  • P45 platinum bios/oc issues / Click bios info

damn board is annoying me, it's currently running bios 1.7b9 but it's being a twit, firstly getting it to run the memory at 1066 (I've got 2*2gb kingston hyperX pc8500) is proving really difficult yet it was easy on my previous gigabyte p35 board. The only success I have had so far is to knock the multi down to 11 from 12.5 and thats got me fairly close, cpu is an E5200 btw and currently at fsb of 341 with the ram at 511 , ram voltage doesn't have any effect though I haven't messed with the finer voltages which are on auto
more annoying is the fact that it will do the power up / power straight back off thing 2 or more times when switching on before staying on yet is completly stable when it's on, also it seems to have trouble with the time which keeps changing when powered off, bios battery is fine and I've cleared the bios several times including with the battery removed
I'm putting the time and possibly the power up issues down to the bios version as it was fine on the old 1.6, but is there any other bios between 1.6 and 1.7b9 that would be better to use or shall I just go back to 1.6?
also this Uefi "click" bios which seems rather secretive and mysterious, noticed that there is one available for the P45 platinum but there is absolutly no info on it, has anyone tried it and is it worth me trying it?

    Try:
    - DRAM Voltage = 2.1V
    - DDR_Reference Voltage Settings (Both): 0.9550V
    - Spread Spectrum = Disabled

If you expect it to solve system and memory overclocking issues:  No.
If you have no special needs for an UEFI Implementation (Software Wise): No.
If you simply want to look at it and see how it works:  Well, go ahead.

  • Question on P45 Platinum bios setting for "Adjust PCI Frequency (MHz)"

    System:
P45 Platinum updated to bios 1.6
Intel Q9400 CPU with Xigmatek Heatsink
    620W PSU
    8BG (2x4 slots) Cosair TWIN2X4096-8500C5D PC2-8500 1066MHz
PowerColor 1GB ATI HD 3670 Video card
System runs almost fine at the default setting.  As it boot to blank screen a few times.  Hard reset to boot into system fine.  Once a while, system just froze and need hard reboot.  But seem to stable enough (temperature around 26C)
I wanted to overclock to 3GHz.  But as I just increased FSB from 333 to 340, the system will not boot or it will boot and then locked up after logon to window.   I left everything at auto.  Do I need to set the PCI clock?  It is default at auto.

    Quote
I have to constantly change the FSB/Dram ratio to keep the RAM frequency between 800-900 for it to stable.  Otherwise, the system will reboot by itself. Is that because I used all four slot of RAM?
Well, the fact that all memory slots are populated makes the matter a little more complicated, but the main problem is elsewhere:  The Intel P45 Chipset natively only supports DDR2-667 and DDR2-800 modules.  In addition to that, your memory modules are not "real" DDR2-1066 modules, but DDR2-800 memory sticks with a permission to overclock and overvolt them to DDR2-1066 @~2.1V.
Try these settings to try to raise your memory clock speed farther:
    - Enhance Setting (Try all settings here: "Enabled", "Disabled" and "Auto")
    - DRAM Voltage = 2.1V
    - DDR_VREF_A = 0.955V
    - DDR_VREF_B = 0.955V
    - Spread Spectrum = Disabled
Usually, the reduction of the DDR Reference Voltages compensates stability problems that are related to overclocking/overvolting the memory to DDR2-1066 on this board.  There is no guarantee that it will work for you, but you may as well give it shot.

Everything else is auto and Core Center is showing:
    vcore 1.21v
    memory 1.92v
    nb 1.12v
CPU temperature after an hour of usage: 23C
You don't wanna use MSI Dual Core Center for temperature monitoring.  The tool is unable to read/calculate the Core Temperatures of your processor which are based digitial sensors implemented in each processor core.  The data these sensors collect is stored in specific CPU registers that can be accessed by tools like Core Temp, Real Temp, Everest Ultimate and Speedfan (there are more tools of course).  The "CPU Temperature" value shown in BIOS and by MSI Dual Core Center are based on the readings of an analog sensor of unknown location.  It is uncertain, what this value actually refers to and it is also not very reliable.

I don't think there should be such an option for SATA devices (?).
But you might want to try USB Safely Remove which claims to make it available anyway.
They just released version 4.0 last week (and gave away free 1-year licenses to celebrate that).

I was just wondering if anyone has any info if MSI will make a more robust bios after 1.5 that will support overclocking of CPU voltages. As it is I can only get 2.8 GHZ on my phenom 9850  because of the inability to up CPU voltages. My friend has the newest ASUS board which has a much better bios and he's been able to overclock his 9850 to 3.36 stable with almost identical hardware to mine.
If you are refering to the newest 790GX boards: they will simply overclock the CPU higher than a 790FX board will, because of the ACC (Advanced Clock Calibration) function of the new SB750 southbridge. Not really a matter of BIOS options, but a matter of a newer chipset...
You would probably match the results of the new ASUS board using the new MSI board, the DKA790GX Platinum for example...

I dont' know what people say but one thing is clear: MSI 965 Platinum is JUNK!!
The only cpu which could be clocked is p4 3Ghz. I've clocked it to 3800, bios ver 1.4
with bios 1.5 1.6 system reset at 3500.  1.7 was ok again.
Next cpu E2140 cloked from 1600 to 2144+corecell=>2270. note that sistem won't boot if fsb higher than 268 in bios (ver 1.5 1.6 1.7 1.8) but could be clocked if DOT activated.
Next cpu E6750 clocked from 2.66 to 2.98  FSB 366. with fsb higher than 370 sistem reset, also with DOT i see higher instability.
OT: i read on this forum that MSI told us that this board is for gamers/not overcloking ))))
well then, why the F*** put PLATINUM? it's the same S*** like NEO but 60E more..for what?
So my friends, i ordered an ASUS(i don't like brand but i like quality), i'm sad 'cause i've used MSI since 815E but now even P35 Platinum with rev1.1 is not more than a BULK, JUNK (look how poor clocking is).

As you may have seen on my own post, I also ran into lock ups on the memory side with the same board and OCZ 1066 memory. Turns out that the memory is actually factory "overclocked" DDR2-667. Anyhow, my P45 is stable now, running a Q9550 E0 stepping at 3,4Ghz. Ran Prime 95 for approx 4 hours and my CPU core temp reaches 60 deg C with the individual cores between 45 and 55 deg. I installed a Freezer 7 Pro cooler right from the start and it is very effective and very quiet in general use.
I have a question though to DougKmcse. You say your Dominators posted straight away at 1066. Have you checked in CPU-Z SPD what the reported maximum bandwidth is? I would be interested to know as I want to replace the memory I have with something that will give me true 1066 without problems on the board. Secondly, I am on BIOS v1.5. Did you flash to a beta BIOS, and have you had any issues since? Appreciate any feedback.
As a matter of interest, I see that the 3,4GHz barrier on the Q9550 is mentioned here as well.I have experienced the same. I can run my system stable up to 400MHz and after that instability. Tried 420 and got a solid lock. Then I read a post somewhere else where it was mentioned that one should not try between 400 and 470, but beyond that it seems to be OK again up to about 500MHz. Well, I tried that, 500MHz with a 7 multiplier. And what do you know, the system actually booted, but then my "Fake" 1066 memory wasn't up to it. I am also too inexperienced to want to attempt to change voltages on the board, barring VRAM. So perhaps if your memory is up to it, you may want to try that to get beyong the 3,4 GHz barrier.

It started off when it recognised my memory at 800Mhz when infact it was 1066 DDR2 Dominator.
Your memory modules are recognized as DDR2-800 modules, because the SPD-Chips of these modules do not have an SPD-Profile for DDR2-1066 which the BIOS could detect to set memory clock speed to DDR2-1066.  Your modules present themselves as DDR2-800 modules to the BIOS (because they are basically DDR2-800 modules).  The BIOS can only read SPD profiles, not what Corsair has actually printed onto sticker that is on each module.
    Quote
4gb DDR2 1066 (not sure if it infact does run at this)
If you check the official Corsair datasheet for your modules, you will see that it will say that these modules were tested @1066 MHz @2.1-2.2V, not that they are DDR2-1066 modules.  At the bottom of the datesheet you will find a brief note telling you that the actual OC results "may vary".  I am not sure which memory related settings you have tried so far. If you need advice and suggestions regarding memory settings, please let us know the precise model name/number of your modules and tell us which settings you have tried so far.

... not above 400 MHz FSB Clock Speed.  The memory bus frequency is tied to FSB Frequency.  The lowest possible ratio between FSB and Memory Frequency is 1:1.  Which ultimately means that when you raise the FSB Clock beyond 400 Mhz, then an effective memory speed of DDR2-800 (400 MHz) becomes impossible.  It will ALWAYS be higher than that, in a linear relation to the FSB Frequency you set.
okay, yea this was what I noticed too. Thanks.

I'm fully aware of the difference on EIST and C1E.
    Quote
The issue I had with EIST was that I had to clear CMOS in order to actually get it disabled (just booting to BIOS and setting it to disabled changed nothing what so ever).
If EIST is disabled and C1E is enabled, the multiplier is still reduced when the system is IDLE. You did not say anything about C1E in your first post and even in you reply you have not told us if you made sure if C1E was disabled as well.  As I said before, since in effect, C1E does the same thing as EIST (multiplier and VCore adjustment), even if EIST was disabled, you probably thought it was still working, but what you saw working was not EIST but C1E.  Clearing CMOS did not solve an "EIST-is-still-working-even-though-it-is-disabled-problem", but actually only forced C1E to be set to disabled by default.  The bottom line is, there never was a problem in the first place.
    Quote
Bottom line: The BIOS allows for adjustment of the Vcore, only it does not seem to be happening. The simple question is: why?
    What have I missed?
What you are decribing is a know problem with BIOS v1.4.  It was fixed right after it became obvious.  All newer BETA BIOS Releases do not have this problem (1.5b1-1.5b6).

I would probably consider not being able to turn the TLB errata fix off a problem. Going from the original BIOS (v1.0 I think) to 1.3 lowered my computers performance by about 10%ish. This includes FPS in games and all 3DMark scores.
Now it could be something totally different causing the lowered performance as I do not know when MSI added the "fix". I never run virtualization programs so the fix does only harm in terms of performance.
I did ask MSI about the posibility to disable TLB fix in BIOS and this what they answered:

It stabilizes the power for the PCIe slots(benifit for graphics cards---mainly ones without their own power connectors).  If you are fine, then you're probably okay with not adding it, but, it can't hurt having it connected and gives an extra layer of stability.

Yes, that is correct.  The board powers up now but apparently, per the manual, the code it's giving me (LED groups 1-4 all red) is that my CPU is damaged or installed incorrectly.  I'm really hoping this isn't the case but I guess I'll have to look into it when I get home... luckily I have a spare mobo/CPU I can use for testing.
Anyone know any other reason to get that error?  Hopefully not involving a damaged CPU?
