Missing files when copying over network

I've had a good search for people with similar problems on Discussions, and there are a few mentions of similar occurences. Here's my summary though.
I have 2 Macs, and frequently transfer files from one to the other by sharing drives and using the Finder.
However, quite often, when transferring lots of files, they are sucessfully copied but do not show in Finder on the receiving machine. The files are there (using Terminal to explore the directory reveals the files in question), but Finder just doesn't acknowledge any existence of the "missing" files.
This problem can usually be cured by creating a new folder in one of the affected folders - this somehow kicks Finder into refreshing the folder's contents.
Removing the .DS_Store file(s) (again, via Terminal) in the copied folder also resolves this issue, leading me to believe that the problem lies with the .DS_Store files.
I cannot believe I am not the only user who frequently finds themselves having to do uneccesary Terminal work to reveal files which appear to be missing after copy over the network.
Is Apple aware of this problem? Does anyone else have any workarounds?

I don't think I have experienced that exact problem however, I am such a Unix geek, I typically do my in-network transfers between Mac machines using SCP at the shell prompt in Terminal.
Finder refresh on the other hand I have experienced before although I cannot provide a situation or example.
Usually if it needs a refresh, I believe all I ever do is navigate away from the folder, then back to it. Or if it is the Desktop in question, using Exposé to show it, a single click on an empty space there will make the newly copied items appear.

  • Problem when copying over the Oracle Lite DB Files...

    Hi All,
i have installed oracle Lite 10g on my desktop and created a Database and then created a user on it.
when i created all of that, it created two files: one which is a .odb (datbase file) and .opw (password file).
the opw files has encrypted info about the user that i created on the DB.
i am trying to port my entire application on to a laptop.
so i install oracle lite 10g on it and then copy over these Datafiles (.odb) and password (.opw) file.
i make the neccesary entries in the ODBC.ini file.
now when i try to msql into the database it gives me an POL-5150 Access Violation error.
any clue as to why it does not let me login.
I Tried logging in both as the system user and the user that i created on the DB.
    any help would be great.
i can login into the DB on my Desktop with the same username/password. no issues there. the issue is when i copy those files on the laptop.
    thanks,
    Milind

Make shure that this file is in a folder that is in your path.
to check this check your path (form cmd prompt typ set path) en search your hard disk for occurences of olod2040.dll.
On my desktop the file is in C:\oracle\olite\Mobile\Sdk\BIN, this folder is also part of my path.
normaly the file can also be found in C:\mobileclient\bin or whereever you installed the mobile client. I once noticed that deinstalling the sdk gave me the same error, the path was not set correctly when deinstalling.

  • Missing Photo Files When Copied to a  Server

I am new to Keynote and I'm having problems moving a file from my desktop to a server at work. There are about six photos that won't appear when I open the Keynote file off the server. In their place are boxes with a big x and a question mark. I noticed that all the missing files are not in the package contents and their file names start with the letter R or S. All the files in the package begin with letters A through P. I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not, I just thought it was an odd coincidence. I just want to figure out how to include my missing files in the package contents.

It was a problem with the server. When I saved the file to an external hard drive everything worked fine.

  • Faster copy over network? [Solved] Use Linux!

I'm wondering if there is a different way to copy files over a network that would be faster.
I'm running an updated version of ArchLinux, no gui, just command line.
I have samba working to see windows shares and have mounted a share.
I use "cp" to copy a file from the win98 share to my local harddrive.  The file is about 670 megs. Every thing works great.
It takes 5 min 40 seconds to copy.
When I copy the same file using "copy" from a win98 computer it's done in just under 4 min.
    Any suggestions?
    smbmount //comp_lab_server/admin /mnt/winshare
    cp /mnt/winshare/images/admin.zip /mnt/localdrive/admin.zip

jerem wrote:If I correctly understood what you exactly did, I would **guess** that :
Yes, not real clear, I wrote this real fast before running out the door...
    jerem wrote:
    * using cp : the copy uses the smbfs module in the kernel to retrieve the file from the win98 server.
    * using copy : well, linux running samba is known to be generally faster than native windows services...
generally faster... that's what I was looking for, but it just seams quite a bit slower
    jerem wrote:
The two methods have different results because the copy goes through different processes, different layers, on different systems.
Using smbfs apparently involves some overhead(given your figures).
ok, that helps, I was just making sure I wasn't missing some other great tool that was known to copy files faster.
jerem wrote:Disks could also have different I/O speeds...
nope, same computers (dual booting), same disks..

  • Finder freeze while copying over network

i have two mac on a network at home, both are now with 10.4.11 - but ever since i updated to this system version i am having a problem with the laptop. whenever i copy a file over the network from the desktop to the laptop, the laptop's finder freezes for the duration of the transfer - i can't open other apps, can't access anything else. the status bar of the copy doesn't change. if another app is open before the copy starts, it works fine. mouse works fine.
i can't figure out why this is happening... any clues?

Same problem here, I think: Finder hangs (beachball & Not Resopnding in activity Monitor) during file copy then comes back when copy finishes. Hang starts when I click in the finder to view another directory on the remote machine. When copy is done on PowerBook via Airport, Finder hangs. 100 Mb/s ethernet stutters but does not hang up, but 10Mb/s hangs up.
Same issue on this thread in Feb: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6299419&#6299419
Some things I've tried to no avail:
    Fixed Permissions.
    New user does the same.
    Reinstall 10.4.11.
Etehrnet 100Mb/s - No freeze, but finder still jerky.
Ethernet 10Mb/s and Airport 802.11g hang.
Other mac, wireless to laptop - ok.
Used file appleairports2.kext from 10.4.9, no help.
    Deleted Finder.plist, no help.
    Re-reinstall 10.4.11
Tried airport with no security settings
    Trashed recent servers file.
When airport is faster, finder works slightly better, clearing freeze occasionally.
Activity monitor Finder not responding, sampling does not clear freeze.
I think it is interesting that Finder does better with higher data transfer rates. In fact, the problem is evident on an ethernet connection when I slow it down to 10 Mb/s, OK at 100. So it may be purely a Finder problem.
What I have not tried is going back to 10.4.9 nor a clean install of 10.4.11.
Has anyone figured this one out yet?
Thanks to UltraSoul for clear postings on this.

  • Yosemite Files to Copy Over After Clean Install

I've done clean installs in the past and transferred my flies over manually using Time Machine. I haven't done one since Mountain Lion I think and I know the file locations have changed a bit in Yosemite. The three main programs I'm concerned about are iTunes, Mail and iPhoto. In the past I've copied over the iTunes Library folder, Mail folder and iPhoto Library folder over and then replaced the plist in the Preference Folder. These include, com.apple.iTunes.plist, com.apple.iPhoto.plist and com.apple.mail.plist. This has always copied over the data and settings. I'm curious if this still hods true with Yosemite as it did with Mountain Lion and I want to know where these files are kept if so.
I can't seem to find any information on this or any guides. Any information would help.
    Thanks

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences.

  • Work is lost after illustrator freezes and then crashes when copying over to photoshop

work is lost after illustrator freezes and then crashes when copying items over to photoshop, then when re-opening the illustrator file it gets to the end of reading the file to open then quits again? this keeps happening!

    afrill,
It seems that you file has become corrupted.
One thing often tried first is to create a new document and File>Place the corrupted one to see how much may be rescued that way.
Here is a website where you can see whether it can rescue the file, and if it can, you may pay for a subscription to have it done,
    http://www.recoverytoolbox.com/buy_illustrator.html
    and another similar website,

  • Missing file when I try package my project in Project Manager.

I get the following message when trying to package my project in Project Manager: "the following file could not be found during the project manager operation:". The file is there, and no problems with it. I know this has been mentioned on the forums before. But no sufficient answer has been given.
I need this to be packaged with all files copied over.
Any resolve? I have seen one post saying that it is an issue with ProRes format.

MacKeeper is known to interfere with the Share menu.  Do you have it installed by any chance?
If yes see https://discussions.apple.com/message/24066271#24066271 for solution.

  • Getting an error message about a missing file when I try to open Firefox

When I tried to open Firefox today I received a message about a missing file (Wrusr.ddl) and that Firefox was not able to open. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it did not work. I have no idea what that file is or where is went. I used Firefox 2 days ago and it was working fine. The only thing that changed between then and today was that I renewed my antivirus software but I definitely did not delete any files and I made sure that Firefox is allowed to access the internet. I've been using that same software (Webroot) with Firefox for years and never had any issues before today. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have included a screenshot of the error message below.

hello angelag.132, the WRusr.dll file is part of Webroot SecureAnywhere - try to reinstall or uninstall that software.

  • Why does my ibook HD show a different name when accessing over network?

I am including the details below for some industrious soul to peruse. In a nutshell, I have renamed my old computers internal drive (no problem), but when I connect to it via network from my new computer it still comes up as the old HD name instead of the new name that I gave it.
Is this normal to have the name of the HD sitting on the desktop not be the same as the name seen when connecting over my LAN? Or am I seeing the beginnings of trouble? Permission repairs don't come up with anything, nor does Disk Utility.
Thanks for the advise, and here's the details:
After buying a new iMac, I decided to rename my ibook's drive from Macintosh HD to iBook HD-- so I wouldn't confuse myself when networkign the two together. Seems I have confused the computers, however. After renaming my ibook HD, when I connect to it over my network I see the following under My Network:
    TBB iBook G4
    TBB-ibook-G4
Thomas Bailey 2's iBook G4 (apparently this comes from an administrator account I temporarily created and then later deleted)
When I click on the first computer name, I get the Connect to Server dialog Box, where I put in my main admin user login info. I then get a shoice of volumes to mount, which shows my admin user name and the old name of the hard drive (Macintosh HD).

    Hi Thomas!
Is your iBook hard drive possibly the same name as one of your account names?

  • Does OS X corrupt files when copying from SD card to desktop?

Using finder to copy a folder and its files from SD card to mac desktop seems to cause *some* files to be corrupted, specifically a handful of MP4 files from a FAT32 SD card  which was used in a digital camera. Using a binary/hex comparison tool reveals that some segments of the files contents were modified when copied from the SD card.
This error occurs when copying multiple files using Finder windows.  However, when copying the same files one at a time, the corruption does not occur.  This appears to be an OS level bug.  In reviewing past content, I found that dozens of MP4 files have been corrupted in the past 4 months by merely copying the files from the SD card to mac desktop using Finder copy/paste.
I am using OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.3

Well, like I said, the byte size in fact did *not* change.  So I'm not even concerned about that.  What *did* change is the content of those bytes and it doesn't matter what operating system you are using, the content of those bytes is *not* supposed to change.
Also, like I said before, if I copy the individual file (MP4) insead of the entire folder, and then do the binary/hex comparison, the byte data is identical. i.e.
    a) copying one file at a time produces an *identical* file on the HD, i.e. the byte count AND the byte content are precisely the same.
    b) copying a folder with multiple files produces a *different* file on the HD, i.e. the byte count is the same BUT the byte content differs from the original file.

  • Missing contacts when copying from SIM

I have all my contacts stored on my SIM from my old RAZR. When I tried to transfer the contacts using the iPhone Settings->Mail-->Import, only some of my contacts get copied over. Has anyone else had this issue? Help!

Not a lot of Blackberry related discussions here so you might not get the answer you're looking for as the software is not owned/supported by Apple.

  • Missing File when trying to Burn to DVD

I am trying to urn my current project to DVD, and I keep getting an error as soon as I do that says: Missing File. It then specifies the path name which is something in my iphoto folder? Has anyone seen this before? I deleted my project and started over from scratch but it did the same thing the second time around.

It seems to me that you either have not opened the project in iMovie or are unable to for some reason. It's also pretty obvious that iDVD at least thinks that an element from iPhoto is missing.
I would suggest this. Take an obvious picture that does not belong in the movie. Open iDVD and in the error window, navigate to the replacement picture (you can select the file). Do a Save-as so your original project is unchanged. Using preview in iDVD, look for the error, then you can find a suitable picture to substititute. Then repeat the process with a desirable picture in place. clik on the picture and again save as so not to modify the original.
    Good luck!
