Mount a windows share

Hi everybody...I have a simple question...how can I mount a windows
partition on a sparc solaris system?
are there any program like smbmount on linux?would be better if could be free...thanks a lot..David

as far as I know, the (simple) answer is: no.
Linux kernel supports a file system called smbfs, which is required to mount windows shares.
There is no smbfs under Solaris, so smbmount isn't available.

  • Slow Folder View When Mounting to Windows Share

I'm an intern at an educational institute and we have a graphics lab that has access to a large windows share. They use the share for storing large picture files primarily. Only individuals in certain classes have access to the drive and each student has their individual folder. Graphics shares this share with cad students so the share is called CADShare
On a windows machine when the student connects the only folder that is seen is their own which is folder name = 'firstname.lastname'
On a mac it seems to load every students folder within the share (around 400 students maybe?) and then pull every folder that it populated until the only one seen is the one you have permissions to. It will behave slightly different depending on the folder view.
If the folder is being viewed in list or detail view it will populate/unpopulate instantly and will cause the machine to 'hang' while it's doing this. But if the folder is in folder view it will only populate the full amount of folders. If you click on a folder that is supposed to be hidden it will then unpopulate that folder.
This is becoming an issue for students trying to save and access files in Adobe cs2 but it seems to be more of a problem with the finder than it is with Adobe.
Is there a way to change view settings to be more friendly to windows shares for it not to lag this much when viewing or has anyone seen anything like this?
Any thoughts or solutions would be helpful :]

We've tried something similar to that, they actually connect using afp rather than smb?
    But we've tried connecting:
    afp://server/CADShare/firstname.lastname/
    and
    afp://server/CADShare/firstname.lastname/
It seems to connect to their share directly but it still mounts CADShare so when students browse for files through an application, for example the graphics students are using the "place" command, they experience that lag because of the volume of folders.
It seems like it might just be something our network guy should handle by either making each students folder an individual share or nesting the folders by class or instructor.
Thanks so far though, any other ideas?

  • Desktop Icon for mounted Samba/Windows share

    Hi All,
I have recently moved over to Leopard and have found somthing to be missing that was enabled by default (it seems) in Tiger.
If I mount a Samba/Windows share, there is no icon automatically placed on the desktop (as with USB drives etc) but there was in Tiger. I basically used these icons to know when finishing up for work at the end of the day if there were still any shares mounted before putting my machine to sleep so I would remember to unmount them. Now I don't have the visual cue, so I often get home and Finder locks up a bit and eventually tells me that the shares have been disconnected.
Is there any way to turn this feature back on?

Wow. I feel so stupid. I'm pretty sure I even looked in there and somehow missed it. I think I was looking for something similar to the check box list there is for the sidebar in the Finder preferences.
    Thanks for that.

  • How do I mount a Windows share on 10.5.3 server so everybody can use it?

I was successful in mounting a share and, I hope, giving it 777 directory permission and 666 file permission. However, nobody else can even see it! I used:
    mkdir /share
    mount_smbf //logname:password@windowsserver/share /share
This worked for me. I can see it and access it from a shell window. However, I want everybody else to be able to get to it.
I have the apple set up so it can be accessed from the windows machine but I keep coming up empty trying to go the other way.

I have the exact same problem dude - Sharename\Sub Folder\Sub Folder - therein lies problem. I can see the folder contents, if I logon to server as one of the users I can see them but if I connect via smb as the same user I cannot see them......

  • Issues mounting a windows share

Our printshop has a FTP directory set up on one of the office's Windows servers. We've shared it so we can mount it on our Mac desktops in the prepress department.
After setting up sharing, I tested it from my Mac, going under the Go menu in the Finder and selecting Connect to Server... This brings up a dialog to enter a user name and password. I did so and the share mounted with no problem. Then I went to mount it on another machine but rather than get the user name/password entry dialog, it got an error message that the user name/password were incorrect.
I had two more machines to test this on. On one of them the user name/password dialog came up and I was able to mount the share, but on the last Mac I got the same error message as I did on the second one--it never gave me an opportunity to enter a user name and password.
Then this morning I tested again on one of the machines that wouldn't mount it yesterday and it opened up the user name/password dialog as it should.
Does anyone have any idea what's up with this?
These are all MDD G4s running 10.4.11.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi,
Sorry I do not have enough knowledge about Linux commands. I searched for the error and some people mentioned to use absolute path in command line. It is recommended to post the question to a Linux forum for further information.

  • Mount windows share in linux

How can i mount a windows share in read-write mode from my linux system
I am able to mount in readonly mode as below even though i mentioned rw in that.
    mount -t cifs -o username=administrator,password=adminpass,rw,0,0 //192.168.1.1/RHEL5 /mnt/win
This post is related to Re: backup strategy

I managed to make it work.
I did entry as below in /etc/fstab
    //192.168.1.1/RHEL5 /mnt/win cifs credentials=/etc/
    smbcred 0 0
    run
    mount -a
/etc/smbcred file contains username and password
now it is mounted as read write mode.

  • Samba mounting windows share

Hi, I'm trying to mount a windows share but all I can do after mounting is seeing the folders and files on the share. I can not read any file, I get "permission denied". On windows everything should be set to allow for the files to be read (if my brother didn't forget, overlooked anything). I even disabled the windows firewall.
The windows 2000 computer can access the arch linux samba shares without a problem.
I'm running arch current up to date.
Here's how I mount, as root:
    mount -t smbfs -o username=gast,password=gast //192.168.0.132/Muziek /mnt/LW/Muziek/
(gets mounted succesfully, but I can't read the files)
    Here's my /etc/samba/smb.conf:
    #Global Parameters
    [global]
    workgroup = THUIS
    netbios name = gel
    passdb backend = smbpasswd
    force create mode = 0770
    force directory mode = 0770
    wins support = yes
    case sensitive = no
    encrypt passwords = yes
    security = share
    server string = Linux
    [share]
    path = /mnt/hda1
    public = yes
    only guest = yes
    writable = no
    printable = no
    create mask = 777
Can anyone help me out? I've been trying to get it working for at least a few hours :s.

You are right. I did not need the dir_mode and file_mode, and I did have full control enable, but no dice.
However it seems there is a folder aliasing feature, that was introduced in windows vista (though I don't recall the windows name for the feature and I am running win7), I believe to be the problem. For example, if I share and mount  C:\Users I have access to C:\Users\myuser and can create folders and documents there. However the predefined folders Music, Documents, Pictures I have no write permission inside of.
Next if I share and mount C:\Users\myuser I have the same result for those folders however now I can see additional folders  one is 'My Documents' in this folder I have write access and changes are mapped back to the Documents Folder. Additionally there are now showing in the Documents folder, I had no write access to, additional folders which also weren't showing before 'My Music', 'My Pictures', and 'My Videos' in which I now have write access and they map back as well.
When I connected to the shares from an XP machine I could simply access the original folders.

  • [Solved] Mounting Windows Share

Well what a 2nd post this is!
I've just spent forever trying not to have to post for help but its time i do.
I'm trying to mount a windows share on bootup in autostart.sh so that mpd doesn't die via not being able to find the tunes.
It seams you HAVE to be root to do this. Yes sudo will work but you don't get a password prompt.
I've only found one useful thread from google but these solutions don't seam to work for me http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=272495
    [dan@z0r ~]$ mount /mnt/shares/tank_d
mount: only root can mount //10.1.1.69/d$ on /mnt/shares/tank_d

Don't try and mount it at GUI start, mount it with all the other drives when your system starts. Put it in your /etc/fstab file so that it mounts at system boot - no password required.
Something similar to below. See the fstab link for exact details:
    /dev/xxxx /mnt/shares/tank_d ntfs auto,user,rw 0 0
    Bob

  • Expdp fails with error ORA-39006: internal error writing on a windows share

    Hi!
I need to get the following configuration working:
Linux Server (CentOS 5 32 bits) with Oracle 11.2.0.1.0
    Windows Server 2003 SP2 32 bits.
On the windows server I have created a user called oracle, who is member of oinstall and dba groups. (On Linux username, and group membership is the same).
After that, I share a directory on D:\data_pump (I gave the full control of directory to oracle user). I mount the windows share on my linux as follows:
    mount -t cifs //winserver/data_pump /u04/oradata/data_pump -o user=oracle,password="pass",uid=oracle,gid=oinstall
As the linux oracle user I'm capable of create and edit files, but:
I connect to my database, create the directory called DATA_PUMP pointing to my cifs mount point, and, after that, I issue the following expdp sentence:
    expdp system DIRECTORY=DATA_PUMP DUMPFILE=test4.dmp LOGFILE=test4.log FULL=yes
And I get the following error:
    ORA-39006: internal error
Looking at expdp log I found the following information:
ORA-39097: Data Pump job encountered unexpected error -31643
ORA-39065: unexpected master process exception in FILE
ORA-31643: unable to close dump file "/u04/oradata/data_pump/gaston4.dmp"

  • Proper way to mount a fat32 share

I've seen so many different ways to mount my windows share in fstab with various (to no) options - users, async, dev, etc.
    Problem:
My Documents, My Pictures, and all those other My directories will have the root write permission flag stripped in linux when I boot back and forth.  As best I can tell, any of those window directories which have a unique picture icon embedded in them will change that root level write flag.  If in XP, I keep those directories with a normal folder icon, the w flag will be persistent between boots.
Anyone else have this problem?  If not, all I want to do is r/w and have normal user mount the fat32 share.  Can somebody help me with the fstab entry?

    Thanks, lucke.  Works great.
I'm still having problems with mounting options I think, or Windows XP in general.  Here's the icon/permission dilemna:
    skoal@morpheus:///mnt/windows/My Documents $ ls -ald My\ *
    dr-xr-xr-x 7 root users 16384 2007-09-02 15:12 My Backups
    dr-xr-xr-x 9 root users 16384 2007-09-02 15:20 My Downloads
    drwxrwxr-x 3 root users 16384 2007-05-17 06:18 My Games
    dr-xr-xr-x 6 root users 16384 2007-09-02 15:15 My Music
    dr-xr-xr-x 5 root users 16384 2007-09-02 15:15 My Pictures
    dr-xr-xr-x 2 root users 16384 2007-09-02 15:09 My Received Files
    drwxrwxr-x 6 root users 16384 2007-07-15 16:50 My Videos
    skoal@morpheus:///mnt/windows/My Documents $ touch hello
touch: cannot touch `hello': Permission denied
    skoal@morpheus:///mnt/windows/My Documents $ cd My\ Pictures/
    skoal@morpheus:///mnt/windows/My Documents/My Pictures $ touch hello
touch: cannot touch `hello': Permission denied
    1. Strangely enough, as root I can r/w to even directories marked with w- on them, like My Downloads for example.
    2. However, as skoal, I cannot.
    3. When I change permissions on w- flagged paths to w+, chmod 775 My\ Downloads, it will work for skoal (in that folder).
    4. But from 3, when I go back to XP, the system icons for those My folders marked with w+ will have a missing icon now.  And I have to rerun "rundll32 mydocs.dll,PerlUserInit" to get them back.
    Any ideas?

  • New files and folders on a Linux client mounting a Windows 2012 Server for NFS share do not inherit Owner and Group when SetGID bit set

    Problem statement
When I mount a Windows NFS service file share using UUUA and set the Owner and Group, and set the SetGID bit on the parent folder in a hierarchy. New Files and folders inside and underneath the parent folder do not inherit the Owner and Group permissions
    of the parent.
I am given to understand from this Microsoft KnowledgeBase article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951716/en-gb) the problem is due to the Windows implmentation of NFS Services not supporting the Solaris SystemV or BSD grpid "Semantics"
However the article says the same functionality can acheived by using ACE Inheritance in conjunction with changing the Registry setting for "KeepInheritance" to enable Inheritance propagation of the Permissions by the Windows NFS Services.
    1. The Precise location of the "KeepInheritance" DWORD key appears to have "moved" in  Windows Server 2012 from a Services path to a Software path, is this documented somewhere? And after enabling it, (or creating it in the previous
location) the feature seems non-functional. Is there a method to file a Bug with Microsoft for this Feature?
    2. All of the references on demonstrating how to set an ACE to achieve the same result "currently" either lead to broken links on Microsoft technical websites, or are not explicit they are vague or circumreferential. There are no plain Examples.
    Can an Example be provided?
    3. Is UUUA compatible with the method of setting ACE to acheive this result, or must the Linux client mount be "Mapped" using an Authentication source. And could that be with the new Flat File passwd and group files in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
and is there an Example available.
    Scenario:
    Windows Server 2012 Standard
    File Server (Role)
+- Server for NFS (Role) << -- installed
    General --
    Folder path: F:\Shares\raid-6-array
    Remote path: fs4:/raid-6-array
    Protocol: NFS
    Authentication --
    No server authentication
    +- No server authentication (AUTH_SYS)
    ++- Enable unmapped user access
+++- Allow unmapped user access by UID/GID
    Share Permissions --
    Name: linux_nfs_client.host.edu
    Permissions: Read/Write
    Root Access: Allowed
    Encoding: ANSI
    NTFS Permissions --
    Type: Allow
    Principal: BUILTIN\Administrators
    Access: Full Control
    Applies to: This folder only
    Type: Allow
    Principal: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
    Access: Full Control
    Applies to: This folder only
    -- John Willis, Facebook: John-Willis, Skype: john.willis7416

I'm making some "major" progress on this problem.
    1. Apparently the "semantics" issue to honor SGID or grpid in NFS on the server side or the client side has been debated for some time. It also existed as of 2009 between Solaris nfs server and Linux nfs clients. The Linux community defaulted to declaring
it a "Server" side issue to avoid "Race" conditions between simultaneous access users and the local file system daemons. The client would have to "check" for the SGID and reformulate its CREATE request to specify the Secondary group it would have to "notice"
by which time it could have changed on the server. SUN declined to fix it.. even though there were reports it did not behave the same between nfs3 vs nfs4 daemons.. which might be because nfs4 servers have local ACL or ACE entries to process.. and a new local/nfs
"inheritance" scheme to worry about honoring.. that could place it in conflict with remote access.. and push the responsibility "outwards" to the nfs client.. introducing a race condition, necessitating "locking" semantics.
This article covers that discovery and no resolution - http://thr3ads.net/zfs-discuss/2009/10/569334-CR6894234-improved-sgid-directory-compatibility-with-non-Solaris-NFS-clients
    2. A much Older Microsoft Knowledge Based article had explicit examples of using Windows ACEs and Inheritance to "mitigate" the issue.. basically the nfs client "cannot" update an ACE to make it "Inheritable" [-but-] a Windows side Admin or Windows User
[-can-] update or promote an existing ACE to "Inheritable"
Here are the pertinent statements -
"In Windows Services for UNIX 2.3, you can use the KeepInheritance registry value to set inheritable ACEs and to make sure that these ACEs apply to newly created files and folders on NFS shares."
"Note About the Permissions That Are Set by NFS Clients
The KeepInheritance option only applies ACEs that have inheritance enabled. Any permissions that are set by an NFS client will
only apply to that file or folder, so the resulting ACEs created by an NFS client will
    not have inheritance set."
    "So
If you want a folder's permissions to be inherited to new subfolders and files, you must set its permissions from the Windows NFS server because the permissions that are set by NFS clients only apply to the folder itself."
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321049
    3. I have set up a Windows 2008r2 NFS server and mounted it with a Redhat Enteprise Linux 5 release 10 x86_64 server [Oct 31, 2013] and so far this does appear to be the case.
    4. In order to mount and then switch user to a non-root user to create subdirectories and files, I had to mount the NFS share (after enabling Anonymous AUTH_SYS mapping) this is not a good thing, but it was because I have been using UUUA - Unmapped Unix
User Access Mapping, which makes no attempt to "map" a Unix UID/GID set by the NFS client to a Windows User account.
To verify the Inheritance of additional ACEs on new subdirectories and files created by a non-root Unix user, on the Windows NFS server I used the right click properties, security tab context menu, then Advanced to list all the ACEs and looked at the far
Column reflecting if it applied to [This folder only, or This folder and Subdirectories, or This folder and subdirectories and files]
    5. All new Subdirectories and files createdby the non-root user had a [Non-Inheritance] ACE created for them.
    6. I turned a [Non-Inheritance] ACE into an [Inheritance] ACE by selecting it then clicking [Edit] and using the Drop down to select [This folder, subdirs and files] then I went back to the NFS client and created more subdirs and files. Then back to the
Windows NFS server and checked the new subdirs and folders and they did Inherit the Windows NFS server ACE! - However the UID/GID of the subdirs and folders remained unchanged, they did not reflect the new "Effective" ownership or group membership.
    7. I "believe" because I was using UUUA and working "behind" the UID/GID presentation layer for the NFS client, it did not update that presentation layer. It might do that "if" I were using a Mapping mechanism and mapped UID/GID to Windows User SIDs and
Group SIDs. Windows 2008r2 no longer has a "simple" Mapping server, it does not accept flat text files and requires a Schema extension to Active Directory just to MAP a windows account to a UID/GID.. a lot of overhead. Windows Server 2012 accepts flat text
files like /etc/passwd and /etc/group to perform this function and is next on my list of things to see if that will update the UID/GID based on the Windows ACE entries. Since the Local ACE take precedence "over" Inherited ACEs there could be a problem. The
Inheritance appears to be intended [only] to retain Administrative rights over user created subdirs and files by adding an additional ACE at the time of creation.
    8. I did verify from the NFS client side in Linux that "Even though" the UID/GID seem to reflect the local non-root user should not have the ability to traverse or create new files, the "phantom" NFS Server ACEs are in place and do permit the function..
reconciling the "view" with "reality" appears problematic, unless the User Mapping will update "effective" rights and ownership in the "view"

  • How to mount windows share as a drive letter?

I have a user that has interlinking excel spreadsheets that are located on a network share. Spreadsheet A on K: links to Spreadsheet B on K:. The links in excel are defined as K:\adirectory\spreadsheetb.xls...
How do I mount a drive on a Mac, such that MacOffice will be able to follow the links?

Sorry, but you don't, at least not in that sense, as Macs don't follow Windows drive letters.
The user will have to mount the same share on the Mac desktop and link to it via standard SMB links an hope that the links translate server for server and share for share.

  • Trying to write an application to mount Windows Share in osx

    Hello,
I am very new to the osx environment and I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I have a decent amount of programming experience in windows environment, but absolutely no experience writing apps for osx. I would like to write an application that users can launch, enter their credentials and connect to a windows share which I have already designated for them. I can easily do this in automator, however I was hoping to create something where there is a little less confusion. I haven't had any luck finding any resources on this topic and I was hoping someone could give me a little guidance. thanks for your time.

I managed to make it work.
I did entry as below in /etc/fstab
    //192.168.1.1/RHEL5 /mnt/win cifs credentials=/etc/
    smbcred 0 0
    run
    mount -a
/etc/smbcred file contains username and password
now it is mounted as read write mode.

    Hi,

  • Applescript for mounting Windows Shares

I have scoured the web for this script for mounting windows shares in OS X. I am compiling it as an application and dropping it into the startup items:
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    try
    mount volume "cifs://SERVER/SHARE"
    end try
    end tell
My question is this: I have a MacBook(Pro) and use it at home and at work... I have scripts setup for both locations, to mount various shares, but when I'm at home and the work scripts run, they fail to mount (because I'm not on the work network), or when I'm at home, the work shares fail to mount, generating a dialog with something to the effect of "couldn't find that share"... I've got a dozen of these scripts, it would be nice if it would just silently fail, rather then generating multiple dialogs.
I was thinking of making the apple script check my ip address, and if it returns a work IP address, then it would go onto talking to the finder, if it doesn't find a matching IP address, then it would just end.
Or, somehow have applescript ping the server that it's trying to connect to, and on success, run the script, and on fail just end it.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
