More information density on external monitor

Hi all
I have a Macbook Air (2ghz i7 - 8GB Ram - 4000 1024 graphics) mid 2012.
I'm after a 27 inch external monitor - but I don't want larger content, I want MORE content. I need more actual information density so I can have several panes open and visible at the same time.
I've seen some 1080p screens, and some 1440 screens, and even 4k screens are coming down in price now - just need to know if my Air will drive them, and if what I want is achievable. Do I need to look for the monitor to have certain ports other than HDMI?
I have a 24" Samsung external now (syncMaster S24B300), and my desk is quite shallow so I sit about 24 inches from the external monitor (would be nice to have it wall mountable. I don't game, and I don't need it for video etc - it's all just information. I'd have a Tweetbot window, a reminders window, a evernote window, and a chrome window.
Any advice would be welcome.

I can't decide wether this is such a noob question that it doesn't deserve a response, or if it's actually a difficult question - or if (after 61 views and no responses) people just can't bothered?
If it's the first one - just tell me, I'm happy to look foolish if I can learn something.

  • Overlay information on External monitor?

    Hi all,
    I would LOVE to be able to overlay editing information on the external monitor.
    In particular, I wish I could overlay audio levels on the external monitor.
    Does anyone know if it is possible to turn on overlays on an external monitor?
    i can't find any information on it one way or the other.

    sorry mabou
    live overlays on the output is not a feature of FCP
    Anybody have a plugin that will allow the timecode overlay to display while the vid is playing in the canvas?
    Thanks,

  • Latest kernel messes up external monitor resolution

    Since the upgrade to 3.5.3 my VGA monitor is only detected as 1024x768, not as 1440x900 which it actually is and previously it was always detected correctly.
    Forcing that mode with xrandr --newmode etc. does work, but it is annoying to do this after every reboot/restart of X...
    I'd gladly help and give more information about my Philips monitor if someone tells me which command to use..

    I too am having the same problem. I am, at the moment, running the stock kernel provided by Arch (which correctly displays my monitor's resolution)
    When I issue:
    sudo pacman -Qi linux
    I double-check that my current kernel version is:
    Name : linux
    Version : 3.4.5-1
    But the other day I used the Arch Build System to compile a custom kernel with the '3.5.3-linux-ck' patched kernel and some stripped down options (I don't need all the laptop modules). Apart from those changes, everything else in my .config file matches with my functioning kernel (checked using 'meld'). But once the graphical login starts up, I am left with an incorrect screen resolution  of 1024x768 and no way to change it.
    Recompiling it without the patches yields the same problem.

    It's possible the upgrade did not update everything properly as it looks like a dll mismatch or a missing file. I'd open a support ticket with MS and have a support engineer look at the upgrade logs. What version of SCOM did you upgrade from?

  • HT5019 MacPro laptop display and 2 external monitors (three displays). Can I have more than one application displayed at a time?

    I would like to have my MacPro laptop display and 2 external monitors (three displays). Question, how can I have more than one application displayed at a time? IE: I would like email on one monitor, Finder on my laptop, and iTunes on the other. Possible?
    With extended desktop, it appears that I can only have one application presenting at a time. Sort of defeats the purpose of having multiple displays.
    I am using the HDMI and the mini HDMI connectors.

  • [SOLVED] Openbox - setting different dpi on external monitor

    [SOLVED SUMMARY]
    After the suggestion from Max, I've got two instances of openbox running on the different screens.
    the xorg.conf I used for this is below.
    then I used the following addition to ~/.xinitrc to start two instances and set the dpi of the laptop screen:
    DISPLAY=:0.1
    exec openbox &
    DISPLAY=:0.0
    exec xrandr --output eDP1 --dpi 192 &
    exec openbox-session
    [/SOLVED SUMMARY]
    [ORIGINAL POST BELOW]
    Hello,
    I want to be able to set a different dpi for my laptop screen  (macbook pro retina 13 inch late 2013  11,1   integrated graphics (not nvidia))
    and my external monitor, as the laptop screen has a pixel density more than double that of the external monitor
    if I start openbox using:
    startx
    then text on the laptop is too small,  but everything on the monitor is ok. Conversely if I start openbox with
    startx -- -dpi 144
    then for the most part, things scale up nicely on the laptop, but everything on the monitor is too big.
    So what I have tried to do is set the the dpi with xrandr:
    xrandr --output eDP1 --auto --dpi 144 --output HDMI2 --auto --rotate right --dpi 96 --right-of eDP1
    xrandr outputs a configuration that looks ok, but the display doesn't change:
    Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 3760 x 1920, maximum 32767 x 32767
    eDP1 connected 2560x1600+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 286mm x 179mm

    There seem to be a thousand ways to set up multiple screens, so it would be great to hear from anyone who has any suggestions about the best ways for me to approach this,
    should I  set up seperate monitors in Xorg.conf,
    or even seperate X DISPLAYs and launch multiple instances of openbox?
    thanks
    Mathew
    [EDIT]
    on re-examining, while the dimensions listed by xrandr seem about right, the xrandr command isn't changing them, they seem to be  defaults

  • How to blank laptop screen when using external monitor/

    Hi there
    I need some help with figuring out how to configure my xorg.conf for my Arch Linux 64 bit installation on a HP Pavilion dv 5000 laptop so that I can automatically blank my laptop screen when using an external monitor.  I have Arch Linux installed along with Ubuntu Feisty.  In Ubuntu my external monitor (Viewsonic 1912WB) was not detected at the time of installation but with the native 1280X800 resolution that is good for the laptop takes effect for the external monitor automatically when the external monitor is plugged in.  The laptop monitor goes blank when the external monitor is plugged in.
    In my Arch Linux installation I have not been able to configure a dual head configuration using the ATI Radeon drivers (fglrx).  I have the native 1280X800 resolution set up for the laptop monitor and this resolution takes effect for the external monitor also.  However the laptop monitor also continues to function when the external monitor is plugged in.  I would like to blank the laptop monitor when using the external monitor.
    I am attaching my Arch Linux xorg.conf and the Ubuntu xorg.conf below.  Thanks for anyone who can help, I am having a lot of difficulty in figuring out how to set up xorg.conf among all the things that I have had to learn so far in Linux and I am a relative newcomer to the whole thing. I have tried to compare the two xorg.conf files and edit my Arch xorg.conf in accordance with the Ubuntu one but it did not work and I keep getting errors!
    I am using XFCE as my Desktop environment.

    Xrandr 1.2 provides means for this. But today the only supported configuration is xorg-server-1.3 + xf86-video-intel-2.0. So for Radeon you'll have to wait for drivers that support Randr 1.2.
    On my laptop (Thinkpad x60s) that would be:
    xrandr --output VGA --auto
    xrandr --output LVDS --off

  • External monitor shifted to the right

    i just got an external monitor (acer v223W) which support max resolution of 1680x1050. but when i try and use xrandr like:
    xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1440x900 --output VGA1 --mode 1680x1050 --right-of LVDS1
    what i see is shifted by about 100px or so to the left. so on my right had side i have a black bar and when i move a window from my external monitor to my laptop i can tell that the window disappears for a bit before staring to show up on my laptop. before i had a different monitor with max resolution of 1600x900 and xrandr worked great.
    here is the info that i gathered:
    - my laptop is (almost) up to date on all software
    - it has two video cards: intel (which is the one i use) and nvidea (i disabled it in bios).
    - i have intel video drivers installed:
    : pacman -Qs intel
    local/intel-dri 7.10.2-2
    Mesa DRI drivers for Intel
    local/xf86-video-intel 2.15.0-1 (xorg-drivers xorg)
    X.org Intel i810/i830/i915/945G/G965+ video drivers
    - here is what xrandr says

    here is what scrot gave me: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/292474/arch/output.jpg
    but what i see is more like: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/292474/arch/output_view.jpg
    @ewaller
    interface is VGA. i have tried changing the H. Position on the monitor to "slide it back" but even when it's completely at 100% on one side i gain back half of the black area. i don't know what else i can change on the monitor that would help me out.

  • I downloaded the new osx mavericks system, and it would not recognize my external monitor.  I have a macbook pro.

    Any ideas on how to get my new osx mavericks that i just downloaded to recognize my external monitor?

    Hello maggiefromloudon,
    Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    For more information on this, take a look at:

  • Dual monitor (w/laptop): external monitor is blank.

    Hi! just installed arch for the first time a day ago. Right now what I'm working on is on getting my second monitor running (mostly for development purposes... and movies ^__^).
    I'm using Arch64 with the open ATI driver and KDE. Whenever I connect the external monitor, the monitor seems to detect a connection occurred (the "check video cable" message disappears when I connect it and comes back when I disconnect it), and so does KDE. When I open my display settings, it tells me a new monitor was connected and asks me if I want to configure it.
    Then I choose to configure and use the two monitors giving the following screens (right now I'm at college testing with monitors in there, thus the low resolution, but behavior seems to be exactly the same):
    (EDIT: resized. In case of wishing to read full images, just take the "resized/" out of the URI)
    However pretty the full screenshot looks like (... I just mean that even if it looks like the second monitor is working), the monitor remains blank.
    Using arandr (xrandr's gui), it is exactly the same result. I might be doing something wrong (almost certainly I am ) (EDIT: decided it was a good idea to show what I did with xrandr).
    In /home/<myuser>/.xinitrc my file looks like this:
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1440x900 --pos 1600x0 --rotate normal --output LVDS --mode 1600x900 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --output HDMI-0 --off
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    exec ck-launch-session startkde
    # exec gnome-session
    # exec startkde
    # exec startxfce4
    # ...or the Window Manager of your choice
    The laptop's model is Toshiba Satellite L775d. I'm not sure what other information should be required in this situation, but I will be loving to give anything that isn't compromising
    Thank you!
    (PS: so far Arch has treated me nicely let's see for how long)

    I wondered the same. I initially only used KDE for it (that's how it worked in other distros, but I'm guessing Fedora and Kubuntu have way more stuff on top). I moved to xrandr later after searching for options and I did select "Ignore" when KDE asked me to configure and just went ahead with xrandr. The same still happens.
    Thanks, I hope I gave the right information.
    EDIT: Adding some extra information. I tried rebooting with the CRT cable connected. When the kernel initiated its loading, the messages only appeared on the external monitor. It was afterwards (it was pretty quick, but I will assume it was when radeon's modeset hit) that the external monitor went blank again and, in that situation, the laptop's monitor went blank (so none of the two monitors worked... and I was so hopeful!)

  • Mac Book Pro (Mid 2010) is no longer recognized the external monitor since Lion update.

    Mac Book Pro (Mid 2010) is no longer recognized the external monitor sinceLion update. On Mac OSX 10.6, I had no problems.
    Mac screen is just blue, as if he switches. But then there is no further signal.
    What can I do?

    Bump- I have the same issue.  Screen slowly dims for no observable reason until I rearrange to point it more directly at light source.  Odd thing is that the light in the room does not change.  So scren will be fine for hours while I am working and at some point just slowly dim until I rearrange.  Any information helpful.

  • External Monitor refresh rate conflict

    I've got the PB 12" and for a longtime have been using a 17" Soyo monitor with the computer closed and Bluetooth devices. It's a great setup. Now one time disconnected it to take the powerbook, and now I can't run it with just the 17" monitor. I don't want two screens, and I don't want a 12" screen. However, every time I now try to close and wake up the computer, it says the there is a problem with the resolution and the refresh rate, it says it's "Out of Range". Now I figure it's because the computer is trying to send signals to my external monitor just like it was my Powerbook, but my screen can't show them because it has different specs than the powerbook monitor. Please help, if you need more information, please ask.

    you have a CRT projector? If it is a 16:9 projector it doesn't really matter if the refresh rate is at 75 or 85 hz.
    I know the x200 can do at least 75 hz at 720p, not sure if it can do any higher.

  • External monitor not detected on Thinkpad W530 intel-virtual-output

    I'm having problems with connecting my ThinkPad W530 to external monitors since a few months. I'm using NVIDIA Optimus and bumblebee/optirun since the VGA and Mini DisplayPort connectors are only wired to the NVIDIA card om this laptop. For a long time I have executed:
    $ optirun true
    $ intel-virtual-output
    Then I have started the Screens GUI tool in Gnome to setup the placement of the external screen but now the external screen is not present in the GUI tool and xrandr gives me:
    Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 32767 x 32767
    LVDS1 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x 193mm
    1920x1080 60.00*+ 50.00
    1400x1050 59.98
    1280x1024 60.02
    1280x960 60.00
    1024x768 60.00
    800x600 60.32 56.25
    640x480 59.94
    VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
    VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
    If I select "Discrete mode" and select startup screen as VGA in the BIOS the BIOS and the Grub screens shows on the external monitor but the screen locks on the screen that shows that the system is booting with the linux-ck kernel. This has never worked for me in Arch Linux so that is no surprise. In Ubuntu everything everything worked fine the last time I tried.
    How can I debug this? Why is the external screen not detected any more?

    Thanks, I am not sure exactly how to read the logs but I cannot find anything that is obviously wrong
    Below is my log with an external screen connected via Mini DisplayPort and after running:
    $ optirun true
    $ intel-virtual-output
    a few times, no more logs seem to be added when I connect/disconnect the monitor or when I run the above two commands more times.

  • T500 XP 32 - 2 external monitors - one in VGA-out & one in DisplayPort ? (1920x1080 & 1280x1024)

    I searched and found some information... but the information wasn't specifically clear, so better to find out for sure, and help archive some clear information for the community...
    I'm looking at attaching 2 external LCD monitors to my T500 (2082-3HU).  OS is XP 32bit.
    One will be a 19" 1280x1024,    and the other will be a 27" 1920x1080.
    Plan is to connect 1 to the VGA-out and 1 to the DisplayPort.
    First.. will this work?
    Second.. which is better to attach to which port?  (and why?
    and
    Third.. what are the maximum resolutions that the VGA and DIsplayport ports can provide?   Does it matter if it's VGA or DVI?
    I was going to get a USB to video adapter for $50+, and then remembered the DisplayPort!    If it will work, it's a great way to save some money, get much better video res. and speed, and keep a USB port free.

    Here are two posts I found ... (they appeared out of no-where)
    you can connect two external WUXGA (1920x1200) monitors to the T500 using both the VGA and displayport connectors.   no other hardware is needed besides the display cables.
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/Can-I-connect-Dual-External-screens-to-T500...
    I connected 2 external monitors (1 thru Displayport , 1 thru VGA port ), and it works fine, its very easy to configure it using Lenovo Presentation utility.
    But now I have the view only on those 2 external monitors (notebook display is off)
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T500-with-2-more-displays-thru-Displayport-...
    and for any more monitors, a USB-VGA, or USB-DVI adapter can be used...  from lenovo, or EVGA or any other good type.
