Missing Font Warning in Pages

I transferred a Word file from a PC and when I open it in Pages I get a Missing Font Warning. How can I find where the words or characters that use that missing font are, so I can change the font.
Is there a way I can search for or highlight any words or characters that use a particular font?
Or is there a way I can highlight all of the other known good fonts I am using so that I can isolate the words or characters with the missing font?
Also, can I find out what font has been substituted for the missing font?
I want to be able to replace the "missing font" with one of the two good fonts I am using in the rest of the document.

If I remember well, the warning tell us the name of the replaced fonts.
So we may use the script which is available on my iDisk since 6 juin 2008 to replace the missing fonts by the ones we want to use. It was written to respond to a clone of your question.

  • Missing Fonts on a pages document

I just opened a Pages document that I have opened many times before and it said error occured - aril Mt and and another arial MT bold of some sort font is missing.
I have never goofed with any fonts errors since I went to Macs maybe 6 years ago. It says to add it to your folder or just ccancel or continue.
how do i add it? where do i get it from and what folder do I insert in into when i find these 2 fonts?
    Why did this happen?
    I am stumped.
This is on a powerbook 12". I have not been able to check my macbook pro yet.
    thank you.

I tried to summarize previous comments on this subject and ended up with this:
Pages can be very picky about fonts, even fonts you do not visibly use in a document. It is for example possible that a Style you do not use contains a font that is missing. It may also be part of a bullet list.
    * Use Applications > Font Book to make sure you really have all the fonts that Pages complain about. If you do not, get them.
    * If you think the missing fonts may come from MS Office you can go to Mactopia to download a test drive, which will install the fonts.
    * If you think the missing fonts come from Pages, reinstall Pages.
    * In Font Book, highlight the fonts Pages complains about, and go to File Validate, to make sure they are ok. Make sure there are no duplicates active.
    * In the Finder, highlight the files of the fonts that Pages complains about. Drag them from the Fonts folder to the desktop and then back again to the Fonts folder.
    * You can also try Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > Repair Permissions. (To be honest, I do not think I have ever heard of this actually fixing any problem, but it is theoretically possible.)
    * Some people have reported solving the problem by "cleaning" the document saving it to another format. Try for example saving your Pages 2.0 document as Pages 1.0 and then reopen it. Warning! You may loose formatting here, so keep the original as back up.
    * Restart.

  • Muse "Missing fonts" warning?

Hi, does anyone know if there is a "Missing Fonts" warning in Muse or some way to check if all the correct fonts are loaded when opening a file?
Like the InDesign and Illustrator warning (see pic).
    Thanks!

It could be in overset text (though preflight should see that) or in a style not currently in use. Are you sure the priflight profile is looking for missing fonts, bucasue is really does sound like there is substitution ocurring. Also, have you looked in Type > Find Font.
If none of that is fruitful, I'd try exporting each of the documents to .inx or .idml, then opening those and saving as new .indd docs. Add the new docs to a new book and see if you still get errors.

  • Missing font warning in Illustrator

    Hi,
I received a PDF document, which I have to rearange and redesigned. I assume that it was originaly created in Indesign and exported in PDF for printing. Since i don't have an Indesign file to work with, I opened PDF in Illustrator. When I do that, the missing font warning apears and says that Arial font (which I already have installed) will be displayed using substitue font. I am lost here, sice the text is in Slovak language and some of the letters are missing with this "substitute font".  Appreciate any help.
    Maja

Not really certain what you are asking.
You need the exact version of Arial that was used to generate the PDF if you don't want any substitution. It sounds as though the PDF was generated poorly. Not much cna be done on your end without the exact font other than to simply re-key or reconstruct the text. Realize that there are probably 20 different fonts all named "Arial."

  • Missing fonts warning when adding pages to a book

I have a book with 13 documents added and 105 total pages. I have 10 master pages set up, and each time I add (or delete) pages to a document, I get warning: "The document <doc>.indd needs to be updated but has missing fonts. It may recompose with a default substitute font and result in inacurate page numbers. Do you want to continue updating numbering?"  If I click OK to continue updating the numbering, sometimes an extra page gets added somewhere else in the document. Preflight Book is not showing any errors and I also tried looking at the preflight panel in each of the 13 documents. Neither says anything about a missing font. How else can I find it?

  • Missing fonts warning when opening a Keynote file

I'm using Keynote 2.0.2 on a Mini Mac. Having searched for an answer to the ubiquitous "Missing Font" problem when opening a Keynote file, I was wondering if upgrading to the latest version would solve this problem. Unless it does, we would have to think twice about upgrading the software. A lot of users seem to have the problem with version 3 too. Does anyone have a solution to this? The presentation runs perfectly well, but the warning message is annoying and doesn't look nice when presenting to clients. HELP!
1.42 GHz Mac Mini PPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1GB DDR SDRAM

I've experience this same problem multiple times. There is a way to get rid of the troublesome font, thereby getting rid of the annoying message. I may be glossing over a step or two, but it goes something like this:
    (1) In the Finder, right click on the Keynote file and select "Show Package Contents"
(2)Locate the index.apxl.gz file and open it. The file exands -- then open the index.apxl file with Textedit (or Word). Throw away the gz file.
    (3) Do a search and replace -- find all instances of the troublesome font name and replace it with a non-troublesome font name, such as GillSans
    (4) Close the text file.
Opening the Keynote file should now proceed normally. Note: Better practice this on a dummy file until you are sure everything works. I imagine that if you muck up the index file that the orignial Keynote file might be toast!

  • Missing Font on Devices Page in Itunes

I'm still having issues with my font on the device page in itunes 10.1. I've updated my font and that fixed half of my problems. I ran a font patch for windows vista and that didn't help. Before I updated my font, all text was missing on the device page in itunes. After the update most of the labels are back. The only font missing now is inside the sub boxes on all the pages. Even the Sync button isn't labeled.

it says I need permission to delete this file
Okay ... we could be looking at disk/file damage, then. I've seen that hit people in their fonts like this in some other contexts.
[We'll first try running a disk check (chkdsk) over the C drive. There's Vista instructions in the following document.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Check-your-hard-disk-for-errors (Check your hard disk for errors)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. You'll probably need to schedule the scan to run on restart. The disk check should take quite a while to run. If it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the disk check find/repair any damage? If so, do the remaining display issues clear up?

  • Missing Fonts Error Message-Pages 2.0.1

I created a brochure with Pages (2.0.1) - No problems. I reopened the brochure and saw an error message stating that there were "missing fonts." I have one Admin account and one User account. I installed the application under the User account and created the brochure under the User account. I have not moved or added any fonts - Only have fonts that came with the OS and that were installed by Pages. Please help! This is VERY annoying. Can not find help under OS or Pages help topics.

    CrushU
I had this problem a while back. Sometimes the package info gets confused and you end up with a font that doesn't exist. It tends to happen when converting files from Word but it can happen within Pages. Selecting all the document and changing the font wont correct it however there is a way to solve this:
Open script editor and enter the following script:
    tell application "Pages"
    tell front document
set aRef to a reference to (every character of body text whose font name is "ENTER MISSING FONT NAME")
set font name of aRef to "ENTER NEW CHOSEN FONT"
    end tell
    end tell
Ensure Pages is open and the document is open. Compile the script and run it. Now wait as it takes a while for the script to run and there is no indication it is running. When the script editor is done close the doc and reopen it.
Ensure that you enter the precise name of the font that Pages says is missing and the new one you want to replace it with. If it's misspelt it wont work.
Also this only works on Pages 2, not on Pages 1.

  • Missing Fonts ... I don't care about them

    Hi all,
I recently redid my CV in Pages - importing some text from a Word doc.
I then edited it, applied styles (which is an awesome implementation, btw) and saved it.
However, whenever I open it I get the Missing Fonts message: Windings and Century Gothic. Now, I presume I had these with Office v.X. The thing is I don't care to reload them on my system now.
What I'd like is to be able to open this pages document without the warnings.
I have tried selecting all the text and changing it to one font only (Optima for example) and then saving - but I still get the Missing Fonts warning even when I open that file.
    Any ideas?
    TIA.
    Anthony.
iMac 20-inch: 2GHz Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hullo Anthony:
Look I don't mean to be contrary, but so far as I'm
aware, whatever you like or don't about a given font
is just not the issue here. And really, the simplest
way to completely avoid your problem is to reload the
fonts involved where Pages can find them. That's in
the user or system libraries. First check, though,
with Spotlight, whether in fact you've completely
deinstalled them from your previous MS usage. They
could still be there, but not on a path that Pages
can see. If so, bring them up, then drag them onto
your desktop, and from there into the fonts folder of
either of those libraries. Select and double-click
them, and you'll get a small Font Book screen that
will invite you to install them. Do it.
If you've managed to clean them out, then reload
either your original MS Office or the trial from your
Mac bundle. Never mind if the trial date has expired,
the fonts will still load, and you'll still be able
to access, move, and install them as I've described.
If their presence annoys you, try creating a
collection, say MS fonts, that you needn't ever open,
but that Pages will find to give up these messages.
Not saying there wouldn't be other ways. Just that
hacking around to find them wouldn't be worth the
trouble. Somehow, Pages has imported a demand for
these fonts, even though you've changed them (it
keeps a record, regardless). You just might find that
multiple openings would get rid of the issue - as
rotating logs, for example for the undo and backup
functions, get rid of it: but I'd be guessing, and so
would you. The simplest sure-fire way is to "feed the
beast". Put them back, and your problem's gone.
Had the same strife with Verdana. Hate sans-serifs,
frankly. But what the: gee am I allowed to say that
any more? Point is, the effort you'd spend on putting
them back is miniscule compared to the hacking you'd
have to do to solve the problem otherwise. And to
compensate for the effort, once you've learned to
move fonts you have lying about into the folders that
Pages looks at, you can grab other fonts you might
well enjoy. Like the display fonts in Appleworks that
Pages can display far better, or the sometimes
worthwhile fonts (like Times New Roman) that came
with MS Office and its trial version.
I can also tell you that I've taken what I want from
MS and Appleworks, but wouldn't have chosen your
missing fonts either. But they're there: so I take it
they come with Pages - or else with OsX itself.
I also got rid of Brush Script once - thinking I'd
never use it. But it lurked somewhere in the system:
the default for a gizmo I'd never used. Well I know
somewhere it hides, now. But that mightn't be the
only place - so now I leave it alone. Likewise, your
missing fonts could lurk anywhere: in the help, the
keyboard shortcuts, or the typefaces of pop-up menus.
If the Gorilla wants a banana, then give it a
    banana.
    Cheers.

    Hi Max,
    Great answer!
But the pedant in me is not satisfied. :\
I understand that the simple answer is to reload the fonts, but this is a new iMac that I have Pages installed on, and Office has never touched it ... so the issue about whether or not I correctly deinstalled them previously is a non issue. Additonally Spotlight can't locate the fonts, so I know they are not on my system.
I'm inclined to agree with your suggestion that Pages has imported a demand for them when I was cutting and pasting text from my old resumé. It's just that I should be able to find the reference for these fonts in my document and eliminate them. I think that is the thing that bugs me most.
Anyway, I do appreciate you taking the time to write such a well put together response. Sensible, it was, too. But when confronted with problems like this, I find my capacity for pragmatism goes out the window. My frustration lies not with the Missing Fonts message itself, but more the fact that I can't work out why the Missing Fonts message is appearing and why I can't prevent it from popping up.
Hmmm ... Gorilla doesn't get the banana just yet.

  • I cant place a pdf in Indesign because of missing fonts

I am running into a problem with a pdf add I am trying to place in a booklet. When I go to export the Indesign  document it tells me it cant because the pdf I placed in it has a font I don't have. I always thought you could place and print pdfs without having all the fonts. I thought it was only if you wanted to edit the pdf that you needed the font. Isn't that the point of a pdf? Does any one have a good solution for this? I am using Indesign cc 201 on a mac. The pdf is secure so I cant run any sort of preflight or flattening on it( at least as far as I know).

Is the export really failing, or are you getting a missing font warning and cancelling? The ad may not look good, but you should still be able to export, I think.
But bottom line here is that you need to educate the folks who send in the ads so they always embed the fonts.

  • Missing Fonts when fonts are activated on the system.

I created an Indesign CS6 document (334pg book) and used ITC Garamond Bold for the document subheads. This was done with a paragraph style. After editing the document I get a missing font warning for ITC Garamond Bold. The font is activated on the system using Suitcase Fusion 4. If I create a new document the font is available. Both documents open. One shows the font missing. On a Mac OSX 10.6.8. Any ideas on fixing this missing font error?

Why not obtain FontFingler or FontNuke and run these font cache burping utilities and see if the problem goes away? Is it installed in more than one place? Does one of your documents have a Document Fonts subfolder and the other doesn't? Did you maybe try to Export the afflicted document to IDML, and then turn around and re-open that file?

  • Mapping missing fonts to others on opening

    Hello!
I was wondering if there was a way to have certain fonts be replaced when  document is open, for every document.
For example, I have a regular font, that now is in an open type version and I want every older document that I pick up, to automatically open with the new open type font, replacing the older postscript font. There are a few fonts I would want to map.
Is there a way to do this in InDesign, I believe i did this in quark a few years back.
    Thanks!
    babs

Not automatically as ID comes out of the box, though you might be able to script something. I'm not entirely sure this is a great idea, by the way. OpenType versions may not use the same kerning tables as your originals, so even opeing files in the same version of ID could result in text reflow that would affect line ends and possibly throw off your pagination, so my inclination would be to leave things alone unless you know you are going to edit the file anyway.
You could get a semi-automatic result by removing the old fonts from the system. Every file that used them would throw a missing font warning on open and allow you to go to Find Font wher you can do the substitution manually. Not a lot of help, I'm afraid.

  • Placed Pdf in illustrator missing fonts no warning

I have placed a pdf in illustrator that has embedded subset fonts. In illustrator the fonts display wrong but I get no warning that fonts are missing. When I click on the substituted font the type panel shows it as the correct font name. Are there any cases of a file with missing fonts not displaying a warning? If I save the file and reopen it I do get the font warning.

Possibly there are different versions of the font. The name may be the same, but the document could refer to an older/ different version and only when you save does that info get updated. Hard to tell without actually seeing the Doc. What does Acrobat say exactly about the font? Is there a doifference in that info when you re-create the text locally from within AI and save a PDF with the same options?
