Misspelled Mobile Home Directory
Hello,
I have setup our staff computer with all MHD's, then I am informed that the list of names I was given included a misspelling. What is the best way to rename the WGM account, and the local MHD on the MacBook. Changing long names seems to be easy enough, but I'd really like to get short names changed also.

Leopard Client Tiger server mobile home directory not working... hmmm
Mobile home directory is not working for my leopard clients with my tiger server.
I can log in via the Apple server account that is set for mobile.
On my tiger clients it prompts me to confirm my mobile account on log in and everything works fine if i unplug the network cable.
on my leopard clients no prompt at log in. so i go to account under system prefs and see that the account says mobile..and i click on make mobile account in the account pane in system prefs says will reboot and make account.. prompts for password for mobile account i put it in and then it says there was an error in making mobile account and then it takes me back to the main log in window.
every client i have on leopard does this...
am i missing something?

Mobile Home Directory: Setting a relative location for various sub-nets
Question Summary:
1) Is it possible to define a home directory for mobile account users that is relative to the host's subnet?
2) How does one accomplish #1 if possible?

Setup
Users access hosts on three LAN networks connected through the WAN via Branch-Office VPN connections (persistant VPN tunnels that connect our LANs)
If User1 from LAN1 travels to LAN2, User1 has difficulty working, because the mobile account definition points to a host on LAN1 for HomeDirectory syncing, so all files are synced across a slow (5Mb/s) connection shared by all other users. For some users (The CEO, for example), this sync entails transferring Gigs of personal data, so the Mobile Sync across the VPN literally takes several days, if it completes at all.
My ideal setup would allow User1 from LAN1 to access a host at a relative location as apposed to an absolute location. In other words, if LAN1 has the home folder at 192.168.76.23:/HomeFolders/User1, then when User1 moves to LAN2, the HomeFolder becomes 192.168.78.23:/HomeFolders/User1. Regardless the subnet, the User account would be defined in such a way that the HomeFolder would be sought at 192.168.X.23:/HomeFolders/shortUserId
These home folders between the hosts 192.168.76.23 and 192.168.78.23 on LAN1 and LAN2, respectively, could be kept in sync during off hours so that at the beginning of each shift, all files are in all three locations ready for local use, fast access, and more importantly, fast home-syncing during the work day.
Equipment
OS X Yosemite running on various iMac and MacBook hardware configurations.
OS X Server 4 running OD replicas and local DNS's on each LAN.
Ample space for redundant data storage on all networks.
Question
How do I define a HomeDirectory as a relative location to the Mobile Account Users host machine or host machine IP address?
Alternatively, is there a way that I can define a HomeDirectory using a Fully Qualified Domain Name so that I can use the local DNS server to force the redirect?

Using the same Bonjour Computer Name
On one test, I tried to trick the system by setting the name of the HomeDirectory computer to the same name on all networks. The thought behind this is that, when looking at the HomeDirectory path, the address is defined by the computer name, so if the local computer name matches, the system will automatically point to the host that is on the current LAN, as apposed to the host of the same name on the previous LAN.
This failed due to the fact that the system providing the HomeDirectory storage is the same system that is providing OD replica services, and OD replication requires that each system have a unique name.Hi,
Yes my home directory is set
more /etc/passwd
sfsys1d:x:301:201:sys1 dev sftp user:/interfaces/dev/system1:/usr/bin/csh
when i log in they go to this directory, through a shell and through ftp ( haven't checked sftp yet)
However i can still go up directories and see what is in the directories above
the permissions are set as below

I have tried various other permission 700, 710, 740 etc and they all give different results but not the correct one.
The best I have managed to get so far is that they cannot list the files in the other directories, however if they know the names they can still go to them, this also didn;t work in the windows ftp client, as it just showed the file/dirs anyway.

Mobile home directory issues on updated clients
As I am testing out leopard server, I found that virtually every service isn't quite ready for prime time. That is at least in the advanced mode, which is strange as it that was the only mode the old server versions came in.
I am wondering if anyone has been able to do the following (in advanced mode only):
1. In WGM, set the mobility preference background sync of a user to an interval greater than 1 hour (let's say every 4 hours).
Then use a client (maybe even upgraded from Tiger)and sync in that same interval.
All the clients I have tested still sync to the previously set 1 hour intervals and when going into the mobility settings (System Preferences: Accounts: Mobile Account: Settings), all other intervals are grayed out. In WGM, mobility settings are set to merge with clients.
2. Too bad that the Directory Utility auto discovery tool doesn't work for advanced mode servers, so it has to added manually, but I have not been able to get SSL to work. Kerberos works fine and it's all I need but I still like the client configured for SSL.

Mobile home sync causing log cruft
Has anyone seen this error in system.log when someone is syncing from a mobile home directory?

From what I understand, there isn't anything to be concerned about, this is the OS doing cleanup, but it is a bit worrysome that my logs are being filled with this.I, too, have had the same problem since April 27, 2009 - that's when my last sync date is set.
However, when I look at both my iCals on my Macbook and my iMac and my iTouch, everything is synced.
And when I click on Advanced, the date is different than in my sync icon in the finder bar.
Anyone have any info on this? -
FileSync Failure On Mobile Account Home Directory

iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2012, OS X 10.9.5, MobileAccount
Network
Server exists on a foreign subnet. Client binds to OD Replica on local network. Authentication works without issue. SSH connections to Server work flawlessly. SCP can be used to move files across the network without issue.
Situation
User account automatically creates a mobile profile on any system used. This is set in Workgroup Manager for all users of this User's type.
The local machine has successfully created a Mobile Account for the user, and User is able to use the machine without complication, except that User complains none of his personal files are present.
Home Sync reports last sync as being "Incomplete".
Attempted Corrections
The log file had indicated that the synchronization process was being cancelled by the next synchronization which started automatically after 20 minutes. To correct this problem, I changed the HomeSync settings to start only on "Manual" requests.
After this change, I observed that the log file that a file was missing. I ran SCP to duplicate the home folder on the local machine, replacing the home folder that had been already created. I no longer find the missing file issue.
I found an article suggesting that deleting the .FileSync folder from the local and remote home folders would force the system to re-evaluate the status of the sync. I deleted these folders in order to allow the system to recreate them. The system continues to have Incomplete home sync processes.
Help Required
I am unable to interpret the remaining EXCEPTION lines in the log file. I appreciate any help deciphering the next steps in fixing the Home Sync process. I appreciate any tips or advice on what causes Home Sync to fail in these situations, and if any person has information on how to create a local mirror that would be referenced for the HomeSync rather than the main server, that information would be greatly appreciated.

Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button

AD mobile account with local home directory

I have set up Tiger workstations to authenticate to AD, I am forcing a local home dir. Everything works great. I want to do the same thing for Tiger laptop users with mobile accounts. The problem is that OS X creates a second home directory outside of /Users based on attributes from my AD schema. Just like with the non-mobile users, I want to ignore all home dir attributes from AD and just use the user's home dir that is in /Users. So the question is, how can you use a mobile account and force a local home dir with Apple's AD plugin??????Yes, I know how to click buttons in the gui, that does not fix the issue. The issue is that the Active Directory schema at my company includes extended attributes from the RFC 2307 schema. Apple's AD plugin does not know how to handle this extended schema especially when using mobile accounts.
Apple's AD plugin reads these unix attributes from AD and thinks it knows what to do but ends up causing more problems then if there were no unix attributes at all.
Since this post, I have opened a ticket with Apple. They were able to recreate the problem in their lab with their AD server. The only work around is to create a custom ActiveDirectory.plist file that forces the Mac to ignore what AD is telling it.
This solution works unless the ActiveDirectory.plist file is deleted or corrupted. This problem will only become worse once Microsoft includes all of the RFC 2307 schema in their next service pack of Win 2003 server. -
I want to be able to setup a user mobile account, with the home directory stored locally and not synced to the server. What is the best way to do this? I am running Server 10.6 with 10.6 clients. Open Directory will be used to authenticate and manage preferences. Also, this one account will be used simultaneosly in a computer lab setting, so files will be stored locally in the client, hence the need to NOT sync to the server. Any Ideas?

My Windows Server 2003 AD accounts have roaming profiles and user home directories stored in different locations on Windows Server 2003 servers. How do I prevent my MacOS tiger clients from copying the local user profiles for AD mobile accounts to the respective remote home directories?
This unwanted behavior is quite similar to using Windows 9x clients in similar AD environment.I do need to automount the network home directory but do not desire to have it sync with the local home directoy. I disabled the "create mobile account at login" option and enabled "force local home directory on startup disk" and "use unc path from active directory ..." and these appear to have resolved the problem. Unfortunately the network home directory no longer automounts, nor do network accounts show up at the logon prompt (strangely enough, they can be configured to autologin.)

More than one network home directory? (newbie question)
I have a brand new shiny XServer for a small school. They wanted their Macs managed and secured so I eagerly started moving ahead with it. Now, because of the specific file sharing requirements of the school (teachers want access to student accounts and files for homework and such) I created a standard, by-the-book Network Home folder. Then I thought about it, and I shared another directory as a Network User Home folder. And now none of my networked user accounts can log in. They all give me "can't log in, there is an error".
Is what I did possible? Allowed? Recommended? Discouraged? Can you actually define two separate Network User Home folders on the same server, and then assign different users to different home folders? My server crapped out and now I may have to wipe/reinstall the whole thing to fix it.
Does anybody have any experience with home folders like that?

Thanks.Each user can have one and only one home directory, network or local. (Yes, even if you use Mobile Accounts or Portable Homes each account still has one home directory. You just have multiple copies of the user account and each copy has one home.)
You can have multiple share points that serve as home directory share points. In other words, not all of your users' homes need to be stored in the same place. By "network home directory share point," we mean a shared folder (share point) that has a corresponding dynamic automount record in the directory domain. The share point mounts at /Network/Servers/servername/path/to/sharepoint, and users defined in the directory domain can have their network homes defined there.
If you want to grant a group of teachers (let's call it teachers for simplicity) read/write access to student home directories, I'd suggest the following strategy:
1. Create two network home directory share points - one to house the students' homes and one to house the teachers' homes. For this example, let's say that the student home directory share point is located at /Volumes/Disk1/StudentHomes.
2. Create home directories for each student as you normally would.
3. Then add an ACL that allows members of the teachers group to read/write within the student home directory share point. For our example:

read,execute,writeattr,writeextattr,delete,deletechild,add_file,addsubdirectory,\
write,append,fileinherit,directoryinherit" /Volumes/Disk1/StudentHomes.
4. Now teachers simply navigate to /Network/Servers/yourservername/path.../StudentHomes/student's name and dig around to find what they want. (The teachers have read/write control of all student home directories now.)
5. When your teachers find it a little inconvenient to dig around in each student's home, suggest the following alternative: Simply create a share point to which students have read-only access and teachers can read/write. Within that share point, create "turn-in" folders for each teacher or class, and give students write-only (drop box) permission to the sub-folder. You could get more granular than this simple example where all students can turn anything into any teacher's "turn-in" folder, though.

Mountain Lion Server: Network users Home directory mount problems
I am having several problems with my server after a latest name change of the server via Server.app. (A first name change made problems, after that I have been trying to repair, changing the name a few times more. With latest name change, I also changed the server name itself from Foo to Bar while changing domain name from domain.com to bar.domain.com after which I repaired DNS so it covers the whole domain.com domain).
The users in the Network directory think their home directory is on afp://domain.com/Users, but the server is now called bar.domain.com. /Network/Servers/bar.domain.com does not exist on the server. Client machines (with mobile home directories) are now able to sync, because I added an A record for domain.com to DNS (not nice, but does the job, or more specifically that job). Also on the clients, I can go to a SHARED folder in Finder with the name Bar and go to Users and see al the home directories there. But:

So, on the server looking for folder ~user does not work. It wants to go to afp://domain.com/Users/user but that is unreachable.
Any tips on what I can do except do a clean rebuild of the server (again)?
(One of the obvious problems is that the Realm of OD is still called foo.domain.com, the origin of my problems has been that the first name change from foo.domain.com to domain.com (ill-advised, I know) failed — partly).
What I'd like to know is:
- where is it determined which servers end up in /Network/Servers?Som additional info:
Other machines can mount afp://foo.domain.com/, afp://domain.com/ and afp://bar.domain.com/, but the server itself cannot mount them via Finder. -
WGM Home directory full path not populating properly
I'm setting up WGM with mobility as all of my network users are on laptops. For some reason some of the users are working and others not. When I try to log in with some I just get told that the user couldn't log on because an error occured. As far as I can work out this is because the home directory for the user on the network can't be found and so a local one can't be created either.
The only difference I can see between the users (bearing in mind this is a brand new network set up so I haven't made many changes) is that for the users that do work when I select the SharePoint I want to use under the home tab in user settings, the Full Path has ...er ...well the full path in it: /network/servers/mynetwork/Volumes/myharddrive/myfolder/myuser
whereas ones that don't work just have the folder name: myuser
This not only happens when I use the auto populated list as well as when I create one from scratch.You're right, DNS implementation in Leopard server is very poor, especially considering how critical it is.
Time Machine for every user is a bit of a tricky one - I've been thrashing this one out in another thread, and there is an answer, but it's not ideal.

The answer on how to do it is at the end of the thread, but make sure Time Machine isn't used as the only method of Disaster Recovery on a corporate network, it's really only good for a useful extra.
As for an internal and external DNS server, the answer I'm afraid is "not really". The way you have it set up is pretty good, from a redundancy point of view. However, if you have to use an external DNS server, it's always going to be slower, because of the extra distance over slower links that the DNS request has to travel.
Bear in mind, it has to go through your router and/or firewall, all the way out to a busy DNS server somewhere out on the net (probably over a number of routers on the way), then it has to come back the same way before your client can actually resolve the URL to an IP address.
Compare that to internal where it has to travel a matter of metres over a (I assume) 100mbps network to a DNS server that's not processing very many requests.
The only workaround I could suggest would be to employ a second DNS server (perhaps a proxy?) within your network assuming you can separate it from whatever causes your primary DNS server to go down. The costs aren't prohibitive - you could do it on a Mac Mini + cost of a second Leopard Server license.

Why is mobile home syncing so slow?
I am running 10.8.3 on the clients and 10.8.3 with Server 2.2.1 on the Server. I have turned server-side file tracking on with
sudo serveradmin settings info:enableFileSyncAgent = yes
But the full story I got that from (http://krypted.com/mac-os-x/enable-server-side-file-tracking-in-os-x-mountain-li on-server/) does add:
Note that TCP port 2336 needs to be open for the FileSync Agent to connect over ssh on port 2336 to the server; however, ssh doesn’t need to be enabled on the standard port 22 but mobile users must have access to the SSH SACL.
- How do I recognize the SSH SACL in Workgroup manager so I can add the mobile users to it?
- SInce we have a different firewall than the 10.6 setup, how do I add port 2336?
- Is that the reason? Or is there also something on the client side?

Checking with a port scan by Network Utility I found out that the PF firewall is blocking port 2336 when connected from the clients. From the server itself both 127.0.0.1 and the real IP address of the server accept incoming connections on port 2336 (which is what I had checked previously, but that was a mistake, 192.168.x.x. is routed to 127.0.0.1 I guess and thus not blocked).
Now I just have to find out how to open up port 2336 from the local IP range for clients.
And I'm wondering how much of a breach it would be to open up port 2336 in my router and forward it to the server. How safe is Apple's use of SSH here? Is it certificate protected? -
I could definitely use some help! I work for a school that's currently running a 10.6.8 Open Directory server. We use mobile homes throughout the school so students and teachers log in on any machine using their OD credentials to access their accounts. We currently use Workgroup Manager to manage preferences on these accounts. As examples of what we do, students will have restrictions in System Preferences, everyone has specific apps on their docks, etc. This summer we're looking to upgrade our servers and client machines to 10.9.
I've been through the 10.6.8->10.8 OD upgrade with my previous employer and there we decided not to use Profile Manager and just use WGM. We found the preferences were a bit buggy under 10.8 (mostly issues with signed apps, but some sync issues as well). So in my current role we'd like to rip off the WGM bandaid and move into profile management. We're looking at using Airwatch as an MDM, which creates user and machine profiles just like OS X Server's Profile Manager does. I understand that mobile homes are still supported in 10.9, but what I'm unsure of is how the user managed preferences work.
How does the profile sync up with the user? Can profiles be done by group? Do all machines on campus need multiple user profiles installed so they can discern between teachers and different ages of students? Anything else I'm missing?

Network user can't see local home directory
Hi there,
I have a Mac Mini running Lion Server with Directory Services turned on. I've been using this to allow network users to log into Lion clients, as well as set up mobile accounts. This has been working fine.
Now I've just created a new network user for use with a Mountain Lion client and have experienced some strangeness with this new user's home directory. The binding to the directory was fine, and the credentials for the network user were fine. However, when logged in, this new user has his home drive mapped to /Network/Servers/<servername>/Users/<username> rather than the expected /Users/<username>. This has bad side-effects. For instance, Chrome tries to save downloads to the server instead of locally.
What I can't work out is why the home directory isn't pointing to a local location. The other users (on Lion) have the same home directories defined in their Open Directory profiles. The only difference is the new user is on Mountain Lion, but I don't think this has any bearing to the problem.
Can anyone offer some advice?

Long story short, the guys at the Bar couldn't figure it out. The user definitions in Open Directory seemed ok, but they still couldn't work out why no local home directories were being created. Not sure if this helps, but in trouble-shooting, we also discovered that trying to login with a network user on the problematic laptop didn't work when the server wasn't on the network. It's as if the server is required to be present.
Anyway, the case has been referred to the business team, which is supposed to have more expertise with OS X Server.
