Missing kernel modules in 2.6.35.12

I'm building the LTS kernel 2.6.35.12 and have noticed several key modules are completely missing: lirc_i2c and lirc_dev.  If I compare the confg from ARCH 2.6.35 to that of ARCH 2.6.37, I see that the entire section within the config that builds these is missing.  I know for a fact that there are supported under 2.6.35 because I have been using this same setup since 2.6.26 just fine.
Here is a bit from 2.6.37's config that shows where these are:
# Texas Instruments shared transport line discipline
CONFIG_ST_BT=m
CONFIG_ADIS16255=m
CONFIG_FB_XGI=m
CONFIG_LIRC_STAGING=y
CONFIG_LIRC_BT829=m
CONFIG_LIRC_I2C=m
CONFIG_LIRC_IGORPLUGUSB=m
CONFIG_LIRC_IMON=m
CONFIG_LIRC_IT87=m
This section for 2.6.37 is found:
-> Device Drivers
-> Staging drivers (STAGING [=y])
-> Exclude Staging drivers from being built (STAGING_EXCLUDE_BUILD [=n])
-> Linux Infrared Remote Control IR receiver/transmitter drivers (LIRC_STAGING [=y])
Again, under 2.6.35 there is no corresponding entry for the "Linux Infrared Remote Control IR receiver/transmitter drivers" but again, I know that my remote worked back when Arch had 2.6.35.x in [core].
Thoughts as to how to enable building them under the LTS 2.6.35.x is appreciated!

iphitus wrote:Kernel modules for 2.6 have a .ko NOT .o filename.
The included makefile is written for a 2.6 kernel and produces a .o, and Gentoo used to mix the two, although Gentoo is hardly the golden standard.
Please ensure that you use the included makefiles and installation options included with the driver and run depmod -a after installing.
Both the vanilla kernel and the pkgbuild include the source and makefile unchanged in the correct place. Both are patched correctly as per the included readme.
If the driver is precompiled and has no make options, then it will *not* work under any circumstances.
I don't think I can precompile it, since it depends on about a dozen headers from include/scsi, which all have compile-time macros set by the kernel's makefiles. Even if I could track down every #ifdef and set the macro by hand, I wouldn't want to.
What driver is it? It would help us identify your problem much more easily.
Areca ARC1210 Source driver. Before you spend any time on this particular module, I should reiterate that I don't think there's anything wrong with the module itself, I was just looking for a minimum effort method to install the module, preferably without a custom kernel. I don't see this as a very likely option anymore, so more than likely I will use the pkgbuild I wrote for the purpose.

    you get the idea.
    Now upon inspection of my system I found that my /lib/modules/3.3.8-1-ARCH/kernel/ looks like this:
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 Jun 5 09:30 extramodules -> ../extramodules-3.3-ARCH
    drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 4096 Jun 5 09:29 kernel

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 355147 Jun 5 09:29 modules.symbols.bin
    so it makes sense that the directory and files are not found. The question is where is the problem?
    Was my Arch web install bad or is there a problem with today's kernel upgrade?

    Terminator & Gcool,
    Thank you both for your help.
    I ended up following the link Terminator posted in his reply and I was able to solve the problem.
    Unlike pineapple-biku (in the aforementioned thread) I did not chroot my machine I just:
    pacman -S udev
    pacman -S mkinitcpio
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    pacman -S linux
    and that solved the problem.
    It's odd, however, the number of people having similar problems upgrading the kernel ... seems like there is a bug somewhere that seems to
    affect people that "meet certain criteria".
    Thanks gain guys!!

    Note that all the missing modules are '.ko', rather than the gzipped '.ko.gz' that you should expect with the arch kernel. This indicates that depmod failed when you installed the kernel.

  • [Solved] (WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver.

    fglrx has just recently stopped working, and I can't quite pinpoint when that was because I honestly hadn't noticed until checking.  I've tried a few reinstalls and different xorg options so far, but had no luck.

    Would it be possible to explain the other warnings in Xorg.0.log?  Rather curious about those apart from the obvious one, too.
    Thanks.

    Indeed, that seems the end-all error of it all.
    I'll summarise my warnings, some for curious reasons:
    (WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory) # What's this?
    (WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found # Not a problem.
    (WW) fglrx(0): Only one display is connnected,so single mode is enabled # No problem.
    (WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver.
    (WW) fglrx(0): ***********************************************
    (WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed! *
    (WW) fglrx(0): * (maybe driver kernel module missing or bad) *
    (WW) fglrx(0): * 2D acceleraton available (MMIO) *
    (WW) fglrx(0): * no 3D acceleration available *
    (WW) fglrx(0): ********************************************* *
    Anyway, I wondered about versions and noticed this:
    (II) fglrx(0): [drm] DRM interface version 1.0
    (II) fglrx(0): [drm] created "fglrx" driver at busid "PCI:1:0:0"
    (II) fglrx(0): [drm] added 8192 byte SAREA at 0xbc000
    (II) fglrx(0): [drm] mapped SAREA 0xbc000 to 0xb7285000
    (II) fglrx(0): [drm] framebuffer handle = 0xbd000
    (II) fglrx(0): [drm] added 1 reserved context for kernel
    (II) fglrx(0): DRIScreenInit done
    (II) fglrx(0): Kernel Module Version Information:
    (II) fglrx(0): Name: fglrx
    (II) fglrx(0): Version: 8.37.6
    (II) fglrx(0): Date: May 25 2007
    (II) fglrx(0): Desc: ATI FireGL DRM kernel module
    (WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver. # included to show where this was displayed
    All versions previous to that show 8.38.6:
    (II) Module fglrx: vendor="FireGL - ATI Technologies Inc."
    compiled for 7.1.0, module version = 8.38.6
    Module class: X.Org Video Driver
    ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 1.0
    So I assume I have an old version dotted around somewhere, but I'm not sure about how it's all loaded and such.
    Now, quoting something I'd come across a few times and taking it from thinkwiki:
    If you lose hardware acceleration after a driver update this can be caused by an old fglrx kernel module being loaded.
    Check out /var/log/Xorg.0.log for a message like:
        (WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver.
        (EE) fglrx(0): incompatible kernel module detected - HW accelerated OpenGL will not work
    You can verify this yourself by looking at the version message some lines above. It should read something not matching the installed version like:
        (II) fglrx(0): Kernel Module Version Information:
        (II) fglrx(0): Name: fglrx
        (II) fglrx(0): Version: 8.10.19
    The cause for this trouble might be that there resist multiple versions of the fglrx module within the kernel module search path.
    Go to /lib/modules/<your linux kernel version>/ and type # grep fglrx modules.dep.
    If grep finds multiple lines you nailed down the problem. All you have to do now is to delete any versions of the module (look at the filedate) but the most current one. Then run # depmod and you are done.
    Hint:
    Newer versions (8.21.7) of the fglrx module seem to be installed in the extra/ subdirectory.
    Older versions (8.19.10) used to be located in the kernel/drivers/char/drm/ subdirectory.
    How does this apply to Arch?  I only found one instance of fglrx by using that method.
    Edit: Forgot to add that I've tried reinstalling a few times, it doesn't really seem to do anything.  Wondering if I should attempt to install an older version or something, but I don't get why the driver numbers don't match for me.  Surely others have updated their drivers too.

  • VFAT kernel module won't load [SOLVED]

    I'm running kernel version 3.7.5 and after the update that got me to that version, it appears to have completely borked VFAT and kernel modules in general. My system still runs fine, but the vfat module is missing and cannot be loaded with modprobe or insmod. Oddly, the kernel object exists in /usr/lib/modules, yet my system seems to be ignoring it. Upon further investigation, it appears that it is impossible to load or remove ANY modules using modprobe or insmod. I recently did a reinstall of Arch, following exactly the steps in the Beginner's Guide, if that makes any difference.
    Help? Please? I need the vfat module loaded before I can compile a custom kernel (my next big project)

    yup, that worked *facepalm* marking as solved.

  • About loading kernel modules

    Dear Arch Community,
    I have some issues loading a kernel module. Namely tp_smapi. I myself have never loaded kernel modules before, so I guess I just missed something basic. Here is what I did:
    I followed the wiki to install it:
    $ sudo pacman -S tp_smapi
    and restarted my computer. Yet, the promissed directory to occur did not do so:
    $ ls /sys/devices/platform/smapi
    ls: cannot access /sys/devices/platform/smapi: No such file or directory
    I noticed that some files mentioned by other users don't exist on my system, e.g.
    /etc/modules-load.d/tp_smapi.conf
    /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
    Also, systemd reports the following:
    $ systemctl list-units
    UNIT LOAD ACTIVE SUB DESCRIPTION
    systemd-modules-load.service loaded failed failed Load Kernel Modules
    So, what is it that I might not have taken care of?
    Thank you,
    Tetrapilot

    @ #2: Well, my model actually does not appear on the list. However, this page suggests, that it does work anyway. (I really want the feature, so I hope that I (the user) is the problem here.)
    So, the suggested commands tell me, that the desired module seems not to exist on my system:
    # modprobe -a tp_smapi
    modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'tp_smapi': No such device or address
    # journalctl -b | grep "tp_smapi"
    Jan 14 15:51:30 hostname systemd-modules-load[144] Failed to insert 'tp_smapi': no such device or adress
    However, it is installed:
    $ pacman -Q tp_smapi
    tp_smapi 0.41-11
    I did some more research and found that this kind of error massages indeed occurs for unsupported systems. So, bad luck for me.
    Your error does indeed indicates that the module can't find the relevant *hardware*, so messing around with the module loading probably wonæt help. You could check the bios if the feature is disabled there though. Another thing you can try, if the module simply check some product id, is to add the id for your hardware. Else I would suggest poking upstream to get the hardware supported.

    Hey man have had the same issue.
    How did you go about solving it?

  • [Solved] Catalyst fails to load kernel module

    I have just been through the Catalyst install guide, I installed from the Vi0L0 repos rather than building myself.
    Everything appeared to go fine, however fglrx fails to load when I reboot. The xorg log contains;
    fglrx(0): atiddxDriScreenInit failed. Probably kernel module missing or incompatible
    fglrx(0): **********************************************************
    fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed
    fglrx(0): * kernel module (fglrx.ko) may be missing or incompatible
    fglrx(0): * 2D and 3D acceleration disabled
    fglrx(0): **********************************************************
    Is this recoverable? Or does this mean that the current Vi0L0 module has not been built for my kernel (3.11.5-1-ARCH)?
    Last edited by ~lynks (2013-11-03 16:16:00)

    This issue has now been resolved after the update to xorg 1.14
    lsmod | grep fglrx
    shows fglrx is not loaded, and:
    modprobe fglrx
    returns with;
    modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'fglrx': Exec format error
    Does that indicate a 32/64 bit issue?

  • ExFAT kernel module not in community but FUSE exFAT is

    Just wondering if a FUSE driver in community means a kernel module also belongs there. Seems like the rationale for kernel module support by official repos is stronger unless I am missing something.
    AUR exFAT kernel modules
    Official community exFAT for FUSE

    Thanks Scimmia. Any Samsung controversy now seems irrelevant? Their code is GPL. Thanks for the history.
    The patent issue is orthogonal. The old FAT patent expires in 2013 and was already beaten down. I don't know about exFAT but see TechRights.
    Given Microsoft's cross-patent agreements with Apple, Samsung, and the whole tech universe, it's likely wrong to say you need a Microsoft device. You need a device from any vendor with a license. Like motherboard manufacturers....cell phone manufacturers....etc. etc. etc. etc.
    Be that as it may or not, I think you're right that any patent implications would affect the FUSE suite as much as the kernel one? Therefore my original argument stands, I would say. Arch should give official support to the kernel module (since it already does the FUSE version which is inferior quality by definition).
    Thanks

  • Proper method for building kernel modules? [solved]

    I am attempting to build a custom kernel module for a PCI express interface to an FPGA.  However, I seem to be running into some issues with getting the standard kernel module makefile to work correctly.  Here is my makefile:
    # object files to build
    obj-m += nnic.o
    nic-objs += nnic_driver.o
    all:
    make -C /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/build M=$(pwd) modules
    clean:
    make -C /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/build M=$(pwd) clean
    However, the first time I ran 'make', I got this output:
    make -C /lib/modules/3.14.1-1-ARCH/build M= modules
    make[1]: Entering directory '/usr/lib/modules/3.14.1-1-ARCH/build'

    I have the linux-headers package installed.  I do not need to build the whole kernel, only this small module.  What am I missing here?  What is the correct procedure for this?

    Sigh, found the problem.  Should be $(PWD) and not $(pwd) in my makefile.

  • Automatically build kernel module after kernel update

    Hello. Everytime kernel is updated, my wifi drivers don't work. I need to use this to get my adapter working: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/8192cu-dkms/ .
    After kernel update, I have to manually reinstall the package, so the kernel module gets rebuilt. Is there any way to make it automatic?

    I noticed it, but your script doesn't run at all when I type `mkinitcpio -p linux`. And wifi still works after reboot. Same for graphics driver, it has a hook at shutdown, that rebuilds its module after kernel update, it haven't run too and graphics driver works. It's like 'mkinitcpio -p linux' does nothing to the system.

  • CIFS Kernel module for Ideatab S6000L

    I just bought an Ideatab S6000L and I tried to mount my share as a local folder using CIFS. After some research it seems some modules are missing. I tried with modules from other version (for example in this topic http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Idea-Android-based-Tablets/CIFS-Kernel-Module-can-t-mount-CIFS-share-on-...
    It didn't work and I don't know how to build thoses modules for this specific version, could someone provide me thoses modules or help me to build them please?

    Thank you for your response
    I'm thinking of returning my tablet, this is something I really needed.
    So in summary, all of the lenovo tablet have this problem and the module can't be built on some of them?

  • Kernel module loading error. "relocation error: R_AMD64_32"

    I am in the process of porting a stable sparc64 kernel module to amd64 and have run into a road block. When the module loads on amd64 I recieve many errors like the one below.
    Jun 25 10:35:09 earth genunix: [ID 370954 kern.notice] symbol :
    Jun 25 10:35:09 earth genunix: [ID 780480 kern.notice] value 0xffffffffc008b708 does not fit
    Jun 25 10:35:09 earth genunix: [ID 286029 kern.notice] relocation error: R_AMD64_32:
    I using Studio 12 and I have used many combinations of compiler flags the latest of which is:
    -m64 -KPIC -fast -xmodel=medium
    Nothing to this point has solve the problem.
    Have I missed something in the documentation? Are there other compiler flags for amd64 that I am not aware of?
    Thanks

    unfortunately, that's the case now. I forgot to say about it:
    CC -fast -xtarget=opteron -m64 -xmodel=medium -KPIC -DLEVEL=0 ...thanks for your reply,

  • Compiling kernel modules against 2.6.15-ARCH

    I recently migrated to arch from Gentoo and Debian for a new webserver, and couldn't be happier. The system has worked great so far, and RAID card aside, I haven't had a single problem with Arch. The base system is easy to configure, and there is actually a list of config files in the install docs. Pacman is an absolute dream... Debian's apt is willfully a year out of date, and Gentoo's portage is a convulted and time-consuming nightmare.
    In fact, Gentoo's unprompted and unwarranted removal of libstdc++ was the final straw.
    However, one thing that confuses me about arch is the kernel build system.
    I have an Areca ARC-1210 PCIe to SATAII hardware RAID card, but I can't figure out how to build the driver as a kernel module. If I compile it on its own it fails with literally hundreds of errors, almost like there's a header missing.
    The instructions that came with the source want me to add a
    config SCSI_ARCMSR
    tristate "ARECA SATA RAID HOST Controller"
    depends on PCI && SCSI
    help
    block to /usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi/Kconfig (which I did: it shows up in menuconfig), and a
    obj-$(CONFIG_SCSI_ARCMSR) += arcmsr/
    line to /usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi/Makefile.
    However, arch doesn't seem to have the recursive makefile kernel build system that I and the good people at Areca used to.
    How can I build this driver, preferably as a module, against my 2.6.15 kernel?
    There are also precompiled x86 modules availible for Red Hat, SuSE, and TurboLinux. Assuming one of them is built against a reasonably current kernel, could they be used safely? I normally wouldn't try such a thing, but time is of the essence, and the RAID card seems to have such simple dependencies, I imagine it unlikely that all three major distros would have SCSI and PCI drivers patched to incompatability.

    having said all that ...do u think compiling the kernel myself would provide any improvment for me???? ( I am haveing freezing and instablility problems..ive used 3 of the arch kernels....check out my thread  titled Arch Instable.. (please)
    p.s.  btw Welcome
