Mountain Lion sleeping while doing tasks

Ever since installing Mountain Lion, my latest-gen iMac sleeps during long-duration tasks such as:
downloading
converting media
Under Lion I could let these run overnight. With Mountain Lion, in the morning I'll find that my iMac went into sleep mode as determined by my Energy Savings settings as if it had been left inactive. The task was interrupted and incomplete.
This is really quite annoying. None of the solutions I've seen in the forums seem to be good:
Disabling sleep altogether -- this would work, but is not energy efficient
Caffeinate program -- this would not work, since it requires you specify an awake time and the long-duration task often requires an unknown period of time
This seems like an OS issue since it was fine before this OS upgrade. Hoping Apple is aware of this and can fix.
For the first time in my long history with Apple, I'm wishing I had not upgraded to the OS and I've had to recommend that others not upgrade.

I suspect now that some widgets, and apps are setting bad hibernatemodes.

I used pmset -g, and it said I was in hibernatemode 5. I set this (sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0) closed the lid, and it came back up. I set it to 3, and the same. I moved over to my widget, and set it. Checked my mode, and it was back to 5.
I used `man pmset` it said to only use mode 0, 3, and 25! No others! I again set it (sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25) this time to 25, and it seems to work fine.
I suspect Apple made changes to their power managment, and disabled older modes. They should have set this correctly in our upgrades, instead of letting us figure it out.

I'm having the same problem with both my Vivotek wired network camera and Panasonic wireless network cameras. At first I thought this was an issue with the video framework in Mountain Lion, but if Firefox is working (I haven't tried it yet), it sounds like it may be an objective-c video library that has been changed. It's possible Firefox is using an objective-c interface that calls an objective-c function that isn't called by Safari or IP Camera Viewer, etc., (possibly a function that is on its way to be deprecated) or Firefox could use it's own library that directly calls the video framework.
Could be the Mountain Lion objective-c framework has a buffering issue.
Since this is occuring in both 3rd party software and Apple software, it sounds like it's an Apple issue. 3rd party applications typically utilize the Apple Developer objective-c frameworks to access video frameworks/libraries (for example, MJPEG). Thus, contacting 3rd party developers may not solve the situation (unless they can figure out a temporary bandaid--possibly figuring out the video framework call that Firefox uses and patching their software to do the same (not a simple task), but could still provide more feedback to Apple via their developer status.
Has anyone attempted to record from their cameras via iMovie or Final Cut Pro X HD? I will try mine later tonight to see if it records the hanging. If it does, then it's looking more and more like Apple's the culprit.
My suggestion is for everyone to file a bug report via http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

  • Mountain Lion sleep mode kills lan / internet connection - how to fix?

How do I fix Mountain Lion Sleep mode that cuts my Lan and nternet connection?

The problem is all the error messages on waking about lost connections - the machine re-stablishes all connections quickly and automatically but you are clicking off the error messages continually.
This never happened with Lion or earlier versions - it is unique to Mountain Lion.
There is something else going on because when I wake the computer I get no end of error messages that the connection was lost to the LAN or to the internet - obviously - in sleep mode or as it was going into sleep mode, the computor or a program like Aperature which has Facebook links was trying to stay connected.
Apple Care gave me a solution that lasted about one sleep cycle before the problem came back - they had me shut off the router/modem for about 60 seconds, had me shutdown the computor and do a System Controller reset while the computor was down. We then restarted the computor and all was fine when we put the machine into SLEEP mode and woke it up again - no error messages.
However, overnight, the machine went into sleep mode and when it woke up I had over twenty error messages about lost connections.
I get a new iMac later this week - we will see what happens with new machine.

  • I currently have Leopard, and there are no longer updates for it. So I must upgrade to either Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion. Without doing so I cannot update my itunes, and my ipod is no longer compatile with my mac. How can I buy the upgrade

I currently have Leopard, and there are no longer updates for it. So I must upgrade to either Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion. Without doing so I cannot update my itunes, and my ipod is no longer compatile with my mac. How can I buy the upgrade, since I do not have access to the mac store as that comes with Snow Leopard? I went to Best Buy and they said neither Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion can be bought there.

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade all the way to Mountain Lion:

Have just down loaded Yosemite over Mountain Lion, Indesign CS5 does not work ( Am dependant on it) although Bridge , Light Room and Elements operate OK How do I solve this rapidly. Can any one help on this issue. Thanks

Sorry to say it, but I think you can see from Bob's response that there's no way to solve this rapidly.
Did you take an image of your Mountain Lion install before upgrading to Yosemite? Roll back to that. If you're not in the habit of taking a snapshot of your system before performing operating system upgrades - get in that habit. If you are dependent on anything at all on hour computer, having a reliable backup method in place is essential. If you don't have a Time Capsule, or some other way to run Time Machine onto a disk that's not in your computer, go set that up yesterday.
If you can't just remove Yosemite and roll back to Mountain Lion for whatever reason, you can partition your drive so that you can install both Yosemite and Mountain Lion on the same drive, and then boot into Mountain Lion when you need to work in CS5. Or you can take your Mountain Lion disc (I assume you have one, no?) and then use it to create a virtual machine in something like VirtualBox to run Mountain Lion from inside Yosemite.

Hello, I'm using Mountain Lion and mail does not leave the mails on the server, either on iCloud nor on other suppliers (orange). They are both using iMap protocol... Any place where I could change this ? Thanks for any hall; Christian

Under what circumstances does mail "not leave the mails on the server"?
If you mean that you delete them (or move them out of the inbox) on one device and then find them not in the inbox on the server when you look from another device, that's how IMAP is supposed to work. (Note that the deletion or moving might be the result of rules you have set up in Mail.)
If you mean something else, please explain your issue in more detail.

  • Mountain Lion sleeps when using hot corner to sleep displays

Mountain Lion's Power Nap "feature" already ***** at sleeping the computer even if tasks are running (downloading files via Firefox or Chrome, encoding a video in HandBrake, etc...), but it also seems to make the computer sleep when using a hot corner to make the displays turn off.  Previously in Snow Leopard, using a hot corner to sleep the displays wouldn't sleep the computer, since the hot corner was used for "Put Displays to Sleep", not "Put Computer to Sleep".  But in Mountain Lion, using the hot corner also puts the computer to sleep, immediately, not at the timed setting in the Energy Saver preference pane.
    Why is this?
Shouldn't putting the displays to sleep only put the displays to sleep?  Why did Apple break this and not fix it in 10.8.1 or 10.8.2?

SuperDuper does do that, but the flaw has been posted regarding remote disks going to sleep and some even ejecting. That is truly where the problem arises.  If I check don't put drives to sleep that is a lot of strain on the system.

  • Mac Mini/Mountain Lion sleeps but won't wake up (or crashes) every night.

    Hi everybody,
I have a mid-2010 mac mini server on which I recently installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2 (without server stuff).
Every night, it stops responding. The led is on but the display is off and it does not respond to mouse/keyboard. I even tried remote desktop.
The only solution is the power button...
    What I already did :
    - Reset Pram/Nvram
    - Reset SMC
I also took a look at the console and I found a message that is fired just before the machine stops responding.

    Any clue ?

Hi, I'm quite interested by your issue, because i get the exact same one.
On my mini (late 2012), system doesn t wake up from sleep if it has slept for more than 1 hour.
In fact I get the exact same message as you get in your console.
When I try and wake up system before the programmed maintenance wakeup, it wakes up fine.
But as soon as this programmed time has passed, it just won t wake up, I have to force switch it off via the power button and restart it.
I have nothing plugged on my mini except : AC - Thunderbolt display, and LAN connected to my freebox.
Do you still have the issue or is it ok now for you ?
I'll try in the upcoming days to plug the freebox in the thunderbolt display's adapter instead of the macmini's rj45.

  • Clicking to re-Downloading mountain lion under purchases does nothing

I have an iMac mid-2011 that came with snow leopard and eventually I upgraded to mountain lion. With the update it became quite sluggish and after some time I decided that I might aswell try doing a clean install on the first opportunity.
Now that Mavericks came out, I decided to re-download the Mountain Lion image to keep in store (for some future clean installing); but strangely enough when I click on the download button at my App Store Purchases, I get rightfully warned that "10.8.5 is already installed. If you want to download the full OSX ML installer click continue". When I press continue, the download button becomes disabled, and stays so until I leave the purchases tab... No internet traffic, nothing... I simply doesn't want to download it. I'm puzzled.
Is it only me that can't download ML, or is it some bug with the delivery system now that Mavericks is out?
    Thanks

    Thank you Eric!

    Hello all.
I Have a Mac Mini mid 2011 with Mountain Lion 10.8.5. connected to Wi-Fi network with Time Capsule, with back to Mymac enabled as well as ssh.
The power save is set as default to wake up on lan, put to sleep the disks as nedeed.
It works fine , and i can wake him up by back to mymac or just ssh to until +/- 6 hours of inactivity, after I Can't wake him up unless by bluetooth or with the power button.
I had made a fresh install but it works realy the same.
Before update to Mountain Lion , it was working fine.
    Can someone help me
    Thanks in advance.

You don't need an expensive USB keyboard, a £10 Logitech UK - Keyboard K120 will work just fine for booting into the Recovery Partition to Repair or Reinstall OS X.

  • After Mountain Lion install,  Mail does not import

I installed Mountain Lion over a clean installation of Lion. All went well. Entered my AppleID and password, which work fine on my iPhone and MacBookAir. Mail 6.0 (iCloud server) does not import my old mail. iCal and Contacts imported fine. Your help is greatly appreciated!

That seems unusual unless you changed drives.
If you upgraded the drive it sees the computer as a different one to the original backup..
I am not sure that it isn't better to do a fresh backup but you can try and inherit the old backup..
