Mobile Home logout keeps hanging

We have multiple machines that have problems logging out.
When a user logsout, the message say's logout is not possible because running app is not quiting.
Even wehen al apps are clossed. Only thing to do than is :
- hard restart from ARD
- shutting down by pressing on/off button
- quit the windowserver from the Activity Monitor

If you're managing the Portable Homes (home sync) preferences via Workgroup Manager, you need to adjust the items that are excluded on login/logout. Look in Workgroup Manager > Preferences > (select user, computer, computer group, or group) > Click Mobility. Then look in the Rules section for Login & Logout Sync. By default, ~/Library is excluded from background sync, but not from login/logout sync. (Did you exclude it there?)
Another possibility is that you're excluding ~/Library/Application Support/Sync Services, which contains the Address Book data. That item *is excluded* from login/logout sync by default.

  • Mobile homes unreliable and unstable

We are having major problems with Apple's mobile home sync. I hope you can help. I will also contact Apple support. When I hear something useful from them I will get back to this topic and add the info.
We have a studio of 20 graphical workstations and we've had issues that users did not backup their home folder/work. After a lot of discussion and contemplating we bought a new server for mobile homes. So, users have their home folder where they do all of their daily work and every morning and evening when they login and when they logout their home folder is being synced to the server so that all their latest work in on the server. The server is being backupped every night so in this way all data will be backupped and save. That was the idea…
But unfortunately mobile homes seem to be very unstable and unreliable and we are having several issues. Although people login and logout every day without any problem and homesync informs us that syncing goes fine it doesn't sync everything. All home folders are having issues. When I check the backup the most recent data is not in the home folder where it should be. When I check the home on the server it isn't there, or documents are there but not the latest. When I check the home on the workstation it is there where do user put it. When I check the sync status it says everything is OK and the latest sync is of that day. So that is (major!) issue one.
Issue two is that I've had two users complaining that they move their data around in the home folder, just doing their work, and when they log in the next day their data is on the OLD place AND the NEW place. Very time consuming for them and confusing and it is very obvious that the sync process doesn't work.
Another issue is that I've had a couple of users already complaining that when log in they get sync errors. Nothing major in most cases, a file being in use or something and the next sync it syncs without a problem. But now for 3 users it seemed that their folder had problems syncing and whatever I do, I cannot get the folder to sync again, without any clear reason in the logs. I end up deleting everything in their home on the server, delete all appropriate sync caches, preferences, the FileSync folder in the library and the .FileSync folder in home and thus creating a new sync again. Only then when I do the first sync, the syncing process starts working again.
Important to know is that every user has their own workstations and that they do not change workstations. So in that regard they have all their data in one place, THEIR workstation, and that data has to sync one-way: to the server. I could imagine that when people change stations on a regular basis it is hard for the sync system to keep up with the latest changes, but that can't be the issue here.
Any help, tips, solutions, comments, etc. etc. are very much appreciated.
Server: Xserve 2.25 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with Mac OS X Server 10.6.4
Workstations: Various iMac intel stations with Mac OS X 10.5.8 or 10.6.5

Aren't you going to run into update conflicts when someone back at the office updates files you also update when offline?
Perhaps a cellular data plan would solve your problem?

  • AppleFileServer process keeps hanging - stalls clients' AFP connections

Since moving to SL Server (first used on 10.6.4, now 10.6.6), Mac clients have been complaining of spinning beachballs when accessing the server. This appears to have gradually got worse over time, as more of the clients have been upgraded from Tiger & Leopard to SL (we're now running 6 Tiger, 2 Leopard and 8 SL clients). It's driving us nuts, as it happens frequently to all users (all designers), several times daily.
There seems to be no common trigger from the client side for the symptoms, i.e. not restricted to any one client, any one app being used, nor any particular action on their part. It can happen while opening, saving, copying or moving files from/to the server, but very intermittently, so hard to reproduce on demand.
Indeed the same hang happens on the server when I'm the only one connected to it at night, from just about any of the client Macs, whether they are SL, Leopard or Tiger. If I do a test file copy from/to the server, the AFS process will often stick at some point, though not always, even when using the same test files/folders each time. Have tried various different folder/file combinations during the tesing, with pretty much no difference in behaviour, nor any consistency.
Having searched the web, I can't turn up any hard explanation for what's happening, nor a fix. Others out there are having all sorts of hassles with AFP, SMB, etc, but all in different configs & flavours it seems.
Anyway, I did finally manage to find a correlation on the server... when any of the clients hangs during open, save or copy, the AppleFileServer process on the server shows as "stuck" in the output of the 'top' command (top -o state). There are a couple of other processes that stick sometimes, but they have no obvious hit on performance or stability (these are usually launchd, DirectoryServices & msd, and no correlation to the AFS stick as far as I've seen).
Whilst 'stuck' like this, the AFS process CPU load mostly shows as 0.0%, and eventually frees itself up, with AFP then working normally again for all users. So, there are no server or client crashes, but it can lock up for anything from a few seconds to several minutes at a time, and perhaps 30-50 times a day, during which time no-one can load, save or browse files on the server
Am now very close to doing a full re-install of SL, though I doubt it will help, as the problem's been there since I upgraded the server to a new XServe with SL 10.6.4. But first I was wondering if anyone here might have the same/similar problem, and throw any more light on it?
The Macs are used on a corporate WAN, with Active Directory logins (but the problem still happens when connecting with the server Admin a/c). Networked Home folders are not being used - all users have managed user Homes locally. Users are located in both London and Amsterdam, but the problem occurs for all.
Interestingly, am seeing similar client hangs when testing with SMB as an alternative to AFP (but didn't try that with the top command yet), so I'm suspecting this might be related to the networking layer of things, rather than AFP specifically? Not exactly a safe assumption I know, especially as thus far I can't even tell whether it's originating from the clients or the server side of things. I'd put my money on a bugged AppleFileServer app though. We didn't get this nonsense when everything was Tiger, on the same network as now.
Short of running with Tiger on old hardware (simply not an option for us), we're stuck with SL. Countless other (mostly) recurring errors showing up in the logs (as per usual with any Mac OS), but none with so vicious a payload as this. Now desperate for a solution, but little spare time to find one.
Any suggestions, or requests for more info, please let me know. Have already tried numerous avenues, including AFP access/error logs, tcpdump, Google, etc. etc., but no clear indicator I could find.
I'm no Mac geek btw, so please be gentle!

    Hi,
You are not alone with this.
We have an OD master, separate file server (AFP with Raid attached with 2000+ users, 250 mac clients and on average 100 clients connected to network homes at a time.
All caches are redirected locally, time machine and spotlight searching disabled on the servers.
Running on 10.6.4, and working with no updates or changes nicely until...
Since December (after a clean install in July) we have really noticed the well documented (but not fixed) AFP crashes. It seems to occur for us when we have a few users using InDesign CS3 ( i have no proof of this but there is a pattern emerging). Up until december we had the most stable apple server setup i have known in 5 years, whereas afp used to just lock up completely, now it just restarts itself upon error.
Apple Premium support recommended updating to 10.6.6 before they would support us on this.
10.6.6 made it worse (slower logon times and even more crashes). Eventually they recommended to stop using Adobe programmes (in an art and design college).
We are currently testing with mobile home directories on this setup.
We have been using a similar setup (smaller though) on our music tech campus but with mobile homes, with great success for over a year now, although there are only about 50 concurrent logons on average there.
Well worth looking into as i have no faith in apple fixing this as most of the new server users are using very small setups with 10 clients max (home users with mac minis??).
I will keep you posted on how i get on because this really is a show stopper for us several times a week and it is really embarrassing for me to say to the customers i dont know what to do.
    Regards,
    Kev

  • Please help! Safari keeps hanging/not responding and freezes everything else up.

I've got a mid-2009 MacBook Pro running OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and Safari (5.1.9) keeps hanging/crashing. I'm afraid I'm not very good with these things so I'll just have to tell the story...
It's happening when I start up Safari, either the home page (Google) doesn't fully load and the pinwheel appears, or it loads but as soon as I try to search or use bookmarks the pinwheel appears. I'm unable to quit Safari, open or close Finder or any software, and it won't shut down normally either. I've tried using Cmd-Option-Esc to Force Quit but the pinwheel appears again and nothing happens. The only option left is to do a hard shut down. After repeating this 5 or 6 times it eventually lets me use Safari, but will almost always hang again unexpectedly at some point during the day. I know this isn't the best way to deal with it but I don't know what else to do!
I'm sorry if this question has already been asked and answered, but because I don't have an error report I don't know whether my issue is the same and don't want to start messing with things when I'm not sure what I'm doing. Thanks in advance for your help!
P.S. The unexpected hanging and freezing started while I was running Leopard and an older version of Safari. I tried to back up and reinstall the OS but my optical disk drive wouldn't read the disk, so I had to take it to an Apple store where they couldn't find anything wrong but installed Snow Leopard and hoped that fixed the problem. It didn't, and it's since started happening on start up, as described above.

Open Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then click Verify Disk.
If the disk needs repairing, you will need to use the install disc(s) that came with your Mac.

  • Why my itunes keep hang on syncing backup?

I had tried all troubleshoot but i still having trouble with my itunes.
I cant sign in to Itune store & when I tried to sync it keep hang on part 2 ( backing up )

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

  • Mobile Home

After having a lot of initial trouble with OSX server, I'm giving it a second chance and have been setting up my network users.
I'll have 6 primary users who each tend to use the same computer each day, but definitely will end up using some of the others.   So, I thought that putting a mobile home on their primary computer might be smart.  would give me a backup of sorts in case the server was ever down.  but, is this possible?  to setup their account to only give them a mobile home on 1 computer and for them to use their regular server based network account if they log in anyplace else.  second, is this smart, or is it asking for trouble?

Network user accounts with mobile home sync is perfect for laptop users. They use their laptop and only their laptop where they can come and go from the office as they please. Mobile home sync provides them with a local copy of their account so that their environment is preserved when they don't have access to the server. It works just like any any other local user account other than it syncs periodically, or not, with the corresponding network user account on the server the laptop is bound with. The ONLY time the mbile account on the laptop matches what is on the server is after a logout sync. At no other time are they identical (even then they're not but it's close enough to not cause data issues).
Network user account however have only the one copy of the account… on the server. Because of this a user can log in and out of their account from any computer they choose.
FWIW I use a network user account with mobile home sync for my own user account on an rMBP.

  • Help -- OS X keeps hanging

    Hi guys,
One of my accounts keeps hanging on me when I try to do certain things (like open a pdf document or open any of hte MS office apps), and I have to restart the whole computer. I was told it is a software problem. I have tried updating my software, and the problem seems worse than ever; in the past I could wait 5 minutes for word to load, but now it just refuses to load.
    Any suggestions?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Thanks for your advice; how do I go about doing that?
Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, and enter ~/Library/Preferences/ as the folder's location. Select the plists for those applications, and then drag them to the desktop. If the system works properly without them, drag them to the Trash and empty it.
How do I transfer all my files and preferences here?
To transfer over your files, move them to the /Users/Shared/ folder, and then log in from the new account. Drag them from the /Users/Shared/ folder to your current account's home folder while holding down the Option key. You should not move over your preferences until you've isolated which file or files is responsible for your issues, as it may cause the same problem to occur in the new account.

  • Alternatives or Solutions to Mobile Home Folders

    Hello,
I have been using Mobile Home Folders for a while and I can not stand the errors and files that it does not sync any more. Are there any solutions to fix those errrors or an alternative? Even if it just sync the Mail library, Mail is destoryed.
    Thanks,
    Steven T.

The best option is to sync at only login and logout.
How many computers do you have?
An option to sync is to use a backup appliction like Archiware Backup2go. It has the following advantages:
1.You have one list wher you can see if all computers are backed up or not. Some of my clients computers suddenly doesn't sync anymore for unknown reasons and I have no way of knowing from a central point.
    2. You can easily backup your clients portable computers when they are out of office.
    3. No more time spending logging in on AD connected computers, which can take minutes for the users.
It is not exaclty as easy to restore a users home folder as it was, ie you need to install an application first and set it up and then restore.
In my case I set up regular users as AD/OD mobile sync, the management who usually have less understanding of waiting times etc is set up to backup using third party applications instead. Saves my lot of headace.

    How can i do that?
To hide Personalize page link i know one profile value is there
FND: Personalization Region Link Enabled if i set it to No,Personalize page link will not come but Requirement is They want only this links to be not rendered on this particluar page,For other pages, link should come.
Is there any property at page level, which i can set?
    Can anbody throw some points?
    Thanks
    Hitesh

No you don't need to change the layout all what u need is to implement the following code
    OAPageLayoutBean page = pageContext.getPageLayoutBean();
// You must call prepareForRendering() if the following code is
// included in a pageLayout controller. If you add it further down
// in the layout hierarchy, the menus will be fully processed so you
// don't need to do this.
    page.prepareForRendering(pageContext);
    OAGlobalButtonBarBean buttons = (OAGlobalButtonBarBean)page.getGlobalButtons();
    buttons.setRendered(false);
    that's it
    keep it up

  • Apple support keeps hanging up on me whenever I phone. What gives?

I can't get any help with my apple tv because support keeps hanging up on me when I phone.
How do I get flickr to find my user account on flicker so I can add it to my contact? Apple tv can't find it but safari can. What gives?

I tried entering my username and email but nothing worked. I could find my user account in safari by searching for people but apple tv had no such option. The only option I had in TV was to search and there was no selection to search for people.
Then Flickr suddenly decided to find my user account on TV (obviously a problem with the Flickr website that took ages for it to update my changes to make my account visible to public which I didn't know I had to do because it wasn't obvious). I'm still waiting for hotmail to receive 20 odd files I sent to it last night which haven't shown up yet.
I phoned support twice and each time they hung up on me. By the third time, (waiting on the phone for quite a while), finally TV was able to find my user account so I hung up on them for a change.
I also spent several hours trying to get help from our useless Shaw operator because they can't do anything to report problems with the phone connections. So I still don't know why I was hung up on by apple support although this has happened on other occassions and they never called back to find out why I was disconnnected.
Then lastnight I couldn't upload files to Flickr because the FotoFox plug in on Firefox kept crashing when trying to log in. More problems with Flickr??? I know I am over my limit on uploads to Flickr but I should at least be able to log in.
I was trying to upload my eye-fi card photos to the web so TV could run a screen saver of the new photos. This became a problem because the files were uploaded to mobile me and placed in a folder labelled with the date instead of not labelling the folder with a date (which I had selected). Then I discovered that TV's screen saver does not check for new files very often when running the screen saver which meant have to restart the screen saver so it would display all of the uploads to mobileme. So to make an already long day even longer... eye-fi support marked down a suggestion for future updates to have the option of saving the photos to the same folder on the web so I would be able to automatically have the screen saver select the newest photos. So TV needs to be checking the web more often for new files when running the screen saver in order for this all to work.

  • Syncing 10.6.2 mobile home to Exchange 2007 SMB share fails

I am having issues with Mac OS X 10.6.2 client and mobile homes hosted on an Exchange 2007 server where syncronisation of data between the mobile user's home directory at login and logout fails. This problem only seems to exist with 10.6 clients as reverting a client to 10.5 results in a problem free experience.
    To summarise:
My client is bound to AD successfully (a DSCL confirms that this is the case and I can browse all the AD users).
Inside 'Directory Utility', 'Create mobile account at login' is ticked, along with 'Use UNC path from Active Directory to derive network home location', using SMB.
When a newly created user in AD logs into the Mac, login is immediately successful and the user is notified on when their AD password will expire. Immediately afterwards, the user is asked if they would like to create a mobile account, which if accepted will prompt a sync to start and the account is logged in.
As soon as the account is logged in and the desktop appears, the user is notified that there is a problem syncing:
    Application Support
    Audio
    Calendars
    Compositions
    Favourites
    Font Collections
    Input Methods
    Keychains
    ByHost
    com.apple.scheduler.plist
    com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist
    iMovie
Once these errors are cleared, the SMB 'sharepoint' is mounted on the desktop.
A check of 'Ticket Viewer' shows that the machine has received a Kerberos ticket.
At this point I have visually checked that the user's home directory structure has been created on the SMB sharepoint specified in AD and it has. Obviously the files and folders specified in the error messages have not been created.
If the user logs out, the sync stalls with the only option being to manually stop the sync to successfully log out.
If the user logs in, the sync again stalls. Stopping the sync allows the user to login.
If I change a user from a mobile home to a network home something interesting happens…
The user can login, no visible problems
Opening an app and changing the apps default settings does not generate a .plist file in ~/Library/Preferences
If I copy a file from an external flash drive to any folder in the network user's home directory a 'disk is full' message appears despite the client machine correctly showing that there is 143GB of storage space available on the SMB volume.
This issue has been causing me major frustrations as it has been a problem for every build of 10.6 I have tested. Does anyone have any clues as to why this may be happening?

  • 15' Macbook Pro keeps hanging

My Macbook keeps hanging, it happens every few minutes, sometimes it can happen 3 or 4 times within a minute.
I've used Etrecheck and copied the results below.
Paragon NTFS seems to be a problem, I thought i had already uninstalled it but apparently not. I have tried reinstalling it and then uninstalling it again, but i can't get rid of it. Any ideas?
Also, what is the system launch daemon?
Finally, should i worry that there are 11 errors on the Hard drive. Disk utility says it is fine.
    Thanks,
    Ben.

Finally, should i worry that there are 11 errors on the Hard drive.
Yes.  The drive could be failing.  First and foremost make sure you have a current backup of your hard drive.
Next, as John pointed out uninstall MacKeeper and keep away from it from now on.  Linc Davis posted excellent instructions for removing MacKeeper:

"MacKeeper" is a scam with only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
    First, back up all data.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
If you have incompletely removed MacKeeper—for example, by dragging the application to the Trash and immediately emptying—then you'll have to reinstall it and start over.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the other functional components of the software will be deleted. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.
☞ Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
☞ Let MacKeeper delete its other components before you empty the Trash.
☞ Don't try to drag MacKeeper from the Dock or the Launchpad to the Trash.
☞ Don't try to remove MacKeeper while running in safe mode.
As for the HD errors Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair the disk several times.  Also repair disk permissions. Reboot normally and rerun Etrecheck to check for the HD errors.

Why my MacBook Air keeps hanging on System Preferences and Settings whenever I attempt to open it ?

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. Step 1 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.” While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin. Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem? After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it. *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. Step 2 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. *Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Mobile Home problem with Magic Triangle

So I have been setting up a magic triangle for the past few days with an OSX Lion server.  I believe it is working properly.  The server is running OD and is bound to my AD.  I have made an OD group which contains my AD users, and I have set that OD group to have limited application preferences (one of them is to block the App store).  All my users have MacBook Airs which they will take off-site, so I enabled mobile home folders in the AD bind and in the OD group mobility settings (with confirmation required).
When I tested it today, with Airs running 10.7.4, here is what happened.
When the system was on the network, it would log a user in, ask to create the mobile account, and successfully create it.  Once logged in they were limited to the application preferences that I set on the server.  I considered this a complete success.
When I disconnected them from the network, I had expected that they would still be able to log in and the system would fuction the same way with the exception that they would not sync their changes until they were back on-site.
    Instead...
When the same user trys to log in it says the AD server is unavailable and then logs them in anyway.  However, once they are at the desktop, none of the permissions are in place.  They can go to the app store, or do anything else they feel like.  Once they are back on the network, all the server based preferences reappear and lock the system down.
    So my questions are:
    1. Should a mobile account based system compain that it cant find the AD domain when offsite?
    2.  Why is it not checking some cached verison of the permissions and locking down the notebook when offsite?  I can tell that it is caching the user name and password (as loging in as a user the air has never seen before will simply give a login error), as it will let them in, but it is not holding any preferences.
    3.  How can I prevent users from simply disconnecitng from the network to bypass all my server based policies?
    Hope someone can help

    Hi,
I'm having a similar problem with exactly the same setup, our clients are 10.7.4 wired not wireless the OD server is 10.7.4 and the clients are authenticating via an AD 2008 R2 domain.
We've had this scenario in the past running 10.5 and 10.6 without any problems but with 10.7.4 the clients' MCX settings are lost when they're not connected to our network. It seems to only lose the settings applied to user groups but not computer groups.
At this moment in time I don't have an aswer I'm still looking, have you found a solution?
I know configuration profiles are the way forward and in the future I'll move over to them but they don't seem to work that well with PHD's at the moment.
If anyone has any thought on this it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jay.
