Mobile-accounts FULL PATH badboy
Our goal is to get Mobile Accounts with Portable Home Directories working. The home folders are stored on an external hard drive on Mac OS X Server 10.6.3. It's more or less working... but not quite ARGHH! HELP!!
The short question is: What value do I use for the 'full path'
The obvious answer, causes problems.
THE GORY DETAILS (+aka. 'argh!!'+):
Since all the files for user1 are stored on macsrv1 in /Volumes/team1/users/user1 I believe that in WGM I should have:
Share Point URL: afp://macsrv1.disney.ch/users
path to home: user1
full path: /Volumes/team1/users/user1
but when I try to log onto user1 on mac1, for the first time, it fails.
In /var/log/secure.log I read +"user1 not known"+.
And +"Could not get the user record for 'user1' from Directory Services"+
(see *error1 at the bottom of this msg)
IF I CHANGE the full path to:
full path: /Network/Servers/macsrv1.disney.ch/users/user1
THE LOGIN WORKS (I'm asked if I want to create a mobile account and when I say yes, a local folder is created on mac1, and any syncing does indeed cause files to appear on macsrv1 in /Volumes/team1/users/user1
HOWEVER (+aka. Oh no!+):
When the user does an ssh into macsrv1, his home directory (cd ~ or echo $HOME) is /Network/servers/macsrv1.disney.ch/users/user1 which is really just /users/users1 which is a virgin/template-like folder.. certainy not /Volumes/team1/users/user1
BUT (goodnews here)
If I now set the full path back...
full path: /Volumes/team1/users/user1
Everything works. Loggging into mac1 ok. SSHing into macsrv1 ok.
But logging into mac2 fails (until I switch out the full path again)
*a. WHAT SHOULD BE THE CORRECT VALUE FOR FULL PATH?*
b. If it should be /Volumes/team1/users/user1 then how can I convince the client macs to create the mobile account?
2. I have a 2nd question concerning the automount re-mounting the drive... causing a double mount! I've described the problem here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2461695&stqc=true
I've hunted through the forums, where appartently the answer lies, without success. Please help!

p.s. I might add that the afp Share point on macsrv1 for /Volumes/team1/users is called 'users' (configured via WGM). Does that help? Maybe there is some weird conflict between there existing a /Users in root, and there being a mount called 'users'?

If I configure the login window to show all users (including network users), then user1 does indeed show up.
*3. Logging into user1 via ssh works.*

dscl /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 -list /Users
does indeed show user1 (and any other user I create)
So why can't I login/create user1 on the client mac without toggling the FULL PATH to /Network/Servers/macsrv1.disney.ch/users/user1 first? arghh!

Issue with Applications, file paths, mobile accounts in snow Leopard OD

The Facts:
2 x Xserves running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 Server
(1 is a Open Directory Master, the other a backup/slave)
About 20 end-users running 10.5.8 Leopard and 10 end-users running 10.6.2 Snow Leopard on MacBook Pro laptops.
All laptops are Managed Mobile clients with full administrative privileges/rights for the local drive.
The Issue(s):
Having an odd issue with many applications like Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop etc. not remembering the last used file path and the default network home path showing up instead of the local one.
This issue ONLY appears with the Snow Leopard clients and the Snow Leopard Server. No matter what, the default path will be the enduser's network home path. This leads to endusers constantly having to sync their home folders to get the copy or losing files altogether.
The Leopard clients are unaffected, can save to the local hard drive by default and have no issue "remembering" the last accessed file's path (whether local or on the network).
What gives? What changed? Any thoughts, workarounds, fixes most appreciated.Okay, I'll rephrase the issue
When the Snow Leopard clients are connected to the network and can connect to the OD Master etc, the default path for saving files to the desktop changes to their network accounts e.g. afp://Server/Users/Enduser/Desktop. If they save a file, it will copy here and then the enduser has to synch to get a copy of the file on their local desktop.
If the client is not connected to the network, no issue. Enduser can save files to the local desktop like normal.
How do we change this such that the enduser can save to the local harddrive first regardless of being connected?
All Snow Leopard Clients are mobile accounts which synch hourly the full profile.
Any further thoughts or similar experiences gang?
Something we could possibly change in the mcx settings perhaps or am a I missing the point? -
FileSync Failure On Mobile Account Home Directory
Hardware
Server
Mac Mini Mid-2012, OS X 10.9.5, Server 3.1.2, OpenDirectory ON, HomeDirectory: /Volumes/HomeFolders/Users
Client
iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2012, OS X 10.9.5, MobileAccount
Network
Server exists on a foreign subnet. Client binds to OD Replica on local network. Authentication works without issue. SSH connections to Server work flawlessly. SCP can be used to move files across the network without issue.
Situation
User account automatically creates a mobile profile on any system used. This is set in Workgroup Manager for all users of this User's type.
The local machine has successfully created a Mobile Account for the user, and User is able to use the machine without complication, except that User complains none of his personal files are present.
Home Sync reports last sync as being "Incomplete".
Attempted Corrections
The log file had indicated that the synchronization process was being cancelled by the next synchronization which started automatically after 20 minutes. To correct this problem, I changed the HomeSync settings to start only on "Manual" requests.
After this change, I observed that the log file that a file was missing. I ran SCP to duplicate the home folder on the local machine, replacing the home folder that had been already created. I no longer find the missing file issue.
I found an article suggesting that deleting the .FileSync folder from the local and remote home folders would force the system to re-evaluate the status of the sync. I deleted these folders in order to allow the system to recreate them. The system continues to have Incomplete home sync processes.
Help Required
I am unable to interpret the remaining EXCEPTION lines in the log file. I appreciate any help deciphering the next steps in fixing the Home Sync process. I appreciate any tips or advice on what causes Home Sync to fail in these situations, and if any person has information on how to create a local mirror that would be referenced for the HomeSync rather than the main server, that information would be greatly appreciated.

Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select

from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:

Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.

Mobile account rules are still being ignored!
We've been running Tiger server for a couple years in combination with mobile accounts for some years now, mostly without significant problems. Since the introduction with Leopard it started giving problems: all rules in the WGM mobile account setup are ignored, it simply syncs the COMPLETE home folder of all Leopard clients. We are a 'music for picture' company, clients have large iTunes libraries and their /Movie folders are also pretty filled up, so data management became really problematic.
I figured that upgrading to Leopard server would solve this problem, so I bought a copy and started testing on a spare Mini Mac. And to my surprise the problem is still there! Syncing a mobile account from a Tiger client is fine, all rules are followed but with Leopard clients the problem still remains.
So what does a proper system administrator do? It starts collecting information from the internet and asks colleagues in the field what their experience is. It comes down (after a few days of research and testing) that I can't find the solution!
My test system:
Mini Mac with Leopard server 10.5.6
Macbook with Leopard client 10.5.6 as a test machine
iMac with Tiger 10.4.11 as test machine
- I create a user in WGM
- I create a group in WGM and give it the proper preferences for syncing
- I assign the user to the group
- I make myself a cup of tea and take a deep breath
- login as the new user and start testing
What I've tried so far to solve it:
- turned around the 'what-to-sync': instead of syncing the home folder (~/) and make rules, I setup exactly what it should sync and no rules. Didn't work, still syncs complete home folder
- delete sync prefs on client machine (/Library/Managed Preferences and .FileSync in home/network folder) restart and login again
- instead of Full Path rules, I've tried to use 'Name' and others. Same problem.
- went to WGM --> Group --> Preferences --> Details and added System/Library/CoreServices/ManagedClient. Edited the com.apple.homeSync so it should work. It didn't.
- started all over again, didn't work.
It still syncs the complete home folder and does not listen to any rule whatsoever. Is there anyone that has any idea what can solve this? Where about to upgrade to a new server with Leopard and I need the mobile accounts for my clients.

AuxI usually enable this on Computer Groups or the Guest Computer account rather than via workgroups. I don't know if that somehow makes a difference. May be worth switching to this to see if the problems miraculously go away.
Have you enabled the server-side tracking feature in Leopard Server?
You can run the following command for diagnostic purposes:
mcxquery -o <path to where you want it to go>/mcx_export.txt -format xml -user <username> -group <groupname>
You can look at that to see if the Server is doing its job of delivering the MCX correctly to the client for the user and group. -
Mobile account creation has different result...
Created managed preference group:
- Finder: Show connected servers on Desktop
- Mobility: Set to create Mobile account, synching off, HomeFolder on startup volume.
- Login: Maps three SMB paths to Windows Server folders
- Active Directory: UNC path set in user's Active Directory profile to Home Folder on Windows Server
There are two different conditions that give different results:
(1) User logs on to a particular Mac once (using AD network account), prior to applying managed preferences. User is not member of preference group. Mac creates full set of User Account folders in user's home. Then user's name is applied to preference group, and user logs on.
(2) User's name applied to preference group, prior to logging on to a particular Mac. User logs in using AD network account.
Results: With condition (1), User gets a full set of typical folders in local home folder, UNC network home folder is mapped to dock - the two Home folders (local and network) are kept separated, all works as anticipated.
With condition (2), user does not consistently get full set of folders in local home folder, UNC network home folder is mapped to dock - and local "Library/Preferences" and "Downloads" is copied into network home. Occasionally, user's AD account gets locked out due to too many failures while attempting to access folders.
I would greatly appreciate anyone who can lead me to understand this.
Thank you...DavidThe usual approach with Open Directory is to either use Workgroup Manager to define a managed login preference for a computer group to define that those member computers should cause the use of mobile accounts on those computers, or to do the same thing via Profile Manager.
Note: If you are using Mavericks you must use Profile Manager as it does not support this via Workgroup Manager managed preferences.
This will not require users to need admin authorisation. -
Mobile account can't sync on the server itself
This should be a super simple lion server setup: 1 iMac running Lion Server with a set of network accounts, and 1 Mac Mini (running Lion) bound to the OD master running on the iMac. The iMac hosts the OD master and the network accounts. I'd like users to be able to use both the iMac and the Mini with the same accounts (mobile or network), but setting the Home directory correctly in Server.app is driving me nuts:
If I set the the home folder to "Local only" (equivalent to setting the home path to /Users in Workgroup Manager), the users can log in to the Server with no problems, but don't have access to their files on the Mini. Authentication is fine, they just don't access the correct network home directories.
If I set the home folder to "Users" (equivalent to setting the Home URL to afp://iMac.private/Users/username and the Full Path to: /Network/Servers/iMac.private/Users/username in Workgroup Manager), they can log in to the Mini, but home sync on the server gives this error:
There was a problem connecting to the server "iMac.private".
This file server is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally.
And then the home sync fails.
So, what's the solution? Do I need to make a fake path on the server that looks like a network mount?When you're on the Mac mini can you Ping or access the iMac server with "iMac.private"?
Does DNS running fine on the Server? Is the Server set as the DNS server on the client?
What is the output from "sudo changeip -checkhostname" on the Server in Terminal.app?
Sound's like the Mac mini couldn't resolve the iMac's DNS-name "iMac.private". -

So my head's swimming with "I dunno's" and I've been perusing probably all the wrong threads trying not to sound like a noob and find the literature that will finally lead me to a solution. This is my first rodeo so make no assumptions about my experience (maybe).
Short Version
I can't login network users. I get an error "You are unable to log in to the user account "<%short_name%>" at this time. Logging in using >console tells me this No home directory: <path to home directory> i.e. /Network/Servers/department.domain.com/Department/Accounts/bbunny
If anyone can point me where to read, I will do so.
Perhaps a longer discussion on how to verify that the proper permissions exist on the share/home directory in question and what those would be.

I want to setup a Mac Mini server to have network login accounts stored on the 2nd data volume in a directory we shall call Accounts*. Here all the "network users/logins" have their home directories, so that when they login at the workstation the idea is the workstation will sync their account and allow them to login, if the server is not available, the hope is I can configure it to allow them to login if they've logged in before and the files will sync when they are able. That being the ideal, I get the impression that for best practices, Apple is discouraging the use of mobile accounts that use Home Sync perhaps because it's reliability has been iffy, please advise. A windows user might think of this as "roaming profiles" but, if I understand it, its a little more than that.
Note, I do not want to login to the server and actively work on that network share, I want the account to be local and sync'd as needed. But I want the user to be able to sit at any of the 6 other workstations and see the same documents, emails etc. Obviously if the server is down, it won't be possible to authenticate, but I think it should have cached credentials that should allow the user to login if the server is down and still go about their work.
This is the small picture...there is a larger picture that involves, parallel virtual machines of Windows Server 2008 R2 on server and and Windows 7 on the client, ical, ichat and perhaps wiki's.
I apologize for the roughness of this question, in the interest of brevity, I have plenty of problems that led me here that I can expound upon if asked.

Make sure that your user has the "Proper" access. For me I created a test user from Server.app and saw what access he had as a way to "check myself for a properly created users" and because I think one is kind of on his/her own using WGM and duplicated the same access. (I was a little neater, though and did it with a group, not individual users, that would have been a mess!)
Server Admin.app > Access
Click the "+" sign, sort by UID and Add the imported users to the following Services…
( You can use a group, but understand when Server.app creates users they get added
individually to each of these groups. )

(That's an understatement) I could go in depth about all the crap I had to read about, I still
know I am missing a chunk of tech brain when it comes to the particulars. Basically, I boil
it down to this…
Permissions require thinking about things first with regards to POSIX permissions... good
ole ls, chmod, chgrp, chown to the rescue with ugo permissions or the old 755, 600 etc
stuff.
Apple's file-sharing access uses this as a starting point to see what the user is allowed to
access.
I also needed to use chflags once to unhide a file that I mucked around with using xattr.
I still haven't figured out why folders can lose their triangles, but I didn't find out if you cp or
move them from terminal, the triangles come back in the moved or copied directory. For a
minute I thought it was because cp alone doesn't preserve flag attributes, but mv actually
works by doing a cp that preserves the flags, unless it's a bug. I dunno.
This helped me get my file visible again...
chflags hidden path_to_file

My basic guideline was avoid using ACLs if at all possible, if you try to use them, things
can get crazy complicated, take notes and plan, baby. If you read above, opening up
permissions wide is wrong though. You would restrict permissions tightly to begin with and
then place ACE (Access Control Entries) to specifically target the rights you want to enable.
Here's one that's obviously a novice attempt to do this, but since the novice is the only one
speaking…. here it is, Universe… >:P
sudo chmod -R +ai "admin allow read,write,delete,file_inherit,directory_inherit,search,list" Department/
That allowed my admin to do all the things a normal user could do so far… It fixed things for
my admin, which made me happy. I really hate having to authenticate or sudo just to see
the contents of a nested directory. I could explain it, and even give a few notes on why its
probably overkill, but I will attempt to look less stupid till "poked".
There's another command line utility I STILL haven't read, which may bear mentioning
because…well I haven't read it. umask (see wikipedia or unix.com)…I worked past my
problems without going into it so far, but obviously it's there, and it serves a purpose.

Second, if you can't obtain the "specific" permissions you need with POSIX, chmod also
can set the 2nd category of permissions, which windows users may be familiar with
Access Control Lists (ACLs) and here you get some really fine granularity...messy stuff.
All in all, if I felt I could guide you through these murky waters, I would, but I think I'll let
the professionals weigh in on that one and cut my wall-of-text to ribbons.
To heuristically check I would connect from a client as one or two of my users and see what
folders I could mount as a share, armored with an understanding of what ls -le@O * showed
me in Terminal.
3.) File sharing setup (Turned ON, Home sharing Enabled)
Here is an example of using command line sharing utility where each share is properly
labeled (that took a bit for me to figure out) still this share only enables the AFP share as
you can see from my flags.
sudo sharing -a /Volumes/Hard\ Drive/Department/Database -A Database-afp -F Database-ftp -S Database-smb -n Database -s 100 -g 000 -i 10
Then you do a sudo sharing -l and get back what you just did…

If you mess up the sharing command, you may not be paying attention (I wasn't) but there
are a lot of defaults that Apple will just assume you meant to do anyway and it won't read
any of your flags, you have to get it right or the flags will be defaulted.
( Basically I could tell I was bombing it for one, I explicitly only wanted afp working, but
the default was afp and smb. So each time I ran sudo sharing -l after I shot my sharing
command…back would come smb shared: 1 and I knew that wasn't right. Also my
custom names were defaulting to the name of the directory not the name I had
specified. )
I like to know what protocol my share is over so when it doesn't work, I know which protocol's
are connecting. It's not full-proof, but it's a bookmark. I wish the network browser would
identify the protocol that its available listed shares are using, because small visual queues
like that help when you're trying to see what works. Maybe that's something I should
investigate via the command line?
As a note about reading forums, I discovered using command line that "\" is kind of like a
way of going to next line neatly with long commands…."\ " is a way to insert a space. As you
can see above where I have a volume with a space in it.
Removing shares was a little trickier though, sharing -r Share\ With-space didn't work….I
had to enclose it in quotes and do "Share With-space" instead. So nooby beware!
( *nix users are now rolling their eyes at this tip. )
I wasn't sure how you enabled a share for home directories from the command line, maybe its
in the manual, but I was up to my eyeballs in manuals already so I haven't gone back to
revisit this question since my work around was to go to Server.app and verify that what I set
up in the sharing in terminal was being reflected in the gui…sort of my own MVC
(model-view-controller) check.
4.) Directory Utility > Directory Editor or dscl
Make sure what you see in WGM and Server.app are reflected here….to that question let's
take a journey where I did some exploring about that.

Ah, then you will - LOVE - this tip…
( Provided my testing or yours, later, doesn't prove that in my ignorance I've broken
Open Directory. Remember, WHITEGLOVES!!!! but here we get a little dirty. I think of
OD as Apple's Registry, but that's not what it is at all. However, you as the user do have
to "****" around in it from time to time. )
I scoured the forums and everyone was saying things like "You have to change your server
role" etc. which seemed a little bit dumb to me (dumb because you're pushing views around
not "controlling"), and well, yea, that share that I couldn't modify or delete was REALLY
bugging me.
Now hmm… Before you do ANYTHING, how do you try to not hurt yourself…in Windows you
can make a Registry Backup….(yea bad analogy) In Server Admin.app you can go to your Open
Directory Service > Archive and Choose a place to Archive your information. (Figure this out by
yourself, this is getting long…sheesh! It's easy. Restoring is just as easy and painless.)
Before we can remove the entry we "SEE" in WGM we should make sure no
one has it selected so as not to "corrupt" the OD db, so in WGM first before going to Directory
Utility set the Home directory to "None". (We need to remember to set this to a correct share
later….Mental Note!!!)
Now Open Directory Utility
Method 1
System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Options
Click the Lock to make changes…
Authenticate -> click "OK" (do I REALLY have to step-by-step this?)
Network Account Sever: • Local Server - click "Edit" button here.

You should glance through this and get to know it. You should use it to see what
information is really being stored about your Users, Groups, Mounts…
We are interested in Mounts, which is where we want to go…and there is the pesky
mount that you will see reflected in WGM.
Authenticate, and delete the bugger.
Quit WGM and restart it. Voila, bad share is GONE!!!!!
a.) First select all my users
b.) Then I clicked on the "+" and added the correct share
( Remember, I only showed you the first one we created, this is another and
for THIS one you HAVE to go into Server.app and verify that it is set to be
available for Home Directories in this case for AFP. )
For the home directory entry you do this...

Interesting dscl commands…(check it out in command line form and compare side by side with
what you see in the GUI Directory Utility)

If you want to output information about each user, though, use readall:
dscl . readall /users
dscl . readall /groups
And if you need to programatically parse said information, use -plist to make your life easier:
dscl -plist . readall /users
dscl -plist . readall /groups
This made a little more direct sense to me, language wise…but fyi "." is kind of a wild card I think so the first
commands I think look in ALL directories local, Search, LDAP whatever you have. The command here
corresponds to the Entry from the Pop-up menu "…in node > Blah…" see GUI of Directory Utility to confirm.
dscl /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 -list /Users
dscl /Local/Default -list /Users
5.) Workgroup Manager
Remember this is a utility that is not long for this world. Apple's Mountain Lion is rumored to fully
replace it, why? Yea, Apple's making a go at MDM (Mobile Device Management) and somehow
desktop computers are being pulled/dragged along for the ride. I have plenty of issues with
Profile Manager, but I'll likely revisit it in a couple of months and see where we stand.
Anyway, treat this baby like the bottom rung, because, well it is built like you start your
foundation here, but it's just a viewer with controlling "tweaks". Use the other areas to get a solid
grasp of what is actually going on. Server.app is where you should create accounts you can
feel are safe. When you create accounts in WGM, you are responsible for making sure they
have the appropriate EVERYTHING.
This list is by no means complete, but these are the areas this noob is or was prepared to talk about.

Mobile Accounts: Computer or User?
I finally figured out how to set up my DNS/LDAPv3/server on my LAN. But, playing around with setting up Users and Computers is still confusing. I had unsucessfully set up a mobile account (multiple times), with a user directory (by accident), but was not sucessful in getting them to sync. My scenario is this: I have (1) MBP that I have an existing user account (my account) which also happens to be the administrator account. My goal is the get my home folder in my MBP to sync to the server I set up. Eventually, I'll set up another laptop so I can use either and use the same home folder, or just log in as that user (myself) on the server directly. So, a few specific questions so I can get started...
1. Using Workgroup Manager, should I be setting up a new "User" or new "Computer" on the server?
2. When I set up either for experimental purposes, Under Accounts>Basic, there is no Home Directory. When I click the Home, then click + to add one, I don't know what I'm supposed to type (i.e., Mac OS X Server/Share Point URL, Path to Home Folder, or Full Path). Ideally, it would be nice to have my network home folder of my PHD on my external RAID, but anywhere would work for the time being.
3. Can this be done for an existing user on my MBP, or is this only for new users or computers? Should I reinstall the SL client on my MBP and dedicate the Administrator as just that, then create a new user on the server and clone my existing home folder to it (with my applications and preferences on my MBP or course)?
I've read through the user manual a few times. But, I just don't have enough server knowledge to pick up on whatever Apple is explaining.From what I have done and learned with Mobile Users, these are few tips;
First, you need to have a Mobile User in your server so you an sync it. You can not sync the user from your MBP just like that, the User needs to exist on the server to be able to get synced.
Second, you need to create Sharepoints with AFP or witch ever service you wish to use, (I recommend AFP for mac user homes), Add AFP service in Server Admin and open it, create folder somewhere what you wish to use for sharing the data ( in the raid drive perhaps), and then click Share, and select use for User home folders. When you do this, this sharepoint will show in Workgroup Manager in User / Home tab, and you can just click it from there, and hit Create Home Now, then remember to Save.
I believe there is a way you can transfer your user and home folder&files to your server, I remember reading about that somewhere in here, but I dont have spesific instructions for you I'm afraid. You need to search this forum.

The server1 share point, called 'users' is /Volumes/team1/users

Questions :
1. How is the HOME folder determined by the computer? Despite the two config-scenarios, the client mac1 uses HOME as /Users/user1 (as it should) but not on Server1 or Server2 (on Server1 it always uses the value in the full path specified in the Mobility>Home for the user)(In Server2 it sometimes uses that value and sometimes it uses the previous configuration value).
2. How is the MOUNT on the client determined? It seems that it is always /Volumes/users (as it should?); Perhaps it is identified by the system seeing what is behind the user's share point? What's weird is that I'm sure/certain that at one point, under config-scenario1, the mount point on mac8 was NOT /Volumes/users but rather /Network/Servers/server1.disneyland.ch ! Did I dream that ?
3. How can I PREVENT the mount happening on Server2 (it's mounting on top of the existing /Volumes/team1/users !!) ?
4. If I DO accept config-scenario1, couldn't I just create a symbolic link on server2 in /Network/Server/server1.disneyland.ch/users-->/Volumes/team1/users ?? Actually this doesn't work because even with sudo I can't mkdir /Networks/Servers/server1.disneyland.ch into which I wold have make the users-> link

Mobile accounts are not being issued kerberos tickets
Hi
If I set mobile accounts to expire as soon as they log out, as soon as the user logs back into the same mac with the same account, it does not get issued another kerberos ticket at login.
If I turn mobile accounts off, it works every time.
running 10.6, 10.6 open directory server and the user accounts are AD accounts server 2003.
I am pulling my hair our here. Is this something that is intentional?Other observations:

10.5.3: Can't Create Mobile Account
I have a MacBook Pro that authenticates to Active Directory.
When I try to create a Mobile Account
[ System Preferences --> Accounts --> Mobile Accounts:Create ]
I get prompted to
"*Enter your password to create a mobile account*"
However, it does not accept the password, responding with
"*Incorrect password*"
After three attempts, I get
"*Mobile account creation canceled*"
and then logged off.
I've tried both my Active Directory account password, and the local administrator password. Neither work.
At least I can get that far; in 10.5.2, the Mobile Account:Create button was greyed out.
Is anyone else having the same problem? Is there a fix for this?
I'm going to be out of the office next week for a conference, and would really like to get this working before then.
UPDATE: When trying to enable FileVault for my A.D. account, I get the following message:
*You cannot turn on FileVault for this account.*
*This account is either a network account or the home folder is on a server. You cannot turn on FileVault for these types of accounts.*
This makes this problem more than a minor annoyance, as my company policy -- and plain common sense -- requires encryption enabled for laptops.

On the Active Directory Server SMB Digital Signing Requirements (there are two: Server and Client) need to be disabled. It's not enough to leave them undefined. Once that has been done make sure client clocks are within 5 minutes of the server's time clock. In the Network Preferences Pane make sure the mac is using the AD DC for resolving internal DNS Services and the Search Domain field is filled in with the appropriate AD Domain Name. It's also advisable to fill in the WINS Tab with the relevant information for the AD..
Launch Directory Utility and select the Services Icon (click Show Advanced Options to see this). Select the Active Directory plug-in and click the disclosure triangle to show Advanced Options. Leave everything as the default and select 'Create Mobile Account at Login'. Fill in the Active Directory Domain field with the relevant information. For example if the AD's FQDN is adserver.addomain.com then the information should be addomain.com. Now click Bind. In the resulting window key in authentication details for an account that has authority for the AD Domain. Typically this would be the AD admin account name and password. What follows next will be a 5 step process. Depending on how well the AD has been configured this should take anything from 5-10 seconds and possibly 1-2 minutes. If it takes a short time this will be a good sign as to the 'health' of internal DNS Services as well as the AD configuration. The longer it takes the more the likelihood of problems.
By the way there is no magic fix for integrating/binding mac clients to an AD Server. Over 90% of how well this goes will rest with how well the AD is configured.
If the bind has been successful you should see a Kerberos TGT (ticket granting ticket) has been created in /Library/Preferences. It will be a file called edu.mit.Kerberos. You can inspect this and it should show the relevant details regarding the KDC (Kerberos Distribution Center). If you now log out you should see the Log in window display the local admin user as well 'Other'. It should look like a shadowed head and shoulders in front of a star field. Select this and supply your AD name and password. Provided the AD admin has defined a UNC path in the Profiles tab for your account on the AD Server for home folder creation and that you have full read/write privileges for that folder then you should be logging into your locally created home folder that also gets created at the same time on the AD.
Its best if you sync when logging out as there have been problems syncing at other times. Mileage may vary.

Plist files keep being duplicated (for mobile accounts)
We are running a Max OS X Server 10.6.8 on a local network. On the same network we have several users under mobile accounts. Some of the mobile account users are experiencing a lot of issues recently. They were running on Snow Leopard, we upgraded them to Mavericks, but the problems persist. In their ~/Library/Preferences folder, they have a lot of plist files duplicated, example for iTunes:
com.apple.iTunes.plist
com.apple.iTunes-network.plist
com.apple.iTunes-network-2.plist
com.apple.iTunes-network-3.plist
com.apple.iTunes-network-4.plist
com.apple.iTunes-network-5.plist
And it's doing that for most of the plist files in the ~/Library/Preferences folder.
The same behavior is noticed for iPhoto in the ~/Pictures folder, and each one of the duplicate is pretty big (we are talking about an iPhoto Library around 30GB):

Is there a way to avoid this duplication and to clean the preferences files properly?

Deleted items reappear on mobile account with syncing?
On a mobile account with syncing, deleted items will reappear after syncing. One can manually do a full sync. Then delete stuff. Then do a full manual sync again and the deleted items are back.
This is on Leopard 10.5.6 client and Leopard 10.5.6 server.
Open to ideas one what I ought to look at.

I'm happy I'm not alone (sorry..)
I have exactly the same problem, although I'm using Linux server, not OSX.
It all worked nicely until 10.5.6 upgrade, after that I'm having lots of home sync problems, including:
1. locally deleted items re-appear after sync
2. a lot of sync conflicts, specially when sync cannot resolve latest file or directory version between mobile and network copy (and mobile copy will be always the latest one)
3. huge syncs even if no data has been modified, ie:
I'm syncing all on login and logout, background sync is disabled.
I do login then straight away logout, so practically no data has been modified, but the sync may show me tens of GB being transferred.
Now, this is weird: I've done tests on a freshly created mobile account, with approx 50MB of data. Basically I've logged in and out repeatedly, sometimes modifying small files. Some of the syncs showed me transfer of 60MB!!! That's 10MB more than the size of the home directory!
I've looked through release notes for 10.5.6 and some sync issues were 'fixed'. I'm wondering if other ones were introduced...
As I've said, it all worked perfectly until the latest update - I have many machines behaving in the same, bad way.
Perhaps someone has a solution?

Using a mobile account on the server, external home directory

Running Server 4, Yosemite 10.10
I have setup a few mobile accounts via the server. These accounts have been given new home locations on an external thunderbolt HD. Everything is working as expected when connecting via an external MBA and MBP, login and sync work as expected:
However, when I try to use one of the network accounts on the actual server I come across sync issues, the Directory Util details used are:

Could someone explain the difference between these two, as it appears the first one comes into effect when I log into the server with the mobile account.
When i login with the account and select sync from the menubar icon I get get the following errors:

Mobile Account Error Setting Up Leopard Client, createmobileaccount error.
Hi all. I posted this discussion under Portable Home Directories, but that is unfortunately a subcategory of Max OS X Server v10.4 Tiger and this is strictly a Leopard issues, so I'm reposting here.
Just following up on an earlier thread regarding mobile home accounts. Thought I'd post a new entry as the other one has been "answered".
I've just recently upgraded a slew of clients and a server to Leopard and have been trying to enable mobile accounts on existing network home accounts. When I set this as a Preference using Workgroup Manager, nothing happens on the clients. When I try to create a mobile account directly on the client while logged in as the network user, I get a standard error (The mobile account could not be created.) every time after it asks to log out and enter the user password in order to create the mobile account.

For the account "leedale" logged in using a network home directory, entered the Terminal command as follows:

The namespace you are using for creating client proxy might not be available for consumption(i.e. it might not be published) or there is no connectivity to the source system so namespace is not available.
Try checking connection.

Can Actions Menu of Interactive Reports work with Custom Authentication?
My testing is leading my to believe that Actions Menu do not work with Custom Authentication (but only work with APEX Authentication) in APEX 3.1.2? If that's true then is there a work around to this? Just to clarify, I've posted/asked this question

Why does my final cut pro not digitize from tape the whole tape?
In digitizing a minidv tape into fcp Pro on my imac, the captured file is not complete... it skips part of the middle of the tape. What could be the problem?

Retest pending material - to be blocked from dispensing
Hello , For a particular material scheduled for retest, but still available in unrestricted stock as retest not done, system should block the dispensing of this material for production. We are not going by automatic retest scheduling because of some
