Mixing Down Multiple Tracks - Question

Hi.
Is it possible to mix down 2 or more tracks into 1 single track?
I'm doing some soundtrack work, working on the multi-track editor to a video I imported. I have a constant background ambiance that I made using the multi-track editor and the apple loops.
Is there a way I can mix the 3+ tracks that make up this ambiance down into 1 single track? Thus giving me less tracks to worry about (and less clutter) when editing additional foley sound effects etc.. over the ambiance?
Any help would be appreciated

Export your mix. In the After Export drop-down you should find *Add to New Tracks in session* (or something like that)

  • MIXING DOWN VIDEO TRACKS

I am ready to out put my project which has multiple video layers. I know I can nest my effect layers but is there a way to mix down all of my layers making one video layer with all of the effects rendered?

Then there's still no need to "mixdown" the video.
For DVD, the best method is to export a self-contained or reference movie (File->Export->QuickTime Movie). Note that if your Sequence isn't already fully rendered, it may take some time. Also make sure you include chapter markers if needed and that you do NOT recompress all frames.
Use the QuickTime Movie in Compressor and choose the appropriate DVD preset.
Once Compressor is done, import the resulting .m2v video file and the .ac3 audio file into DVD-SP for authoring and burning.
For going to tape, fully render the Timeline then then perform a 'Print-to-Video' or just hit record on your DV recorder and hit the space bar on your Mac keyboard (assuming you're working in DV).

  • I record multiple tracks (3-5) from real instruments and vocals. I want to send these files to a collaborator to add more tracks to, but Garageband wants to mix these down (which I don't want). How can I send the multiple tracks files to my friend?

I record multiple tracks of real instruments and vocals wth Garage Band. I want to share the file with a collaborator so he can add another instrument or two. I have not found a way to do this without the process mixing down the tracks. I don't want them mixed down like when I send them to Itunes. Also I can't seem to just attach a file directly to an email for sending purposes. I thought I saw a method to do this with software instruments, but how do you do it with real instruments? I've tried every process on the "export" list to try to accomplish this, without success. Thanks for any breakthrough advice on this!

As isteveus said - for large projects uploading to a server would be best.
Also I can't seem to just attach a file directly to an email for sending purposes.
But for completeness's sake , you cou can mail a project, if you ctrl-click the project and use "Compress xxx.band". This will compress the project and create a zip file, that you can mail (if it is not too large). But ask your friend for the maximal file size allowed as a mail attachment.
But whichever method you use to share your project, be sure you include all loops and instruments, if your friend does not have the same JamPacks installed. You can bundle the loops into the project by saving it as an archive. "File > Save as" and check the "Archive Project" option.
If this option should be disabled, you can force it to become active by editing your project slightly. It is only available, if the project needs saving.

  • Mixing down tracks within a GB project

Hi Guys. Here's a question that I cannot work out (perhaps because it's not possible??)
How do you mix down 3 or 4 tracks into one, as we used to do in the days analogue mixing. eg, I have a nearly completed project, but decide to add a string quartet composed on 4 tracks - one for each instrument, but would like to mix it down to one track to make it easier to move/copy etc

Make sure to keep a copy of your orchestral GarageBand project. You may not be happy with the mix when everything is completed.
There should be no reason to mix down the tracks, however. GarageBand 3 will automatically make a Software track into a Real track by just "locking" the track. This will save you CPU cycles if this is an issue. That way you will still have control over the mix parameters.

  • Problems Exporting multiple tracks / Mix down - Big Probs!

    Hi Guys,
I apologise for the large holes in my knowledge in advance.
I have asked a similar question before but I got a screen grab that does not appear in my version of STP (I use Version 2.0 I think, apologies, I am at work so can't be totally sure)
I have created a 30 minute project that goes accross 3 tracks with various bits of cut audio.
If I wan't to create one single MP3 of the whole piece I really struggle. The Option to create 'MP3' is greyed out, and the only option that creates the seems to create the single 'submix' file, is the option to export all tracks, buses and submixes etc.
When I go to open the WAV though it crashes, it also doesn't list a duration (which i think is why it is crashing).
I managed to export it at all using the lowest rates in the export menu but when I open the submix wav, it plays it full mixdown correctly but with about 8 empty tracks(?) in the main edit / playing window (not the session style window with all the tracks, buses etc)
I then can't convert the wav to an Mp3 (perhaps because it is not a standard wav) which means curtains for my podcast at present.
I am so sorry for the drivel that I have just written, If it does make sense I would be so glad if you could help me out.
How best to Mix Down my project?
    Many thanks.
    Dave.

    Hi there,
My bad, the master mix was there, it is at the top but seperate so i must have missed it or thought it was the title of the menu, anyway, thanks for your help on that one.
The surround sound issue still bugs me but I changed the setting in 'Multitrack' and it seemed to work, as for the submix track, i see that at the bottom of the project (along with busses?) and there doesn't appear to be any sound file in there, i'll take another look and see if the settings need changing.
Thanks so much for your help as it was really doing my head in (along with the random crashes and slight movements in levels that I didn't touch)
It's fixed now so thank you very much indeed!!!
Here is the file if you wanna listen to it (shamelss plug), it;s a bit weird.

  • Mixing down - lost MIDI tracks

    Hi
I have just started using GarageBand over the past couple of months. I have figured out all about locking tracks etc - or so I thought. I can get all the tracks to run fine (real audio and MIDI). The only thing is that when I export to iTunes, a couple of the MIDI tracks can be lost. Why???
It all seems quite random. My MIDI keyboard is connected. And all the tracks are locked for mixing down. (Did I need to have the keyboard connected at the moment when I locked the tracks, maybe?) The funny thing is, on some songs I am hearing all the tracks, MIDI included.
    So, baffled...

You don't need to have the keyboard connected for exporting the mix: and you don't need the tracks to be locked - that is to make it easier for the CPU to handle the load with a lot of tracks.
As to the missing tracks, forgive me for asking, but are you sure you didn't click the mute button instead of the lock button? (We've all done things like that! - and it's worth starting with the basics). Anyway, try a mix without locking the tracks - perhaps that's the problem, and, as I say, there's no need.

  • I made a project with multiple tracks and had it all panned and mixed.  Now it's only playing in the right speaker.  Not even regestering a left side in the master volume?  What happened, how can I get both sides back?

    Thank you for that info.
For video, the codec is MPEG-4 Video (XVID) and for audio it says MPEG Audio Layer 1/2/3 (mpga).
There are two issues with that file:
The first is the Xvid CODEC (not meant for editing), and then the MPEG Audio/MPGA. I would convert that file, to something that is more editable.
    Good luck,

  • Do you mix down to two tracks to master song?

When I would master a song using Sonar I would mix down the song to two tracks and master on the two tracks. Now that I am using Logic Pro x I am not seeing anyone talk about mixing down to two tracks.  So I am wondering if everyone is doing their mastering on the full song or if they are actually doing on two tracks. I am using Ozone 5 and wanted to know what everyone was doing before I started.
    Thanks

I'm old school, I never master in the DAW, always mix down to a stereo mix and then master that. I find it far easier to get a good mix, when not worrying about mastering, it's also what I'm comfortable with.  I master using a PC with Soundforge, again, that's what I'm used to, my Mac Pro and PC are linked (networked) via a high speed cable modem so it's easy to transfer files back and forth.

  • Multitrack Mix Down Question

I use the multitrack view to perform cross fades when I am patched a recording.  I notice that when I ultimately export the resulting file via audio mix down that the overall levels of the recordings decrease.  I am not talking about the parts of the recording that I have cross faded.  I am referring to the untouched parts.  Are the other settings that I need to be aware of so this doesn't happen?

    dminches wrote:

    Only one...
If you go to Preferences>Multitrack and change the pan law default setting from -3dB center to L/R cut Log, your mix will come out 3dB higher, and it's almost certainly this that you've noticed.
Important note: after you've changed the setting, you have to restart Audition for it to take effect.

  • Question about cropping multiple tracks at the same time

Ok, here is the situation. My band jams reguarly, and I am recording 8 tracks concurrently.... each instrument gets their own mic/input.... typical band fare.
The recording will last a solid 45-60 minutes before we break. In the meantime, there is plenty of downtime, and multiple songs.
After the jam, I like to cut out the crap, bad takes, etc....
I do this by editing the waveform of each track individually, selecting the 'good region'.... copying the section ... and pasting into a new track... I repeat this 8 times... once for each track....
I then mute the original 8 tracks, move all the clips to timecode 0 and export to disk....
Needless to say, this is very, very time consuming, and I would like some input about a better way to do this.
Is it possible to select the same region across multiple tracks and copy/paste them into several new tracks? Or is it possible to define the 'playable region' of a larger region so that when I export, I am only exporting the region I am interested in?
Ultimately, I want to produce an exported .m4a for each 'good take' which is nothing more than a subset of the larger 60 minute take....

Have you tried selecting all tracks, then split at the beginning and ending of the "good take" then copy and paste it into a new GB file?

  • Advice Needed: Filtering/Adding effects to multiple tracks

I'm writing a dance song, and at one point would like to apply a few filtering sweeps on selected drum tracks.
Which is the best way to do it? Is it to bounce down the tracks into an audio file, then apply the effects onto that file by itself, or is it better to route the multiple tracks to an effects bus?
I have been trying using a bus, but have found that as soon as I route the tracks to the bus, the is a change in the sound quality of the track (louder and sometimes slightly distorted), even without any plugins on the bus. Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks.

How are you routing to a bus? If you are just using sends, then what's happeing is that the individual channels are going to the master output, and also being sent to a bus that is also going to the master output - this everything sent to that bus will get louder.
If you want to send a bunch of channels directly to a bus for insert processing, then change each channel's output to the bus, rather than the main output, so the individual channels only go to the mix via the bus, and not directly.
Or are you doing something different to that?

  • Controlling Multiple track volumes by moving only one fader???

I have a 4 part harmony, 4 vocals on 4 separate tracks. I have the volume mix of the 4 vox tracks exactly how i want them to sound together. Is there any way to lock them to each other so i can move one fader to change the volume of all 4 in unison? it's getting annoying changing each track by .2db at a time to try and get the right level for the harmony as a whole. thanks in advance.

Similar question, can volume automation of a track be moved in unison with the volume of other tracks in a group? example: 3 vocal tracks in a group, all have volume automation data and all are the perfect levels with regards to one another, but i want to lower the entire vocal mix, having all the automation points for each track change by the same amount. thanks again in advance.
Jim Frazier's suggestion works great for this: route the three tracks to a bus/aux track, and use that fader to adjust the master vocal level. It's also possible to group/select all automation points at once across multiple tracks, but I think you'll find using a fader will be easier for this.

  • Can you make a multiple track selection without using a modifier key?

i think this is mainly a wishlist kind of question as i'm pretty certain it's not possible. while the track tool can be accessed with a single key command, in order to select multiple tracks, you have to hold down the shift key. in FCP, the track tool had several options. for instance, TTTT would select all tracks forward but you could map this to a single key. so many things about premiere are great, but certain keyboard shortcuts are sadly lacking.

yes, really. if i do something more than 5 times in any given day then i'd like to do it as efficiently and quickly as possible. as an editor, i use the select all tracks forward command in FCP at least 20 times a day, but probably more. so even though it's not a "big deal", it does slow down my workflow when i have to hit 2 keys. it's not a big deal to go to the post office but it really makes life easier when the mail carrier stops at my house.

  • Is there a recommended tutorial for editing multiple track regions?

I've been used to DP where you define a region of time on the sequence, select all the tracks you want to affect, then proceed to do any number of things with those tracks..like, maybe nudge them one way or another to line up a punch in more precisely. For example, I was tracking in another studio where they were using Nuendo. The session was laying down 8 tracks of drums to a stereo mix of the main tune. When the drummer wanted to go back and punch in a few bars, the engineer could grab the in and out of all 8 tracks of the punch in and easily line up the in point to a precise location, as well as trim the out.
Maybe I need to break out the manual again, but in Logic, I can set the locators, but only see the button where I can "cut" that selection, and am not sure if it's possible to move all the tracks around.
    Anyway...thanks for any direction here.

    Hello JAYUSBEEUS,
"iMovie is meant to work with firewire connected miniDV camcorders"
HDD camcorders record in MPEG format which is not accepted by iMovie. If you were to buy one of these cameras, you would have to convert all your recorded video to DV format before being able to edit it.
If you want to be able to edit your videos on your mac, your best choice is a MiniDV camcorder. Sony, Canon, and Panasonic have several models in your pricerange. My personal favorite is the Panasonic GS500, a 3-chip camcorder with very good pic quality at a reasonable price.
