Missing HD Space and Sparse Images

Hey folks:
I'm new and apparently not as computer-savvy as I thought. Here is my issue:
I was looking for a method of sharing my iPhoto files between multiple accounts on my computer. I read that they easiest way to do this was to create a sparse disk image and place the iPhoto files there and then place everything in the "shared" folder. I created the sparse disk image and then decided that it really was not that important to share those files among accounts and then simply deleted the sparse disk image and then emptied my trash--this appears to have been an error because the 40 gigs reserved for the disk image simply disappeared.
My next issue is that I tried to use the "erase empty space" option in Disk Utility, which, while it was running, appears to have caused my computer to lock up. Apparently this process creates sparse disk images and then erases them, but does not erase sparse images already present on the disk. So the result is that I now have not a single bite on my hard drive.
I am sure that there is some method for deleting these sparse disk images, but, as I mentioned, I am a complete novice regarding such things. If anyone could offer some information to assist me I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Did you really trash the disk image itself or did you just "trash" (unmount) the mounted volume? If the latter, the disk image may still be there.
I now have not a single bite on my hard drive.
Launch the Terminal utility, then enter this command, followed by a "return" key:
sudo du -chxd 1 /
You'll be prompted for your administrative account's password. The command will take a while to run. You'll see a series of lines showing the amount of space consumed by each top-level directory hierarchy. Ignore all the small stuff; what you're looking for is where the greatest amount of space is used. For a point of reference, here are the values for some of the entries on my Mac:
- Applications: 8.2G
- Developer: 7.2G
- Library: 14G
- private: 5.0G
- System: 2.7G
- Users: 25G
- usr: 1.1G
Once you've determined where there is an unusually-large amount of space, you can drop down one level and repeat that command. For example, if there is an unreasonably-large amount of space in "private" issue this command:
cd private
Then run the "sudo du" command again. Repeat this process until you've found the space.

  • Hdiutil and creation of more then one partition in a dmg and sparse image?

    Hello,
    My main question,
    after reading the man page and googling, I can't find any way to create a DMG file with more then one partition. Is this even possible?
    My finaly goal is to attach those with -mountRandom and - nobrowse from inside a cocoa.app.
    I need the return value to get the random path to those partitions.
    hdiutil attach test.dmg -mountrandom /Users/dev/Desktop/testdmg
    /dev/disk7 GUIDpartitionscheme
    /dev/disk7s1 Apple_HFS /Users/dev/Desktop/testdmg/dmg.A43MrA
    But I see that when I use a mutli partition dmg ( here simulated ) I will have to look for one or more random paths, something like this.
    hdiutil attach test.dmg -mountrandom /Users/dev/Desktop/testdmg
    /dev/disk7 Applepartitionscheme
    /dev/disk7s1 Applepartitionmap
    /dev/disk7s2 Apple_HFS /Users/dev/Desktop/testdmg/dmg.A43MrA
    /dev/disk7s3 Apple_HFS /Users/dev/Desktop/testdmg/dmg.7IaUpK
    What is the best way?
    to grep a line wich contains '/dmg./ and then awk print $3 ?
    path=/Users/dev/Desktop
    hdiutil attach $path/test.dmg -mountrandom $path/testdmg | grep '/dmg.' | awk '{ print $3 }'
    but what when I attach f.e a sparse image not using the -mountRandom, then I have no '/dmg.' just volumes?
    Is that doable in one universal piece of code?

    I can only answer your question re:multi partition on a .dmg with:

  • Missing HD space and cant repair disk on disk utility

    Ok this has been bugging me for past week now. First off I am missing 40GB of my 80GB HD. I know that disk are suppose to have less then the total but this data is just missing. I have used what size and Disk Inventory X to look for files that are taking up data. I have gotten rid of everything that takes up alot of space. The total size of everything together does not even total 20GB.
    The reason I believe is awhile back I tried to make a partition for windows Xp but later deleted it. I do not know the size I made said parition but It may fit as to why I am missing space.
    Lastly I have tried to use repair disk in disk utilities but it wont let me without running verify disk which when i use says that it failed and that I need to repair and verify using the OSX installation disk which I cant find. I probably wont be able to find the disk so is there anything I can do to fix this?
    I just spend alot of money to get an XP disk and upgrade the RAM on this mac and dont want it to have been a waste. Help me please

    Repairing your HD via the OSX installation disk is your first priority. Do you know anyone else with a Mac running the same version of OSX? Close to an Apple retail location?
    How did you attempt to load XP the first time - bootcamp? How did you delete the partition?

  • How do I move projects from aperture to create space and keep images on external hard drive

    How do I move projects from my iMac aperture 3 to an external hard disk so I keep all originals and create space on my iMac

    Do you want to move your complete Aperture library to an external volume or only selected projects?
    Get yourself an external drive that is formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled) and connect it to a fast port, Thunderbolt, USB 3, for example.
    As a precaution repair your Aperture library using the Aperture Library First Aid Tools (Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual) and make a current backup, before you proceed.
    To move all projects to that drive simply drag your Aperture library to the external drive. Then click it in the Finder to launch Aperture on the new library and test it thoroughly, before you delete the old library.
    To move selected projects to the new drive, select the projects in Aperture and use the command "FIle > Relocate originals" and select a folder on the external drive as the destination in the File Chooser. See: Aperture 3 User Manual: Working with Referenced Images

  • Missing disk space and deleting "previous systems"

    Hmm.... I have an 80G hard disk on a 2006 Macbook intel core duo and cannot load any more updates / applications because MAC OS tells me the disk is nearly full (2G spare). However, I can only find 40G of stuff on there including all the big ones such as music, movies, photos, docs, apps, system, previous systems and library.
    1 - is there anything I need to do (other than delete stuff) to find or free up the space?
    2 - my previous systems folder is 10G - can I delete this without causing damage?
    Any thoughts appreciated!
    Andrew.

    Hi Andrew;
    The Previous System folder was created when you did an Archive & Install some time in the past. If everything is working correctly since the A&I then you can delete the Previous System folder.
    Running your system with only 2 GB of free space greatly increases the chances for file corruption. I would suggest that you boot form the install media and repair the the system disk with disk Utility.

  • The Property Inspector is missing the V Space and H Space fields in DW6 - where did they go?

    I just downloaded DW6.  The Property Inspector is missing the V Space and H Space fields, therefore I am unable to add space around my images.  Suggestions?

    It is no longer available because the problem with that was that it applied spaces around the image rather than where the user actually wanted them.  You now need to use CSS and apply margins and paddings and target exactly where you want them by using something like this:
    img {
        margin-bottom: 0;
        margin-right: 0;
        margin-left: 0;
        margin-top: 0;
        padding-top: 0;
        padding-right: 0;
        padding-bottom: 0;
        padding-left: 0;
    img {
         border: 0;
         padding: 0;
    The second style is generic to set margin and padding for all four sides.
    Good luck.

    Done. Thank you, Allan.
    The sparse image article you sent a link to needs a little updating (or there's some variability in prompts (no password was required) with my OS and/or Disk Utility version), but it worked.
    Phew! It would have been much more time consuming to use Time Machine to recover all my photos after repartitioning the drive.

  • Missing Spaces and Time Machine dock icons (Tiger to Snow Leopard upgrade)

    I noticed on my MacBook (Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade) that it has icons for Spaces and Time Machine in the dock to the left of the divider. These are missing from the dock on my iMac that I upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard. They are both System Preferences with no option for adding to the dock in the Preferences and the Preference icon in "Show All" in System Preferences is not selectable. I located them in System/Library/PreferencesPane but dragging the preference pane file to the dock doesn't work. I did a Show Package Content but did not see anything in the folder that could be dragged like an application. I can put it on the right with the stacks but is there a way to add a Preference to the dock on the application side?

    Time Machine is in your Applications folder and Spaces is in your Applications/Utilities folder. You can drag them to the dock from there.

    This lloks like your preferences file might have become corrupted.
    you probably have a problem with corrupted user preferences.
    Remove the Preferences: Remove the Aperture's user preferences from the User Library as described here:
    Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
    Note:Your User Library is hidden by default in 10.7.x or later - to open it in a Finder window use the "Go" menu from the Finder's main menu bar.
    Quit Aperture, if it is running. Log off and on again.
    Open the user library by using the Finder's "Go > Go to Folder" menu and hold down the options-key, until "Library" appears in the drop down menu. Select it.
    In the widow that will open, scroll down to "Preferences"
    From the "Preferences" folder  remove "com.apple.Aperture.plist".
    Then try to launch Aperture again.
    But deleting the "Preferences" file will cause Aperture to forget the preferences settings. Be prepared to have to reset all options you set using the Aperture Preferences panel.

    MBP 2011 15 late edition:  Missing HD space - HD shows usage to be 237 GB.  Adding up usage by apps, libriary, system and users shows usage to be 67GB. Help

    "Hacked" is not my terminology, and I don't believe it's intended to be derogatory. What you describe is a perfectly legitimate reason to alter Hosts.
    If your Mac still isn't working as expected after uninstalling Intego and Trend Micro, read on. The necessity to have a reliable backup cannot be overstated, since what you describe may be an indication of impending disk failure.
    Back up your Mac if you have not already done so. To learn how to to that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
    If your Mac is momentarily unresponsive, consider the following.
    Launch the Console app - it is in your Utilities folder. You can find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.
    If the log list column on the left is not already displayed, show the log list by selecting Show Log List from Console's View menu. Select Show Toolbar if it is not already shown.
    Locate system.log in the list and select it. Many date and time-stamped entries will appear, hundreds of them, and you must find the entries relevant to your Mac's problem.
    To do that click the Clear Display button in the Toolbar. All previously displayed log entries will be disappear.
    Next: Perform whatever actions cause the Mac to exhibit the slow behavior. If the problem is caused by errors logged by the system, the Console window will show them being recorded in system.log.
    One or more of them, along with their time stamps, may reveal the reason for the problem you describe.
    Copy and paste those log entries in a reply. If hundreds of the same repetitive messages appear, please edit them before posting. There should be no need for more than a few log entries.
    Most of the entries will be cryptic but will contain information you might consider personal such as your Mac's name. If you do not want that information to appear, delete or obscure it when posting your reply. Leave enough information so that the entries can be deciphered.

  • Missing HD Space even after Erase and Install

    Ok, so I own a 2.4GHz MBP, 200GB HD 7,200RPM, 4GB of memory... Penryn model that my brother purchased for the each of us back in about August of last year (2008). So recently my brother upgraded to the Unibody and gave me his MBP so that I can give it to my wife. So now, I have 2 of the same exact MBP's.
    So the problem that I'm having is that when I did a Erase and Install on the MBP that was given to me, it didn't have the same amount of HD space as the one I originally had. I only know this, because I recently did an Erase and Install on my original MBP and because I wanted a fresh MBP. When I did the Erase and Install on my original MBP, I noticed that it had about 174GB of HD space left.
    Now with the MBP that I just received, I did the same exact Erase and Install to my new MBP and it only has 171.71GB of HD space.
    Also, I notice after doing the Erase and Install again on the new MBP. I noticed that when I did the Customize portion it stated that I am going to be need 9.2GB of available space and that I have 185GB of available space. So after I did the Erase and Install, shouldn't it have about 174GB of space like my original MBP. And that's why I know my new MBP is missing HD space.
    So my question is that, why am I missing HD space on my new MBP after Erase and Install and what can I do to get it right. Why wouldn't have the two computers have the same specs after Erase and Install has been done exactly the same way? (The only reason I did the Erase and Install on the new MBP is so that I can configure it for my wife with her login and info.)
    Sorry for the long read... but here are the cliff notes.
    1. I have 2 MBP that are exactly the same.
    2. I did an Erase and Install on both MBP.
    3. After Erase and Install, one of them has about 3GB less HD space.
    If anyone can help me, please let me know. I will post replies here as well.
    Otherwise, I will be taking it back to Apple since it's still under warranty.
    Thanks

    But my problem is right after the same exact Erase and Install on both, they have different free space.
    How could you possibly know this without using the drives? IOW, how & when are you checking the drives' capacity & the used & available space of each?
    Again, I've noticed that the HD space specifies that it has 185.99GB of available space after the OS, but once you add certain things, it specifies that it will be using 9.2GB of the available 185.99GB.
    What do you mean by "185.99GB of available space after the OS"? What are the "certain things" & what is the "it" that specifies 9.2GB will be used?
    If you really mean each drive is showing a *total capacity* of 185.99 GB (before or after installing anything), this is right for a "200 GB" drive. That is because the drive capacity specification is given in decimal based gigabytes but the computer reports capacity in binary based ones. (See paragraph 3 in my post at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9389432&#9389432 or search this forum for the word "gibibyte" for more about that.) This number should not change when something is installed -- it is the total capacity of the drive.
    If the "certain thing" that says 9.2 GB (or whatever) is the installer application, be advised that it is telling you +the free space needed for the installation+, which is not that same thing as +the space used by the installed files+ once the process is complete. This is because the installer requires temporary file space to assemble the files it will install, hold the results of pre- & post- installation checks, & so on. This temporary space is eventually freed up once the files are in place. In part because of this, the reported space needed is only an estimate, & is always more than the space used by the installed files. (IOW, if it says 9.2 GB are needed for the installation, you should always see less than this used by the sum of all the files installed.)
    Thus, as I have already explained as best as I know how, you need to look not just at the free space of each drive but at the total capacity, the number of files & folders used on each volume, & the partition map if you want to make a meaningful comparison of the two drives. I have already explained how to do this using Disk Utility. If you are not willing to do that but instead rely on what appear to be flawed inferences from other things, I can't help you any more than I already have.

  • White spaces before and after Images

    I have several images in my FM document,
    They are either gif or jpg.
    All set in Anchored frames, left-aligned.
    I have made most of them conditional for Online help, so they
    dont show up in my Online help.
    My issue is I am not sure how to remove all the space that
    appears before and after the images (they are not displayed because
    I have set it to conditional)
    I remember somewhere that the spaces for such images can be
    removed.
    Please let me know if there is.

    Hi,
    Thanks for replying.
    I have removed the spaces before and after the images in
    Frame.
    Set the images to be conditional (only for print). If there
    are any images they are in anchored frame--left aligned.
    So my problem is that the space before - after and the place
    where the image originally was (now not displayed as it is
    conditional) have these huge white spaces displayed.
    I am not sure how to map them or how to delete them.
    I am familiar in FM, and Robohelp (although i have worked
    with Word only and it was easy). For some reason this seems too
    hard.
    Hope I have gotten across to you with my question.
