MS SQL Server 2012 Developers Freeze At ODBC Setup
I am attempting to create an ODBC connection using my local computer's
Admin Tools-ODBC Connection interface.
I can select the MS SQL Server driver type, enter the odbc name I want to call the connection , then click browse so to look for sql databases in a local install of MS SQL Server 2012 Developers Edition
The odbc setup goes into a search mode that ran for over 4 hours and the process could not be terminated using Task Manager - End Task.
After rebooting, I tried the Options - Create New Connection using Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools interface and get the same result where I again have to reboot the computer to stop the setup.
Is this an expected result when setting up an odbc this way and/or is there another way odbcs are created so to connect to MS SQL Server 2012 databases?
I am a database
Hello,
I can't reproduce this issue on my test environment, and I'm sure what do you mean hang on search mode while create a SQL Server ODBC Data Source. Could you please share a screenshot about this issue?
I would suggest you take a look at the following articles about how to create a ODBC DSN to SQL Server 2012:

SQL Server 2012 Developers Edition
Will SQL Server 2012 Dev. Ed. work on Small Business Server Standard 2011?
Thank youi
Brian GeregachHello,
Yes, but since you have SBS 2011 Standard you need to apply SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2 first, then try to install SQL Server 2012.
If you have SBS 2011 Essentials, you don’t need to apply Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. You can install SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition.
Hope this helps.

JoeyHi,
You can use the following query to achieve the version of SQL Server.
Select @@version
As the previous comments, you can either upgrade to SQL Server 2012 or attach the AdventureWorks2008 database in the link which KevinNicholas provided.

ODBC Problems with SQL Server 2012 on Virtual Machine
I am having problem with my application after my IT department upgraded to SQL Server 2012 with error "ConngetDataToModify.vi:1"<ERR>Object 0x2222222 is not valid. I have 4 servers running the same executable without problem before the upgraded. However, after the upgrade 2 of these Server are having the problem with the ODBC connection. Here are my setup, the application was created using LabView8.5, we have 2 physical server box running Window Server 2003, 2 Virtual Machine on Windows Server 2008, and a Virtual Machine with SQL 2012 Server. The 2 physical server running the executable without a problem after the upgrade, but the 2 Virtual Server were unable to connects to the ODBC connection. Anyone have any idea why this is happening , it is the problem with compatibility between my application with Server 2008 and SQL 2012 Server, or is there a problem with both beings Virtual Servers? As I said, the 2 physical Server seem to be running without any problem with the upgrade.
My guess is that the problem is not specifically with LV. This should be relatively easy to check if you create a UDL file and double click it. This opens a Microsoft wizard which allows you to configure and test DB connections (the UDL file itself is basically just a text file which holds a connection string). If it doesn't work there, it won't work in LV.
As for what the actual problem is, a common culprit is the firewall, which is easy enough to check by disabling it. Another option is the surface area configuration of SQL Server, which will not allow network connections unless you tell it to.
It should probably also be noted that LV 8.5 is not officially supported on Windows Server. I'm assuming that's not the issue, but be aware of it.

Master Data Services not available under shared feature while installing SQL server 2012
Hi,
I am trying to install Master Data Services but do not see the option to select MDS under the shared features when going through the SQL server 2012 installation. I have the SQL server 2012 SP1 (64 bit) install files. I have also installed SP2. I havent
found anything online about the issue.
Can someone please advise?
I have a screenshot of the installation screen which I will attach as soon as I am able to get my account verified. Thanks!Hi Revees,
This might be a very naïve and also out of the original scope of the thread question.
We are thinking of going with the developer edition. We have 2/3 developers and some other testers and business users.
1) I understand that we need a developer license for each developer. But would we need a license for the business user. Can they have a sort of read access to the dbs?
2) If a developer has MSDN subscription, Would they need to purchase the license too assuming we purchase the developer edition of the software (and not download it using the MSDN subscription)?
Thanks for your assistance! -

SQL server 2012 Enterprise problems
Hello to Everybody!
In my company we are using the evaluating version of SQL server 2012 Enterprise. We have installed the DB into a Windows server 2008 R2 64bit with RAM 32GB and Intel Xeon CPU E5-2620 (2 processors).
We access the SQL db with a PLM software to manage materials and components codifications.
Our users tell me that every hour ca the system freeze and remains blocked for about a minute or two. Then the block passes and the situation becames normal again. Users don't lost the work began before the block and can continue to work after it.
Did you have already heard something like this? How can we solve?
Thank you in adviceHi, the query that you wrote give me no output result.
I've found that query by googling:

SQL Server 2012 Import-Module 'sqlps' breaks the "Test-Path" PowerShell cmdlet
I've run into something that is "very" frustrating with the new SQL Server 2012 PowerShell module. When I Import the module, it breaks the "Test-Path" cmdlet when trying to test a UNC path to a directory.
For example:
"Test-Path -path \\server\dirname" returns true as expected before the sqlps module is imported. But after you import the SQL Server module "Import-Module 'sqlps' –DisableNameChecking" the same Test-Path
now returns false.
If I run the following in Windows PowerShell ISE I see the following results:
Test-Path -path "\\server\directoryname"
Import-Module 'sqlps' –DisableNameChecking
Test-Path -path "\\server\directoryname"
True
False
Anyone have any idea what's going on?
UPDATE: after more testing, it looks like the problem happens with any cmdlet that references a UNC. The New-Item has the same problem. Before importing 'sqlps', New-Item is able to create a directory at the UNC path specified, but ater importing
'sqlps', the New-Item fails.
Thanks!Hi Mikea730,
Sqlps.exe doesn't take advantage of a couple of these nice PowerShell V2 cmdlets without doing a bit of configuring in your environment.

Read Oracle 10g Tables to SQL Server 2012
Hi all,
I have Oracle 10g on an XP machine, and use the 'Oracle in OraDB10g_home1' driver to read the data. I have another Windows Server 2008 R2 machine on the same network, with SQL Server 2012 on it. What is the best way to read Oracle Tables in SQL Server? Can I setup an ODBC link from my Windows Server machine to the Oracle Database (which would require me to download an Oracle ODBC driver)? Or is the best way to export the required tables from Oracle (e.g. into csv format) and import them into SQL?
Thanking you in advance,

Share Data Source between multiple report projects in Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services
I have a reports solution in 2012 which contains multiple report projects one each for target deployment folder and we use TFS 2012 for report deployment.
We have a template project which has a bunch of template reports and all the datasources used in different reports.
When I develop a report, I cannot "Preview" in TFS but, for deploy this used to work fine util the reports solution was in TFS 2010 & Visual Studio 2008 R2. Since we moved to TFS 2012 & SSRS 2012 not being able to deploy till I create all
the necessary datasources for each project and now all the developers complaining that they cannot develop reports in TFS itself as they cannot preview (this problem was existing previously) and now not being able to deploy as it errors for each report "Could
not find specified rds file". I tried messing around with the .rptproj file DataSources tag that did not help either by modifying it like below.
<DataSources>
<ProjectItem>
<Name>DB.rds</Name>
<FullPath>Template\Data Source\DB.rds</FullPath>
</ProjectItem>
</DataSources>
Is there a way I could share a Data Source between multiple projects in Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services?
Thanks in advance.............
IoneHi ione721,
According to your description, you want to create a shared data source which works for multiple projects. Right?
In Reporting Services, A shared data source is a set of data source connection properties that can be referenced by multiple reports, models, and data-driven subscriptions that run on a Reporting Services report server. It must be within one project.
We can't specify one data source working for multple projects. In this scenario, we suggest you put those reports into one project. Otherwise you can only create one data source for each project.
If you have any question, please feel free to ask.
Best Regards,
Simon Hou -
Custom Data Provider Not Registered in Report Server (Sql Server 2012)
We have a simple test report project set up and can preview the reports with no errors or problems from the designer. We can deploy the report project, but when trying to view the reports from the browser, we get the following error:
An error as occurred during report processing, (rsProcessingAborted)
An attempt has been made to use a data extension 'LiMeDAS' that is either not registered for this report server or is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services. (rsDataExtensionNotFound)
I have followed this article that explained how to register a data provider extension:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-ca/library/bb326409.aspx
I have placed the assemblies in:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS11.LIMEDAS\Reporting Services\ReportServer\bin
Added the following line to the rsreportserver config file (inside the <extensions><data> tags)
<Extension Name="LiMeDAS" Type="Limedas.Data.Provider.LimedasConnection,Limedas.Data.Provider"/>
and finally added the following to the rssrvpolicy config file (inside the top level CodeGroup tag):
<CodeGroup class="UnionCodeGroup" version="1" PermissionSetName="FullTrust" Name="LiMeDASDataProviderCodeGroup" Description="Grants permission to the LiMeDAS data processing extension for reporting services.">
<IMembershipCondition class="UrlMembershipCondition" version="1" Url="C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS11.LIMEDAS\Reporting Services\ReportServer\bin\Limedas.Data.Provider.dll"
/>
</CodeGroup>
We have the data extension set up perfectly for the designer, because I can see it as a type of connection and the preview works in the designer.
But, for some reason it does not work in the server. They were set up the same way, but the server will not work. From the report manager page, when we try to add a data source, the only type option is Sql Server, none of the other extensions mentioned in
the config file. Does anyone know what else could cause this issue?Hi Justin,
According to the error message and the issue can be caused by the edition of your SSRS is not support for the custom data provider. For example the express edition have limitation support on this:
Features Supported by the Editions of SQL Server 2012 .
If your edition is the supportted edition and the issue can be caused by the custom data provider do not necessarily support all the functionality supplied by Reporting Services data processing extensions. In addition, some OLE DB data providers and ODBC
drivers can be used to author and preview reports, but are not designed to support reports published on a report server. For example, the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Jet is not supported on the report server. For more information, see
Data Processing Extensions and .NET Framework Data Providers (SSRS).
If you are running on a 32-bit platform, the data provider must be compiled for a 32-bit platform. If you are running on a 64-bit platform, the data provider must be compiled for the 64-bit platform. You cannot use a 32-bit data provider wrapped with 64-bit
interfaces on a 64 bit platform.
More details information:Data Sources Supported by Reporting Services (SSRS)
Similar thread for your reference:

How to connect from InformixDB to SQL Server 2012 (and copy data)
Hello guys
I try to build a connection from an Informix (Informix2000) database to my SQL Server 2012.
I really dont know how to do this...
The plan is to build a job in the night in which data is beeing copied from the InformixDB to my SQL Server 2012
The SQL server should be like a "archive server" (same data as informix DB , but the data should stay for 2 years)
Any idea if this is possible ? (what im trying to do)
Can i do this with ODBC Connection ?
Thanks a lot and Regards, DominicThanks a lot guys... but what im trying to do is not to migrate the hole Informix DB to SQL 2012, i just want to copy some data into my SQL Server (archive). in the informix DB the data is only 30days back... i want to transfer every week
the data and let it on the SQL Server 2 years back. (SQL Server should be like an archive system)
Hello ,
Then you need to create an SSIS package to migrate data from Informix to SQL Server 2008 since Informix is old I dont know which connection provider to use but you can try ADO.NET connection provider
Can you check below link
