Missing high res options on Retina MacBook Pro

My display preferences don't allow me to choose "looks like 1680x1050" or "1920x1200". Instead the first three scale options, "larger text" to "best" do nothing. Where as the last two are "looks like 960x600" and "looks like 1440x900".
Has anyone else encountered this problem? I've tried rebooting but with no luck.
Cheers
Ryan

I found the solution, so incase someone else has this issue he's the problem
SwitchResX 4.3.0 deletes a system file (it's fixed in 4.3.1). If this has happened you need to restore it.
The file is:
/System/Library/Displays/Overrides/DisplayVendorID-610/DisplayProductID-a00f
And it should contain this XML:

  • Missing retina display option on retina macbook pro

Hi, I am trying to change the display preferences on my late 2013 13" retina macbook pro, however there seems to be no "Retina (Best)" option any more.
Can anyone please let me know what setting to use to make sure I am on the retina setting and getting the most from my display?
    Running 10.10.3
    Thank you

    Choose "Default for display."

InDesign CS6 is not optimized for retina displays. You’ll need to move to Creative Cloud for retina compatibility.

  • Non-retina MacBook Pro advice

Hi, I need your advice concerning a non-retina MacBook Pro 15".
I have a 5 years old MacBook Pro 15 (not unibody), upgraded with RAM and SSD. It's working fine but I would have to spend about 300€ to replace battery and fix another little problem. Again, the Mac is working fine and I'm pretty satisifed with it.
Anyway, a friend who is also a certified apple tech suggested me to go for a new one.
Being a significantly investment (around 2000€), I'd like to know your opinion about the retina vs non retina models.
He told me to go for the non-retina because:
    - I already own a Sata3 SSD which can be installed on the new one
    - save the money I would spend for my actual mac to get the high res antiglare option
    - get the firewire and superdrive
    - easy ram upgrade
    - slightly cheaper
    - it should serve another 5 years time frame
    What about it?
My main field is web development, CS6, audio production, office and common daily stuff.
One last question. Since the latest update was in June 2012, is it worth to wait for a 2013 model?
    Thank you very much!

The jury is still out on the retina display for the premium one has to pay.  Personally, I would examine what is available in the refurbished section.  The pricing is more favorable and you get essentially new MBPs with the same warranty and Apple support as virgin new ones.
If cutting edge performance is your preference, do wait for the next generation when ever that will be.  I on the other hand went 'backwards' and recently bought a late 2011 MBP.  The principle reason being that I wanted the 17" display.  It may not have all of the latest 'speed' options but I find it to be an excellent machine.
I also have a 2006 Core Duo and it works perfectly within the constraints of the installed hardware.  It is noticeably slower in certain situations compared to the newer MBPs but unless one's requirements are for really heavy duty applications, it is more than adequate.
Determine what your real needs are and what features are really required and go from there Try to extinguish emotion in your selection and do an impartial cost benefit analysis.
    Ciao.

  • How to install Photoshop CS3 disc on a Retina MacBook Pro?

Just bought a new Retina Macbook pro and trying to install CS3... the program from my old Macbook would not work when moved to the new one. I have the original disc but this will not work on new Macbooks without a drive.
    Anyone any ideas?

Feel free to contact support, but they'll only give you the finger, metaphorically. There is no support for old versions beyond sorting out your activation. And you get what was to be expected. All Adobe apps must be properly installed. Copying the installer files to a USB stick will work just fine. If for soem reason that's not possible, download using this method:
Direct Download Links for Adobe Software
You'll still run into trouble, though. CS3 was never tested on contemporary versions of OSX nor will it deal properly with Retina displays. As a minor, you will have to enable the half-res option in your display prefs during install and possibly usage of the program...

  • CS5 Photoshop/Bridge/Suite not working on new Retina Macbook Pro, running Mavericks 10.9.2

I recently purchased a new Retina MacBook Pro laptop running Mavericks OS X 10.9.2. I had Apple perform a data migration of all my apps and files from my older laptop onto the new one. Now when I go to open Photoshop CS5 I receive the following error message, "Could not synchronize the color settings because of a program error." Photoshop will then open but I can't do anything in the app. When I go to quit Photoshop I get this error message: "Could not save Preferences because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the 'Get Info' command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders."
I am able to open Bridge, however the app in entiretly is noticeably lo-res and pixelated looking, so clearly something is not up to speed there either.
InDesign and Illustrator are also having issues.
I have run the System Update and it does not show anything in the CS5 Suite needing to be updated.
    Please advise! Thank you.

I do not get the Airplay icon on my Macbook's menu bar. I have checked the box in the Display settings to show mirroring options but still no icon. Airplay Display shows 'No device Detected'. Both AppleTV and MacBook Pro are on the same physical Network (192.168.1.0/24) and connected directly to my home ethernet switch (not wirelessly). I also made sure MacBook's Firewall is disable. Airplay feature use to work before upgrade to 10.9.2. As far as Home sharing from my AppleTV has a similar issue; it just does not find my MacBook after a while of loading and searching my music library. I am logged in to icloud on both devices (appletv and macbook). Also use to work before upgrade. Any ideas or recommendations. Thanks.

  • Retina MacBook Pro is not connecting with Airport Extreme 5 GHz signal

I believe I have done my due diligence to find the answer to my question here and other places but I must be missing it. I have a Retina MacBook Pro that as far as I know should select the 5 GHz signal from my Airport Extreme (Generation 1 with 7.6.4 firmware) which is literally 3 ft. from my computer. When I click on the Airport icon in the menu bar, it is indicating a 2.4 GHz connection. I have looked at discussions which say I can give separate names to to both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signals. I can't seem to find that. I also read where you can reorder the order of signal preference. I can't seem to find that either. Interestingly, I have an Airport Express that is extending the network. When option clicking on its icon in airport utility, I can see both the 2.4 and 5 GHz information. I don't se that in the Airport Extreme. I am thinking about gettng the newest Airport Extreme but if I don't need to...
    Thanks for any help!

as far as I know should select the 5 GHz signal from my Airport Extreme (Generation 1 with 7.6.4 firmware) which is literally 3 ft. from my computer
A Generation 1 AirPort Extreme is not a simultaneous dual band wireless router. It can produce either a 2.4 GHz....or....a 5 GHz wireless network signal, but not both simultaneously.
If you want the Gen 1 Extreme to produce and deliver a 5 GHz wireless network, it can do so, but any 2.4 GHz devices that you have will not be able to connect to the 5 GHz signal.
A new simultaneous dual band AirPort Extreme will produce both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signal simultaneously. Wireless devices will automatically connect to the best signal quality based on their capabilities and location in relation to the AirPort Extreme.

  • Retina MacBook Pro boot time slow

    Hi there,
I have a Retina MacBook Pro 2015  running Yosemite 10.10.3. Ever since updating I have noticed a slow boot up time. I press the power button, hear the Mac sound, then it's a black screen for 20-30 seconds, after that I see the Apple logo for 5 seconds then it's in my login screen... So why is it a slow boot up time? Or is it  suppose to be that long? It was not when I was on the Yosemite version before 10.10.3.

    Hey Guys,
I found the solution browsing the web. Here is the link on how to fix your MacBook Pro start up time, http://www.redmondpie.com/fix-slow-boot-up-after-os-x-10.10.3-yosemite-update-he res-how/ . As mentioned in option one, "head to the System Preferences, and selecting Startup Disk. Then, select your primary disk, and hit ‘Restart’ from the same window." Fixed my issue.

  • Sharing my experience, water spill accident on my Retina Macbook Pro

I would like to share my experience to the community and to fellow mac users regarding my water spill accident on my 1-week fresh Retina Macbook Pro.
Before begining, i appologize for gramar or spelling mistakes since I am French and English is not my first language.
    So lets begin ...
My 2006 macbook pro started giving away and i knew that i had to replace it very soon. So i opted for a high end machine because i knew i needed something for at least 5 years.
After much thought, i bought a Retina Macbook Pro since for work i needed a 15 inch screen laptop and portability was key for me.
Normally at work the Retina Macbook Pro sits on an aluminum Rain Design stand, but on thursday, i was at a co-worker office brain-storming for an important presentation. So i had my Retina macbook pro sitting on a small conference table and next to it i had a cup of water (THE CULPRIT), 200 ml to be precise.
I know, i know ... i shouldn't have been drinking a beverage while using my computer at the same time but i'm always careful with my stuff (proof my 2006 macbook pro still lives).
So enough introduction ... After taking a sip from that cup of water i accidently spilled the cup on my keyboard. To be precise i spilled around 160 ml of tap water on the keyboard while the computer was ON (on battery).
I froze for 5 seconds cursing in French, looking at the puddle of water on my keyboard, then i immediatley FORCED shut down the computer.
I ran for paper towels and started absorbing as much as i can, while absorbing the water my fellow co-worker was helping me, and since the power button is so tiny and placed on the keyboard, he accidently turned it back ON again ... I immediatly turned it back off (forced) and kept on absorbing as much liquid as i can.
To my surprise, we kept on bringing paper towels and absorbing ...The water was just sitting on top of the computer and i had the impression that not a whole much was making it inside.
After finsihing the first cleaning process ... i placed two dry paper towels on the keyboard and closed the screen, fliped the computer upside down so it was sitting on the screen. This was on thursday. I DID NOT DISCONNECT THE BATTERY (since i did not have the necessary tools for Apple's alien screws).
Friday morning, when i arrived at the office, i checked the laptop (still haven't turned it on) ... Paper towels were wet, so i changed them ....
I left it over the weekend at work .... doing some research on water spills ... i decided not to use rice or hair dryers or opening the machine ... i estimated that what could've made it through the inside of the laptop was roughly 20 ml of water that was absorbed by a plastic sheet seperating the keyboard from the logic board.
Monday, D-day, i tried turning the laptop ON and it booted normaly ... i was a bit skeptic, i was thinking maybe the RAM modules were fried or certain keys on the keyboard or the sound controller ... but nothing everything seemed normal.
I just finished running the Apple Hardware Extensive Test and everything seems running fine.
So to all persons who will be in the same case as mine - WATER SPILL - (not coffee, cola, or sugary acidic beverages spill). Turn off the machine as fast as you can, absorb water as much as you can, flip the computer on its screen side while placing paper towels to absorb humidity, time is on your side so the more you wait the better, in my case 3.5 days, and PRAY .
The waranty is probably voided since black sensors inside the machine turns to red as soon as they contact water, (like litnus paper with acids or bases)
Hope my experience will help you get through yours ...

9 times out of 10, you cannot, will not, shall NOT get thru same,.......corrosion sets in.
Many people suffer the pain of a "dried out and working notebook"..........  only to learn corrosion will soon ruin it.
Liquid spills, why your MacBook chassis is a one-way valve for spills
After a substantial spill many people will turn their notebook upside down and shake it, not only does this not work, but it spreads liquid havoc throughout your machine and makes things often as bad as possible.
The keyboard itself acts like a one way valve in the case of a substantial liquid spill. While liquid pours into the bottom chassis easy, it does not come out easily at all, and in the case of any spill, most of it will not come out by turning it upside down. Disconnect all power and contact Apple for diagnostics and repair.
Do not attempt to, after a spill, ‘dry out your MacBook’ and test it
After a spill most people invariably try to “dry out” their notebook by various methods, including hair dryers and otherwise. This both does not work, and after a substantial spill of any magnitude, even if the liquid was water, residue is left behind.
There are additionally many very tight places inside your notebook where liquids will linger for a very long time, and cause corrosion or worse.
Immediately unplug your notebook and contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and parts replacement.
In the case of very minor spills people will “dry out” their notebook and feel success that their notebook is working ok, however invariably in nearly all instances after 4-14 days an error / fault pops up and is usually followed by more.
In case of a spill, damage estimates are impossible,.....anything can be fixed, without question.......the question is cost.
contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and cost estimation ....possible parts replacement.

  • No Trackpad / Keyboard on Windows 7 Installation on mid-2014 15" Retina MacBook Pro

    Hello,
Although there is a similar thread regarding this  --  this applies to a newly released mid-2014 15" Retina MacBook Pro and the solution posted in the original thread does not work for this newer model.
I am attempting to install Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a mid-2014 15" Retina MacBook Pro.  (Running Mavericks 10.9.5)  I Have both an original Windows 7 Install DVD and a downloaded ISO file as well.
PLEASE NOTE:  That because I have need for multiple partitions on the SSD drive, I am not able to use Boot Camp Assistant to do the actual install.  I have accomplished this a number of times in the past without any issues during or after the install.  I have an MS-DOS(FAT) partition ready to go.
When I restart from the Windows 7 install DVD I get to the "Choose Language" screen and I have no trackpad or keyboard.  A wired USB Mouse does not work either
I am not able to create an install USB drive for this model because Boot Camp Assistant gets to the "Download the latest Windows support software from Apple" task it gives an error message "Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server"  (NOTE: Using Boot Camp Assistant to ONLY "Download the latest Windows support software from Apple" as I get the same error message when attempting to do that.
It is my understanding based on the Apple article   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634  that I need to download the driver software directly from Apple with the link they provide.  I DID successfully download the Windows support software from Apple following the instructions in that article.  However, I am not aware of any way to include that downloaded software when using Boot Camp Assistant to create a USB install drive.
I tried the trick with the USB drive as explained in apple article  http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4599  but even with a freshly formatted MS-DOS(FAT) USB drive in the USB port on the left of the MacBook Pro and the Apple USB Optical Drive plugged into the USB port on the right side of the MacBook Pro, I still have no Trackpad or keyboard when I get to the first screen of the Windows installation.
I spent the last two days searching posts here and in general and only end up more baffled than before . . .
I am as positive as possible that the USB drives I am using are USB 2 and NOT USB 3.  Although I guess that does not matter if I can't use Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows installer that includes the Windows drivers for the MacBook Pro Hardware . . .
Some of the posts suggest that the Windows drivers from Apple need to be included on a USB install drive created with Boot Camp Assistant.  That appears to be impossible at the moment if the Software Update Server does not contain them.  I am confused as to why the are available directly from Apple  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1721 but they are not available when using Boot Camp Assistant????
Am I missing something???  Is this just a matter of waiting for Apple to add the necessary drivers to the Software Update server???  (It has only been two months since this MacBook Pro was released)
Has anyone successfully installed Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a mid-2014 MacBook Pro running Mavericks???
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated . . .
    John

    1. I have tried copying the Keyboard/Trackpad/Mouse drivers to the $WinPEDriver$ directory with mixed success on a 2012 MBP.
    2. My experience is based on a 2013 rMBP. You may be able to use an Apple USB Keypad/Mouse to better success.
    3. See http://www.macworld.com/article/2460820/macbook-pro-mid-2014-review-minor-update -offers-slightly-better-cpu-performance.html for HW differences between the two machines.
    4. If you have access to a 2013 rMBP, I can suggest trying to build the USB on that and working with the USB to see if you can make it install Windows. the rMBP 2014 and rMBP 2013 have the same HW, except some CPU changes. You can also try building the USB at the nearest Apple store, if possible.
    5. There is a section in AutoUnattend.xml, which is supposed to install all drivers in $WinPEDriver$ (see this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2686316 )

  • Seems like non retina macbook pro is more expensive than retina macbook pro!

MacBook Pro 15-inch 2.6 GHz is $2,299.00 with the Antiglare Widescreen Display now. If I wanna upgrade it with Crucial 16GB kit ($80) and 256GB Crucial m4 2.5" SSD with Data Transfer Kit ($220) it's gonna coast $2,599.00 all together.  On the other hand, with the base Retina version with the upgrades (2.6 GHz, 16GB) from Apple It only coasts 2,499.00.  I even save $100 for my external DVD burner if I want to get one. Most people say on this forum non retina is cheaper than retina MAcbook pro but I couldn't figure it out how please tell me if I am missing anything!
I have been looking for most discussions in this forum about retina and non retina Macbook pro.  Most people think that upgrading is the biggest issue with the Retina Macbook pro but can we upgrade the non retina version more than 16GB?  if we can't it's not an issue.  With the SDD I guess we can go with the external ones if we really need one and I assume that external SSD's are going to get cheaper in the time too or we can get external USB3 / Thunderbolt hard drives.  I just decided to purchase one of these Macbook pro and started looking for more information online to figure out which one is better but I got more confused because the numbers say the Retina is cheaper and upgrading is not that big of a deal but most people who know about Apple products more than me on this forum say non Retina is cheaper and it can be upgraded after purchasing it.
I might be wrong with my thoughts but I need some info about upgrading. What rigs can I upgrade with the non retina Macbook pro?
(Only RAM and Hard drive or more than that?)  I would like to know your thoughts and advises too?
    Thanks for your help!
I am thinking of getting one of these for video editing (Final cut pro X)!

Yep, the only things that you can upgrade on the non-Retina models is the RAM and the HD/SSD. I'm assuming that your calculations are correct, so you've just got to decide if you want to the Retina display model or not. For me, there have been too many issues with the Retina models to buy one just now - but I'm sure that there are a lot of happy Retina owners out there - we only hear from those having problems.

  • Recurring Kernel Panics on Retina Macbook Pro

I've got a Retina Macbook Pro which has spontaneous kernel panics. I'm not sure how to go about troubleshooting it and would love some guidance here. I think experience with reading the logs and understanding what kernel extensions are doing and stuff is what I need, but I don't have that experience yet
Anyways, some of the KPs happen with a Thunderbolt display connected, some without. From what I can gather from the kext in the backtrace, the Thunderbolt's ethernet adapter extension was implicated somehow, leading me to believe the issue has something to do with the Thunderbolt display... But not sure what it really means that it is in that backtrace...
Also, the thunderbolt display sometimes flickers off and on. This is not reproducible, it only happens sometimes.

I have googled for guides on interpretting OS X kernel panics and the kext backtraces but most guides say something along the lines of "check some hardware stuff, if not that, the easiest option is reinstall OS X". That's fine and dandy, and I'm pretty sure it would resolve this issue, but I would really like to understand what the problem is an try to fix it. I can easily reinstall OS X but that's no fun and doesn't teach me anything. If that's what I need to do, I will definitely do it.
    Thanks for any guidance!

    Hi -
I have had multiple Kernel Panics in the last week or so... I only seems to happen when I have 2 Thunderbolt Displays plugged in.
Does this appear to be a Hadware or Software issue... can you tell?
Thank ou in advance for your recommendation.
Here is my last from just a little wile ago:

  • Display flickering in Safari-Retina MacBook Pro

Certain pictures and spots on webpages flicker, disappear, get locked up, etc., on webpages on Safari on Retina MacBook Pro.  The whole display has never been affected.  It seems to only happen in Safari on websites such as Facebook.  I'd take it to an Apple Genius but I can't get it to do it.  It seems completely random.  What could be causing this?

I am having the same issue. I have noticed that it only happens in Safari, and in my professional opinion as a software engineer, it is a software issue with Safari. I would say that the problem is due to the way that Safari handles scaling web sites to the high resolution display.
I have not tried this, but one could test this by switching the display resolution to "scaled for more space" in preferences. For the uninitiated, this will turn the "retina display" graphics scaling off, and give you the same 1:1 resolution you would get on a standard Mac display. That may turn off the scaling feature in Safari, and prevent the flickering issue. I would, however, not be surprised if it did not fix the issue.
Hopefully, to allay any/everyone's concerns, when an issue happens in a particular piece of software, but not in every piece of software then it is likely an issue with only that piece of software. I would not allow the Geniuses to replace your hardware in that case. You may end up spinning your wheels with no resolution to the issue.
For this I would just wait for the next release of Safari (as much of a pain in the behind as that is).

  • Keeping my Retina MacBook Pro safe in my dorm.

I have a retina MacBook Pro and was wondering how to keep it safe in my dorm room. The rMBP doesnt have a lock on it like the other MacBooks so I was looking for suggestions. I know buying a safe is an option but I figured I would ask.

  • Connecting a 144hz monitor to 15'' retina macbook pro?

Hi, I recently bought the benq xl2411z 24'' monitor which has the capacity to run in 140hz as opposed to 60hz. I have been told that you cannot run 144hz in OSX but you can do it in Windows (bootcamp),
Right now the screen is connected via HDMI; however, I have been told that HDMI is incapable of running 140hz and that I need to use DVI.
So basically, I'm wondering what is the best way to connect the external monitor to run 144hz?
    Thanks!
BTW I have a mid 2014 retina macbook pro 15'' with intel iris pro (not discrete graphics).

Thanks for the reply, I eventually figured it out on my own. But for anyone else looking into this, yeah you need a Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI converter (the expensive one, not just the Mini Displayport to DVI). It does run 144Hz which is good. In my case I have a eGPU I was building, so in the end I didn't need the adaptor after all; but for most people you'll need the adaptor if you want to connect a high refresh rate monitor directly to your MPB.
