Multi-Table Foreign Key

Hi all
I am using oracle 9i, is it possible to create foreign key that referenced by more than one table, for example if I have such field I want the value for this field be referenced by values exist in either Table X or Table Y.

Hi,
If I understood your question, and if you want that a value in one table should exist in both tables X and Y, then this is possible.
SQL> create table x (id number constraint pk_x primary key);
Table created.
SQL> create table z (id number constraint pk_z primary key);
Table created.
SQL> create table a (id number);
Table created.
SQL> alter table a add constraint fk_a_x foreign key (id) references x;
Table altered.
SQL> alter table a add constraint fk_a_z foreign key (id) references z;
Table altered.
SQL> insert into x values (1);
1 row created.
SQL> insert into z values (1);
1 row created.
SQL> insert into a values (1);
1 row created.
SQL> delete from x;
delete from x
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-02292: integrity constraint (A.FK_A_X) violated - child record found
SQL> delete from z;
delete from z
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-02292: integrity constraint (A.FK_A_Z) violated - child record found
SQL> insert into x values (2);
1 row created.
SQL> insert into a values (2);
insert into a values (2)
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-02291: integrity constraint (A.FK_A_Z) violated - parent key not found
SQL> insert into z values (2);
1 row created.
SQL> insert into a values (2);
1 row created.Cheers

  • How to alter or add foreign key constr to table having child rows or data

    Hi,
    I have a table by name DEPT in which the column DEPTNO is a primary key column and have data in it for all the columns . Now I have a EMP table where in the column DEPTNO is not having any constraint including foreign key constraint too. Now i have data in the EMP table for all the columns . now i would like to add the foreign key constraint to DEPTNO column in the EMP table referencing the DEPTNO column in the DEPT table. Both the table do not have any null values .
    I need to add the foreign key without deleting the data in the EMP table.
    Please advice.
    Regards,
    Vinesh

    Hi,
    I need to add the foreign key without deleting the data in the EMP table.Foreign key constraint can have only those values which are present in the primary key of the parent table or null.
    When your tables are populated with values and then you are adding the constraint then,
    the parent table data is only present in child table or null values.
    Example
    SQL> create table emp_bkp as select * from emp;
    Table created.
    SQL> create table dept_bkp as select * from dept;
    Table created.
    SQL> alter table dept_bkp
      2  add constraint pk_deptno primary key(deptno);
    Table altered.
    SQL> select distinct deptno from emp_bkp;
        DEPTNO
            30
            20
            40

    SQL> alter table emp_bkp

    I don't have intimate knowledge of SQL Server, but to me, your code seems reasonable. I guess there is some "fine point" (a bug?) to using self referenceing foreign keys in SQL Server. It doesn't seem plausible that the error originates with the driver, unless it's a very intelligent kind of driver.
    A "Gordian Knot" kind of solution to your problem is to ask whether you really need the foreign key constraint in the db schema. Is the table used by something other than your EJB? Anyway, putting logic responsible for the correct functioning of your EJB into the db schema is often a bad practice, as it makes the code harder to understand, maintain, port etc.

  • Use of foreign key check in ABAP reports

    Hi,
    I'm trying to understand if it's possible to use a foreign key integrity check in an ABAP reports. I have understood that this kind of check is deactivated for performance reasons, is it right?
    In this case I'd like to know if it is possible to activate the foreign key check "on demand", or just for a particular table.
    As an example, I'd like to use the foreign key defined on attribute AKONT of table KNB1, that points on the related attribute of table SKB1.
    Thanks,
    Gabriele

    Welcome on SCN!
    I'm trying to understand if it's possible to use a foreign key integrity check in an ABAP reports. I have understood that this kind of check is deactivated for performance reasons, is it right?
    Most likely yes. Integrity is turned OFF for Open SQL statements but is turned ON for screen fields.
    If you just create screen parameter like
    parameters pa_akont type knb1-akont.
    ...then input help for that field will be automatically provided. This means that you will not be able to pick or enter value different that this allowed from SKB1 table (foreign key relationship will be checked).
    You can explicitly assign different input help or search help for certain screen field independently of type it is refering i.e by means of fm F4IF_FIELD_VALUE_REQUEST .
    This however still relates only to screen fields, not fields used directly in ABAP statement.

    I'm no database expert and new to Oracle (R&D stage of SQL Server to Oracle migration). So can some body tell me/point me at docs that explains what's going on here with the table names.
    Thanks

    Hopefully someone from oracle will see this and log it as a bug. If that doesn't happen and you have a support license, you can open up a ticket with them directly.
    As an aside.. if you are daring enough, the template for that is stored in one of the jars in an xml file. You can always edit it and add the quotes. Or..and you don't want to hear this.. you may want to rename everything to uppercase. It would hurt now, but could end up saving you time down the road. (adding quotes to every query is a pain)

  • Foreign key constraint on multi-column primary key accepts 1 empty column!?

    Hi, we have a reference table with a two-column primary key. In the child table there is a non-mandatory foreign key constraint to this table. So if both child columns are null it's ok too. But now we see that if one of the two child table columns that build up the foreign key is null, the other column can have any (non-existant in the master-tabel) value you like!? That does not make sense.
    Can anyone explain this to me???
    Regards, Paul.

    Paul, I believe that this is in accordance to the ANSI SQL standard requirement for the treatment of nulls in a multi-column FK. In any case Oracle specifically states this is the way FK work From the 10 Concepts manual, Ch 21 Data Integrity, topic Nulls and Foreign Keys:
    The relational model permits the value of foreign keys either to match the referenced primary or unique key value, or be null. If any column of a composite foreign key is null, then the non-null portions of the key do not have to match any corresponding portion of a parent key. <<HTH -- Mark D Powell --

  • Question on indexing foreign key for replicated table

    Hi everybody,
    I have 2 tables with following script
    create table
    parent(parent_id number(2) not null,
    parent_name varchar(20),
    constraint parent_pk primary key(parent_id))
    create table child(child_id number(2) not null,
    parent_id number(2) not null,
    child_name varchar2(20),
    constraint pk_child primary key(child_id,parent_id),
    constraint fk_child foreign key (parent_id) references parenr(parent_id)
    I want to replicate them and I know to replicate these 2 tables i should add them to my replication group, my question is that the child_id has foreign key so as below link says
    http://dbataj.blogspot.com/2007/11/advance-replication-part-ii-master.html
    I should put an index on the foreign key.What type of index should it be and is the following script correct for my purpose?
    CREATE BITMAP
    INDEX "fk_child"
    ON child ("PARENT_ID")
    TABLESPACE "USERS"
    I would appreciate your help in advance.
    Mery

    A bitmap index is almost certainly not the sort of index you'd want to create. You would normally want just a normal index, i.e.
    CREATE INDEX fk_child
      ON child( parent_id )on the master database just to support normal DML operations (otherwise, deleting a row from the parent table requires doing a full table scan on the child table to see if there are any orphaned child records).
    If you are trying to set up a multi-master replication environment, you would also need to replicate this index, since you'll want to support basic DML on both nodes.

  • Binding for table produces list for other tables using foreign key and crea

    Using
    software Jdev 11G, WLS 11G, Oracle DB 11G, Windows Vista platform
    technology EJB 3.0, jspx, backing beans, session bean
    I cannot create a namedquery on my secondary table. The method for the column uses the entity object rather than the name and value of the column.
    For instance,
    (Coketruck) table has inventory records(Products) table
    Coketruck has one to many to the Products table
    Products has a many to one to the Coketruck
    I need to return the products from the product table based on the CokeTruck but I cannot create a namedQuery because the method in the Product table is an entity object type instead of a long that I can use to look up all the products based off the column truck_id.
    This is what I was expecting…
    Private Long truckId;
    public Long getTruckId() {
    return truckId;
    public void setTruckId (Long truckId) {
    this. truckId = truckId;
    Instead this is what I have…
    @ManyToOne
    @JoinColumn(name = "TRUCK_ID")
    private Coketruck coketruck;
    this. coketruck = coketruck
    public Coketruck getCoketruck() {
    return coketruck;
    public void set Coketruck (Coketruck coketruck) {
    this. coketruck = coketruck;
    How do I do a query on the Product table to return all the products that are in the coketruck?
    If I do the following it expects for me to pass the Entity Object which I cannot use as search criteria for my find method.
    @NamedQuery(name = "Products.findById", query = "select o from Products o where o.truckId = :truckId")
    On a different note but the same song…
    I noticed that when I look at my Session Bean Data Contols that the coketruck already has a list of the products. I have created a jsp page with a backing bean and have been able to use the namedquery on the coketruck entity to retrieve the productList. Unfortunately I need to sort the products by type and was also not able to find where to perform the work to be able to iterate through the productList to get my desired display. Therefore I started looking at doing another namedquery that would only retrieve the product_type ordering by the truckId.
    Seems I have come full circle… I don’t care what method I have to use to get the info back.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi!
    I work on an application wich uses a shopping cart stored in a database. The shopping cart uses two tables:
    CART: Holds information common for one shopping cart: the user it is connected to etc.
    - Primary key: CART_ID
    CART_ROW: One row in the cart, e.g. one new product to buy.
    - Primary key: ROW_ID
    - Foreign key: CART_ROW.CART_ID references CART.CART_ID
    From the code the rows in the cart are collected per cart, as is modelled by the foreign key. There exists one more relationship, which we use in the code, but which is not modelled by a foreign key in the database. One row can be dependent on another row, which makes the other row a parent.
    CART_ROW has a column PARENT_ID which references CART_ROW.ROW_ID.
    Should we add a foreign key for PARENT_ID? Or are there any questions to consider when it is a foreign key to the same table?
    I suggest to add foreign key it wont harm the performance (except while on insert when there would be validation for the foreign key). But it would prevent users to insert wrong/corrupt data either through code or directly by loggin in the database.
    A while ago we added indexes, both on ROW_ID and on PARENT_ID. Could the index on PARENT_ID have been harmful, since there is no foreign key?
    Index on parent_id would only be harmful if you do not make use of index after creating it (i.e. there is no query which make use of this index).
    And if you decide to have a foreign key on parent_id then I suggest to have index too on parent_id as it would be helpful atleast when you delete any record in this table.
    Best regards!

  • How to create a foreign key for the table from two different tables?

    Hi All,

The same SAMPLE_CONS3_CHECK table also having the primary key for NAME column and forieign key for SAMPLE_CONS_CHECK and SAMPLE_CONS2_CHECK tables. See the below code 2

    CONSTRAINT SAMPLE_CONS3_CHECK_FK2 FOREIGN KEY
         NAME
    ) REFERENCES SAMPLE_CONS2_CHECK
        NAME
    ) ON DELETE CASCADE;From the above schenario i am able to insert the data to SAMPLE_CONS3_CHECK table. But the parent data is already available in the parent table. The problem is here two different constarints from two different tables. While inserting, it is checking from both the tables whether the parent is exist or not.
    How can i solve this problem? Can anyone halp me about this?
    Thanks

    Actually the design is completely incorrect.
    What you say is
    I have
    'foo', 'foo series'
    'foo','foo model'
    'foo',666
    By virtue of table3 referring to both table1 and table2.
    This means you actually need to have 1 (one) table:
    'foo','foo series','foo model', 666
    And the 'problem' disappears.

    I have started working on ADF and can anybody inform me in ADF how can i insert data in multiple table if they have foreign key,please?
    Thnak you very much.

    Hello,
    Still no luck.I am surely doing silly mistakes.Anyway,Here are my workings-
    1> student_mst (id(pk),studentname) and student_guard_mst(id(fk),guardianname)
    2> created EO from both of the tables,made id in both EO as DBSequence and an association was also generated.
    3> i made that association composite by clicking the checkbox
    4> i created 2 VO from 2 EO.
    5> put those VO in Application Module.
    6> dragged and dropped 2 VO on my jspx page and dropped them as ADF Form.
    Now what to do please?

  • Using one user account table across multiple databases but account used as a foreign key

    the right way of going about it? Do I have to create a user account table in all my databases? What is the best practice to handle this problem? Thanks in advance.

    You can use Triggers or using replication.

    CONSTRAINT FKUMCONSUMO FOREIGN KEY(IDUMCONSUMOPROM) REFERENCES UNIDADMEDIDA(IDUNIDADMEDIDA),
    CONSTRAINT FKUMCONSTOT FOREIGN KEY(IDUMCONSUMOTOT) REFERENCES UNIDADMEDIDA(IDUNIDADMEDIDA)
    The columns IDUMRECORRIDO, IDUMCONSUMOPROM and IDUMCONSUMOTOT depend on the table UNIDADMEDIDA (specifically from the IDUNIDADMEDIDA field). I need to bring back the description (DESCRIPCION field) from the different values stored in TRANSPORTE table.
    Thanks for your help!!!

    Welcome to the forum!
    Have you thought about joining against the parent table three times to pick up each different description?
    SELECT  <COLUMN LIST>
    ,       UNI_A.DESCRIPCION
    ,       UNI_B.DESCRIPCION
    ,       UNI_C.DESCRIPCION
    FROM    TRANSPORTE
    JOIN    UNIDADMEDIDA    UNI_A   ON UNI_A.IDUNIDADMEDIDA = TRANPORTE.IDUMRECORRIDO
    JOIN    UNIDADMEDIDA    UNI_B   ON UNI_B.IDUNIDADMEDIDA = TRANPORTE.IDUMCONSUMOPROM
    JOIN    UNIDADMEDIDA    UNI_C   ON UNI_C.IDUNIDADMEDIDA = TRANPORTE.IDUMCONSUMOTOT
    ;It is always helpful to provide the following:
    1. Oracle version (SELECT * FROM V$VERSION)
    2. Sample data in the form of CREATE / INSERT statements.
    3. Expected output
    4. Explanation of expected output (A.K.A. "business logic")
    5. Use \ tags for #2 and #3. See FAQ (Link on top right side) for details.
    You provided #2 partially. If you provide the rest we may be able to help you even further.

  • How to create a Foreign key relationship between 2 user defined tables...

    Hi Folks,
    I have created two user defined tables... Where in i want to create foriegn key relationship between the 2 tables.... Can anyone guide the step by step procedure to do this scenario...
    Any help would be highly appreciated...
    Thanks

    Hi
    1.  In the 2nd table call the field of the 1st table which is a primary key.
    2.  Give the same field and dataelement name.
    3.  Select that field and then click on the foreign key field icon which is beside Search Help button.
    4. Then give short text, and the 1st table name.
    5. Then in the below box give the 2nd table name and 2nd table field name which you have called from 1st table.
    6. Then click on copy, then u will be able to see Check table name and check table field name beside foreign key table name.
    7. Then again click on copy.
    Regards
    Haritha.

  • Maintenance View for custom table with foreign key relationship

    Hi Folks,
         I have created a custom table with foreign key relationship with other check tables. I want to create a maintenance view / tablemaintenance generator. What all things I need to take care for the foreign keys related fields while creating the maintenance view / tablemaintenance generator.
    Regards,
      santosh

    Hi,
    You do not have to do anything explicitely for the foreign key relationships in the table maintainance generator.
    Create the table maintainance generator via SE11 and it will take care of all teh foreign key checks by itself.
