Mountain Lion won't install on 10.7.4. Suggestion from Apple is to completely erase harddisk and install Leopard Snow Leopard Mountain Lion. Is there no other way to install Mountain Lion

Mountain Lion won't install on 10.7.4. Suggestion from Apple is to completely erase the harddisk and install Leopard > Snow Leopard > Mountain Lion.
Is there no other way to install Mountain Lion?

I tried and failed for several hours to install Mountain Lion, and was repeatedly getting the "Recovery System" cannot be created error.  I tried all the tricks: resizing the drive partition, booting from an external boot drive, all to no avail.  After reading other users struggling with the same issue, I had determined it to be a boot camp drive error.  However, I didn't want to have to erase and begin anew when I came upon a possible solution.  I had long ago renamed my boot camp drive with a "." (".windows" for me) in order to avoid having the partition show up on my desktop.  So, I boot into windows and renamed the c: drive without the "." ("windows"), and reboot into os x.  The install then went off without a hitch.  I hope this will be helpful for others struggling with this issue that may have renamed their boot camp drives in a similar manner.

  • HFS File system with case sensitive is not accepted to install creative cloud? Is there any other way but install the whole MacOS again after formatting the drive. I cannot belief that Adobe is so bad to it's Mac customers..

After many hours setting up OS10.10 from he scratch the last step should be installing m Adobe apps again.
trying this I always get the error message that creative cloud does not accept case sensitive file systems and I shall use another drive.
This means I have to set up the whole machine again after formatting without case sensitive but then having copy problems with my NAS?
I cannot belief that Adobe is really demanding this. If so this would show how urgent this market need alternatives and some more competition...

  • How does one un-install Lion and revert to Snow Leopard?

Anyone know how to un-install Lion and revert to Snow Leopard?

    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard. I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.

  • Macbook 2006 upgrade to Leopard, Snow Leopard, or Lion?

I own a white Macbook pro 2006 core 2 duo OS x 10.4 tiger. More than anything, I want to update this computer. Is there any possible way to upgrade to leopard, snow leopard, or lion?

You can upgrade from 10.4 to10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.4 will run under 10.6. You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any Power PC applications http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/   I recently upgraded an older Core Duo MacBook (1,1) from 10.4 to 10.6. If you only want iPhoto or other single apps from iLife '11 you can get them from the App Store after you've upgraded to 10.6.6. iPhoto, iMovie or Garage Bandfor $15 each and Pages, Keynote or Numbers from iWork '09 for $20 each.
You can order a Snow Leopard10.6 install disk for $29 as long as you have at least1gb of RAM and 5gb offree space on your hard drive. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
A 10.5 Leopard disk willrun you over $100
Once you are at 10.6.8 you can buy Lion from the App Store if you have at least a model 2,1 MacBook. Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly. Also Lion doesn't run any PowerPC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. WhenSystem Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need an application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With10.7 Lion Apple dropped support for Power PC applications.

  • Why can a person buy and/or download Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion but not Mavericks???

I am running OS X Lion on a mid 2009 MacBook Pro with 4GB of ram and a 160GB HDD. I was going to download Mavericks from the app store but waited to long. Now that Yosemite is out Mavericks has disappeared from the app store. WHY? A person can buy and/or download Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion but not Mavericks??? And the kicker is that it was FREE!!! I just wanted to load Mavericks on my MacBook Pro to see how it performs. If I could live with any slow downs or quirks, I'd leave it installed. If not, I'd roll my system back. Apple's policy of ramrodding unstable product down our throat is BS. I don't want to use Yosemite until it has become more stable!

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase a redemption code at the Online Apple Store: OS X Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. Use the code to redeem a download of Mountain Lion from the App Store. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

  • Could a 2012 macbook pro from the factory been loaded by the factory with both Snow Leopard AND OSX Lion?

could a 2012 macbook pro from the factory been loaded by the factory with both Snow Leopard AND OSX Lion?

I think MBPs stopped coming with Snow Leopard installed as of the late-2011 models. That's when OS X Lion started being pre-installed on MBPs. Some earlier MBP models (2010, early-2011) had a firmware update to allow Internet Recovery (command+option+r) which would allow a reinstall of OS X Lion (purchased from the App Store) with the purchaser's AppleID/password.
I don't believe SL would even install on a 2012 MBP.

  • If I upgrade to LION on line, how do I resolve startup problems by using a disk to startup as I did with Snow Leopard?

I have 10.6.8 and am about to download LION.

    Just to let you know
1: Lion needs 2GB, but prefers 4GB of RAM
2: Requires a Intel Core 2 Duo or more recent Intel processor
3: No Rosetta, a lot of your 10.5 / 10.6 programs and drivers may not work
4: Your older older machine may not have the ability for trackpad gestures etc.
5: If your machine isn't a Early 2011 Mac or later, your results with Lion may vary, you might have a lot of issues others report on these forums with older hardware.
6: You can't use TimeMachine to restore to Snow Leopard once it's been hooked to Lion, only by making a Snow Leopard clone on a external drive. You'll need to COMPLETELY erase the Lion drive hold c booted from the 10.6 disks before restoring a Snow Leopard TM or clone, this is to erase the hidden Lion Recovery partition installed on the drive.
7: You should update all your third party software for Lion, especially any that install Kext files, or remove these third party software and their kext files from your System/Library/Extensions folder while your still in Snow Leopard.
This Terminal command will list the non-Apple kext files (doesn't work while booted into Safe mode, aka hold shift key boot)
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 } '
copy and paste the above command, do not type it, and press return to list.
8: If you have a issue and Lion is stuck on a spinning grey screen wheel, reboot holding the shift key, this will disable the QuartzExtreme and third party kext files.
9: Lion is slower than Snow Leopard, for maximum performance on Lion, backup files, erase and fresh install 10.6 then upgrade to 10.6.8 then to Lion and update, then install Lion ONLY programs from fresh sources and finally files from backup.
10: Maintain two separate hardware copies of your data in easy to access ability (not all TimeMachine) in case you need to rebuild the operating system from scratch or if your TM drive is borked and you don't know it yet.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16276201#16276201
11: Lion changes a lot of things, your going to lose Front Row, Spaces, Exposé, the scrolling direction is backwards and more restrictions and noob proofing. It might make you angry, it might not work, however if you clone or keep your TM drive disconnected, you can recover to Snow Leopard without much fuss and leave Lion for a new machine as Lion begins a whole new level of bloating to retire older hardware prematurely, likely for quads cores and up.
    Good Luck

  • How do I uninstall OS Lion and revert to Snow Leopard

Hi all, I need to use Microsoft Office Mac Version in my work. And OS X Lion don't support that. I am desparate to know how do I unistall the OS X Lion, and revert to Snow Leopard so that I can resume working on my MacBook Pro. Please help.....

MS Office for mac 2004 is indeed incompatible I believe but 2008 onwards isn't. You should consider upgrading your MS Office to be compatible. Apple is not responsible for making 3rd party software compatible with its OS, its the 3rd party developers who updates their softwares and drivers.
You can certainly revert back to Lion BUT it depends what type of machine do you have?Did you purchase Lion as an upgrade?is your machine Lion preinstalled?

I recently did a factory restore on my imac mountain lion, but when i try to download OS x again apple is not recognizing my id and password

So, what exactly did you do for a "factory restore"? Which method did you try?
Did you go to the app store > Purchases? Is it listed there?
Or, did you try using the recovery method (Command + R keys or Command + Option + R keys while restarting)? Are you able/unable to reach Apple's servers to download the OS?

  • If my mac runs on leopard os, and not te snow leopard os , does this mean i can't purchase the new lion os?

if my mac runs on the leopard OS and not the snow leopard os, does this mean i can't purchase the new lion os?

We probably don't know the whole story yet.
The big announcement Steve Jobs made was, of course, a sales pitch with all the "gee whiz" stuff -- no nitty-gritty, gory details.
Apple's "How to buy" post (http://www.apple.com/macosx/how-to-buy/) clearly says "To upgrade on day one" -- no mention of day two, or twenty.
It would be rather silly for Apple to take the position that, if you don't have broadband (for a 4 GB download), they don't want you as a customer.  So it's likely there will be an alternative for such folks, such as a DVD or USB stick, possibly for a nominal extra fee.  If so, that might also allow updating directly from Leopard.
When the actual release date is announced, there should be more details.
