Moving a chart in numbers

Hi,
I'm a recent ex-Excel user and now i'm working with Numbers and well i'm a bit lost. I have to get rid of my old habits and get used to Numbers. Now I'm trying to make a chart on Sheet1 while data are on Sheet2, and I can't manage. I managed to create a chart with data on the same sheet so I thought I could move it on the right sheet, but it doesn't work either. Can somebody help me?

Hi Mischievious,
Here is a table with its associated Chart on the same Sheet:
Here is a shot of the Sheets Pane to the left of the Numbers window:
In the Sheets Pane, drag the Chart to another Sheet:
Table 1 on Sheet 2 is not the same as Table 1 on Sheet 1. The Chart will continue to take its data from Table 1 on Sheet 1. Numbers automatically adjusts the references when you move an object.
Regards,
Ian.

  • How can I display a specified row from a chart in a 2nd chart in Numbers?

I have a chart in Numbers '09, which contains tasks with their due dates. This chart is rather large and is divided into several categories (i.e. home, work, taxes, etc.). Each row in the chart has a task name and due date in addition to other information in columns. Since it has many tasks and they are divided into categories, it's difficult to check what tasks are due this week. I have been trying to add a small chart to display only the task name and due date from all categories due in the next 10 days.
I assume I should add a chart in the work sheet and use some string of functions to find tasks due this week, and copy them to the 2nd chart. If someone could suggest a string of functions, or tell me an easier way to do this I would be grateful.
    Jim

    Hi Jim,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Numbers '09 forum.
Using the correct vocabulary would make your request much easier to read. A "chart" in Numbers is a bar graph, a line graph, or a pie chart.
What you're referring to as a "chart" is a "table."
    So:
You have a table listing tasks and their due dates, plus other information (presumably all separate columns).
You want a separate table listing only those tasks whose due date falls within the next ten days.
Here are two ways to make those tasks stand out. The first uses conditional formatting to change the fill colour of the Date cells on the first table; the second uses an index and VLOOKUP to transfer the urgent tasks to a second table.
The conditional formatting rules shown are applied to all cells in column A. Dates within 5 days of "today" (January 13, 2011 in the example) get a red fill and white type; dates within 10 days a yellow fill.
The same rules, with effective periods reduced to 2 and 4 days, are applied to dates in the Urgent table below.
Here a column is added to the left of what was column A to hold an index created by the formula below, entered into the new cell A2 and filled down to the bottom of that column. As noted in the header cell, this column may be hidden.
    =IFERROR(IF(DATEDIF(TODAY(),B,"D")<11,DATEDIF(TODAY(),B,"D")+ROW()/10000,66000), 66000)
The formula provides a unique numerical value in each row where the date is less than 11 days from today, and a large fixed value in rows where the date is before today or more than 10 days away.
On the second table, "Urgent" the formula below, entered in A2 and filled down the full column and right to column B transfers the dates and tasks due within ten days from the table "All tasks" in order of 'days to complete,' with the earliest ones at the top of the list.
    =IF(SMALL(All tasks :: $A,ROW()-1)<66000,VLOOKUP(SMALL(All tasks :: $A,ROW()-1),All tasks :: $A$2:$C$21,COLUMN()+1,FALSE),"")
Descriptions of all the functions used, including examples, may be found in the iWork Formulas and Functions User Guide. Details on Conditional formatting may be found in the Numbers '09 User Guide. Both guides may be downloaded through the Help menu in Numbers '09. Both are recommended.

  • How do I change the line color in a chart in Numbers on my iPad?

How do I change the line color in a chart in Numbers on my iPad?

Whenever I try to shift+direct select it thinks I want to move the line, so as I shift + direct select and drag my mouse across the line (to highlight it all) it moves a chunk of the line and turns it into a near perpendicular line.
I found the appearance window, it just says "Path" (the color I want it to be that it's not)
    "Stroke" 4pt
"Fill" (the color I want it to be that it's not)
    "Opacity": Default
And some other buttons. I think I'll try the help line tomorrow, I know I saw a customer service number somewhere and I'm only here because the chat was unavailable. This is only one of my 3 problems with my assignment so I'll search here for answers to the other two. Learning new things is rarely fun.

  • Trying to link a chart from Numbers to Pages

"To update a linked chart in Keynote or Pages:
Make sure that the Numbers spreadsheet containing the updated chart is saved. In Keynote or Pages, select the chart and click the Refresh button."
Where is the Refresh button, please? It may be really obvious but I can't find it. Thanks

    Hi procrastina,
fruhulda's comments motivated me try this. Please follow this from the Pages'09 User Guide:
Updating a Chart Copied from a Numbers Document If  you’ve  created  a  chart  in  Numbers,  you  can  copy  it  and  paste  it  into  your  Pages   document.  After  it’s  been  pasted  into  Pages,  the  chart  remains  linked  to  the  data   tables it references in Numbers. To change the chart data, open the original Numbers document and edit the data there, save the Numbers document, and then refresh the chart data in Pages.
To update a chart after you’ve updated its linked Numbers table:
Select the chart on the page and click the Refresh button that appears.
Note: You must save the Numbers document before copying and pasting your chart into your Pages document and after editing the Numbers data tables that the chart references.
    Repeat,
Note: You must save the Numbers document before copying and pasting your chart into your Pages document and after editing the Numbers data tables that the chart references.
Then you will see the Refresh buttton (recycle arrows to the right of your chart in Pages):
    Regards,
    Ian.
P.S. In Australia and UK, we call that a graph, not a chart.

  • Interactive Charts in Numbers 3.0

I've read the help here but thus far haven't figured out how to use the new interactive charts that made their debut in Numbers 3.0.  For me sliders don't slide and buttons don't push. So I'm "missing something." Well, actually, it seems I'm missing everything.
Ian gave an interesting example of an interactive chart created in Numbers 2.3.  But these new ones in 3.0 (I think) are supposed to do something new.
Has anyone figured them out?  If so, how-to examples and use cases (what would one use them for) would be much appreciated.
    SG

    Hi Arthur,
Well that turned out to be really easy!  I added columns, chose the cells in the table, Chart>Interactive Chart and Numbers set up a chart with a slider that cycles through the rows (or columns, via the Plot Columns as Series/Plot Rows as Series switcher at lower left after clicking Edit Data References). Here I get eight different views on the data without an extra lookup table or a formula.
Not sure about the default colors, but this is convenient. And great for displaying data on an iPad to show people rather than printing out a whole bunch of different charts. Thanks!

  • Problem: chart-legend (numbers) doesn't copy into Keynote

I have some charts from numbers (imported xls-files) that i want to copy into a keynote-presentation.
The chart can be pasted into the presentation, but the chart-legend never shows up.
I've tried selecting and copying the chart and the chart-legend but that doesn't work. Copying only the chart-legend also doesn't work.
Can somebody help me out here?
    thanks,

    Jerrold Green1 wrote:
For some reason, you need to Arrange > Group your Chart and Legend before Copying if you want them to stay together. Not sure why this is so, but the fix works.
    My guess is:
when we copy paste without leaving a given program, we use a structure of the clipboard defined by the program itself. This structure gives the ability to copy paste different kinds of objects.
For instance, if we copy a chart and its legend in Numbers and paste in a different location in a Numbers document, which may be a different one, we paste the chart and the legend.
When we leave the source program to a enter a different program, if the proprietary clipboard format of this program is different than the source one, the clipboard's contents is "normalized" to match the destination program's requirements. When we pass from Numbers to Keynote, a clipboard containing a chart and a legend is normalized as a graphic object.
If we try to paste in a TextEdit document formatted as a Text one we will get nothing.
If we paste in a Textedit document formatted as RTF, we will get the chart.
    My hope is
    (a) that the iWork team build a proprietary clipboard structure common to the different components of the suite. I feel that this may be done.
    (b) that the operating system is able to transfer the proprietary clipboard components between two programs using the same. I'm not sure that this requirement is satisfied at this time.

  • A chart in Numbers causing crashes

A chart in Numbers is causing Numbers to slow down & stutter when it is seleced or edited.  The memory is eventually depleted and Numbers crashes.  I'm using Numbers 2008 1.0.3.  This chart is pulling info from formulas in a large table.  That table is pulling infor from several smaller charts.  This is odd to me and it is the first time I have had this problem.  I have restart Numbers & the MBP.  In both cases, the memnory is returned the same & I restart.  The file is fine for a good while unless I start messing with that chart.  Then, the free memory excellerates it's disappearing act & Numbers crashes.  I will pay closer attention to the wired, active, & inactive.  I use iStat to follow this stuff.  What could be causing the memory disappearing act & the crashing?  It's just a chart.  I did see other posting about memory loss for Numbers 2009, but nothing within a year or that really addressed my issue.

There are only 4 lines with 50 points or less in each line.  Maybe my definition of large isn't so large.
I didn't upgrade to Numbers 2009, because it came out so quick that I thought it wouldn't have many changes & I thought another update would come out.  I have been waiting for the next update ... and waiting.  I'm surprised it has taken this long & am guessing that another should be out any time, now.  It has been 5 years and Numbers is missing some seemingly simple features like scatter plots & linear equations.
What would b the advantage of upgrading to Numbers 2009 that would be worth it & how would it eliminate this glitching and crashing?

  • Problems pasting pie chart from Numbers into Pages table

    Hello,
I'm trying to paste a pie chart from Numbers into a table cell in Pages 09 but it doesn't allow me. Would you know why?
    Thanks,
    Pedro

Probably because it is a smart object connected back to the Numbers document.
If you want it purely as a graphic, try copying the chart in Numbers switching to Preview.app and going command n which will make it a pdf file, then copy that and paste that into Pages. But it will no longer be a live chart.

  • Diverging stacked bar chart in Numbers?

Am looking for instructions on how to create a diverging stacked bar chart in Numbers. I can create this type of chart in Excel, but I want to provide the instructions to someone else who uses Numbers.  For an example, see figure 3 on this page: http://realnumeracy.wordpress.com/2013/12/11/diverging-stacked-bar-charts/  Thank you in advance!

Create a table where the first row is a header and the first column is a header.
To make a header select the row(or column) then use the contextual menu to convert to a header:
    similar procedure for a row.
Enter the data for your chart.
select columns B and C by clicking the column header for column B, then shift-click the column C.
Now select the stacked, horizontal bar chart from the charts menu:

  • Interactive chart in Numbers

Is it possible to delete bars in an interactive chart in Numbers? The chart part, not the table. In other words, the chart is too wide and I only want 3 bars, not 5.

    Illustrating Badunit's point:
Click the chart, then Edit Data References.  You will see something like this.
If you want to remove North from the chart you click it either in the chart or the blue dot in the table and hit delete.
As for printing it to pdf, if you don't want the table with it, you could click the chart, command-x to cut, add a new sheet (the big plus sign uper left), and in a new sheet command-v to paste. Then File > Print, select the sheet that has the chart chart,  hit Print... lower right, and choose the PDF option lower left.

  • Cannot drag charts from Numbers into Keynote

I have created charts in Numbers, but I cannot get them into Keynote. I have tried dragging and dropping, but they will not leave the Numbers screen. I have tried copying (or cutting) and pasting, but it does not work either.
I really need to move some things over. Any help?
    Thanks so much!

    Hello
At this time, I am unable to identify the wrongdoer.
What are you exactly copying from Numbers?
I copied the chart when its handles where displayed.
After copying, enter the Finder and select the menu item Edit > Show Clipboard.
If it correctly display the chart, it's that the Copy process was correctly done.
    Enter Keynote.
    Go to Edit menu.
If the Paste item is greyed, it's that something is odd or that the Presentation is not in Edit mode.
If it is in Edit mode, close/quit the program.
    Trash its preferences file:
    <bootVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Keynote.pli st
    Empty the trash
    restart the program.
I hope that this time it will behaves flawlessly.

  • Is there a way to create a clustered stacked chart in Numbers?

I was trying to create a clustered stacked chart in Numbers.  Looks like there are way to do it for excel (multiple steps), but these steps aren't working/available in Numbers.  Trying to make a chart that compares different years (clustered) sources of income (stacked) for each month of each year.  Similar in apearence to this (http://peltiertech.com/WordPress/clustered-stacked-column-bar-charts/) where the comodities would be a month, Q1-Q2 Budget representing year 2010, Q1-Q2 Actual representing year 2011.

    Hi Brent,
I believe that you have two options.
    1. Interlace your categories and then leave a blank row to separate clusters
    2. Make separate charts and overlay them with an offset.

  • Can I chart in Numbers using AppleScript

I have just started learning AppleScript so that I can automate some business processes and save myself some time. Because of better design and ease of use I use the latest version of iWork and don't even have Office installed on my Mac, nor do I want to install it. However, one area I cannot work out is how to automate the creation of a chart in Numbers using AppleScript.
Is this possible? If so, how, and if not, why not?

Answering questions like : how may we do this or that, is what we are supposed to try to achieve in this forum.
Answering questions like yours : why this or that, can't be seriously done here.
Here you ask to end users like you. We don't belong to the teams designing the apps.
We just may try to guess.
To build tables and charts Pages and Numbers share the same pieces of code so there is no technical reasons able to explain the omission.
So I guess that, as Pages is in its 4th version, designers had more time available to embed features in the AppleScript support than those working upon Numbers.
What's funny is that there is a minimal support for charts in Pages (as well as a microscopic support for tables) but there is a correct support for tables (which may be enhanced) in Numbers but nothing for charts.
Honestly, I really don't think that the difference is huge.
I posted my script too fast.
I forgot to insert the handler allowing us to bring a sheet at front which is required to apply GUIScripting.
It's probably the main drawback of the need to use GUIScripting here.
I don't waste time trying to apply some edit tasks to the charts.
I just wanted to fill the gap between Pages and Numbers about scripting charts.
    Here is an enhanced version.

  • Please help! Problems posting chart from Numbers into Pages

    Hello
I've come across a strange problem, and I'm sure I'm missing some simple trick.
I have created a chart in Numbers, it looks nice, and crisper than the equivalent Excel diagram. However, when I paste it into Pages, I can't resize it! It seems to preserve the fonts that I specified in Numbers, and so it doesn't become smaller. And I can't see any way of reducing the font size in this chart. And it doesn't resize nicely when I drag the box corner in Numbers.
The thing is, it's really quite straightforward to create a chart in Excel, and then copy it into Pages, and it resizes and everything with no problems.
Can anyone give me some pointers as to what I should be doing, please? I'm using the 09 versions.

    I suggest you experiment.
It sounds as if you will be satisfied with a simple graphic version of the chart, however I tested my recommendation and there are bugs in what gets saved, some of the text of the labels is lost and the legend gets rearranged.
It may be necessary to print the entire Numbers sheet to .pdf and crop that down to the graph.
The 2nd method of copying over the actual chart to Pages works quite well and the data appears in the linked data in Pages. Just make sure to create the linkage from Numbers to first save the Numbers document before copying and pasting the chart into Pages.
A black tag will appear on the chart when you select it. The circled arrows in the tag allow you to update the chart from updated (and saved) data in the original Numbers chart. There is also an option in the tag to unlink the chart and make it solely a Pages chart.
As to text not resizing in Pages, this is generally so in grouped objects. Pages will resize all the graphical parts of a grouped set of objects but keep the fonts at the same point size. This can either be a good or bad thing depending on your viewpoint. Personally my view is that everything should scale as expected.
In a live chart you can click on each part including the fonts and change their appearance and formatting directly, using the usual methods.
