Missing Control File question

I run the database in archivelog mode. I take online back-ups and occasional full backups.
I take a full cold backup on day1 and on day 5 i take a hot backup including the control file.
After this i create a couple of tablespaces, and usual work but don't take backup.
On day 10 I lose my control files. Lets say all of them.
Can i restore my d/b as it was on day 10? If yes, how?
TIA
Naveen

Hi..
AFAIK, there is no such level of logging in the alert log.From Oracle documents:-
Each database also has an alert.log. The alert log of a database is a chronological log of messages and errors, including the following:* All internal errors (ORA-600), block corruption errors (ORA-1578), and deadlock errors (ORA-60) that occu.r
Administrative operations, such as the SQL statements CREATE/ALTER/DROP DATABASE/TABLESPACE and the Enterprise Manager or SQLPlus statements STARTUP, SHUTDOWN, ARCHIVE LOG, and RECOVER.
*Several messages and errors relating to the functions of shared server and dispatcher processes.
* Errors during the automatic refresh of a materialized view.

  • Flat File and Control Files Questions

    Greetings,
    I've worked with Oracle for about 10 years, but have little experience with using sql-loader.
    I have data from Visual FoxPro tables going into Oracle 10g via a Perl script. I am having issues and therefore have a couple questions.
    1) If the data from my foxpro table is basically everything in the table as in 'Select * from table-name', does the control file have to list every column that is in the FoxPro table?
    -- I have a case where a FoxPro table has 15 columns but we are trying to upload only 10 columns. The script is dynamic. It selects * from each FoxPro table and creates a Flat File for each on the fly. Then sql-loader uploads the data to Oracle. The Flat File for this one table has data from all 15 columns, but the Control File only lists 10 of the columns to be uploaded into Oracle.
    2) Do the column names in the control file 'have' to match both the column names in the FoxPro table and the Oracle table, or only the Oracle table?

    Yes - use the FILLER spec to ignore columns you do not care about - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14215/ldr_field_list.htm#sthref946

  • Sql loader control file question.

    I have a text file (t.txt) which contains a record types AAA and AAB to input fixed width data into a table (t) AAA_NO, AAA_TYPE, AAB_DESC.
    Control file (control_t) contents:
    load data infile '/path/t.txt'
    insert into table t
    when ((1:3) = 'AAA' )
    AAA_NO position (4:14) CHAR,
    AAA_TYPE postion (15:27) CHAR
    Works prefectly, but I need to add another set of data from the same t.txt file with record type AAB. I attempted to add this into the same control file:
    into table t
    when (1:3) = 'AAB'
    AAB_DESC position (28:128) CHAR
    It fails naturally. How would I include the addtional record type data into the same table after AAA_NO and AAA_TYPE have already been inserted? Do I need to include the AAA_NO in the second insert (AAB_DESC)? Should I create another temp table to store only the AAA_NO and AAB_DESC and then insert that data into table t after the loader is done? Or can this be completed in the same control file?

    Thanks again for the assistance, this is a tough one to fix. I am new to sqlloader.
    The temp table creation is causing some serious errors, so I am back to trying to fix sqlloader to get the job done. the apt.txt file contains records that each row of a new record starts with either 'APT' or 'ATT'. Here is the details of what I am trying to do.
    crtl file:
    load data
    infile '/path/apt.txt
    insert
    into table t_hld
    when ((1:3) = 'APT')
    apt_no position (4:14) CHAR,
    apt_type position (15:27) CHAR,
    apt_id position (28:31) CHAR
    The next section is the problem where I am inserting apt_sked into the same table t_hld as above because it has a different record qualifier its ATT and not APT.
    insert
    into table t_hld
    when (1:3) = 'ATT'
    apt_no position (4:14) CHAR,
    apt_sked position (16:126) CHAR
    The positions of the data using fixed is working, I can insert the apt_sked data into another temp table instead of t_hld and it works. It's just when I attempt to place the ATT apt_sked data into the t_hld table after the APT data has been loaded into the t_hld table....I tried APPEND instead of INSERT, but that does not work.
    The APT_NO's of the data are all the same- it is the qualifier for the records (Primary Key attribute- however I do not have it established since it is a temp table concept).
    I am stuck trying to get the data in the t_hld table, everything works when I do not try to put the ATT apt_sked data into t_hld- everything is valid. And placing the ATT apt_sked data into a different temp table works perfectly- but I can't find a way to create an update to t_hld from this temp table without errors. So I am trying to go back to sqlloader to get this done- any thoughts or questions?
    Thanks a billion!

  • SQL LOADER LPAD CONTROL FILE QUESTION

    Hi, inthe flat file
    company_cd is "1" or "01"
    and center_cd is 3 digits... ex: "493"
    in the table the userid coulmn should be 6 digits
    currently i am getting this as userid in the table
    "010493" is right, because company_cd is "01"
    "10493" is not right, because company_cd is "1"
    if company_cd is 2 digits(01) i am getting 6 digits userid which is OK
    but when company_cd is singile digit(1) i am getting 5 digits userid
    I NEED TO LPAD with 0 in the front when company_cd is "1"any suggetions ???????
    ***********This is the code i am using currently in the CTL file for userid**********
    ,USERID "CONCAT(substr(trim(:company_cd),1,2),lpad(trim(:center_cd),4,0))"

  • How to use old archieve logs with a new control file

    Environment:
    ORACLE_BASE="/export/home/oracle"
    ORACLE_HOME="/export/home/oracle/product/8.1.6"
    NLS_LANG=".UTF8"
    2 partitions:
    i) /data1 -- contains important datafiles (OS striping on 3 hard
    disks)
    ii) /export/home -- contains the oracle program, and SYS/SYSTEM
    datafiles
    Problem:
    -/data1 cannot be read/mount (damaged)
    -oracle failed
    Action Performed:
    -reinstalled OS
    -mount /export/home successfully (all oracle system files,
    instance init files exist)
    -/data1 is an empty partition
    -created the oracle user, and its groups
    -chown recusively for the $ORACLE_BASE directory
    -set all the oracle environment variables
    -attempted to start the instance, but failed due to a control
    file was
    missing
    -since control files were set to be mirrored, i copied a control
    file somewhere
    from /export/home/oracle/oradata/<SID>/control1.ctl to
    /data1/oracle/oradata/<SID>/control2.ctl (i.e. have them back to
    their original locations)
    -the instance failed to start as well, since the datafile set in
    the control files couldn't be found
    -this forced me to re-create the control file... b4 i re-create
    a new control file, i backed up the old one
    -once the control file was created, the database can be started,
    but, to oracle, all achieve log information are lost (although
    the achieve log's physical files r still there)
    -i imported the important data from a dump file that was
    exported a week ago b4 the system failure
    -since we r using the new control file, the redo logs switch
    contains no achieve log information that the old control file
    has, so running "recover database" doesn't do anything
    Purpose:
    since the dump file is a week old, i'd like to get the data
    after my last export and b4 the system failure. the database was
    run in arhieve log mode, how can i recover those data with the
    new control file
    Question:
    -how can we create a new control file that can drive the old
    achieve logs?
    -can we convert the achieve log data (.dbf format) into text
    format?
    -can we still use the old control files to start the database?
    -what's a suggested solution if we'd like to re-construct the
    database up to the moment b4 the system failure in another
    server?

    We are running Oracle 9i on Windows XP. We are upgrading soon to Oracle 11g on a newer platform, but need to get our development environment working first.
    We lost a system that was running our development database without having a database export. The C drive was placed into a new system as the D drive.
    I have loaded Oracle 9i on the C drive, but I have been unable to determine how to point it to the existing data files on the D drive. My search skills may be the limiting factor here...
    We cannot simply load the drive as C, since the hardware is different.
    What are the steps to point the new database software at the data files on the D drive? Or, how do I copy the old data files into the new Oracle Home and have them recognized properly?
    Are you stating that you don't know how to use COPY command?
    Can you recreate same directory structure on new C drive as exist on old C drive?
    Can you then drag & drop copies of the files?

  • Restore - filename for datafile is missing in the control file

    I am practicing RMAN recovery procedures and I encountered a problem that I do not know how to solve.
    1) I took a hot backup of my test database.
    2) Create tablespace TS_DATA_TEMP
    3) Deleted tablespace TS_DATA which had 2 datafiles
    4) Created tablespace TS_DATA with 1 datafile
    5) shutdown database
    6) logged into RMAN in nomount
    7) restore controlfile from autobackup;
    8) alter database mount;
    9) restore database;

    Suggestions on what's wrong with the control file?

    I found my mistake; a newbie error.
    I did not know I needed to include in my restore command the 'until' option when doing incomplete recovery. I only included the 'until' option in the recover command:
    original command
    restore database;
    recover database until sequence =123;
    should be
    restore database until sequence = 123;
    recover database until sequence =123;
    I usually run the command using a RUN block with a SET UNTIL SEQUENCE but this case I used the single commands separately.
    RUN
    +{+
    SET UNTIL sequence 123;
    RESTORE DATABASE;
    RECOVER DATABASE;
    +}+

  • A question about restoring from cold backup(control file backup not clear)

    Hi,
    I had another question about restoring the cold backup. My database is in noarchivelog mode and after taking a consistent cold backup, all I need to do is to restore the backup right? -Why I got this question is because: when I backup my control file to trace, I see statements like this:-----
    -- Commands to re-create incarnation table
    -- Below log names MUST be changed to existing filenames on
    -- disk. Any one log file from each branch can be used to
    -- re-create incarnation records.
    -- ALTER DATABASE REGISTER LOGFILE '/uo1/app1/arch1_1_647102958.dbf';
    -- Recovery is required if any of the datafiles are restored backups,
    -- or if the last shutdown was not normal or immediate.
    RECOVER DATABASE
    -- Database can now be opened normally.
    ALTER DATABASE OPEN;
    My database is in noarchivelog mode now so don't know why these statements (of register the logfile) is there in the backup of control file? so when I restore the cold backup of this database, it will still work correct? (there is no logfile I have only CRD files in cold backup -no archive log files.)
    thanks

    Thanks for your inputs! It is most useful to me.

    Hello,
    i hv go through the doc. as well. But have some doubts what will happen in each on these situations.
    Pls help me to clarify these!
    Scenario is like this;
    hv 3 redo log files - multiplxed
    hv 3 control files - multiplxed
    - What will happen if 1 redo log file missing when starting the DB?
    - What will happen if 1 redo log file missing when using(performing operations) the DB?
    (will it recover automatically/db abort/even redo log lost will the DB run as usual... ?)
    -How to recover this lost redo log?
    - What will happen if 1 control file missing when starting the DB?
    - What will happen if 1 control file missing when using(performing operations) the DB?
    (will it recover automatically/db abort/even control file lost will the DB run as usual... ?)
    -How to recover this lost redo log?
    thanks

    - What will happen if 1 redo log file missing when starting the DB?IF you have multiplexed the members you can drop the lost file and will be able to open the DB
    What will happen if 1 redo log file missing when using(performing operations) the DB?Again if multiplexed it will drop a warinign in the alert log and contnue to write on othere members

Thats the solution and hope its clear... you can go through following steps :
    SQL> select tablespace_name, file_name from dba_temp_files;
    SQL> drop tablespace temp02 including contents and datafiles;
    SQL> create temporary tablespace temp02 tempfile ''X:\ORACLE\ORADATA\PROD\temp02.tmp' size 16383M;
    SQL> alter database default temporary tablespace TEMP02;
    SQL> drop tablespace temp01 including contents and datafiles;

    SQL> alter database default temporary tablespace TEMP01;

  • Checkpointing - control file contents question

    Some clarification is needed if possible...
    When you commit a transaction:
    - commit scn is recorded in the itl of the data block and undo segment header
    - lgwr records the committed scn (for all data blocks involved) to the redo log
    Checkpoint Event
    - (3 seconds or possibly less passes by) CKPT wakes up and signals DBWn to write dirty (modified and committed)
    blocks to disk
    - CKPT records the scn of those blocks in the control file (data file and redo thread sections) and the data file
    header (task of checkpoint when a log switch occurs)
    - Checkpoint position in the Redo Log is forwarded
    Control file contents question:
    When LGWR writes the commit scn to the redo log, who writes the scn to the control file? LGWR or CKPT?
    Also, when is the redo thread scn written?
    Matt

    Matt,
    This is my understanding of the stuff. Feel free to correct me.
    Checkpoint SCN , as I mentioned in my last reply is the marker of the point till which the data is "chekpointed" to the datafiles. This marker tells the controlfile that in the case of the crash, where to start recovery of the datafile and have to go which extent in the redo stream? This is only available in the datafile header and in the controlfile. This doesn't get recorded in the redo log file/stream.
    I mentioned checkpoint queue in my reply too. Though I couldn't find any reference directly mentioned between this and in the checkpoint SCN but I believe my theory , if not totall, partially is correct. The incremental checkpoint is the stuff which makes the decision that how many redo blocks needs to be applied to the datafile if its closed without a proper checkpoint. So this part is maintained in the Datafile header itself in the form of the checkpoint SCN. When not matched with the conrolfile checkpoint SCN, which is always higher than this, a recovery is reported.
    I hope its somewhat correct. Do let me know your views too.
    Cheers
    Aman....

    Did you multiplex the control file ? May be you have multiplexed on another file system with names like control02.ctl, control03.ctl... etc. If yes, just make a copy of control02.ctl and put in the location of control01.ctl. Also rename the copy of control02.ctl to control01.ctl and try to restart the database.
    If only one control file was there, then you have to re-create the controlfile. Please go through the following docs.
    http://www.stanford.edu/dept/itss/docs/oracle/10g/server.101/b10759/statements_5003.htm
    Also before doing anything, please take the backup of your database (ofcourse in this case it will be cold backup).

  • Some question about control file

    Hello,
    ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE
    - in my case I have three control files. The above command will generate the SQL
    command for regeneration of all three control files?
    - is there any way to find in which trace file the SQL script will be written. In my user (udump) and database (bddump) dump directory are many trace files and it is hard to find it. Also it is safe to delete all this trace files?
    - RMAN is kepping all it's data ( required for recovery) in control file.
    By using the above command I didn't find nothing about those data ( in the trace file ) or maybe I skip it.
    Windows 2000, Oracle 9i
    Thank you!

    Hi,
    To get the file, use this select in the session where you executed the backup to trace:SELECT
         'The file you search is: ' ||
         DIR.VALUE || DECODE(SUBSTR(DIR.VALUE,1,1),'/','/','\') || '*' || SPID.VALUE || '*' "Info"
    FROM
         (SELECT VALUE
          FROM V$PARAMETER
          WHERE NAME='user_dump_dest'
         ) DIR,
         (SELECT SPID VALUE
          FROM V$PROCESS
          WHERE ADDR=(SELECT PADDR
                    FROM V$SESSION
                    WHERE SID=(SELECT DISTINCT SID
                         FROM V$MYSTAT)
         ) SPID;You can cat/type this file directly. The file name returned uses wildcards (*) purposely.
    I read something about RECOVERY CATALOG and found that it can be created on same database or in a different database:Yes.
    If it's created in same database and this is lost, RECOVERY CATALOG will not be lost too ?Yes, it will. That's why we create the RECOVERY CATALOG in a dedicated database (for example the one in which EM Grid Control / OMS has it's repository.
    - If it's created in a different database, do I need a RECOVERY CATALOG for this database too? Well, you can do like that. I don't do it though. My RMAN's RECOVERY CATALOG database is backed up online via standard archivelog method (with my dynamic backup script), not using RMAN.
    Regards,
    Yoann.

  • Question about control files.

    Hi.
    For example, I have 1 control file on storage A and 1 on storage B. Storage B placed offline for some reasons. Will control file recover automatically when storage B be taken online or it has to be repaired manually?
    Thanks.

    Will control file recover automaticallNo ... it can be recovered manually . Either you have to create another controlfile or you to move the controlfile location on other online storage ( using multiplexing ) ...

  • Creating a Control File

    I have a question about creating another control file. If I want to create another control file, do I need to put the values/paths of the current control files in the CREATE CONTROLFILE statement?

    996403 wrote:
    If I am wanting to create a new control file, do you recommend:
    1. Use the Create Control file statementWhen to Create New Control Files:
    All control files for the database have been permanently damaged/missing and you do not have a control file backup.
    You want to change one of the permanent database parameter settings originally specified in the CREATE DATABASE statement.
    These settings include the database name and the following parameters: MAXLOGFILES, MAXLOGMEMBERS, MAXLOGHISTORY, MAXDATAFILES, and MAXINSTANCES.
    For example, you would change a database name if it conflicted with another database name in a distributed environment,
    or you would change the value of MAXLOGFILES if the original setting is too low.
    2. Copy an existing control file and then edit the parameter file?i will recommend 2nd (if you have healthy control file) if you want multiplex control files.

  • Format of email body in bursting control file

    Hi,
    I am hoping this is a simple question for someone that is not as new as I am to bursting...
    What is the new line character I should be using to format the outgoing email body within the bursting control file.
    At present, the entire email body appears as one paragraph regardless of whether I have included new lines or not. I am no doubt missing something simple given that it is 5.20pm on a Friday.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Wes
