Mobile accounts? How?

A couple of months ago, I created a small server for my family, using a 2011 Mac Mini Server with Snow Leopard server software. The clients are :
One iMac with Snow Leopard
One MacBook with Snow Leopard
One iPhone 4
One iPhone 3GS
I have set up all family members as users on the server. My iMac Calendar and Address Book synchronize fine with my iPhone 4. I can receive and send emails from my iMac using the email accounts I created on the server.
The MacBook hasn't been set up yet to do the same, since it is used mainly by my wife who has no requirements for calendar or address book synching. However, I also use the MacBook when I travel so what I would like to do is this:
I would like to have all my iMac home folder (let's say it is /Users/John) stored and synchronized with my Mac Server home folder (/Network/Servers/family.myserver.com/Users/john). In that way, I'll have an additional backup of my user files on the server. I would also like to have the server-based user home folder, synchronize with my MacBook user home folder, whenever I use that account on the Macbook, so that when I travel I can have all my documents with me.
Now, I spend some time yesterday googling the term "mobile accounts" which is what I assume I have to use, but I didn''t manage to find anything (like a step-by-step guide) on how to do that.
So far, I can log in my server account just fine, and I can connect to my user folder on the server, using the "Finder/Go to Server" command. It opens the server volume and I can access it as if it were another volume of my iMac. But I do not want to manually copy files from my iMac home folder to the server folder, I would prefer if that was done automagically.
How can I do that?
Any help (liniks to Apple documents or whatever) would be greatly appreciated. The only document I have found, which deals with this matter is referring to Server 10.4, I am running 10.6.7.
Many thanks

Hi John,
You have two options that I know of for the Macs:
1. One option is MobileMe, soon to be called iCloud. There you will have more than enough to handle your needs, maybe combined with option two and then utilize a sync program like FolderSync.
2. You can utilize the sync app mentioned in the first option to sync to your server.
3. Also take a look at page 217 of the Mac OS X Server - User Management - Version 10.6 Snow Leopard-guide for a step-by-step guide dealing with the creation of Mobile Accounts.
For the iPhones, you can use the iphone configuration utility to make them team up with your network in ways you can't do manually.
HTH,
Mark

  • Mobile Account - How to Map Share Point Locally on Server?

    Hello,
Using mobile accounts on a mac mini server, this is a small home network. Primary reason for server was to use mobile accounts allow the various computers and laptops to be accessed by all family and guests with data linked to login.
All work fine except, when I login into the server as my mobile account it is unable to sync, or find any files because the Share Points do not map locally. Warning message says use locally. This causes problems with itunes, mobile account syncs etc.
Is there a way to map the Share Points using the network path, locally on the server in the mobile accounts?
    Thanks
    Peter

You need to convert the project to sharepoint 2013,  you have to change the target office version 15.0 and target framework versions to 4.0 or 4.5. For more details go throught the below posts

  • How can I create a mobile account in Mountain Lion?

    Dear All,
I have a problem creating a mobile account while joining an Active Directory domain controller (DC).
** Case one: While joining the DC, if these options are selected (Create mobile account at login) & (Force local home directory on startup disk), the home directory can not be created at all.
So, how can case one be solved?
** Case two: While joining the DC, if (Creat mobile account at login) is not selected, and (Force local home directory on startup disk) is selected, home directory can be creatded, but not as mobile account.
So, After creating the home directory, I can go to make it mobile account from Users & Groups/Active Directory user and choose mobile account.
after creating mobile account, the user loged out and then loged in back again. from here Mobile account botton is disabled and I can not manage it.
So, How can the bold underline part of case two be solved?
Note: Active directory used is Windows Server 2008.
    Regards,
    Abdelaal,

    What is a "fax dialog"?
This dialog, or something closely resembling it, is what you should see:
    Clicking Print sends the fax.
It is possible Acrobat is interfering with something, in which case you should get rid of it, unless you know of a reason to require it.

  • How to remove a mounted drive at startup in a mobile account, using netinfo

How does one remove an mounted drive at startup in a mobile account, using netinfo?
One of the user automatically mounts a network drive on her new intel Macbook in her portable account. Trouble is that the network drive is only available on the intranet. So when she is on the road, it take the Macbook very long 3-4 minutes before it let's her log in.
Simply I thought to remove the drive on her macbook through the system preferences -> account -> login items. However the "login Item" GUI is very slow to respond and if it respond it does not let me remove the network drive. I tried this both on the intranet and off the network.
I tried to remove the mounted drive at start up through the workgroup manager, but it does not show up there.
So I thought that I try to use netinfo on the local machine. But I can't find where mounting info is stored in a mobile account. I thought it would be in the local @ localhost or should I connect to an other DB?

The login items are not stored in Netinfo, they are stored in loginwindow.plist in the users Library/Preferences. You can either remove the entries for the server or simply trash that file and let a default one get recreated.

  • What is 'mobile account' and how does it work?

This is a hidden feature in Mac OS Leopard, that I believe require an Leopard Server on the network.
I have not found it in the regular user interface, but it can be revealed by following the below process:
    1. Go to System Preferences > Accounts
    2. Unlock
    3. Search for mobile account, and press Enter
    4. Wait for the Mobile account options to show up
What is this feature? How does it work?
I have found no references to it in the normal documentation.

    Google is your friend:
"A mobile account is a Mac OS X Server user account that has been copied to a local computer and remains synchronized with the server account so that both locations contain a matching set of data."(Mac OS X Server User Management, p. 46).
And it has been around since 10.3, so it is not something new to Leopard.

I tried to sign in iCloud's but it is written that "maximum number of accounts has been activated on this mobile". How to correct it?? It is not working

Q: I tried to create an iCloud account,  but I received this message: “Cannot sign in. The maximum number of free accounts have been activated on this iPhone.” What does this mean?
A: Apple limits users to 3 iCloud accounts meaning you can only create three iCloud accounts on an iOS device. You are seeing this error because you are trying to create the fourth iCloud account on your iOS device (iPad, iPod or iPhone). Unfortunately it seems that all (3) iCloud accounts have been created and you can’t create a new iCloud account on this device. Restoring or resetting your device will NOT change this. Your options are to either re-use one of the accounts that you previously created, or create a new iCloud account on a different iOS device or Mac.

  • How do you disable mobile account settings/parental controls

My school had a one-to-one macbook program, but I switched schools. Now i have a heavily restricted computer. They had my account set to mobile and had parental controls enabled, so I used single user mode to create a new admin (remove /var/db/.applesetupdone and reboot) and remove them. However, even though no account has parental controls turned on, they are still enabled somewhere for all accounts, even admins. I have two questions: how do i disable mobile account settings, and where are the parental controls files located? I found some in /library/managed preferences/<account name here> , but editing these gives only temporary relief from parental controls, and they are reset when i restart. There has to be somewhere else that parental controls are flagged as on/set to sync on login. i removed the actual parental controls executables and stuff somewhere in /system but after that i couldnt open activity monitor and i didnt want to risk a reboot. please help me as this is very annoying. btw im on OS X 10.6.7

    HI,
    Try this..
Open System Preferences/MobileMe and select the Sync tab.
Deselect the box where you see: Synchronize with MobileMe. The last sync will noted at the bottom left side of the window.

  • How do i reconnect mobile account home folders after re-install?

we have problems with our server interfering with the college server. It kept changing our hostname so i had to enable DNS on the second ethernet port on xserve which prevented it from changing it but now is messing up the network as our server is being used for dns by the rest of the college. So i either need to restrict our dns to only answer queeries from specific addresses i.e my laptop and colleagues and forward all of the rest to another dns server. Or i have to re-install the osx server software and change the name to correspond with their servers given name for our xserve. The problem with re-installing it is that the students have a lot of work in their home folders which i can't loose. But i'm aware that the mobile accounts will be tied to the old domain name. Is their any tips you can give us so that i don't loose their home folders and it will sync back the client machines after i have put the new domain name on. I'm also aware that you can export the usernames from workgroup manager but not the passwords. Is there anything else i need to do so that i can just reconnect their accounts to the existing home folders after re-install? In other words i need to know the easiest way to do this to reduce dissruption to students files? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Also will i have to delete the students local folders on their imacs and sync back from the server again?

ok reinstalled everything dns seems to be working have done sudo changeip -checkhostname and it says that both names match but then i started open directory and can't seem to get Kerberos started, i've tried changing it to stand alone then back again but it does nothing. I'm wondering why this would happen? i've tried adding a kerberos record but it doesn't do it just does nothing so i don't know what i'm doing wrong. I wondered if it might be a problem with the two network cards and dns as on ethernet one it is getting the dns name xserve.xxxx.ac.uk (which matches what the college server wants to call us) but on ethernet 2 gets xserve-2.local because it tells me that it already exists on ethernet one and renames it to this. I need to set up NAT so have ethernet coming in on port one and out again on port two. I wonder if my dns is backwards as its got the 192. address the NAT uses but its linked to the ethernet port one dns maybe this is the problem. would this cause open directory not to start kerberos?

  • How do I delete mobile account which is no longer ...

A couple of months ago I closed my BT mobile account.  When l log on to MyBT to look at my landline/broadband account, the account shown first is the old mobile account so I have to reselect landline and wait for it to change.
Can I either delete the mobile account or move it to second on the list so that I do not have to keep changing?  I cannot see any way to do this.

  • How do I change a mobile account to a local account without server admin?

Our company split into two seperate companies. We moved and the server stayed. All of our machines were on the server and had portable home directories. We no longer connect to a server. And the server we were connected to is no more. So we can't access it at all. Reinstall is not an option.
I want to know if it's possible to change a mobile account back to a local account. Login takes FOREVER!! Is there anyway to fix this.
Whenever I log into my administrator account on the machine, login is very quick.
Are there some preferences I can delete or change? I went into Directory Access on my machine and unchecked the LDAPv3 and all of the other check boxes just to make sure, but it didn't have any effect.
I also tried deleting the "Mirrors" folder, but when I log back in, it's there again.

No one knows anything? I just thought it would be some preference file that I need to find and either change or delete.
If anyone knows anything, please reply. The login issue is so frustrating.

Dont just untick the LDAPv3 Plug in, you have to
select Configure and Delete the configuration, save
    the changes then quit.
    I did that.
    Navigate to /Library/Managed
Preferences and remove any preferences there.
Did that too. But whenever I log back in. They are there again.
Next lauch NetInfo Manager in /Applications/Utilities,
click on the lock and authenticate, select Config and
    delect mcx_cache.
I did this also. There were actually 2 mcx_cache folders. One in the /config/mcx_cache and another at /mcx_cache. I deleted both of them.
    Next select System Preferences >
Accounts and delete the Mobile Account thats there –
it should have Mobile Account beneath it.
This is the part I can't do because I need that account. If I delete the mobile user, I lose that account and I can't do that. Any suggestions here?

  • How do you setup a user mobile account, with the home directory stored locally and not synced to the server?

I want to be able to setup a user mobile account, with the home directory stored locally and not synced to the server.  What is the best way to do this? I am running Server 10.6 with 10.6 clients.  Open Directory will be used to authenticate and manage preferences.   Also, this one account will be used simultaneosly in a computer lab setting, so files will be stored locally in the client, hence the need to NOT sync to the server.  Any Ideas?

Then, you will see this as an option in WGM:

  • How to disable mobile account functionality?

For quite some time now I have had a mobile account because I used to use a home server in conjunction with my laptop.  Now, however, I no longer do but there seems to be no way to switch my user account back to a normal account.  Even when I try to edit the settings for the mobile account to try and just simply not sync anymore all the options are greyed out.
I'm tired of having to cancel the sync every time I log in and out of the machine.  Isn't there some way to turn this back into a normal account?
