Mixing Panasonic HPX170 footage with Canon 7d

I just did a shoot with these 2 different cameras, shooting the HPX170 at 720p 24, which is a 960x720 frame size.  The 7D was shooting at 24p also, but at 1920x1080.  I downloaded the Canon software which allows FCP to transcode the 7D footage from H.264 as you bring it in via Log and Transfer.  I didn't see any options in how this gets brought in but after having done so see that it transcoded to Apple Pro Res 4444 1920x1080 square pixels.  I'm pretty sure the Panasonic does not use square pixels. 
In any case, when I edit the HPX footage into a timeline set for the 7D specs, it shows up and looks good, but it won't play.  It won't render either. 
I have two questions:
1.  What is the best way to bring in the footage from each camera so that I can edit them in one sequence with minimal or no rendering?
2.  Is there a sequence setting that will best handle the 2 different types of footage as I've imported them already?

HQ is still overkill for the footage.  Canon DSLR is 8-bit...ProRes HQ is used for 10-bit formats.  DVCPRO HD is 8-bit as well.  Stick to vanilla ProRes 422.  You'll save yourself a lot of hard drive space (HQ is 50% larger than ProRes 422).
FCP will upscale the DVCPRO HD footage to fill the frame.  As for it being "finishing quality," all depends on how you will be finishing.  Software upconversion in FCP is OK, but not the best, hardware scaling is.  But how do you hardware scale tapeless footage for use in a tapeless footage timeline?  It will look fine.

  • Problems importing footage with Canon GL-2

    I'm brand new to Mac & FCP, migrating from Casablanca after 8+ years.
    I've had no luck using the "Capture Batch" option, so I've reverted to "Capture Now"...after reading lots of issues with the gl2. "Capture Now", though very time consuming, seems to work okay. I'll need to break the clips for editing. I'm thinking wedding recepiton (with lots of rec/pause). Using "Mark" then "DV Start/Stop Detect" works nicely, but when I trim the clips and put them in the timeline with a transition (such as page peel), the clip somehow continues past the end. For example, as the page is peeling back, the same piece of video is under the page...then it cuts to the next piece of footage, and continues the peel. FYI, all transitions do the same. I'm just using it as an example.
    However, if I trim the pieces of video and put them in the timeline instead of using the above proceedure, the transitions work perfectly. BUT, unless I use the method above, I'll have to scrub through hours of footage. The Casablanca has an "auto split" option. I dump the footage, hit the button, and end up with a bunch of perfectly cut clips. FCP has to have something similar...

  • Import failed with canon 6d footage after latest update

    After I updated to Final Cut X 10.0.8, I've been getting "Import Failed" messages during the import process when taking in footage from my Canon 6D
    The import process also seems to be going very slow (slower than usual)
    I've tried duplicating the SD card locally on the hard drive and re-importing, but have gotten the same results.
    If I click OK on the error dialogue box, the import will continue. but another box will pop up every 5 to 10 minutes or so
    Any ideas?

    Hey Russ, it actually works fine for me too the few times I've used it but I point it out as a common denominator with people who have trouble importing that way. Separating the .mov files into their own folder eliminates the camera and card reader, both much slower than just transfering files from a connected drive. But I'm doing newspaper video with Canon DSLRs - including 5D3 video, similar to 6D - almost daily where speed is of the essence and this is by far the most foolproof method I've come across.

    Hi. Quick question I am working with Panasonic GH3 footage shot using .MOV wrapper with their IPB 50mbps and All-Intra 72MBPS codecs and they are playing back in slow motion in Sg CC. The footage works fine in PP CC and I have no clue on how to fix it. Is this a bug or do I a have a setting wrong some place?

    Yes it turns red this is silly PP and AE have no problem with playback for these codecs. So it is indeed Sg not handling the codec correctly and not my system?
    What if I transcoded it to something else other than the previous what would you reccommend?
    I was going to transcode to ProRes but 5DtoRGB does not work on Windows with GH3 codecs.
    What is the correct time warp seting under clip properties? I screwed with it and forgot the default setting.
    Is there a way to reset Sg back to defaults settings globaly. I tried to many settings trying to fix the playback and may have left something in the wrong state.

  • Does anyone use Cineform Neoscene with Canon t2i footage and Premiere Elements 10?

    I'm wondering if its worth the $100.00 investment - not looking to spend more money but I really want to avoid the hassle I've had with other editing programs...... I will be using MOV H.264 footage from Canon Elph 500 and Canon t2i and looking ffor the easiest workflow and I came across this item and am wondering if people have used it.

    QT Pro can do Cut-and-Butt editing, and if that is all done, can Export without Retranscoding the footage.
    For much more than that, however, it lacks the capabilities.
    I do not know how well CineForm's NeoScene works with PrE, but before PrPro got full AVCHD native support, was very popular with the PrPro users. I cannot recall anyone having an issue with it, in that program, but might have missed a complaint, or two.

  • IMovie footage shot with Canon XL2 looks exports to m4v which looks lousy

    Video shot with Canon XL2, captured/imported into iMovie, it looks good in iMovie but when sharing it, it turns into m4v. Is this correct? Burned DVD in iDVD and it looks lousy. Isn't it supposed to be a mov file and not m4v?

    Does that require me to get rid of my 100 Hz or 200 Hz screen and exchange it for a 24 Hz screen?
    No.  This stuff looks equally good on CRT, Plasma or LCD.  (Though I do recommend leaving off such things as 100 Hz modes, as they have a tendency to produce the opposite effect, making film look more like video.)

    Where on earth did you get that idea?  Film is always shown theatrically as whole frames, whether 24 or 48 fps.

    Opening day for my first fiction project will be in my cousin's basement home theater, on a 9 foot screen with overhead projection.  I'll let you know when the release date approaches.  Better get your ticket early, though.  I'm expecting a line all the way around the shed, stretching clear to the garbage cans.

  • Can't Import HDV 24p with Canon HV30

    So I have the common and very low budget Canon HV30 HDV Camcorder, which has the ability to shoot in 24p. The only options I have when importing footage from a tape in Pr are HDV or DV, even though the Sequence format is HDV 1080 24p. After importing, the clips are at the standard HDV 1080 60i instead. Is there a way to capture the footage with the correct frame rate, or do I have to do a pull down removal in After Effects? :(

    Jim I know the difference between 24p and 24pa, sounds like Harm doesn't though explain it to him. All I was trying to get across is: Just because a dv tape can only record 60i doesn't mean you can get progressive frames from it.
    I did a google search and there a ton of info about dv30 and 24p. The whole point of that camera is that it shoots 24p, it's cheap and a lot of indie people use it to shoot shorts and even features. There's whole websites about that camera because it can shoot 24p. Click below.

  • Capturing footage from Canon XH A1

    Hi All -
    I'm a bit new to Final Cut Express but ran across the following problem:
    When I try to capture footage from my Canon XH A1 HD video camera, FCE does not recognize that there's any connection or that the camera is plugged into my MacBook Pro via the firewire cable. When I plug in my Sony VX2100 it does recognize this camera and I'm able to capture footage when I use that camera, but no luck with the Canon.
    Funny thing is, when I try to capture footage from my Canon using iMovie it recognizes the camera and captures the footage with no problem.
    Any idea why FCE is not recognizing this camera when iMovie does? Is there a setting on FCE that needs to be changed?

    Are you using the correct Easy Setup?
    Normally it should be HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 (or i60 if you are using NTSC).
    I believe your Canon is an HDV camera whilst your Sony shoots DV.
    They both need different Easy Setups. iMovie deals with this automatically.

  • How to use H.264 footage with uncompressed 8bit PAL footage

    I have a FCP project with the uncompressed 8 bit PAL settings and FPS is 25 as per PAL standards.
    Now i have some 2 minutes of footage fron Canon 7D with H.264 settings. Frame size is 1920*1080 and FPS is 24. I was trying various options to use the footage but failed. already done with various exports like making a new projects of the H.264 settings and export the file as PAL setting with 720*576 and FPS 25, but the result is really bad. Video is shaking and pixels are damaged. Pan shots and other moving shots lost their quality totally.
    I even installed an EOS codec, CE1110X, but dont know if i am using it the way it should be or not.
    I even tried to export the footage from Premiere CS5 but the result was even bad.
    What to do? Please help.

    just tried converting the footage with mpeg streamclip but the problem remains. Jitters are there and pixels are damaged. Details of the shots are in poor quality. I think the main reason behind this is the source footage is on 24 FPS and i am trying to convert it to 25 FPS. What you think? If this could be the possible reason?
    I will get the full card structure in few hours and try the Log and Transfer procedure and get back to share the experience.

    thanks a lot for the Log and Transfer tutorial, with the help of that tutorial now i can easliy transfer the clips, once i get the full card structure.

  • Panasonic 24p footage - workflow in CS4

    Hi there,
    Although it’s my first post on this forum I’ve been reading and browsing for answers to my questions before – it’s not the case for me to give advises, not yet at least!!!
    But this thread just confuses me a lot and I don’t think I fully understood the previous related discussions I’ve read. So here is my question:
    What’s the workflow in Premiere CS4 with DVX100 footage, 24pA (although I also have some 24p Standard – meaning 2:3:2:3 pulldown cadence) to obtain a 24p video with Nooooo interlaced artifacts?
    For      the 24pA, from what I reasoned myself and read on this forum, I chose      the 24p Standard present under DV-24p. Captured the footage      and applied the Interpret footage -> Remove 24p DV pulldown.  Set the in and out points; dragged      it on the timeline of a sequence (24p preset). None of the Source or the      Monitor windows show any interlaced artifacts and the timeline shows NO red line above. So it should be a 23.97fps footage, right?
    BUT, as soon as exported (in the Microsoft AVI format with, for e.g.,  the NTSC DV 24p preset) I DO see the video as interlaced in BSplayer, while with Windows Media Player it shows no interlaced artifacts. I thought that my BSplayer is configurated wrong, but, any further compression I apply to this like exported video (a DivX codec, for e.g.), gives me a new video file with interlaced look in BOTH players. I’m loosing my mind – where do I do wrong? Project settings? Export settings?
    (the footage was shot on tripod, but with a lot of motion in it - sport! And is designed to be exported for DVD and to be viewed on computer.)
    2.      How could I mix 24pA footage with 24p Standard footage of the same DVX100? As, for mistake, the 1st day I shot 24p Standard instead of 24pA?
    From what I  understood the 24p Standard need a 29,97 fps sequence – is it right?

    It works--I've done it dozens of times with hours of 24p (not 24pA) footage. The 24pA cadence wasn't necessarily designed to make 24p editing possible; it was designed to make 24p editing less taxing for a computer and somewhat higher quality, because a whole "frame" (and I say "frame" in quotes because there are no such things as "frames" in interlaced video) could simply be discarded.
    I understand the logic of your thinking, but again, keep in mind that are no such things as frames in interlaced video. Each field is written independently, but we like to think of a video frame as being comprised of a top and bottom (or upper and lower, or odd and even) field because it's easier to comprehend that way. For the most part, this thinking works; that's the whole source of the "is it 30i or 60i?" nomenclature question.
    Now, while I'm not too sure about the science or math of it--I try to stay out of the part--I believe the way that DV compression works is to package those two fields together as a "frame", simply for compression purposes. The fields are still independent, and can be recovered as independent entities, but it involves decompression to reverse the DV compression. Once you do that, you have two separate fields, and in the case of 24p, those independent fields can now be reassembled in the proper order to recreate 24 independent progressive frames. It is the 2:3 pulldown cadence that tells the software which fields it needs to use to recreate the independent frames. Of course, it's still DV, so in order for it to be played back properly, there must be a recompression step.
    And this is why 24pA was invented. It's still recorded with fields, because it's interlaced DV at its heart, but the 2:3:3:2 cadence allows for the third "frame" of five to simply be ignored: everything the editing software needs to create a 24p stream is already encoded in the DV stream, without any decompression or reassembly needed. Recording using 24pA maintains a somewhat higher quality on those frames that would otherwise have to be reconstructed if the video was recorded with 24p, and there is theoretically less of an impact on computer performance because the decompression/recompression cycle is being avoid (though I doubt that has much bearing on any computer manufactured within the last few years).
    I know it seems like voodoo, but that's really how it works (distilled a bit, I suppose!). Check out this article at Adam Wilt's website for more information, as well as some graphics that illustrate what's going on in 24p and 24pA recording.

  • Final Cut Pro footage and Canon 5D import

    I am able to drag footage from Canon 5 D Mark 111 media card directly into Final Cut 7.  Previously I remember compressing footage, why does one compress footage, the total media is 8 GB.

    FCP doesn't work well with the native files that camera shoots. Unfortunately is APPEARS like it will, but it won't. Yeah, it'll import fine, and you might begin editing fine, but things will pop up, like a sluggish system, loss of sync while editing, loss of sync when trying to export.
    Do not cut the native H.264 MOV files the camera shoots with. FCP demands FCP editing codecs, and the one you want is ProRes 422. You'll need to use COMPRESSOR for this, as Log and Transfer doesn't support the 5D Mark III.  Now, the bad news is that that 8GB of footage will become about 32-40GB...because the format you are converting to has a higher data rate.  This is unavoidable, if you plan on using FCP 7.  Premiere Pro will cut this format natively...and FCX can, but FCX does still want to "optimize" the media, and by that it means convert to ProREs.
    Gotta convert to ProRes 422 before you import the footage.

  • Need help with Canon Vixia HF S200 and FCP settings looks awful, help!

    Shot footage on Canon Vixia HF S200 HD at PF24 looks great in camera. Used Wondershare video converter to go from .MTS file to MPEG4 file. Brought into FCP 6.0.6 now image has a lag time or slightly blocky/mosaic when people or camera moves; the sound is good. What should my sequence settings be? Did I miss a setting in Wondershare? I've never used this camera before and my boss needs me to impress our new school superintendent...help!

    ...Pro Res 422 for a 4 minute project using FCP 6.0.6. It's a Mac Pro 2x3Ghz Quad with GB 800 Mhz. The project is almost done but it is freezing up during playback. Plays for 20 second then playhead freezes then jumps ahead. I've copied timeline sequence 2 times and created new sequences and that does not help. If anyone has suggestions I'm all ears, thanks.

  • What's the best way to deal with Canon pf24 files?

    I'm working on a project shot mainly with Canon DSLR footage (1080p, 24fps.) But now I would like to add some footage from a Canon Camcorder recording in AVCHD format. It would seem to make the most sence to shoot at 24fps, or as Canon calls it pf24. The question is, is premiere or media encoder able to interpret the canon footage and do the proper 3-2 pulldown? Or should I record in 30fps (or pf30) and convert the footage to 24 fps in media encoder before adding it to my project? Keep in mind that I can't just shoot everything in 30p because the bulk of the project is already shot at 24p. Also, I am using CS6. Does anyone have experience with this? Thoughts?

    Ed you are soo right!   PP does not automatically fix the problem by dropping the footage into a 24p AVCHD sequence.  If you have CS6 PP and AE you can use easily fix this ugly problem.
    Excuse me why I step up on my soapbox - Adobe Premiere Pro development team -- please fix this @$%& problem asap!!!!  The PP Interpret footage function is a joke without it!
    The best solution I could come up with after investing a ton of time into this is to use AfterEffects inside PP as a filter.  Therefore you will not have to duplicate or re-render all your PF24 footage to create true 24p clips.  You work with the same source clips throughout the entire process.  Here's what you do - 1st create a 24p AVCHD sequence in PP and drop your PF24 clips into it. Now you can select individual clips or the entire sequence of clips and "right click" and select "Replace with AfterEffect Composition".  This will export the selected clip(s) into AE.  Now you can use the world-famous AE Interpret footage function to remove the pulldown issues.  Inside AE right-click the clip - select Interpret footage - select the fielding (in my case it was Upper Field First) - then finally the "magic bullet" - select "Guess 3:2 Pulldown" button.  Now when you jump back into PP you will be working with beautiful "TRUE" 24p footage.

  • Working with Canon XF files. Do they work nativley with PP6 or PPCC at all?

    I want to start using PP6 - PPCC for all of my work going forward. I mostly with canon XF files on a mac book pro. Having done a number of tests it seems PP just doesn't work with them at all Ive tried importing via prelude, directly and  via Canon XF utility. I have tried this in a number of configurations.
    It  doesn't allow you to view more then 30 seconds of footage in the browser. So whats the problem,  a bug? Is there a fix?
    Is it worth changing over ? withthe hassel of transcodes its so much less attractive.
    Any advice welcome.

    Many people are working heavily with the MXF out of Canon rigs and doing fine. Some are having issues. A few seem to be dead in the water with that codec/wrapper. So I'd guess it's a combination of hardware & software configurations & interactions that Adobe hasn't completely nailed down. So ... you might want to snoop around here, though do remember, the ones who post most often and most ... decidedly ... will be those with problems, and those who are just working away ... don't post a lot.
    Still, the more of you with those cams & footage posting here, the more they'll learn about the issues there and the better they'll be able to get this handled.
    I'd recommend posting your entire hardware/software/processing info here ...
    -OS/CPU/RAM/GPU/vRAM specific to the dot and with video driver listed also.
    -Disc layout of programs, cache, projects, & footage ... and connections with any externals.
    -ALL programs & plugins within those programs that touch the files, any effects. (Yea, I realize when you can't go more than 30 seconds "effects" are pretty nil ... )
    -Camera/s used & original codecs/wrappers, frame rates & size.
    All this can be of use to puzzling out what's going on. For some, just moving forward OR backwards in video driver has fixed it. For others something else has worked. And a certain number are simply ... frustrated.

  • Can't capture HDV with Canon Legria hv40

    Hi,
    I'm having this very irritating problem - when I try to capture HDV(25) footage with Premiere Pro CS6 the program:
    recognizes the camera
    has control over camera navigation
    doesn't show preview in the capture window
    says it's capturing, but only captures audio from the camera (in mp3)
    I'm using FireWire and all the Premiere/camera settings are set to HDV.
    I can't figure out what the problem might be here.

    I originally had this problem with a  #trial version of CS5.5 and it did exactly what you describe, (incidentally Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 11 @ $75 USD, captures perfectly) ,but, on going to full version and upgrade to CS5.5.2 it has been working perfectly for the last 18 months. (It won't help you but, HDV Canon Capture in Premiere Pro 1.5.1. and that is 5+years old was/is very efficient)
    And later as well, just double check New Sequence > Presets > HDV 1080i 25 (50) or other .
    Click on Preset Descriptions it will show what it is doing.

    #Ps. This occurred in a downloaded trial version (Adobe may not have included the HDV/mpeg-2 codec or it may have been corrupted), but, there is no problem here on 2 x i7 64 bit computers running the program from disc.
