Minimum UPS for Xserve G4

I was wondering what the minimum rackmount UPS for a Xserve G4 Dual 1.3GHz would be. I was thinking of getting a Smart-UPS SC 450VA 120V. I only have a 4U rack.

As DaddyPaycheck indicated, it depends mainly how long the UPS should be able to power the XServe.
If you just want to use it for filtering power and have a decent time period to shut down the server, a small UPS like the one you mentioned is surely more than sufficient.
But if you intend to keep the server working during a (short) power outage, a more stronger UPS is recommended. We currently have two XServes and some network equipment on a 1200 VA unit, which appears acceptable for our environment (last year just one power outage that took less than five minutes).
Also take a look into the near future. When you already plan to get another server or other computer equipment soon, you may invest into a more powerful UPS right away.

  • UPS for the G5's

I wrote APC for their recommended UPS for a G5. $839, dedicated 20 amp service! We just added $1000 to the cost of owning a G5! Here is there response. What are the rest of you doing? Blind sided, Bill
    Response (Patricia Mandelare) - 08/22/2006 10:45 AM
    Dear Bill,
Thank you for contacting APC's email support on 08/21/2006 04:46 PM. I would be happy to assist you. I apologize for the length of time it has taken to receive a response from us.
I did some research on the new Apple PowerMac G5 for a previous customer and found we only recommend Smart-UPS units for Dual G5 or Xserve MACs. A Back-UPS RS 1500 most likely would go into overload with this server attached. A Smart-UPS 2200 would be adequate to power this computer. The Apple PowerMac G5 has a large inrush current when waking up and going into sleep mode. The Smart-UPS 2200 should be able to cover the inrush current when this server wakes up or goes into sleep mode. The Smart-UPS 2200 (APC model number SUA2200) would be at approximately 38% of its capacity and provide approximately 38 minutes of runtime for your G5 PowerMac. You may click on the link below to view the technical specifications for the SUA2200:
    http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspecindex.cfm?basesku=SUA2200
Please be aware that the SUA2200 has a NEMA 5-20 input plug. This is a 120 volt 20 AMP T-shaped plug and it does require a dedicated 120 volt 20 AMP circuit in order to draw the full 2,200 VA capacity of the unit.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me by responding to this incident. It would be my pleasure to ensure that your issue is quickly resolved!

    Thank you for choosing APC!

Grab a APC 1500VA Smart UPS (black unit). It supports USB, has 8 AC outlets, and is NEMA 5-15P on the UPS cable (standard wall plug).
Loads with a Quad, 7800GT and 3GB RAM is about 35% with dual LCD monitors and a Z5500 5.1 Speaker setup. G5 reports about 28 minutes of runtime at this load.
System never goes above 40% at full load. There is a small inrush current that bumps it up to about 40-45%, but nothing major or to even consider worrying about.
It's never overloaded the UPS (red overload LED + Alarm), even when you turn the UPS off and back on, and everything attached to it comes back on all at once (including the G5).
I've easily ran 2 additional P4/Opteron systems off the same UPS with no troubles.
APC is talking bollocks when they recommend a 2200VA unit, and a 20 Amp service. The G5 I think is rated at 10 Amps *maximum*, and anything over that would probably fry the PSU. I doubt that it would hit half of that even with 16GB of RAM.
The unit is about $300-$500 I think these days. I wouldn't run anything that says Back-UPS because of quality issues, personally. Definately grab a Smart-UPS for a G5 at the minimum, but that's just my opinion.

APC does provide a list of UPS's in their website, I would recommend looking it over at:

Perhaps  you will be able to locate one that closely fits your needs. I believe only plugging in your iMac is a short sited solution, my recommendation would be to protect certain critical peripherals such as backup hard drives. They can be as important as teh computer. Devices I would omit are items such as  printers, cameras, modems etc...

  • How to set minimum size for the 'location' box in toolbars?

I reorganized my toolbars by merging the location and tabs bar. I have the location on the left hand side and the tabs *next* to it, like this:
    [ (<)(>) [LOCATION] /tab\/tab\/tab\ ]
Unfortunately when the number of tabs increases, the location box becomes so small that I cannot even see the url of the site I'm in...
Is there a way to force a minimum width for the location box? I couldn't find a setting in about:config for it (I imagine that this would be a browser.urlbar setting)

You rock! The combination of fixed width tabs with the stylish Add-on, and the single line of script below just made my day!
    #main-window[sizemode="maximized"] #TabsToolbar, #TabsToolbar > #urlbar-container { min-width: 350px; }

  • What are the real minimum requirements for Mountain Lion?

What are the real minimum requirements for Mountain Lion. Currently running Snow Leopard. I have a late 2006 Model: iMac6,1. Specs: 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, 3 GB 667 MHz DDR2, and the optional nVidia GeForce 7600GT c/w 256MB GDDR2. The advertisement is stating a 2007 model as the minumum, however the fastest 2006 Gen Plastic iMac should be faster then the slowest 2007 Gen Aluminum iMac7,1?

From a previous posting from some else, I saw it was the 32bit versus 64bit video card driver being the issue. I was wondering if the optional video card I have installed also was limited to the 32bit issue. 64bit drivers exist for the 7600 GT GPU.

  • Repair Utility for  xServe RAID?

We have an xServe with an attached RAID consisting of four 350 GB drives. The drives are set up as a RAID. Due to storms/hot weather (air conditioning failed) the server restarted and the RAID powered down. The xServe is fine but the RAID is not functioning. From RAID Admin the drives all show up and are OK but the array is not showing up. Is there any disk repair utility that would be useful on a RAID?
xServe RAID   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
xServe RAID   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The fact that it's showing up as spares is a significant problem. The host won't recognize it until the RAID recognizes the array. There is no separate utility to help you with this, other than RAID Admin.
What firmware version is on the array? If it's 1.5, there's a "recognize array" option that you should try. If it's an older version, I'd tell you it would be nice if you could have gone back in time and upgraded the firmware. Since that's not possible, you should call AppleCare (assuming you have got APS&S for Xserve RAID, or the machine is < 1 year old) and inquire about your options.

Buy the Snow Leopard retail installer (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA).
That will take you to 10.6.3.
If required you can then use the combo updater to get to the latest version, 10.6.8 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399)

  • Minimum Spec for FCE4: cheapest Mac Mini?

I'm looking to get a Mac Mini primarily to record endoscopic video (s-video) via a Canopus ADVC 55 using Final Cut Express. Looking at the minimum requirements for FCE4 it seems the cheapest model with 2GB RAM should be way more than adequate. The specs don't even mention hard drive speed.
However, by todays standards 2GB is fairly minimal, and the 5400 rpm 2.5" hard drives are quite slow. I have used FCE4 on an original white MacBook and frequently got dropped frames when recording (which lost the entire recording each time), a problem that disappeared when I upgraded to a MacBook Pro.
If used purely for recording, and if the hard drive is regularly cleared (video files moved to a Mac Pro for processing) will there be any problems with only 2GB of RAM, or the speed of the hard drive?
Because this is to go into an operating theatre where space is limited, I would prefer that I don't have the hassle or expense of an external Firewire hard drive (and I'm guessing the single Firewire port may be an issue).
Looking at the spec for the Mac Mini Server it looks much more suitable, 2 7400 rpm hard drives, 4GB RAM - but cost wise I think will be harder to persuade my employer!

I'm afraid I cannot really answer your question as I don't need / use the features of the snow leopard server software. Hardware wise the differences add more ram, 2 hard drives (and they're faster) but no optical drive (with the option of connecting one externally). Other than that it comes with snow leopard server which allows you to use it as a normal mac, but additionally can be set up as mail server, file server, and a bunch of utilities to help manage this (not sure how accurate my understanding of the differences between the software).
Incidentally the normal version of snow leopard has a certain amount of server functionality anyway, eg filesharing, web hosting etc. I think the server edition mainly provides lots of tools to take this further.
It definitely would require configuring, and you would need other stuff like a router to connect the computers together which would also need configuring. But not much different to linking a bunch of normal macs together (if you're usinng it as a file server). I might be wrong but I don't think the connected computers can run on it's OS like some of these dumb terminal systems can.

  • Pop-ups for parameter value insertion don't appear

    Hi,
I am using Web Intelligence for creating a report that allows custom parameter values to be inserted via pop-up.
The problem is such pop-ups for parameter value insertion don't appear on the various web browsers I make use of.
    (I.E. versioni, Firefox versioni)
Any idea on how to solve such issue?
    thanks in advance,
    SC

I suppose that you mean query prompts, that are parameters that are asked to the user in order to filter the data.
Which version of BOE are you using?. If you are using BOE XI R2, that problem happens when you use Java 1.6 (only when editing the document), you should use Java <=1.5 (you can check the error in the java console while you execute the report).
I think that problem was solved in a SP (not sure which SP solves this ¿SP4?)

  • Open comment pop-ups for highlighted text (on Adobe Reader for Android)

On my computer, I use the software Docear which allows to import highlighted text and comments from pdf documents. This function in Docear only works, if the reader copies highlighted text into the comment fields at the moment of highlighting. When using a reader on a PC, the settngs can be adjusted in order that this works. (Preferences>Commenting>Automatically open comment pop-ups for comments other than notes).
It would be very practical for me to do this on my tablet (Android). However, as far as I know, this is not possible in the Adobe Reader for Android. Or is there any possibility to do this? If not, would it be possible to include this on a wishlist?

    Hi,
This functionality is not available for Adobe Reader on Android. However, we have made a note of the same and shall try to incorporate it in one of our future releases.
    Thanks,

  • Minimum requirements for home server

I am looking to get a cheap iMac, Mini or iBook to use as a home server to run iTunes 24/7. I will be attaching an external HD for storage space for my media and will stream wirelessly to Apple TV over 802.11g using an Airport Express. What would be the minimum requirement for such a setup? Would the minimum requirement be what the latest version of iTunes require?
    Message was edited by: Mac4lfe

Hi Mac4lfe: If you want to SYNCH between the Mac and the ATV, then any G3 will do, just expect the synching to be slow. If you want to STREAM from the Mac to ATV, then a G3 will do for music but not for video. If you want to stream video, a G4 will do, but you will get a lot of beachballs when you do anything on iTunes and sometimes the streaming will fail. I suggest you get the cheapest Intel Mac, you will have a much better experience when streaming. Lastly, remember you will need a screen for the Mini, there will always be warnings, error messages, updates, etc in iTunes that you need a screen, mouse and keyboard for. Very lastly, you can just get the ATV and buy music, TV shows, Movies and rent movies without a Mac. 160GP shall be enough. I have 40 movies, 20 full TV seasons and 6000 songs and am just over 400GB.

    Thanks, Rigby.

If you are using Ethernet to connect your Mac to the Time Capsule, are you allowing at least 2-3 minutes for Time Machine to fully load when you open the application to see your backups?
If you are using wireless to connect, you may need to allow 8-10 minutes or longer for everything to fully load, depending on the speed of your wireless connection.
If you see only white time "bars" on the timeline at the right of the screen, you are seeing temporary backups. Permanent backups are displayed with purple "bars".

  • Condition type PMIN Minimum Price for material

    Hello
We have a requirement where we need to maintain minimum price of material in master.
Whenever in sales order price is entered and is lower than minium price for material maintained it should automatically add the difference as surcharge. If the price maintained is more than the minimum price maintained it should not do anything.
I guess we have to use Ctype PMIN for this. I amy using this condition type have created a condition record and maintained a minimum price for this material f09 as rs 1000
Now when i am creating sales order price picked up from pricing condition record for that customer is 500 . Now it should automatically add Rs 500 in condition line item for condition type PMIN.
What is happening is it is showing me my base price as 500 and it is adding PMIN as 1000 to the base price and showing total base price as 1500
If price maintained in pricing condition record is more than 1000 for ex 1200 even then too it is adding PMIN as 1000 and showing total base price as 2200.
Please let me know what am i missing...
    Regards
    SANJEEV

-T code VK11 - Maintain condition records - You can use the upper and lower limits functionality in the condition records for those specific materials.
-Also Make this condition type as mandatory then check it out.
