More Bizarre Capturing Glitches

Hey.
It appears Final Cut decided to throw me a conundrum today to forceable make me do some work as opposed to continuing to overdose on holiday food.
So here it is.
I was, capturing some footage, in my usual fashion, which until now has not been a problem. Camera, check, firewire, check etc etc. Clip and capture settings all unchanged from the last times digitising mania I had. Everything is technically correct, plugged in and ready to go.
I marked an in and an out point of my clip which was 11 minutes long. There was more than ample pre-roll either end, the tape was striped and had no time code breaks. Yet after i had pressed Batch Capture and the tape rewound to the marked in point, it only captured 6 frames of video before stalling, freezing a still image in the capture window.
I checked the viewfinder of my camera and the video is still playing. I wait a few more moments, and now in the capture window the frozen image has changed to further along in the clip plays for 6 frames and freezes again. Repeat cycle for 5 minutes. I hit the Esc key, the camera does not go into pause mode, my desktop mouse is spinning in LSD madness. Eventually, 3 minutes later my Batch Capture message comes up telling me there is an error, but alerts me to the nothing else. In the project browser window there is a new logged clip. I look at it and essentially it has captured 10 different shots from the clip that are 6 frames of moving video long followed by 3 seconds still frame.
So, question is... what up with that?
I have gone through all the settings, preferences, i have changed firewire cable, i have tried another entirely different tape. And i'm about to bang my head on the table.

in addition to which drive, did you update Quicktime or FCP or iTunes since the last time you captured?
If so, a quicktime reinstall may be useful.
1. Run Disk Utilities> REPAIR PERMISSIONS
2. go to /library/receipts and delete anything with quicktime followed by a number (e.g. Quicktime703.pkg)
3. download and reinstall the latest quicktime update.
4. Repair Permissions.

I have had this problem happened too a few clips In my the timeline/Project. When I play the clip I notice that it sounds strange, and not how it is supposed too sound like. Then I See in the Inspector that it looks like this
THEN i Reveal it in finder RELINK it to its Original .. Then go to timeline and find the clip whit the broken audio
Looks still like this
Then i press the on Four Mono and press Reset
Then it changed too this
Then i did press CMD + Z for undo
Then it sounds right and works again
I dont know how this is possible to do any kind of change.
(It did happened after i made the hole Timline/Project Into a "Compund Clip" Too easy to place a broadcast safe on to it.)

Tint bizarre graphics glitch?

everytime i perform a window operation (move, resize, close, etc.) the background area of tint changes to some mashed up part of a windows+ content.

No clue, but if it was me, I'd try commenting out the more advanced nvidia tweaks you have enabled (e.g. DamageEvents, etc.)

Bizarre graphical glitch

I'm currently running the most recent build of Skype for Windows XP.
I have no clue how to explain this, Happens occasionally when I do group audio calls.

Go to Windows Start and in the Run box type dxdiag.exe and press the OK button. This will start the DirectX diagnostics program. Run this diagnostics and save the results to a file. Please, attach this file to your post.

Even more bizarre WDS problems

I am setting up a home WDS network with 3 bases, one AEBSn and two expresses. I have all three in the same room. Last night, they were all working. This morning, Airport Utility cannot find one of the expresses. iStumbler shows all three bases with signals between 50-70%.
So what is the problem here? Is the express faulty? It seems to be broadcasting fine.
Before anyone else suggests it, there are no other wireless networks in range and no sources of wifi interference in the room.
Just to test what would happen, I restarted the working express. Nothing happened and I still have a missing express.
Then I looked at the AEBS. It is reporting that the missing express is a wireless client with a signal of -61, noise of -104 and rate of 1. The signal/noise numbers are close to the other clients, but the other clients all have rates of 54, 54 and 24. One of the clients is the working express, and I guess the other two are my computers.
I restarted the AEBS and the express simultaneously, and that allowed the other express to become available in Airport Utility. Now, all three bases are back up again.
Someone please tell me what is going on here. I can't start to distribute the bases around the house if they won't even work in the same room.

I have been having a similar issue. I have two AEBSn and one express. Every few days one of the clients will disappear and not be found by the airport utiltiy. Like posnera, the missing client shows up aith a rate of 1. I also may or may not get an error message. Often the light is green on bosth the main AEBS and the missing client.
At first I thought it might have been a range issue but it is happening even when they're all in the same room. Restarting the missing client does the trick but I can't figure out why I keep getting a dropout.
It's driving me crazy...

Audio Capture only happens if its more than 5 seconds

Hello,
I'm writing a midlet that does audio capture on the LG CU500 phone. When I capture for 5 seconds or more, audio capture works as intended, however if I only record for under 5 seconds, it doesn't work. There is no timer. Would could be causing the problem?

Here is a snippet of the code that i'm using. When playing back, if I record say 10 seconds, I only hear about 7 seconds of the recording. About 3 seconds are cut off at the end. If I record for say less than 4 seconds, nothing seems to be recorded, nothing plays back.

Bizarre phone fault - can anyone shed more light t...

We have recently moved into a rented house and switched to BT from day one as there was a special offer phone/broadband/TV package. But we have an odd phone fault and wondered if anyone had experienced similar?
We have a main socket which is different from any shown on BT website, with two identical slots each labelled "BT exchange line", each with a sticker with a different number (does not seem to be a phone number): the socket looks a few years old and the stickers have an obsolete customer service phone number on them.
We can plug a phone into one of the slots and it works and we have also now plugged the BT hub into the same slot via a splitter - that also works. The other slot is dead, so we assume it might be two separate phone lines.
But the main socket is in our daughter's bedroom so we need to use the various extensions in the house - we also need to connect our BT hub near the TV.
When we plug a phone into any of the extensions we get a dialling tone and can dial but when we get to the eighth digit (always the eighth) of whatever number we try we get "the number you have dialled has not been recognised".
After going through the BT faults site (no use as our main socket is not shown there and there is no reference to a similar fault with the extensions) we rang BT and got the call centre, which was frankly no help. They did not recognise this fault and seemed to have no technical knowledge at all. I asked to speak to an engineer and was told (I quote) "this facility is not offered" - this is clearly unsatisfactory (in fact, utterly stupid), our previous phone company always had experts on the end of the line if necessary and they twice helped us to sort out problems in a few minutes with no need for call out.
But BT said, very unhelpfully, that the only way they could help would be if, rather than a two minute phone chat, we called out an engineer for which we would be charged £129.99 if the fault turned out to be beyond the master socket. We had no way of knowing whether this was the case in advance (neither could the call centre operative enlighten us), given that the extensions DO seem to be connected to the line (as we have dialling tones), just not working for reasons that may or may not be to do with the main phone line or the way BT has connected our number.
Obviously £129.99 is a ridiculous call out charge for what could be two minutes work. It also seemed suprising that BT could not immediately access a record of what sockets were installed by BT itself in the house and that the call centre seemed never to have encountered before the type of socket we have. And that BT then advised us "to contact a local engineer" - should not BT have local engineers, we live near Reading so hardly the back of beyond?
In fact, even more bizarrely, a BT engineer, local or not, had already visited WITHOUT an appointment a few days previously after we had first contacted BT to say the phones were not working properly and phoned us from outside asking for access to the house....but this was during a period when we had notified BT in three separate ways (phone, text and e-mail) that we would be away.....
All in all we are mystified by the nature of the fault - if anyone on this forum has experienced similar, it would be great to hear about it - and equally so by BT's response to it and by its apparent policy that no-one with any expertise should speak to us about it without a £129.99 charge - hardly the way to welcome and retain new customers in what is now a competitive market! After a forceful complaint it seems that we will now be able to talk to someone other than the call centre....but not clear whether this will be a qualified engineer and getting this far has already taken hours of our time.

Sounds like you have a LJU4.... In the early to late 90's when people got dial up BB a lot of them took a second line, so they could use phone/internet at the same time......
To stop people requiring two overhead cables from the pole and two different NTE's BT created the Drop Wire 10b, a 2 pair aerial cable. Orange/White pair 1 and Green/Black pair 2. They then did the double socket, LJU4 so you wouldn't need 2 separate sockets....
I would imagine the LJU4 would be your *Master Socket* and the others would just be extensions off it.... That's just my opinion though, without actually seeing the wiring setup I couldn't say....
Can you get a pic of the socket and a pic of the wiring behind it?

Bizarre CFIF issue with dynamic form variables? Very strange...

What I'm doing here is fairly basic.I'm running a query with a number of configs in it...and then creating a loop to output them. Ultimately, I only want the configurations that didnt have 0 submitted in the form on the previous page. Each one of the configs in the config query has a dynamic form variable on the previous page with a quantity tied to it. I am trying to eliminate all quantities past that aren't 0 (or not eliminate, just not show)...as you can see from the cfif statement.
Here's where it gets weird. You'll notice I output #form['baseconfig#reviewconfigloader.basemodelID#']#, just for testing, which shows me the quantity as it should. I ran a test and put in a couple of 1s, 0s, 12s, 6s, etc in the form fields on the previous page. If this thing worked, it wouldnt show anything for any of the records with their basemodelID value being submitted as 0. Not the case. It shows all records. What is more hilarious is that it outputs perfectly in my test #form['baseconfig#reviewconfigloader.basemodelID#']#, showing the correct numbers entered in the previous form, the 1s, the 0s, etc, tied to each record. But for whatever reason, the cfif code isn't catching it.
What's even more bizarre...I replaced the cfif ("form.baseconfig#reviewconfigloader.basemodelID#") NEQ 0 with GT 12 (12 was the highest number that I put in the form) and it still showed all records. Then I put it in as LT 12 and it showed nothing. I decided to take it one step further and put it in for GT 1231243242343 (random massive number), which it still showed all of the records. So somehow, my CFIF statement thinks that ("form.baseconfig#reviewconfigloader.basemodelID#") is a incredibly large number, although when I output it in the row below, it is the number it should be.
I'm stumped. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!

Hey Dan...thanks....unfortunately...with the cfif testing, thats kinda what I'm
doing because I dont have an "expected" value. My expected value is anything a user inputs thats greater than zero, hence NEQ 0 and NEQ "". The real problem is taht what I'm outputting works and what the cfif clause is seeing is obviously very different.
As far as your comment about looping out the variables and then setting a query equal to the value in a cfquery, remember...these are form objects and therefore nothing can be tied back to the database. The result from the code is establishing a form variable (example.... form.basemodel1 (if 1 was the basemodelID from the database query) so it can capture whatever data the user has passed from the previous page in a text input. So that input could have been 23, it could have been 1053.
So really the only way to do it is create a query and loop out the variables.... and attach them to form objects (basemodel1, basemodel2, basemodel3 etc where the 1,2 and 3 are the unique ID's for those models in the database), and then look for where those form objects may have been filled in in the previous page by stating IF this form object not equal to 0 or "", output the data.
Does that make sense? Thanks for the help guys I'm completely stumped by this. I've done this a million times with CFIF and I'm really struggling with why this isnt working....

ScreenUpdating=False fails to prevent screen updating, and causes bizarre behaviour

I have recently installed Office 2013 (MSO Standard 2013) on my (Win 7 Professional) computer. During a brief transitional period, Office 2003 will remain on my computer.
I had been looking forward to running the many Excel VBA applications on Excel 2013, but am not only disappointed, but alarmed. We are significantly dependent on over 50 business applications running in Excel VBA (many of which are complex,
and many of which I have developed), but we now find that seemingly one difference alone (though we may yet discover more) is rendering many of them virtually unusable. That difference is the behaviour of the Application.ScreenUpdating method.
In Excel 2003, the ScreenUpdating method behaved intuitively, predictably and reliably. It basically does what it says - all screen updating, except for the status bar, is frozen. To allow users to peek at any updates, one would simply
set ScreenUpdating=True and at the appropriate point freeze updating with ScreenUpdating=False. Now, in Excel 2013, we are instead finding behaviour which has to be described as bizarre, counterintuitive and destructive. Essentially, what is happening
is that whenever another worksheet is activated, ScreenUpdating=False does not prevent screen updating - and for good measure, there are a number of other unpleasant side-effects. I have spent many long hours searching through hundreds of forum posts
and testing workarounds - all without success. I have seen many posts complaining about ScreenUpdating in Excel 2013, but not a single implementable solution. Yes, I've seen the advice about replacing Select or Activate methods with objects, but
this workaround would not only be extremely costly and impractical in our case (it would require reworking tens of thousands of lines of code and would probably take many person months of unjustifiable work), it almost certainly wouldn't work. (You'll
have to take my word on that.) And all because ScreenUpdating=False doesn't really prevent screen updating any more! I cannot accept that ScreenUpdating is working properly in Excel 2013, nor that its functionality is in any way acceptable.
The problems are best illustrated with a simple example. I created this example to verify that the flickering was unrelated to the complexity of the business applications I referred to above. In this example, there is a "master"
workbook named "ScreenUpdatingTest.xls". This contains a single button on its only worksheet, and this button executes macro "TestScreenUpdating". This macro turns screen updating off, then sequentially opens workbook AAA.xls,
workbook BBB.xls and workbook CCC.xls with a 3 second interval between each workbook being opened. After 3 more seconds, it activates workbook ScreenUpdatingTest.xls and then turns screen updating on. Along the way, it reports these actions in
the status bar. One would expect that this would result in AAA, BBB and CCC being opened in the background, with the user seeing no changes on the screen apart from the status bar and the workbooks appearing in the task bar. This is precisely what
happens in Excel 2003.
By contrast, Excel 2013 seems to do absolutely nothing for about 12 seconds (even the task bar and the status bar remains unchanged), then, AAA, BBB and CCC can be seen to open (in maximized windows) in rapid succession. The only message I see in the
status bar is the last one, "Switched back to ScreenUpdatingTest.xls." Even more bizarrely, that there is a call to Msgbox "Hi" just before the Application.ScreenUpdating=True at the end of the subroutine - and this should be unrelated
to which workbook the focus end up with, right? Wrong! If Msgbox "Hi" is commented out, the focus ends up with CCC.xls - in other words, Workbooks(ThisWorkbook.Name).Activate seems to be ignored. But if Msgbox "Hi" is
uncommented, the focus ends up with ScreenUpdatingTest.xls! This is crazy, isn't it?

Surely it is reasonable to expect that such functionality should remain consistent from one version to the next! Our applications in Excel 2003 had a professional, elegant user interface, and they behaved predictably, intuitively and robustly.
With Excel 2013, this is utterly trashed, with flickering, unpredictable behaviour (who knows what will get the focus?) and inefficiency (things are so much slower when the screen updates). With Office 2003 going out of support, vast numbers of people
in my company will be moving to Excel 2013 as Excel 2003 is decommissioned. I imagine the same will be happening in many other companies. We now find ourselves on the cusp of being dealt us a devastating blow due to ONE DYSFUNCTIONAL METHOD, and
we are desperate for a solution. A solution would either have to restore the former Excel 2003 functionality of ScreenUpdating, or it would have to introduce a new method which really does turn screen updating on or off without exception.
Please, HELP!

I don't think the Single Document Interface is contributing to the problem. Since installing Office 2013, Excel 2003 has also inherited a Single Document Interface - yet while it behaves like a charm, Excel 2013 behaves ineptly.
Whatever the reasons for the problem, the fact is that this functionality is now broken - one might even say catastrophically broken - and some sort of resolution is essential. It would be madness to allow something like this to have such a severe
impact on business operations.
My call for help is still out there, as loud as ever! BTW, I can send my example files, zipped, to anyone who might like to look at them.

How can I create a PNG or JPG screen capture or screenshot of the entire length of a long email message?

Hi all,
I need to create screenshots of emails, but I need to image the entire length of those emails. Can I using Mail or any other email application? Here is what I have tried so far ...
I can only do a screen capture of the portion of the email that shows up on my 27" Mac. I can reduce the size of the emails somewhat, but usually not enough to capture their entire length.
I tried going through Gmail using Firefox + Awesome Screenshots plugin, but couldn't get Gmail to open entire page so as to capture it. Normally I view this Gmail account using Apple Mail.
"Printing" to a PDF is not an acceptable solution for my needs, because that changes the native formatting to fit the print / pdf format. I need to show the exact email layout as thought it were an actual email.
Any ideas? Thaks for your help.

Installed ScreenGrab add-on to Firefox and, sorry, it still only captures the window to the extent that it is open, and there is no way that I know to open an email window in Gmail so as to show the netire lengthof a long email message.
So, ScreenGrab helped me get more screen capture of an email, but still not yet the entire email. I used Save>Complete Page/Frame, but still no more than what is visible.
I'll keep looking. And thanks for your suggestion Sabatica.

Do I have to have a capture card to use FCP?

I'm considering laying out the dough to upgrade from FCE to FCP but I noticed that the apple site says I have to have a "support 3rd partycapture card". I'll admit I'm green on what that means.
I currently import all my video media directly from my sony z1u via firewire.
Does the firewire import negate the capture card requirement?
If not, can someone recommend the necessary capture card for a Mac Pro 2.66?

No, you'll be fine with just standard FireWire, capturing HDV (of DV if your downconvert in the camera) from your Z1U.
If you were to use any other (more expensive) capture card, to maybe capture uncompressed HD from the component outputs of your Z1, the image quality won't be any better, as the image is compressed to HDV to be recorded on tape.

How does one import Capture One 7.0 Pro files into Lightroom 5.3?

I'm trying to import CR2 files from Capture One Pro 7.0 into Lightroom 5.3. I've done this before but this time around LR5 is not seeing the files yet I know they're there.

Ok, I poorly communicated. I realize that the CR2 files came from my Canon camera. I made an assumption that the issue had something to do with the files being in a Capture One folder. It didn't make sense to me why I could view the files in a finder window. I had too many images in subfolders to drag and drop or move them. They were organized in Capture One subfolders from the shoot.
I also realize that the files are no more in Capture One then they are in LR.
Right after I posted this I decided to quit LR and restart my computer.
Issue resolved.
No idea what the issue was but it's moot.

Render glitch in AE (and FCP7)

Every so often I will get glitched frames in AE, and also in FCP7 . The glitch happens when a clip is rendered. Most often, a diagonal line appears in a frame. Sometimes there are other issues, such as artifacting. The glitches never appear for more than one frame, and it is rare or more than one glitch in a single clip. The way we have been fixing the problem is to cut the clip around the glitch and re-render the affected area.
We haven't been able to pinpoint the cause. It doesn't have to do with a certain filter being used. We primarily use BCC, FxFactory, and CoreMelt plugins, and haven't seen any correlation between any one filter being used and glitches appearing. We tried the usual fixes, and just recently reformatted the computer and reinstalled from scratch. It seemed to work better for a couple weeks, but the glitch came back.
Here are two examples. I used an artist sketch filter on the video. The first glitch is a diagonal line, the second is distortion of the video/filter. The clean frame came between the two glitches.

What codec are you using? What version of AE. I'm not having any issues with any of the ProRez formats CS6 and OSX 10.7 0r 10.8

so what are your clip settings (select a clip in the timeline and hit command-9)? Frame rate, pixel dimensions, pixel aspect ratio and codec (or compressor) and field dominance are what we need to know. And what are your sequence settings (in fcp) or compositon settings in AE?
I'd think of 3 obvious things that might be responsible; a non fcp friendly codec like h264, mismatched frame rates and mismatched field dominance.

Is there a way to change the capture setting so I can get more than only 6 mins.

I have a G4 933Mhz Running Panther 10.3.9 Running FCE Ver 2.0.3 Until a recent software update I was able to capture run and edit.
Now I am not able to capture video longer than 5 min The Capture screen freezes the Source tape continues to play I have to hit esc then it takes 5 min for the wait wheel to clear. It then flags me about dropped frames.
I upgraded to Quicktime 7.4.1pro I am still having the same issues.
Now here is the good part If I have to upgrade as you say!
I Then need to upgrade my OS At a $100 + Then Upgrade FCE again Here is the best part I have to Upgrade Processor to be able to run all this!
"Limit Capture Now to" is set to 90 minutes,
I have 3 internal hardrives that I have been using for a while I dont believe the HD format is the issue.
I am using Canon GL2 Firewire to back of MAC
any other suggestions.
