More adjustments with AP2 than Capture NX?

I use a D50 and shoot in RAW+JPG mode. The colors and white balance of the RAW files in Capture NX are similar to the JPG and require little or no editing. The same RAW files in AP2 or CS3 are much darker and require adjustments. I would like to use AP2 but don't want to adjust every "keeper" image.
Is there a work around? Do all Nikon users have the same problem?
Thanks!

Conceptually what NX does is to apply your in-camera settings when you bring the raw file into its environment (doing it after the fact, rather than applying it in camera then saving to your card). When you shoot raw+jpeg, it simply retains the raw file that in-camera settings are applied to create the jpeg file.
As a Aperture and NX user, my recommendation is to decide which and how you want to use the sw. I only use NX by exception. I really like the result I get from Aperture and now that Aperture 2 saves round trip files using NX as an external editor in the same folder as the original nef files are stored, I have started edit Aperture created tiff files in NX (I use referenced master files so this was a big deal when Ap saved tiff file in its library).
What you can do, if you decide to use Aperture, is to save many of common settings as presets and apply it that way. Also lift and stamp is quite handy for series of shots done in a same settings.
From macro-workflow perspective, I import images into a folder from the card, and do a quick review for keepers versus discards using ViewNX (I used to use Bridge but it creates XMP sidecar file instead of embedding matadata into nef, if I want to tag them). VewNX also picks up the camera settings as it display nef files. Once reviewed, I move the folder to permanent location and import as referenced masters into Aperture. So I am not dealing with many deletes from Aperture and I don't have to spend lot of time adjusting images that I will not keep.
As for your comment about "Do other Nikon owners have the same problem?", well it is not a problem. It is the nature of working with raw files with sw other than that offered by the manufacture, such as NX.
One last thing. If you decide to use Aperture, take the time and really learn the subtleties of Aperture. It is a multivariable challenge. Unlike NX, where the raw files are essentially rendered as what jpeg will look like coming out the camera, you will have a lot more creative license with the image. That also means that you will need to provide more inputs and horn your technique in Aperture (or LR/ACR or any other raw developers).
Hope this helps.
Cheers

  • Performance gets worse with more adjustments

LR 3.5, Win7, 64-bit (both OS & LR - and yes, I made sure it is the 64-bit LR running), 8GB ram
When I start doing adjustments to a photo it's really fast, no problems. But the more adjustments I add (mainly adjustment brush), the slower LR gets, the worse performance gets.  It gets so bad that making a change to a slider can take 6+ seconds to see the change!
I'm making slider adjustments, using the adjustment brush a lot, and graduated filter adjustments.  I have auto mask turned off, my raw cache is 10GB, the raw file is 16.7MB.
If I switch to a different photo everything is speedy again.  Switching back and everything is slow.  Closing & reopening LR has no affect, neither does rebooting.  I haven't tried creating a new catalog and putting that one photo there but I doubt that would help.  I do not have Photoshop or any other memory/cpu intensive programs running.  I actually did try to quit everything and that didn't help.
I asked this on the NAPP forums and someone suggested:
    - Is it a Raw file or Tiff or Jpeg?
    Raw.
    - Cache may be corrupt, try to purge the cache.
That did make a difference, but it's still quite slow.
    - Delete your history?
I haven't tried this yet mainly because the I'm still making adjustments to the photo in question and I love being able to go back a bunch rather than having to start over again.  I plan on doing a bunch of similar adjustments to another photo then deleting the history and seeing if that helps.  Still, that's not something I want to be doing WHILE I'm still editing the photo.
    - Open the task manager and watch the cpu/memory.
Did this and noticed when I made ANY change on a photo with lots of adjustments, both cpu and memory went up - cpu hit 85-95% doing anything and memory climbed from the 1.8GB it had when it started to 2.8GB.  If I go to a new photo cpu stays around 40-50% and memory stays lower, around 2.2-2.4GB.  And again, the more adjustments I added, the highter the cpu and memory went.
And it isn't just this photo.  I've worked with many photos - both mine and from others - and as I add more and more adjustments (brush, sliders, etc), LR starts slowing down more and more.  I also have LR installed on my work computer and my personal computer, both share the same performance issues.  It's just when I get a LOT of adjustments made that this happens - mostly adjustment brushes.
    Any thoughts?  Thanks very much!!

    Pic4,
I would think that it's the same problem on Mac. As Lee Jay has explained "Simplistically, it has to redraw all the local adjustments every time you update a slider" these adjustments create o lot of traffic between your hard drive(s) and the memory. So - simplistic - if all the traffic has to go back and forth to the same hard drive, there's congestion. So better, divide the various LR "elements" between different physical hard drives.
Put your catalog on the external eSata - assuming that LR resides on your internal drive - and make your cache very large.
I'd like to put in a word about hard drives: Instead of choosing one (1) huge internal drive it would be better to have at least two, or better three internal drives that can be much smaller. I'd say three drives @ 250 GB give you much better performance than one drive with 1 TB.
With three drives, you'd put LR on drive 1 (C-drive), the LR catalog on drive 2, and the LR cache on drive 3. That way the system does not have to wait for one drive to finish writing before it can be read again (in simplistic terms) but the writing and reading happens simultaneously on three drives. That's the performance gain when you put the catalog, the cache and LR on different drives. It has to be different physical drives, partitions of one drive won't do it.
I would think that it's the same on a PC or on a Mac.

I am feeling so ripped off right now. I have wanted a Mac for years and believed the hype about it's stability and I have had more trouble with this Imac 2011 than I have ever had with a pc. It locks up with several software products from APP store. I have already had to have a technician to look at it and really couldn't figure out what the deal was.  I was told that the APP store software should give me no problems but the truth is that it locks up on the software. This machine is only 4 weeks old and I am using 37 g on a 1 T hard drive. There is no reason for it to be locking up. Also, when I try to use the help program, it always tells me that I am not connected to the internet even though I have used both the mail program and the browser with no problem just before that. I successfully used the help program on my pc lots of times. I did not need a $2000. plus machine to just get email. I just wanted to unload on somebody that might understand my pain and after checking out this site...I think there is a few of you out there.

I was told that the APP store software should give me no problems but the truth is that it locks up on the software.
The apps downloaded from the Mac App Store are written by third party developers, not Apple. If you have problems  with those apps you need to visit the support area for their websites. Launch the App Store, locate the app name. You should see a support link.
when I try to use the help program, it always tells me that I am not connected to the internet even though I have used both the mail program and the browser with no problem just before that
Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.helpviewer.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash. Restart your Mac, try the Help menu.
If you need help finding that file, hold down the Finder icon in the Dock then click: New Finder Window. From the menu bar top of your screen click: Go > Go to Folder. Type this in exactly as you see it here:   ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist    That will take you right to that file.
(.plist) files stores information about a particular app or in this case, the Help viewer. Often times deleting the .plist file resolves the issue.
It's fine to "unload"... we understand that you expect your iMac to be stable but there are times when things go awry. That's why we have these forums so that you can you get help.

  • Please Help :( iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?

Please Help iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?  It was fine 4 days ago and had been working with a 1gb stick in one slot and a 2gb stick, which had replaced the orignal 1gb stick that I got it with, in the other and it had shown 3gb of ram and was working just fine with that since November?  It went to sleep briefly 4 days ago while I was waiting on a customer and I came back to try to wake it up and it never would forcing me to hard boot it.  When I did that it would only go to a black screen with a solid white light on the power indicator.  Over and over again and same thing.  I read and tried every suggestion I could possibly find in this and a few other mac forums to no avail.
I finally after reading about RAM issues etc.  I decided to power off and take out the ram sticks and try them one at a time in each slot.  So I took out the 2gb stick and did the SMC reset and it would boot up and work just fine with the 1 gb of ram.  So then I went through the same process with the 2gb stick and it would not boot up only go to a black screen with white solid light again (NOT flashing).  So then I tried the other original 1gb I had replaced with the 2gb and it worked just find like the other 1gb.  So then I tried just 1gb stick in the other ram slot (back facing one) and with just the 1gb strip it booted up and worked fine.  Tried it with the other 1gb stick and once again that one too worked just fine.  So I determined it wasn't the slot itself I thought?  I then tried the 2gb in the back slot and it would not boot only go to the black screen white solid light deal like before.  So I thought well ok it's obviously the 2gb ram must have somehow went bad (even though I have only had it since November) and I thought well I will just use the (2) 1gb sticks in each slot and then that will at least give me 2gb because only 1gb really ***** LOL.  So I proceeded to go through the same shut down process installed both sticks (I always push them to I feel them click and my fingers have a nice indention on them) reset the SMC and turned the power one and.... It would only go to the black screen with white solid light on power indicator????  I went through the same above process at least 3 times and again today a few times and I can't figure it out and I tried to search and search and I couldn't find anything like what I am experiencing.....What happened?  Please help this slow Imac is killing me.  It will work with 1gb ram only nothing more?  Here are the specifics of my Imac.
It is a 20" Late 2006 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 ATI Radeon X1600 256 MB graphics card and Ram with now only 1gb (did have 3gb) and I am running OSX Lion 10.7.5
When I go to system report and go under memory it shows this:

I have some more if needed???????????????

  • Why does Acrobat Pro 9 have more bells and whistles than Acrobat Pro XI?

I have a Power Mac with Acrobat Pro 9 and it has more menus with more functions than the Acrobat Pro XI on my iMac.
I'm supposed to be migrating to the iMac and giving the Power Mac to some co-workers, but I need the functions in Acrobat 9 that I don't see in XI.
In 9 I have these menu items: File, Edit, View, Document, Comments, Forms, Tools, Advanced, Window and Help.
In XI I have: File, Edit, View, FusionPro, Window and Help.
    I know FusionPro is a 3rd party plug-in.
Do I have to do something to make them appear? Has Adobe taken them out? Did they move them?
    Primarily I'm interested in:
    Document > Crop Pages function
    Tools > Advanced Editing functions
    Advanced > Print Production functions
BTW, I don't know if this is an installation issue or not, but this seemed like the most likely forum.

In XI, all of the tools are in the RHP (right-hand panel) under tools/comments. Some tools require you to right click on the tools settings by the tools selector to allow other tools to be displayed. These tools are no longer given on the menu bar and has been the change in the Acrobat UI structure. A few tools are at times removed, but the ones you mentioned are still there.

  • Is SSH safer or more vulnerable with password auth?

I've been having a fight with the university IT people about SSH being unsafe because of the possibility of a brute-force password attack. Of course (as I explain to them) there are myriad ways to thwart this, some of which I had already taken before the fight began (only allow a short time to connect successfully, for example). (Although, I haven't been able to figure out if SSH can simply decide to refuse a connection after a certain number of failed passwords, but that's another issue..). On the other hand, I have seen a few sites in my SSH googling that hint that the RSA key authentication is less secure than password authentication.
So, my question I would like to submit for discussion is this: Is a passwordless RSA key authentication more or less secure than password authentication, and why? Or, if you would rather, under what circumstances are each method more vulnerable?

I think it really depends on the attack vector you are looking at.
Assuming mutually exclusive for the sake of this discussion (either key-based auth with password login disabled, or password login and key based auth disabled). A password-less ssh key is likely more vulnerable to an endpoint exploit -- as if an attacker has your sshkey without a password, he has access. Password-over-ssh is likely more vulnerable to a server-side exploit -- opens the password-guess vector, and if you aren't paying attention to the 'fingerprint doesn't match' message and someone hijacks your dns, you could attempt to login to a compromised system, thus giving away your password. Key-based auth would fail if they did not have your public key on the compromised server (you would still see the fingerprint difference message though).
You can do things to increase the security of the above vectors, from using a passphrase on your ssh-key and using ssh-agent (so you only have to auth once per session and it simply 'unlocks' your key, and doesn't leave it laying around open)..to using something like knockd or fail2ban on the server side.
Personally, I use a passphrase protected ssh key (along with ssh-agent), and disable interactive (password) authentication on my boxes anytime they are exposed to a public network (along with adding root to the denyusers ssh list).

I was wondering if anybody can tell me why the Apple IPhone 5  is $600 US/AUD more expensive in Australia than in the US!
    thanks

Thanks for the reply - I still know that this issue is also relevant for so many other apple products which don't involve cellular providers.... I think Australians are tired of paying so much more for things than in the US and other countries.  It used to be explained by the poor Australian dollar but that doesnt exactly work when we are over parity with the US dollar and have been for a while now....

  • Issues with less than and grater than condition in prompts in OBIEE 11g,

    Hi all,
i am facing the prombles with less than grater than conditions in OBIEE 11g.
i created two date prompts with presentation variables datefrom and dateto
and i used these prompts in fileters like this using grater than and less than symbol.
    filters are as below:
    lastupdated date is grater than or equal to @{datefrom}{1/1/1950}
    lastupdated date is less than or equal to @{dateto){1/1/1950}
    and created two prompts
    creation datefrom >=
    creation dateto<=
when i passing the dates 05/12/2004 and 05/12/2005 in prompts after clicking the apply button in OBIEE 11g it feches all the records but i need records between these dates. and one more thing is after clicking apply button the two date fields getting the same date..
am i do any thing wrong in the above ???
    please let me know friends..
    waiting for ur replyyyyyy..
    Thanks

    Hi,
Create date prompts with operator as = not >= (or) <= as you need to save that value in presentation variable and you are filtering report using those variable filters.

  • CS 5 OnLocation not any faster with HDV than CS3?

I've been using CS3's OnLocation for dozens on on-site shoots for several years now and regularly sings it praises wherever I travel.  I've used an older 2.1 Ghz single processor Dell laptop, and more recently been using a Quad-core I-5 Toshiba.  My primary camera is a Canon XHA1s; among others, I also use a Sony FX7 and Z5U.
Recently I've been increasingly shooting HDV to tape with a desire to capture same to my laptop using OnLocation with its field monitor.  After initial testing showed ongoing artifacts in my video stream (both recorded and on-screen), I changed to an external SIIG Firewire card which completely resolved those problems for artifact-free footage.
One problem which remained, however, is unacceptable field monitor performance using OnLocation with HDV.  With full frame-rate features enabled, I was getting as much as a 10-second lag time! (yes.. 10 SECONDS).  When I cut back which frames are being displayed (OnLocation settings), the lag goes down somewhere between .5 and 1 second (still pretty bad IMO), and is pretty stuttery.
I was hoping that CS5's OnLocation would be more optimized for HDV and perform better, and installed a friend's version of CS5 OnLocation to test this out.  Sadly, not only did it perform *NO BETTER*, but after some period of capturing (10 minutes one time, an hour another time.. did not seem consistent) the laptop's screen would go blank (not off) and the computer remained unresponsive (required a hard boot).  After this repeated several times, I tried using CS3's OnLocation again, but it too was experiencing the "blank screen then lock the laptop" problem -- although I haven't tested it, I do hope that uninstalling CS5's OnLocation and re-installing CS3's will remove the offending DLL or Codec and avoid future "lock-up" problems.
My question here is -- is the lag and stuttery (like a low frame rate or shutter speed) field monitor the expected behaviors with OnLocation and HDV?  Yeah yeah.. I've read excuses that "HDV requires more processing" but I've captured and previewed full framerate HDV using Sony Vegas's capture while simultaneously capturing a DV stream using the same software, and had no issues at all while experiencing fluid previews.
Any thoughts on what's going on?  If I knew CS5 would fix the problem and/or was more optimized, I'd happily pay for the upgraded Master Collection, but my experience has not proven so well
    Help?!
    :-/ Rob

heres a test. try importing a single 42gb timeline of 1080p into encore cs5, and now do the same thing for cs6. rendering may or may not be faster for menus, but you can get right to work on your project in cs6, while it processes in the background, vs cs5 having to stare at the yellow status bar for 90 minutes (it seemed, lol)

  • Burners that are more "aggressive" reading less than perfect discs

Has anyone had experience with having to duplicate and work with originals provided by clients that are hard for the dvd drives to recognize properly when you try to make copies? I'm talking about non copy protected - industrials provided to me from varied dvd burners "in the field". Mostly different construction related specialty work. These dvd "masters" are created by feeding a camera's output to a consumer dvd/vhs combo recorder. Most of the dvd's I get are fine, but occasionally my drives "choke" on the originals. The discs are clean (no scratches) and the brand of blank does not seem to matter. I have purchased software that is supposed to have superior error correction properties and it doesn't really help.
I'm thinking that folks in this forum might have experience with hardware solutions that might help this situation.
    TIA,
    Pete D

    Pete,
It used to happen more in the past than it does now, but this just happened to me last week. A client broat over a DVD which would not read in all 3 of my Macs no matter what drive I used. It also only played in 2 of my multiple set top players. It eventually played and mounted in my "home" PC of all things. Having a few different brand drives ready to read the discs and a few extra computers around helps.

  • Can you install snow leopard on Intel based mac with less than one GB of ra

As the subject relay I have an Intel mac mini with 750GB of ram? will th einstaller let me install Snow Leopard?

No, the installer will not let you install Snow Leopard on an Intel Mac with less than 1 GB of RAM. Even if it did, performance would be unacceptable & the OS would probably be unstable.
If you want to run Snow Leopard you will need to upgrade to at least 1 GB of installed RAM. If you want it to run efficiently, you should install more. Typically, 2 GB will get you most of the benefits of a larger memory space but if your Mac supports more & you want the best possible performance, install the maximum the Mac can handle.

  • ME2N report displaying more columns in Background than foreground.I want same columns in Background as Foreground

    Hi All,
ME2N report displaying more columns in Background than foreground.I want same columns in Background as Foreground having 10 columns.Already i have created the default variant in foreground when i execute the report in background by proving the same variant it is displaying more columns almost 70 columns.Kindly suggest and guide me how to restrict the report to get same columns in background as in foreground.
Kindly provide is there any OSS Note available.
    Thanks,
    Prashanth Reddy

I do not think it is possible to assign default layout for background job.
System will show you all field for background job for transaction ME2N.
Actually the screen layout is assigned with t-code (ME2N)
When the report is running in foreground, then system will take the screen layout for the t-code.
But when you run the background, then system will run the program directly (does not take the t-code). So the default screen layout will not fetch during running the background job.
For more details have a look into the thread Selecting layout in selection screen

  • I refuse to buy nokia phone with less than 1500 mA...

I realized this after latest addition of E52 with 1500 mAh battery So far, i have purchased about 30 or so Nokia handsets during past 14 years.
The battery Life of E52 is just marvelous. simply amazing. Cant imaging how I survived 14 years exclusively using Nokia phones with less than 1500 mAh battery.
The new touch screen phones like the latest N-800 with HDMI Port has only 1200 mAh battery!!! why not put a 2100 mAh battery on such a beauty? people are going to use the phones more than just making call, this demands more battery power. 1200 mAh battery will last less than a day.... People, expecially myself will be dissapointed in using such a phone with so less battery power.
Granted these days processors are more efficient, but wont it be good if Nokia puts little more juice to their most beautiful touchscreen handsets?
Having less battery power is the main reason i have been holding off my purchase of touch screen phones like N900, and now this N-8.
Please Nokia, please try to put the best in it's class battery for the best in it's class phones.
Even the iPhone 4G has (1200 mAH) less capacity battery than my E52.
My E52 goes on and on for weeks together without charging. On heavy usage it easily lasts for 1 full week!... (never been like this for any of the previous nokia phones...) especially the top of the end models like my old N82
So far, I am very happy with my E52. Wish some thing similar i.e. slim E series comes with touch screen soon.

    Hello kmschmehl-
I cannot truly express how sorry I am to hear about your total experience with the delivery and subsequent return of this fridge.  It certainly sounds as though Best Buy has put you through the ringer and I can absolutely understand your disappointment and anger with us.
While it sounds like some aspects of the purchase and delivery were at least adequate, any opportunity that we had to show you why you should purchase from Best Buy went by the wayside.  However, Best Buy is not in the business to provide merely adequate experiences and I am saddened that this is the best we could summon for your purchase.  We are capable of better than what we showed you.
I’m glad to hear that you have finally been able to get the assistance you needed to get this refund resolved and make you whole again.  In addition, I do hope that you are enjoying the fridge you purchased at Lowe’s.  I certainly wish that it had been a Best Buy fridge in your kitchen instead, but I can understand why you chose to go with another retailer.
It sounds like the store has you in good hands once your card arrives and I believe that the reason they need the physical card is that the credit card company requires it to be physically scanned for returns.  Hopefully you will not run into any further issues with this refund and it’s my hope that sometime in the future, you might grant us another chance at your business.  I will be sending you a Private Message with some additional details as well.  To check your Private Messages, please log into the forum and click on the envelope in the upper right hand corner.
Please let us know if you run into any further concerns.
    Sincerely,
Bill|Senior Social Media Specialist | Best Buy® Corporate
