Minus query returning row

Hi
One of my sql minus query is returning row even though both the statements are having same value.
My query is following :
SELECT UNIQUE EMP_AGG_DW_PAYROLL_TOT_FTE_CNT,EMP_AGG_PAY_DEM_EMP_SKEY
FROM DW.AGG_EMP_ACCT_COMPENSATIONS
WHERE EMP_AGG_DW_EFF_START_DT='1-jan-2006'
AND EMP_AGG_PAY_DEM_EMP_SKEY IN (133607,141955)
MINUS
select * from (
SELECT SUM(CS),PAY_DEM_EMP_SKEY FROM (
SELECT SUM(CP)/24 CS,PAY_DEM_EMP_SKEY FROM (
SELECT COUNT(PAY_DEM_DW_PAYROLL_FTE_COUNT) CP,PAY_DEM_EMP_SKEY FROM
DW.PAYROLL_DEMOGRAPHICS A,MRADMIN_PROFPROCDT MP
WHERE PAY_DEM_DW_PAYROLL_FTE_COUNT=1
AND PAY_DEM_DW_PAYROLL_ADJUST_IND = 0
AND PAY_DEM_EMP_SKEY IN (133607,141955)
AND (TRUNC(A.PAY_DEM_PAY_DT) BETWEEN TRUNC(MP.D_BEGIN_DATE)
AND TRUNC(MP.D_END_DATE))
GROUP BY PAY_DEM_EMP_SKEY)GROUP BY PAY_DEM_EMP_SKEY
UNION ALL
SELECT SUM(CP)/48 CS,PAY_DEM_EMP_SKEY FROM (
SELECT COUNT(PAY_DEM_DW_PAYROLL_FTE_COUNT) CP,PAY_DEM_EMP_SKEY FROM DW.PAYROLL_DEMOGRAPHICS
WHERE PAY_DEM_DW_PAYROLL_FTE_COUNT=.5
AND PAY_DEM_DW_PAYROLL_ADJUST_IND = 0
AND PAY_DEM_EMP_SKEY IN (133607,141955)
GROUP BY PAY_DEM_EMP_SKEY)GROUP BY PAY_DEM_EMP_SKEY )
GROUP BY PAY_DEM_EMP_SKEY
This is returning two rows.
When I run queries seperatly then i am getting following result :
EMP_AGG_DW_PAYROLL_TOT_FTE_CNT EMP_AGG_PAY_DEM_EMP_SKEY
0.0416666666666667 133607
0.0416666666666667 141955
SUM(CS) PAY_DEM_EMP_SKEY
0.0416666666666667 133607
0.0416666666666667 141955
I am unable to get the exact reason behind me.
Any help is higly appreciated.

Probably some differences that are not shown due to rounding as in example below?

• Is the order in which a UNION ALL query returns rows guaranteed?

Guys
I'm doing a kind of query where I want to return matching rows in a priority order and take the first one. THink of it as getting the most specific error message for a particular context.
SELECT * FROM (
SELECT msg FROM errormessages WHERE device = 'x'
UNION ALL
SELECT msg FROM errormessages WHERE client = 'y'
UNION ALL
SELECT msg FROM (SELECT msg from errormessages WHERE class LIKE 'generic_' ORDER BY class)
UNION ALL
SELECT 'missing error message' FROM dual
WHERE ROWNUM =1
If UNION ALL is guaranteed to return rows in this order, great. If not, would it be better to have:
SELECT * FROM ( SELECT * FROM(
SELECT 1 as ord, msg FROM errormessages WHERE device = 'x'
UNION ALL
SELECT 2, msg FROM errormessages WHERE client = 'y'
UNION ALL
SELECT 4+SUBSTR(class, 7, 1), msg FROM errormessages WHERE class LIKE 'generic_'
UNION ALL
SELECT 9999, 'missing error message' FROM dual
) ORDER BY ord )
WHERE ROWNUM =1Or, another option:
SELECT msg FROM(
SELECT
CASE
WHEN device = 'x' THEN 1
WHEN client = 'y' THEN 2
WHEN class LIKE 'generic_' THEN 4+SUBSTR(class, 7, 1)
END as ord, msg
FROM (
SELECT * FROM errormessages WHERE device = 'x' OR client = 'y' OR class LIKE 'generic_'
UNION ALL
SELECT 999, 'missing error' FROM dual
) ORDER BY ord
)WHERE ROWNUM =1As you can see there is a complication in the generic; devices may advertise that they accept 1,2,3 or 4 lines of info, so I want to use the advertised capabiltiy to pick the most relevant message from the generic set if no specifics exist for the device or the client
Which was would you go?
Cheers

1 query with 4 ORs in the where clause and a case when to determine priority? It will depend on your conditions, but if you look at your explain plans you should get an idea for which is the better one; typically I would expect this to be the OR method...

• Multi-row sub query returns ORA-00904 :invalid identifier error

I am creating a report from two tables that I am not joining. I want a single line for every row in table1 that meets a date range. Table2 can contain none or many rows for each recored in table1. I want to get up to two fields from table2.
I was using a case statement to check if there was data and then an in-line query or subquery. Once again, the idea is to have a single line on the report for each table1 record.

Iceman,
Thanks for the reply I will try your suggestion.
I will try and explain why I think two subqueries (an in-line query with a subquery?) are required. I will use the creation of the column RTP #1 as the example as the RTP #2 column is only different in the rownum selected.
Looking only at the lines that fail, here is my analysis. (If I rem out the two case lines the query runs, I just don't get two columns of data I need.) I will only examine the first case as the second is changed to extract the second approval via the rownum = 2 criteria. The first statement checks there is at least one RTP approval stored for the request and then gets the user who approved the request if the test is true.
case when
(select count(appr_user) from crrm_cr_approvals where appr_cr_no =a.cr_mas_cr_no and appr_type = 'RTP') > 0
then
The above part works fine and the correct count of approvals is returned.
(select appr_user from (select * from crrm_cr_approvals where appr_cr_no=a.cr_mas_cr_no and appr_type = 'RTP') where rownum = 1)
end
"RTP #1",
I moved the parenthesis to the correct location. There can be multiple approvals for a given parent record. Some parent records need one, some need two approvals. If I replace
(select appr_user from (select * from crrm_cr_approvals where appr_cr_no =a.cr_mas_cr_no and appr_type = 'RTP') where rownum = 1)
with
(select appr_user from approvals where appr_cr_no =a.cr_mas_cr_no and appr_type = 'RTP' and rownum = 1)
The correct result is returned because it returns exactly one row as rownum=1 limits the query. When rownum = 2 then the query returns null as the rownum never gets to two as the rownum column is built via the set created by the second subquery.
The subquery builds a set of approvals for a specific "cr_no" and appr_type of "RTP". the outer query then looks at the rownum of the second query
Here is where I got the rownum information from;
http://www.oracle.com/technology/oramag/oracle/06-sep/o56asktom.html
So here is what I think is happening;
1. Main query From and Where are processed. This should provide the "set" for the query
2.The from subqueries for RTP #1 and RTP #2 should be able to access the a.cr_mas_cr_no field and build a set from the approvals table.
3.The RTP #1/2 subquery (inline maybe a better description?) would then get the correct row from the from subquery.
The error "invalid identifier" refers to the a.cr_mas_cr_no field. I assume it means it can not resolve the table alias inside the subquery.
So maybe your grouping would help, I will try.

Can any one give me clue ,how to find out which sub query returns more than one row in the following query .This is why smaller, simpler queries are easier to work with than huge ones - when something like this goes wrong smaller queries are much eaiser to debug. Ganesh is right - you will have to dissect the big query bit by bit until you find the offending subquery. If there is another way I would like to find out about it too.
The easiest way to do this is probably to use block comments to isolate parts of the query bit by bit until you find the offending part. If you carefully examine the subqueries you might be able to figure out which one is returning multiple rows without commenting everything
Good luck!

• XML attributes makes my query return no rows

Hello everyone,
I've an odd problem.
I'm querying some XML, but the attributes in one of the tags make my query return no rows; if I remove the attributes, then the query works as expected.
The XML is below; it's the attributes in the Report tag that cause the issues:
<result errorCode="0">
<return>
<Report
xsi:schemaLocation="Items_x0020_status_x0020_information http://******-****/ReportServer?%2FReports%2FContent%20Producer%20Reports%2FItems%20status%20information&rs%3AFormat=xml&rc%3ASchema=True"

</Details_Collection>
</Tablix1>

</return>
</result>My query is:

) a;I've tried stripping out the attributes in the tag, which does work, but some of the XML I'm expecting back may be quite large (many records), so that caused issues in itself. I'd rather deal with it and not mess with the XML itself if possible.
Any help would be hugely appreciated!
Thank you very much in advance.

• Spatial query returns no rows

I have an oracle table with spatial index with the following details:
( Oracle 9i 9.2.0.4 )
SRS : 8265
Data Extents : -77.129588,38.815658 to -76.879555,38.985733
The SDO_GEOM_METADATA has the following entry
DIMINFO :SDO_DIM_ARRAY(SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('X', -180, 180, .001111949), SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('Y',-90, 90, .001111949))
SRID :8265
I get no rows back with the following query
SELECT * FROM DCLANDMARKS WHERE
(MDSYS.SDO_RELATE(GEOLOC,
MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY(
2003, -- 2-dimensional polygon
8265,
NULL,
MDSYS.SDO_ELEM_INFO_ARRAY(1,1003,1), -- polygon with hole
MDSYS.SDO_ORDINATE_ARRAY(-91,-80, 91,-80, 91,80, -91,80,-91,-80)
),'QUERYTYPE=WINDOW MASK=ANYINTERACT') = 'TRUE')
However changing the ordinate array above to
MDSYS.SDO_ORDINATE_ARRAY(-90,-80, 90,-80, 90,80, -90,80,-90,-80)
Returns rows ? Seems like the extents for Y are being used for X ?
Any ideas ? - We have not been able to work around this one ???
Thanks

Hi,
Every geodetic (long/lat) polygon in Oracle must have area less than 1/2 the surface area of the earth. Both of your polygons as specified are illegal in spatial. The first one can be fixed changing the rotation of the ordinates in the ordinate array.
The second one is exactly 1/2 the surface area of the earth - you cannot code this polygon this way.
What you can do is change the geometry to a multipolygon, and break the geometry into two polygons, using it only with SDO_FILTER or SDO_RELATE with the anyinteract mask.
Hope this helps,
Dan

• Query doesn't return rows

Hi,
The following query returns no rows, while there is one row in the table:
SELECT *

TO_CHAR (dt_disburse, 'RRRRMMDD') date1

(SELECT amt_disburse amt2, TO_CHAR (dt_disburse, 'RRRRMMDD') date2
FROM (SELECT amt_disburse,

Using Kordirko's approach from this thread: {message:id=4412642}, you could do something like:
SQL> select * from pymt_tmp;
ID AMT_DISBURSE DT_DISBUR
0099999999 199 16-MAR-09
1 row selected.

Hi!
I've a doubt. If u finally picking all the values which matched with field schs_loc_shortcut_source and which is 'MP' - then why r u using multiple condition in the WITH part? So, in that case, u don't have to write that additional filtering of the following lines in the outer query -
Where schs_loc_shortcut_source = 'MP';Regards.

Hi,
Its very difficult to analyse the query without any data being provided. So I suggest you to debug the above query by keeping basic join condition intact and comment out all the other where conditions for initial run.
FROM pa_request pr, pa_transaction_request ptr, org_unit ou
WHERE ptr.pa_trnsctn_rqst_sid = pr.pa_trnsctn_rqst_sid

--AND (pr.status_cid = 86 OR pr.status_cid IN
(20, 70, 30, 80, 25, 101, 96)
--AND pr.pa_rqst_sid = 75006271If if you have given join conditions proper and if data exists ,you can see set of rows displayed.
Next step is to keep on uncommenting each of the where condition
AND pr.oprtnl_flag = 'A'Like this you 'll come to the condition which does not match your requirement
Hope this helps

• SQL Query returning no rows, please help!!

I have a table that contains user audits for a particular procedures alongwith the date stamp. Now, I want to list all the procedures not accessed by the users within the last 6 months. Or, all the procedures that have not been used/accessed during the last 6 months.
This is what I am trying but is not returning any rows:
SELECT DISTINCT proc_name,
TRUNC (entry_date)
FROM log_web
WHERE proc_name NOT IN (SELECT proc_name
FROM log_web
WHERE TRUNC (entry_date) > TRUNC (SYSDATE - 180))
ORDER BY 2 DESC
Please advise.
Thank you in advance.

Two possibilities leap to mind.
First, are you sure that there are any prodcedures not accessed in the last six months?
Second, is there a chance that there could be records with a null value in proc_name? If the sub-query used in a NOT IN predicate returns even one null value, the query will return no rows.
Does this return rows?
SELECT DISTINCT proc_name, TRUNC(entry_date)
FROM log_web
WHERE proc_name NOT IN (SELECT proc_name
FROM log_web
WHERE TRUNC (entry_date) > TRUNC (SYSDATE - 180) and
proc_name IS NOT NULL)
ORDER BY 2 DESCJohn

• SQL query returns few rows, but holds on with several Gbs of RAM memory used

If I perform the following query:
SELECT d.DocumentGUID, d.DocumentID
FROM ImportDataBase.dbo.Document d
LEFT OUTER JOIN ContentDataBase.dbo.Document d2 ON (d.DocumentGUID = d2.DocumentGUID)
WHERE ( d2.DocumentGUID IS NULL ) -- new document in the ImportDB
OR ( d2.DocumentGUID IS NOT NULL AND d.QueryContent <> d2.QueryContent ) -- modified document in the ImportDB
It returns around 1000 rows and takes about 3 minutes to complete
It also raises up the RAM memory used from 2GB to 9GBs.
This memory used will remain used untill I restart the server. I have no need to make use of that memory, I already copied the returned rows of that query into a note pad for example. And any other reason of SQL has to to keep that memory stored by
that query, I dont want it.
Is there a way to release that memory I really dont need my SQL server to keep, without having to restart the SQL server?
and without topping the max memory the sql server uses, since I need my SQL server to use as much as it needs in other tasks(I dont think it needs to hold on to the above query memory used)
Thank You very much.

Is there a way to release that memory I really dont need my SQL server to keep, without having to restart the SQL server?
and without topping the max memory the sql server uses, since I need my SQL server to use as much
A query can be resource intensive even if it returns a single row. Generally it is a good idea to set SQL Server MAX memory.
BOL: "Optimizing Server Performance Using Memory Configuration Options
The memory manager component of Microsoft SQL Server eliminates the need for manual management of the memory available to SQL Server. When SQL Server starts, it dynamically determines how much memory to allocate based on how much memory the operating system
and other applications are currently using. As the load on the computer and SQL Server changes, so does the memory allocated. For more information, see Memory Architecture.
The following server configuration options can be used to configure memory usage and affect server performance:
•min server memory
•max server memory
•max worker threads
•index create memory
•min memory per query
The min server memory server configuration option can be used to ensure that SQL Server does not release memory below the configured minimum server memory once that threshold is reached. This configuration option can be set to a specific value based on the
size and activity of your SQL Server. If you choose to set this value, set it to some reasonable value to ensure that the operating system does not request too much memory from SQL Server, which can affect SQL Server performance.
The max server memory server configuration option can be used to specify the maximum amount of memory SQL Server can allocate when it starts and while it runs. This configuration option can be set to a specific value if you know there are multiple applications
running at the same time as SQL Server and you want to guarantee that these applications have sufficient memory to run. If these other applications, such as Web or e-mail servers, request memory only as needed, then do not set the max server memory server
configuration option, because SQL Server releases memory to them as needed. However, applications often use whatever memory is available when they start and do not request more if needed. If an application that behaves in this manner runs on the same computer
at the same time as SQL Server, set the max server memory server configuration option to a value that guarantees that the memory required by the application is not allocated by SQL Server."

• Single Sub Row Query Returns More Than 1 Row!

I am trying to update values in a table from another table and getting the error: Single Sub Row Query Returns More Than 1 Row.
I want table B's PRV_NAME updated into table A's PRV_NAME where A.PRVID = B.PRVID where B.PRV_TYPE = M'
Both tables have all unique PRVID's, however, table B has PRVID's that have the same name. So table B data can look like this:
PRVID PRV_NAME
1234 PHOENIX MED
1235 SAC MED
1236 SAC MED
1237 OVERLAND
etc..
So, as you can see the PRVID's are unique, but not the PRV_NAME's. Is this the reason why I get this error?
I did not build the tables and have no control over what is put in them. If this is the reason for the error, is there any way to resolve this?
For reference, here is the query. Maybe there is something wrong with this?

If not, post a little sample data (CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements, relevant columns only) for all the tables involved, and the results you want from that data.
In the case of a DML operation (such as UPDATE) the sample data should show what the tables are like before the DML, and the results will be the contents of the changed table(s) after the DML.
Explain, using specific examples, how you get those results from that data.
Always say what version of Oracle you're using (e.g. 11.2.0.2.0).

I see you've posted your code now:
update msb_prv_source ps
set ps.prv_name =
(select prv00.prv00_prv_name
from prv00_prv prv00
join msb_prv_source ps
on prv00.prv00_prv_id = ps.prvid
where prv00.prv00_prv_type = 'M')Even if ps.prvid is unique, the sub-query can return more than 1 row if prv00.prv00_prv_id is not unique. When that that's the case, what do you want to happen? Include examples when you post the sample data and desired results.
