Monitor interface vlan with ASA 5505 in HA Active/Standby Deployment
Hi,
I doing HA Active/Standby Deployment with two ASA 5505. ASA documents mention that it will monitor all physical interfaces itself to decide a failover. But in my case I configure vlan interface instead of physical interface. My inside interfaces in each ASA connect to two diferent Switches. My question is if one inside physical interface (lead to one switch) down, does the failover occur? I suspect it does not, but I would like to make sure before doing HA.
Any replies will be appreciated.
Hi, I usually instead of doing a cross-connect on the inside leave it to something like A-to-A and B-to-B if the switches are not doing VSS or VPC. So I would just connect eth0/7 from ASA-A to SW-A and similar on ASA-B. This makes it cleaner.
You can then control if you want to failover if the PO goes down or any 1 of the 2 interfaces in the PO go down.
I am not saying that your above design is invalid, but I have usually done this in the past.

Problem with ASA 5505 VPN config
Hi to all,
I have a problem with ASA 5505 remote access vpn. I have site-to-site VPN and I need that my VPN clients can access IP subnets that I have behind site-to-site VPN. All that I have tried I get and error to my log “Flow is a loopback”.
So what I need : for example I need that vpn client with ip 10.0.0.1 can go to 192.168.1.2
My config:
access-list Test_splitTunnelAcl standard permit host 10.0.2.3
access-list Test_splitTunnelAcl standard permit host 10.0.2.4
access-list Test_splitTunnelAcl standard permit 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
access-list nonat_outside extended permit ip 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
ip local pool VPN_Client_Pool2 10.0.0.1-10.0.0.200 mask 255.255.255.0
nat (outside) 0 access-list nonat_outside
nat (outside) 1 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0
vpn-tunnel-protocol IPSec
split-tunnel-policy tunnelspecified
split-tunnel-network-list value Test_splitTunnelAcl
Site-to-Site:
crypto map outside_map 3 set peer 195.233.x.x
access-list outside_3_cryptomap extended permit ip object-group DM_INLINE_NETWORK_2 object-group DM_INLINE_NETWORK_4
object-group network DM_INLINE_NETWORK_2

network-object 10.0.3.0 255.255.255.0
object-group network DM_INLINE_NETWORK_4
network-object host 192.168.2.70
network-object host 192.168.3.55
network-object 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
I hope that someone can post an answer and solve my problemA few things are required:
1) You don't need the following 2 lines, so it can be removed:
nat (outside) 0 access-list nonat_outside
nat (outside) 1 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0
2) On the ASA, you need to configure:
same-security-traffic permit intra-interface
3) Object group: DM_INLINE_NETWORK_2 needs to include 10.0.0.0/24
4) On the remote lan-to-lan end, the crypto ACL also needs to include 10.0.0.0/24 as the destination subnet.
5) The NAT exemption (NONAT) on the remote lan-to-lan end also needs to include 10.0.0.0/24 as the destination subnet.
Hope that will resolve your problem. -
Good morning,
I'm having the following problem. I configured a ASA 5505 with VPN and a VPN Remote Access Site-to-site. Everything is working, but when I reload the ASA does not work anymore VPNs, Remote Access error 412 and the Site-to-site does not connect more to solve, I have to reset and reconfigure the ASA. This is happening dopo updating the ASA, I have version 842-k8 and asdm645-106.
Does anyone have any idea what can be?
Thank you.

Remote Access VPN Problem with ASA 5505
After about ~1 year of having the Cisco VPN Client connecting to a ASA 5505 without any problems, suddenly one day it stops working. The client is able to get a connection to the ASA and browse the local network for only about 30 seconds after connection. After that, no access is available to the network behind the ASA. I tried everything that I can think of to try and troubleshoot the problem, but at this point I am just banging my head against a wall. Does anyone know what could cause this?
Here is the running cfg of the ASA

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!I made the change that you requested by moving the VPN pool to the 192.168.3.0 network. Unfortunately, now traffic isn't flowing to the inside network at all. I was going to make a specific route as you suggested, but as far as I can see the routes are already being created correctly on the VPN client's end.
Here is the route print off of the computer behind the (test) client:

Hi. I have an ASA 5505 configured for Transparent Mode. The Outside interface connects to a router (RV042). The router manages DHCP. With the 5505 in the system, all computers can connect to the internet and to each other, except for a few. The problem computers can be made to work if they are set to a specific address, rather than automatically assigned by the router. Some of the iPads work correctly, some do not. At least one Apple Notebook cannot connect even if I enter a static address.
Consulting the documentation, I found that DHCP traffic (UPD Port 67 and 68) needed to be enabled via rules for the Inside and Outside interfaces. I did that in ASDM but now nothing works.
I have pulled the 5505 out of the system and restored it to the configuration that worked for most of the computers.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can pull a "show" run from CLI if it is useful.
Thanks...Understood. I tried adding the "inside_out extended permit ip any any" command, but it made no difference. Because the implicit rule (permit ip traffic to any less secure interface) is still in the access list table, it would seem the additional extended rule is not needed.
When I first received the 5505, it had an older version of firmware. At the time, when I entered any rule in ASDM it deleted the "less secure" implicit rule, which then broke the system since there was no path for internet traffic from inside to outside, as you have stated. With the newest firmware release, however, when I enter a rule, the "less secure" implicit rule does not go away.
So, with help from the folks here I have made progress. Right now the issue is that when the 5505 in Transparent Mode is between the router and user computers, the computers cannot reliably get addresses that are auto-assigned by the router.
Looking through the logs displayed on ASDM, I noticed the following curious statement:
"6 Mar 31 2014 07:16:42 fe80::1131:41c2:3627:8339 63575 ff02::1:3 5355 No management IP address configured for transparent firewall. Dropping protocol UDP packet from outside:fe80::1131:41c2:3627:8339/63575 to inside:ff02::1:3/5355"
However, I have configured a management IP address, and it is listed in the "show" document that I posted yesterday:
interface BVI1
ip address 192.168.1.10 255.255.255.0
So, I am confused.
I appreciate the help. I am new to the 5505, although I participated as a "friendly" in the ASA program some years ago. I recall a similar problem with that setup. Regrettably, I can't remember how we fixed it...

DNS Server problems with ASA 5505
Hi guys,
we setup a new ASA 5505 which is mainly used as our VPN gateway. The ASA is configured and controlled by our ISP (and this is where the problem starts )) and they somehow cannot manage to get the VPN settings really working.
So, here is our problem.
our machines(Windows 7) are configured to get the network settings through DHCP (Windows 2012 Server).
Before I connect with AnyConnect to our VPN gateway, the DNS Server setting in the network settings for the adapters(IPv4) are set to 'dynamic'
When I now connect, this setting is changes to a statc entry (which is our DNS server).
When disconnecting, it is not reverted back, which means I have to do this always manually.
What I do not understand is the fact, that the DNS server is set for all the adapters, shouldtn't it be only set to the anyconnect adapter?.
The interesting thing is, that when I connect to a different ASA, this does not happen. The ISP is now saying, that the machines are configured exactly the same and that they cannot reproduce, but I can't believe this.
This issue shows up at every machine which connects to our vpn, so it is not only a single machine which might be misconfigured.
Do you have any idea what might cause this issue?
btw, the second ASA (which works) is from our partner company, so we cannot simply copy the config
THanks in advance
PatrickNice to see someone from BT has addressed your issue
I have this exact same problem, seems completely bizarre, I'm pretty sure I had the same problem with the original home hub (i have the latest one now). Can you confirm whether the problem does affect anyone with a bt home hub and not just the one that the dyndns is pointing at? I'll try and confirm by hitting your domain from my home connection. -
X3500 wont work in Bridge mode with ASA 5505
Hi Everyone, I am currently running Linksys X3500 v1.0.0 and plan to use ASA 5505 as a PPPoE client. While PPPoE connection is working fine when i configure the linksys for PPoE, but When I configure the ASA 5505 to act as PPPoE client I'm unable to get the Linksys get the Internet up and running. I have opened support ticket with Cisco and per them X3500 is unable to provide PPPoE details in bridge mode. Cisco Ticket # 62968611 (PPPoE connection not working) The error on Cisco console is - asa5505# PPPoE: send_padiSnd) Dest:ffff.ffff.ffff Src:c8b3.735d.4e13 Type:0x8863=PPPoE-Discovery PPPoE: Ver:1 Type:1 Code:09=PADI Sess:0 Len:12 PPPoE: Type:0101VCNAME-Service Name Len:0 PPPoE: Type:0103:HOSTUNIQ-Host Unique Tag Len:4 PPPoE: 00000002 PPPoE: padi timer expired Can Linksys help.. What's the issue. Regards, Sumit
Hi! I'm not so familiar with the Cisco ASA 5505 device. If you set your X3500 to a Bridge Mode, it will not give any PPPoE mode details and vice versa. Which of the two devices would you like to connect to the ISP's connection, is it the X3500 or the ASA 5505?

Problem with ASA 5505 SSL login
I have an ASA 5505 that is hosting a SSL VPN. The user can not login. They receive login error. To the best of their knowledge, this problem started after the office Domain Controller was rebuilt. I have looked on ASA and in AD and cannot seem to trace the issue. Any ideas?
David,
In order to understand why LDAP is not working run a "debug ldap 255" and then try to login or run a AAA test.
Attach the output to find out the issue.
Please check this out as well, to make sure that you have the correct settings:

ASA failover with 1 AIP SSM in Active/Standby?
I have a customer with two ASAs; in Active/Standby. They want to purchase one AIP. Will failover (without the AIP functionality) to the Standby work if the AIP is configured for Promiscuous mode? Thanks, Bob
The only connection to the SSM that can be done internally through the ASA is a "session". This is an internal telnet to the SSM and can be used to access the SSM's CLI.
This is very usefull when you manage your SSM directly through the CLI.
However, most customers prefer to use a graphics based tool like IDM, ASDM, or CSM for managing the configuration of the SSM, and prefer to use a graphics based tool like IEV or CS MARS for monitoring of the alerts from the SSM.
All of these graphics based tools need network access to the SSM through a web port (https on port 443 by default). Access to this port is not allowed internally through the ASA direct to the SSM.
All web connections must be made to the External Management interface of the SSM.
If you are not using all 4 of your ASA interfaces you could choose to wire the External SSM interface directly to one of your ASA interfaces, and create a small subnet for the ASA and IPS IP Addresses. So then all external connections to the SSM would be routed into the ASA, then out of the ASA, and into the external port of the SSM.
That subnet of just the ASA and SSM could be made using a network reserved for local IPs (like a 10, or 172, or 192 network) and then use NAT/PAT for translation on the other network interfaces of the ASA.
But it does still require that wire connected to the external port of the SSM. -
We have a CME 4.0 setup and getting ready to configure VLAN's for Voice and data. Our LAN gateway is ASA 5500 security appliance. Do we need a router behind the ASA appliance to do VLAN trunking?
or can the ASA appliance do VLAN trunk?
We use 4503 Chassis for Core and 3560 switches for other buildings.
We use 3845 Router with CME 4.0. Do we make this the LAN gateway and configure default GW on this router as the ASA appliance?
Thanks
ADHi,
You may configure the very CME Router as the InterVLAN Trunking device. If the phones are directly connected to the CME Router, nothing has to be done to the ASA configuration. Remember to configure the CME Router and the phones´ports in the switch as trunk ports.

How do I block pings from the outside to the ASA 5505 outside interface?
I was asked to block pings from the internet to the outside interface of our ASA-5505 firewall. I found a post that said to enter "icmp deny any outside", however that does not do it.
I created an ACL to try and do the trick, also to no avail:
access-list outside_in extended permit icmp any any echo-reply
access-list outside_in in interface outside
access-group outside_in in interface outside
Anyone have a clue what I'm doing wrong? I'm not the firewall guy as you can tell. :/
Thanks in advance...
Block / Deny ICMP Echo (Ping) on Cisco ASA Outside Interface
Most networks that you protect with a Cisco ASA device, will probably want to deny ICMP (maybe not all ICMP types, but a lot of network admins will want to block ICMP Echo, etc.) on the outside interface. This will make the network harder to find through external enumeration, but not impossible.
ASA5505(config)#icmp deny any outside
You will deny ICMP on the outside interface, but if you include ICMP as a protocol in the default global policy map, you can ping from the inside to any host on the outside, and it will be permitted back through the ASA, as it knows about the previous ICMP “connectionYou are allowing echo-reply, thus it will reply to a ping
try this ACL:

Asa 5505 transparent firewall issue
hi i am having uc560 with voice and data vlan and i am having 3560 layer3 switch and my network is working fine the dhcp for voice and data both are running in uc560.
now i add asa 5505 between uc560 and switch in transparent mode means from uc560 to asa 5505 outside interface and from asa inside interface to switch,
i conigured vlan1 -- inside and vlan 2 as outside in asa 5505
in my uc 560 data is vlan 1 and my voice is vlan 100.
when i connect my network with transparent mode firewall no dhcp amd no phones are working . but if i remove asa and i connect with uc560 to switch everything is fine.
is there anyway to work multiple voice and data vlan in asa 5505 transparent mode.hi rojas,
here is my problem,
my internet and voice all connected in the uc 560 so wat i am doing i am connecting firewall outside to uc 560 trunk port and the from inside to my switch.
when i connec to my switch it is giving message inconsistant vlan and it is port is blocked. and my phones are not working.
my data vlan1 is 192.168.123.x
and my voice vlan100 is 10.1.1.x
and the firewall ip 192.168.123.3 -
Dear all
i have a problem with ASA 5505
i have three vlans : Inside, Guest, Outside
the Inside's vlan network is 172.16.100.0 255.255.252.0
Guest is 192.168.1.0 255.255.252.0
Outside is 78.100.86.70 255.255.255.252
i am able to ping from Guest and inside vlans to outside
but i can't get internet from outside (the dns from the ISP 212.77.192.59, 212.77.192.60)
i configured for the guest vlan a PC-DHCP server, it's configured DNS it's working fine.
i am getting ip and dns from the DHCP server to my PCs i still can't get the internet
here the running configuration

please helpCan you ping your default gateway from the asa?
You should be able to ping 8.8.8.8 from the asa of not then check your ip address for the outside interface and then the default route.
Let me know.

I add VLAN and interface vlan with no shutdown command on MSFC but when i put show ip interface brief comand I have down and down. What cause this problem ??
I guess I should have been more clear in my answer but didn't want to cause confusion.
Now I have not tried this lately on a catos box so it may be different
If a port is down/down it means there is no entry in the vlan database for it. It normally also means that there is no port assigned to that vlan also but you can accomplish this by assigning a port and then deleteing the vlan database. Either way you will get a down/down condition.
Once you add the vlan to the database the interface will go UP/DOWN. This means there is no active access port on the switch and the vlan is not allowed on any trunks that may be up.
Once a vlan becomes active either on a trunk or access port it goes to up/up
Part of the confusion with this is that cisco adds entries to the vlan database automatially when you add access ports to a unkown vlan.
The problems come when someone sees this down/down condition on a switch and checks that they allow all vlans on a active trunk port and it still doesn't work. In this case all you do is add the vlan database entry and it will come up.
