Monitoring log-ins using tail command

I have a lab full of eMacs that are logging in very slowly (Network Home Directories) I would like to monitor the log-in process by ssh'ing into the "problem machines" and monitoring the process by using:
tail -f
but what should I be running the tail command against? I want to see what is happening when the student hits return.

The logins are stored in a binary file /var/log/wtmp. Since it's binary you cannot easily tail this file to get the information you're after.
In any case, even if you did, the file would only get updated at the end of the login sequence. It wouldn't tell you much about what's going on in the intermediate time.
You might be better off using other tools such as tcpdump to monitor network traffic between the client and the home directory server. It would at least give you an idea of which machine(s) the client is talking to and any noticeable delays in responses from the server.
The other place to look is the home directory server itself. How many active clients does it have? What's its network connection? You might just find the the home directory server (or its network link) is saturated and therefore monitoring from the client side won't tell you much.

Seems to be caused by a corrupted Visual C++ installation (multiple versions can be installed side-by-side; SxS).
You can try to use the sxstrace.exe tool to see if you can find which files are missing or corrupted and (re)install missing Visual C++ libraries.

Single user mode . using tail -f (command not found)

Have an empty computer with no systems disk as the installation CD start up will not go past the grey screen with the rotating logo before the panic crash page comes up and tells me to restart the computer.
Trying to boot into single user mode and then use the command tail -f to see contents of some of the logs... BUT I get the reply tail command not found ????

If the hard drive is empty, then you can only boot from the CD. Regardless of whether or not it has "tail," it won't do you any good. There are no logs.

Tail command to read httpd log from remote machine

does anyone know how to read the httpd log file using the tail command froma remote machine?
i have a mac using osx sharing the internect connection to other machines. this machine has the http server running on it and i would like to check the httpd log file (from this server) from my computer in the same LAN.

As Ashish rightly said, you need to use ftp/scp.
You can create a shell script on unix machine. Which shall copy the file from Windows machine to Unix machine on particular directory. Then you may need to change permissions of the file.
Once that is done, same shell script can call procedure in oracle.
You can schedule this shell script in Crontab to run at specified time daily, if you the timing of availability of file.

Can I monitor a Log file using EMGC 10.2.0.2?

I am thinking of monitoring my web application log file using EMGC by creating a generic service is that possible. Now we are using some shell scripts to do that but its bit difficult to maintain all these shell scripts on each of the host. Is there any in built in mechanism that enable me to monitor the log file and when a perticular pattern match I would like to send a email notification to concerned people say application admins if there is no out of box option for this do we have plugins to do this. please let me know the possibility of implementing this using EMGC or extencibility plug-ins.

I have used "Log File Pattern Matched Line Count" of host to monitor the log files and below is the pattern I have defined for the log file. But i could not find any alerts even there are so many such exceptions in the log file matching the patteren given in EMGC.
/u01/app/oracle/product/IAS904/sysman/log/emias.log;%oracle.sysman.emSDK.util.jdk.EMException;%
I have even add the log file in agent_home/sysman/config/lfm_ifiles file as given in the documentation but I could not see any alerts as expected am I doint anything wrong in my setup.

How can I set up my Mac Pro so that my wife and I can use our separate iTunes accounts? I keep getting an error message that the computer is already associated with an Apple ID even though the two accounts are associated with separate log ins!

I'm getting very confused with setting up multiple user accounts on my Mac Pro for my wife and I. We each have a separate iTunes account, and we want to keep our music libraries seaprate. I've set up two user accounts on the Mac Pro and I have my iTunes authorised and logged into my user account on my user account. Under my wifes user account (i.e. a separate log in on the computer) I'm trying to set up her iTunes account, but I can't download or play anything from the cloud - it just says "This computer is already associated with another iTunes Account" and tells me that if I 'transfer' then I won't be able to use the other one for 90 days! This is really annoying as my wife can't access music she has purchased on her iTunes account on the home machine. We're not trying to do anything dodgy, just access our music on our own accounts on separate log ins on the same machine. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi Allan, thanks for that. I've already set up a log in for my wife and that is all working fine. The problem is that when she logs in and opens iTunes and trys to associate her library with her iTunes account she gets the error message "This computer is already associated with another iTunes account". Whilst this is true, the computer is associated with my iTunes account under my separate log in, which should have nothing to do with hers. If she transfers the association to her account it will lock me out of my content on my log in for 90 days - I'm trying to work out how to associate each of the log in accounts with a separate iTunes account so we can access our music independently of one another without locking each other out. Hope that makes sense!

They can, but not at the same time.
If one user left iTunes running, and another user tries to use iTunes from a different Windows user ID, that second user will get an error message. If they really want to use iTunes, they either have to beg the first user to log in and close iTunes, or else they have to restart the computer.

Typed input on log ins, search commands are barely visible - not crisp black print. How do I fix?

I have a Windows 7 HP desk top - rather new and functioning well. My email is free from AOL - Internet connection is AT&T. In logging on to the email account it is the typical user name/password process. When I now click on email log in or other log ins - the log in data entry space caret is barely visible and the typing I enter is barely visible, but when the entry data is correct my log in is accepted. And in all my Bookmarks only the icons are visible until I rest my mouse pointer on the icon. Some time (don't know how much time) before I noticed the problem I was browsing through the display and personalization sections under the control panel. I made no lasting display changes but did review some alternative before deciding not to change anything. Perhaps it is a simple change in the font color that needs attention - but I haven't been able to figure out how to do that in what I see in the Firefox Tool Bars . Can several members of a household use the same library with different log ins

Once you have downloaded the latest version of iTunes to a computer, can different members of the same family use the same library but with different log ins or do you need different computers?

exactly:) you first gotta transfer the apps from your devices by connecting them and going to file and "transfer purchases" and it should bring the apps over
PS: do make sure that the computer is authorized for all of the purchases do this
-go to store at the very top of the page (usually up there with file,edit,view,and controls)
-choose authorize this computer
-enter the email address and password associated with the purchases you are transferring and hit authorize!!
-quick transfer and done, you guys can share whatver you transfer to the library

First my organize has Exchange on 2 site like
site A (internet facing) : 2CAS 2 MB all are Services pack1
site B (DR Site , no user active on this site) : 2CAS 2MB all are Services pack 1
so today I upgrade Exchange 2013 from SP1 to CU5 start on "site B" and I found this issue and the details is....
When I open EMS on any CU5 for query something (like get-mailboxdatabasecopystatus) the response return very slow and some query will not return at all (like get-owavirtualdirectory).
But If I using EMS on SP1. Everything is ok then I try to use EMS on SP1 connect to CU5 and try to query something. the result is
some query command cannot return for any result that are server on siteB (just some query command)
Problem
EMS on CU5 return very slow result.
EMS on SP1 still ok.
Does anyone face this problem before for CU5??? Please help me figure this out. Thank you

Have you used the above cmdlets to check your Exchange server health?
"all other command that I ran on EMS didn't logged on event viewer.", my environment is the same with you. I use Exchange 2013, only errors will be displayed in MSExchange Management. Actually, it is not related to slow EMS response.

This means I can't use the computer anymore. How do I fix? I tried using the Command+F2 keyboard shortcut, but it doesnt' work. It's possible that since I reinstalled the OS, it still needs to be set up, so there's only a welcome screen (but since I can't see it I'm not sure).
