Besides, unless they're absolutely identical (same make & model of everything internal and external), there are different drivers, etc.
Also, I can't see that option of "Browse Other Time Machines".
From the TM icon in the menubar, where you normally see +Enter Time Machine+, if you press Option, you should see +Browse Other Time Machine Disks.+
My problem is, I didn't change any file since the old Mac in any file (except tiny changes), but now it tells me that in order to make a new back up it needs a lot more space than I have in the Time Machine. If I had the old Mac it would simply update an incremental...
If you'd done a complete restore on your old system, TM would make a complete, new, full backup. It may seem strange, but reloading a file is the same as changing it, as far as TM is concerned.
    Here's the scoop: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338
Think of it this way: TM backs-up everything, not just your "raw" data. Any change you make to a file or folder, even just moving it, means something changed, so TM backs it up.

  • Uninstall problem in cc applications after time machine migration to new mac

Newbie to cc. Having problems with cc programs that were migrated across to new iMac via Time Machine back up when setting up new mac.
Attempting to open PS cc results in error message 86. I have now uninstalled Creative Cloud program and a PS cc program in Utilities via Adobe Installer in Ulilities however, (other copies?) of the programs PS cc and Bridge cc, the only 2 cc programs I have so far, are listed in my Applications folder.
I think I need to remove them both from the Applications folder but am unsure how to do this safely. There is no Abobe Uninstaller now in Utilities as it was empty after uninstall removal of duplicate? programs noted earlier so I deleted that too.
Should I send them to trash? And then perhaps I can start afresh with new installs of Creative Cloud and required cc programs.
    Any advice gratefully received.
    Thank, Barry

    Hi Jakekira14,
We never suggest our customer's to move Adobe softwares using Timemachine because it causes launch/Licensing issues. I would request you to kindly delete all the Adobe folders and then install everything from scratch. To remove the left over's, please delete the following folders from your machine.
    Click on Go>Go to
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe
    /Library/Preferences/Com.adobe.....

  • Time Machine after migration to new Mac

So, I just got a new Mac, and used the option to copy settings and files from a Time Machine volume to the new machine. Now that everything's run, though, I can't use Time Machine to backup the new Mac -- it says "Volume not found". I've Googled a bit, but most of the troubleshooting seems to assume that the drive is missing or won't mount -- the drive is there, but the Time Machine software won't use it.
    What are my options here?

    Hi VK
    A supplementray question:
I have one i-mac happily backing up with Time Machine to an external hard drive.
I have just bought a second i-mac (stops the fighting!) and propose to use migration assistant to move my [admin] account from the old to the new i-mac leaving two other accounts on the old one. I see from your posts that it seems as if Time Machine will start a new back up series for the new i-mac's back ups. But what about the old i-mac? Will that continue to extend the existing Time Machine back up files, albeit without my transferred account and its files? If so, should I partition the external drive and start the new back ups from the new i-mac on this new partition. I'd like to end up with the old i-mac continuing to build its Time Machine back ups (less my account and its files) and have a new back up series from the new i-mac building to a separate partition on the external drive.
Does this make sense? I can't see an answer in the forum to what must be a reasonably common issue in this expandin mac world.

  • I want to migrate to new Mac. How do I also Restore the partition with old Snow Leopard?

I will install a second internal HD first, and use Time Machine Restore to it with the Migration Assistant on the new Mac's Mountain Lion.
Then I will erase the preinstalled Mountain Lion internal HD, and:
How do I now proceed to Restore to an internal partition on the new Mac, my (still) left Time Machine copy of Snow Leopard,( just a spare system partition, also for Power PC Apps)?
If I install a new Snow Leopard first from DVD and then tries the Migration Assistant in it, can it us a Mountain Lion Time Machine backup of the Snow Leopard partition? Or can Mountain Lion Migration Assistant be used for Restoring and Migrating Snow Leopard.
I do not have a Snow Leopard Time Machine backup copy of the partition left. Otherwise I could have taken that on a new installed Snow Leopard.
Thankful for all ideas, also I understand that HD Restore fully on the whole partition without using Migration Assistant will not work.
    Another question:
I hope that I can use my new Mac with the old Mac OS X licenses and transfer the new preinstalled Mac OS Mountain Lion license to the old Mac, before giving it away?
    Thanks,
    /groundliner

    Thanks!
I'm not familiar with the issue of what Mac OS new Macs manages. That puts things in another perspective. I have Lion on a fast 8 GB USB Stick, can I not boot from that either? Of Course, I may be able to put the Mountain Lion Installer on the stick, instead. It could not upgrade the stick to Mountain Lion due to not having enough space for that. But I maybe could fix that. Just wondering - I have several hard disks around, I could try to put the preinstalled Mountain Lion OS version on one of those. Best copying method?
I did not know that transfer of OS Mountain Lion was not allowed. Leopard license document mentions transfer of hardware and software to another person. So I thought the Mac App Store license was similar - bought for and on just this old iMac, that it also could be transferred to another person. Which would solve the problem for my friend who should have it!
I keep planning, but I think running old Power PC Apps maybe was no big deal.

  • After migrating to new mac, email folders are lost.

I used Migration Assistant to transfer files and data from my old MacBook Air to my new MacBook Air. Everything seems to have transferred just fine, except for my email folders. I have tried plugging in Time Machine to restore them from my backups on my old mac, but the new mac doesn't recognize backups on the old one, so I can't access it through Time Machine while in the mail program. So then I tried searching for my mail files, which (according to what I've read) should be in Library/Mail, but I have no Mail folder that I can find by that path (or, really, by any other). I believe both macs are running Mountain Lion.

That Library folder is actually the one in your home folder, which is hidden. You can view it by clicking the Go menu in Finder while holding the Option key down - you'll then see a shortcut to Library.
The mail is held in ~/Library/Mail/V2, inside folders named for each mail account. You should be able to use the File - Import Mailboxes menu in Mail to retrieve them.

  • After migrating to new Mac Pro Dreamweaver won't launch, says missing menus.xml file. How do I resolve this?

After migration to a new Mac Pro Dreamweaver CS6 won't launch. It says it is missing menus.xml file. How do I resolve this?

    Hi rustyg12,
    Go to Applications/Adobe Dreamweaver CS6/Configuration/Menus/menus.bak
You'll see a menus.xml there - it is a backup copy of the actual menus.xml file that DW uses.
Copy it from that folder, paste it 1 level above (in Menus folder).
Fire up DW. See if it works.

  • Migration to new Mac from FireWire clone

Hi. I'm planning to buy a new iMac in a few weeks when the line is refreshed. I'm currently running my 2006 iMac from a FireWire clone as the internal disk went south just before Christmas.
What I'm planning to do is use this clone drive to migrate all my stuff using Setup Assistant on first boot of the new Mac. I believe I can do this using the "another volume on this Mac" option (please correct me if I'm wrong).
    However, I have two questions…
    1) Should I connect the FireWire drive before I turn the new Mac on, or after?
    2) As this clone drive is set to be the boot drive on my current iMac, will that cause problems in terms of transferring settings? By which I mean, will the setting be transferred to have the backup drive boot the new Mac, instead of the new internal disk?
    Many thanks.

Thanks. For some reason I already have one of those cables - not sure why I bought it originally because I've never used it. Have a feeling it might be something to do with music.
Good fortune to have on at hand!
Anyway, yes I'll probably try migrating from the FW clone using Setup Assistant on first boot. I've done it before with other Macs and had no trouble.
Then you should have no trouble.

  • Migration to new mac fails

I just got a new macbook and am trying to migrate from my old macbook. Both are running 10.6.6. I hook them up via Ethernet and run Migration Assistant. After I type the passcode from the new mac onto the old mac it starts with "Preparing information" for a minute. The old mac then gives me a "the network connection failed" error followed by the same error on the new mac.
I don't want to copy the files over manually, so any help would be very appreciated.
E: Something I forgot to mention that might be important. The old mac's logicboard is starting to go; would that have something to do with the transfer not working?

How do you know that the logic board is starting to go?
Of course, that could be a large part of your troubles. It might be easier to remove the drive from the old MB and put it into an external enclosure that you can then attach directly to the new MB.

  • Problem after migrating to new Mac

Hi, I changed my Mac from an iBook to a new Mac Mini running 10.8.2
I had Dreamweaver installed from the Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium. Version 9.0 Build 3481
Dreamweaver was working fine before I migrated all my files on old Mac to the new one.
Now when I launch DW I get a window with a question mark & another saying what version & build I have.
When I "Get Info' on DW3 in my applications folder size is 298,696,470 bytes (302.4 MB on disk) for 249 items in case that helps.
I thought to re-install DW from my instal disc.
Dragged old version to trash, then read the readme in the installer & put it back in Applications.
I tried to use the un-installer as directed but when I enter my password in "Set up"it says "Required resources are missing."
I thought to try to intall over the old version but when I start to install I get the same "Required resources are missing." message.
(Photoshop from the same suite is working fine, also Adobe Acrobat.
I'd also like to try Fireworks now I have an Intel Mac.)
How to proceed to get going again with DW?
    plmk?
    Thanks.

Thanks Preran, I chatted using that chat box & was forwarded to the instilation team.
They sugested downloading the CS3 Design Premium software for a fresh start but the link they gave me wouldn't accept my login, maybe because I bought though a University who has an account there.
They told me:  CS3 hasn't been tested with Mountain Lion...
I tried launching Bridge & that worked OK.
I thought about trashing all the apps ...
    But I didn't
I tried putting in the intall disc & re-installing over the old version.
I just installed the 2 apps I had already installed & shared componets.
They( PS & DW) now seem to be working fine so far, didn't ask for any serial number at all.
Just had to delete & add browers again in DW.
    So seems to working OK.
If anyone is in same position I'm not sure if the clean tool is the way to go.
Mabe it helped in long run but at 1st it just made it so I couldn't use the apps. at all.
Thanks for being here, that did help.

  • Fusion VM (Windows) won't start after migration to new Mac

    Friends,
I just bought a new MacBook Pro, onto which I have migrated my old Mac.  I had Windows 7 installed as a VM on the old Mac, but when I try to start it on the new machine I get no response. Fusion starts and I see the black screen with the "PLAY" icon, but clicking on it does nothing.
Is this due to a change in my system's environmental variables? I know, for instance, that the name of the partition on the new MacBook is different to the name on the old Mac.  Where/how would I correct for this on the Mac or in Fusion?
    Thank you

Windows in VM is going to know it's on a different machine, so you'll still have to hop through Microsoft's hoops or you won't get updates.
Just an FYI: when moving a Fusion virtual machine, the first time you run the virtual machine, you are prompted if you "moved it" or "copied it".  Selecting "moved it" will retain the UUID and prevent Windows from prompting for reactivation.  (However, if it is a copy of the virtual machine and you wanted to run both copies simultaneously on the same network, you must select "copied it" otherwise the copies can't run at the same time.)
If one did select "copied it" accidentally, then just follow the reactivation prompts.  As long as you're not reactivating a lot then it usually will work the normal way over the internet.  Even if you're forced to call, just tell the support rep that you're reinstalling Windows and type in the really long code that they say.  The few times I've had to call, it was less than 15 minutes.  Again, as long as you're not reactivating a lot (so looking suspiciously like a pirate,) reactivation is a pain, but relatively quick.

  • Aperture asks for original serial number after migration to new MAC

After migrating my software and files from my iMac to a new Mac Mini. Aperture asks for serial number first time I wanted to use it. Will not accept the serial number from either my first, Aperture 2 version of my Aperture 3 upgrade. I believe I never had version 1 - can't find amongst my software collection. Website support doesn't seem to allow me to display the software dtails I have registered with Apple over the years. How can I get this information?

Try Troubleshooting Professional Application Serial Numbers and if that doesn't help see Pro Application Replacement Serial Numbers
Apple support has been pretty good in the past suplying new serial numbers with the bare minimun of documentation.
    good luck
Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - reading your post it is not clear but if this version of 3 is an upgrade from 2 you will need both serial numbers. First enter the serial number from version 2 then the number from 3
