Monthly Software Updates Merged to Main OS Group

I was reading
here but still am a little unclear.
My Current Layout.
OS Main Software Update Group... Example Windows 7 Software Updates.
Then I have seperate Software update Groups by Month Example... September 2014, October 2014, November 2014.... Now that I am getting ready to created December 2014 I want to merge September 2014 into my Main Windows 7 Software Updates.
My Question is What is the best way to do this?  Just edit the membership and change from September 2014 to Windows 7 Software Updates?  What about downloading and how does my Windows 7 Software Updates Package get updated?

One important factoid here (that reinforces Torsten's correct answer) is that there is no relationship whatsoever between software update group and update deployment packages. Clients are assigned updates using update groups. If an update is applicable
to a system then it will download the binary files for the update from *any* available update package. Thus, there's no reason to put update binaries in any specific package in the first place and certainly no reason to re-download them if they are already
downloaded and in an update package already.

  • Confusion as how to handle monthly software updates

I'm struggling to wrap my head around the proper way of handling software update delivery through Configuration Manager 2012 R2.  I'm hoping you guys and gals and
can set me straight.  Anyway, here is my question.
I have a ADR configured that grabs all
updates released or revised in the past 1 month.  For the month of October the ADR grabbed all updates released in October, however, it also grabbed updates that were revised in October but were originally released in September.  So, now the same
update exists in my software update groups (and same deployment package) for both September and October.  I've also had an instance in August where some updates were revised that were originally released in 2011.  In that case, I had updates existing
in my August 2014 software group as well as my 2011 group (and two different deployment packages).  What is the proper way of handling this scenario?  Does it hurt that these updates exist in multiple groups?  Should I perform some type of cleanup?
Please help me understand this.  Thanks :)

"So, now the same update exists in my software update groups (and same deployment package) for both September and October."
So? (Sorry, not trying to be harsh, just don't know how else to say it.)
There's nothing wrong with having updates in multiple groups. If a client already has it installed, then it won't do anything for that update no different for any other non-applicable update.
As for the update package, same thing. The update will only be downloaded once (if the ADRs point to the same update package) and will only de distributed to your DPs once regardless of update package.
Although keep in mind revisions are usually accompanied by new binaries so can be thought of as new and distinct updates which means what you have happening is exactly what should happen.
So, no, it doesn't hurt anything at all and no there's nothing special for you to do.

Hey Jason, thanks for the reply.  You didn't sound harsh at all.  That's exactly what I wanted to hear.  Introducing SCCM into a network when I've never used SCCM has been a learning experience.  The software update model is different
than what I'm used to with WSUS.  I was afraid I may have organized things wrong and didn't know if duplicate updates were normal behavior.  Thanks for setting me straight.  I always worry too much when it comes to these things :)

  • Monthly software updates?

Why is it that about every three or four weeks my incredible becomes useless for half a day?
It just happened again yesterday morning. I turn my phone off at night. When I got up yesterday, I turned it on and the start up took a lot longer than usual.
When I checked the phone, it was stuck on the droid "eye". I had to remove the battery and restart.
Then it got to the unlock slide bar and it had frozen again. I had to remove the battery and restart.
Next I let it sit for about an hour, then it seems OK.
The verizon tech rep said that the system is pushing updates at about 2AM. If the phone isn't on, it has to do the updates when it first gets turned on.
The last time this happened, it was about 4PM. That time I thought I had the dreaded "auto restart" problem because it kept restarting. Stopped after a few hours.
Is there a way to disable automatic updates?

That's a lot of waiting and updating bejay! The Incredible hasn't had a firmware update recently, so the only updates that may be coming to your phone would be for applications downloaded from the market. Did this trouble start after you received a message about a system update? If you go to Settings > About Phone, the most recent Software Version is Build Number: 4.08.605.15 710RD; Baseband Version: 2.15.10.12.20. If that's not showing, try selecting Check for Updates to pull the newer version through once and for all. If the trouble continues though, a reset http://bit.ly/oOaRQt will help to clear the slate and ensure the update is completed properly along with returning the phone to a more permanent working order.

  • Software Updates deployment

Working on a script to automate our monthly software updates deployments. We have an ADR that creates the software update group and the first pilot deployment, and now I'm looking at using the Start-CMSoftwareUpdateDeployment to create the other deployments.
I have everything in place except the deployment options for slow or unreliable network boundary, I want to set that to "download and install" but can't find a command for it, any ideas?

    here you go
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn151062%28v=sc.20%29.aspx
    -NoInstallOnRemote<Boolean>
Indicates whether to disallow installation of updates on remote systems. If you specify a value of $True, if the client is within a slow or unreliable network boundary, or when the client uses a fallback source location for content, then Configuration Manager
does not install software updates. If you specify a value of $False, installation proceeds.

  • Safari and Mail will not open after software update

After doing the monthly software update yesterday, my Mail and Safari programs will not open. I click on the icon in the dock or in the Applications folder and I get nothing. The icon in the dock jumps, but nothing opens. I've read several other discussions and tried dragging several files out of the library, such as plist files and history, etc., but they still won't open. The software update only updated iTunes and iPhoto and included the most recent security update. I have not tried to reload Safari. If I do that (and it works), what do I need to do for Mail? Will I lose all my emails? Can someone tell me what I can do to get both programs back working properly? Thanks!

Another approach is to reapply the 10.3.9 combined update. "Repair permissions" via Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
As far as your e-mail's are concerned, the database files are maintained in your User account>Library>Mail folder. It's very important you backup this folder periodically to external media regardless of circumstances to preclude losing your e-mails in the event of file corruption.
Best maintenance strategy is a full backup of your HD on a bootable external (firewire) hard drive. Makes life a lot easier in the event you need to revert your HD to its state prior to an System Update gone bad.

  • Windows 8.1 Hybrid Boot and Software Updates through ConfigMgr

    Hello,
I've never posted here before because I usually get all my answers from a search.  But this issue I'm finding very little information about throughout the web.
In my organization we have ConfigMgr deploying monthly software updates, usually just Security Updates, to our Windows 8.1 estate.  We have a standard 8.1 build on our machines, nothing too custom.  We have left the Hybrid Boot feature left on.
However, when deploying software updates through ConfigMgr we're seeing reboot after reboot to complete.  In some cases up to 5 restarts and so we have had to disable all reboots and reboot notifications.  Disabling Hybrid Boot allows all updates
to install after just 1 restart.  So from what I understand, a full shut down is required to apply software updates.  Can anyone tell me whether Windows 8.1 should be aware of updates it is applying and switch to a full shut down when Hybrid Boot
    is enabled?
I know this is very much a Windows 8.1 issue, however I'm interested to know whether other people deploying software updates via ConfigMgr have experienced this issue in their environments.
    Thanks for any advice.

    Hi,
Please check the article below first. It indicates the restart process in Windows 8 continues to perform a full boot cycle, without the Hibernation performance improvement .
    Quote:
    What About Restart?
When you restart the computer, that typically means that you want a completely new Windows state,  either because you have
installed a driver or replaced Windows elements that cannot be replaced without a full restart.
As a result, the restart process in Windows 8 continues to perform a full boot cycle, without the Hibernation performance improvement mentioned above.

  • HT4623 How do i update my ipad to ios5?  There is no software update button.  I cannot get new games, etc.

I need to update my ipad2 to ios5 and it has never been updated since original purchase in 2012.  There is no button available for updates when i select general.

Connect it to a computer with iTunes, select the iPad from the Devices in the left sidebar, then select Software Update from the main Summary window.  If it is an iPad 2 it will update to iOS 6.1.3.

  • I can not update a Windows Server 2008 R2 with Software Update Group in SCCM2012

    Hi all,
I got some problems with update deployments these days.
I try to configure SCCM2012 to update 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 (with Hyper-V / This server is in a cluster)
Actually i've 4 other Hyper-V servers and i would like to add one more in the cluster called Hyper-V5. To do that i need that all Hyper-V servers use the same Windows Updates.
I created a collection for my Hyper-V servers and then a Software Update Group with all needed updates (checked the list of another HV-Server).
I did a deployment on this collection using this new Software Update Group.
I checked the Sofwtare Center's logs on the Hyper-V5 server and i saw that synchronization has a successfull state.
But there is no updates installed or displayed in Sofwtare Center.
Here is some screenshots : Oh no i can't post image because ... "Body text cannot contain images or links until we are able to verify your account." waiting to be verified since months.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Adding Software Updates to Software Groups After Deployment

    Hi all -
I went through and created 3 software update groups (for 2013, 2014, and 2015), and then distributed all three of them to a certain collection (and to all DPs). After that point, I then realized I had forgotten a number of updates for each software
update group. I downloaded the software updates and edited their membership so they would be a part of the existing software groups. When I did that their statuses said they were deployed. However, when I look at content distribution I don't see
anything changing. Almost like the new updates didn't go out to the DPs.
Do you need to redeploy the software update groups after adding new software updates? Or should this automatically distribute the new updates as part of the existing deployments.
Kind of unrelated, and not really part of my main question. Is there a best practice on the maximum number of software updates for a group? My largest group has 632 updates. I realize the dependency on reporting and all that, I am purely speak from a performance
    or issues best practice.
    Thanks,
    --Julius

A software update group and a deployment package are two different things. When you download the updates, you download them to your deployment package. To look at the status of that process you can look at
Content Status node in the console or the distmgr.log
    file.
The best-practice maximum number of updates per update group is a 1000, see also:

  • Software update group problem on Primary SUP

    Hi All
I hope someone can help me with the following issue it is related to SUP
We have an environment of a CAS and a Primary Site ( I know not an ideal situation ;-))
We have the SCCM 2012 Sp1 version with no CU update.
We have two separate SUPS installed at separate servers one connected to the CAS site and one connected to the Primary site.
The one connected to the CAS site connects to the internet and the one connected to primary sync’s with the other one.
Everything works perfect but after the implementation of the new updates from the month April we have some problems.
When I connect to the CAS site with the configuration manager console every update in the software update group have a green icon ( some are superseded and have an orange icon) and the updates all have the status of downloaded Yes and deployed Yes.
When I connect to our primary site with the configuration manager console some updates in the same update group (as mentioned above) have a red icon and have the status of deployed yes and downloaded NO.
    Strange !!!
I created a new update group and new package downloaded all updates again and the same thing happens as above.
The updates KB2837579 , KB2553444 , KB973688 , KB2687567 are correct when I connect to the CAS but when I connect to the Primary they have status downloaded NO. Al other updates 150 are correct on both sites.
There is no problem with the Sync between the SUPs when I check Software Update Point Sync status and wsyncmgr.log.
I am lost in this one I hope someone can help me with this .or can help me where to troubleshoot
    regards
    Johan

Yes, even I've seen these kind of issues several times even after CM12 R2 upgrade. I had these issues normally (ONLY) with Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 server patches. It seems to me like when you DON'T have Win XP and Windows Server 2003 machines
in Primary server DB then we're facing this issue. But I'm not very sure. This is just a thought.
Primary server CM12 console - When you look at software update group or Package then in the “summary” there would one or more  patches show as “not downloaded”
But when you take a look at the properties of the patch and look at  “Content information”, it says downloaded = yes

  • Software Update Group not created...?

    SCCM 2012 R2
So I'm working on patching up our servers and am not sure how the Software Update Group gets created.
I created an Automatic Deployment Rule for the group of machines I want to patch and chose to Add to an existing Software Update Group.  However, it never prompted me for what group to update.  I checked under Software Update Groups and only have
ones from our workstations that have been in there for a while.
Do I have to manually create the Software Update Group for the servers to use and if so, where do I do that in the Confir Manager program?
Also, on a side note, when I view my ADRs, a couple of them say: Auto Deployment Rule results exceeded maximum number of updates.  Not sure if that's when I need to somehow break them up into Monthly groups or something like that?
I know there's a hard limit of updates per something but this was all originalyl configured by an external consultant so no one here is fully up to speed on all the nuances yet.
    Thanks!

OK, so my ADRs are setup so that they all run on a certain date and then the have a 0, 7, or 14 day delay on when the patches become available so certain groups patch each weekend.  Since they all failed with the Too many patches error, I need to redo
them.  If I make the changes and then do a "Run Now" to force them to update, will it start the 7 day delay over from when I do the Run Now or will that still go from the original date?
And if I have the patches set to Deadline immediately, but have maintenance windows setup as Saturday 1AM - 11PM, and do not have the checkboxes checked to allow them to go outside a maintenance window, I can still do the Run Now any time and all the patches
will then install at 1 AM on Saturday.  right?  Just don't want things to start installing in the middle of the day and mess everything up. :)
    Thanks!

  • ADR Removes updates from existing Software Update Group

I'm working on using SCCM for Software Updates, was previously only using WSUS. I think I've got everything configured and I can deploy updates successfully. So now I'm working on automating things with some ADRs. The problem I'm running into is that I'm
trying to set the ADR to add updates to an existing group. Office 2007 updates in this example.  I have the search criteria in the ADR set to look for Office 2007 updates released in the last 30 days and it is set to run once a month.
So in my mind, each month it will run and add the necessary updates to the existing group, and the group will become a cumulative list.  The problem I'm having is that every time the rule runs, it seems to remove all the existing updates from that
group and only add in the updates that were returned for that run.  For example, I can set the rule to search for updates released in the last 60 days and will see 15 updates in the group.  If I change the rule to search for updates released in the
last 30 days and run it again, the group will only have 10 updates in it.  Or if I manually add updates to the group and then run the rule again, the updates I manually added are removed.  None of these are expired or superseded.  Any ideas?

The spirit of the statement is more or less correct, but as it applies to this scenario it is not. To the clients, nothing has changed. The update is part of the update group before and after. Thus, the client only knows about the newly added updates thus
there really is no client side processing churn except for the newly added updates. As for the SQL processing, that's what SQL does well -- that's the whole point of using a enterprise class RDBMS. Tip-toeing around SQL, particularly for a process that only
happens once a month, is (sorry) silly. Now, if you were to do this everyday, then yes, that's bad. Once a month, it's trivial. Do of course make sure you have a good SQL maintenance plan in place that includes re-indexing and rebuilding statistics (not the
    built-in maintenance task).

  • Deploying one software update group to multiple collections.

    Good Afternoon,
We are in the process of rolling out Windows updates to our server environment.  This will be the first rollout on a mass scale. Previously, we have rolled out to about 4 collections to test.
In a prior life, I managed deploying Windows updates using SCCM 2007. You were able to target to a deployment to a parent collection and select the option to deploy to sub-collections.
With CM2012, we have a parent folder and our collections live inside of this folder.  My question is this, how can deploy my software update group without having to create a deployment targeted to each individual collections.  Our structure looks
    like this
    Parent Folder (Production)
    Subfolder (Monthly)
    Monthly Collections
We have 43 monthly collections for production.  I would prefer to not have to create 43 different deployments.  Can you target the parent folder and include the collections?  I read another article where CM2012 did away with the use SubCollections,
but I have not been able to verify that.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.
    Thank You
    Brian Dougherty

You can still do something similar as with a top collection in CM07. In CM12 you can use the include collection. So that would mean that one collection can include multiple collections, which allows you to target only one collections. Those separate collections
can then be used for different maintenance windows (or whatever you want to do with it).

  • CS 3 worked yesterday - got software updates - now all parts merged into 1 uneditable image

Hi. I worked on a logo yesterday. This a.m. I got software updates and did it automatically. I don't know what the updates were but I just did it and then the computer restarted. Now all my parts have been merged into one un-editable un-workable image. They are not separate any more. They are not grouped, not compounded, not locked. I do not know what happened. Any ideas? Thank you for any help you can give.

Try again. I am having a lot of trouble w. the forum trying to get in with my correct user name and password. Too bad there isn't a way that I can delete the connection to my email and start from scratch. Anyway....
Yes, I am working on the master page, no layers.
I will try to run Disk Utility and reboot too.
So far I have also done a page drag and saved it out as an inex.
