Multiple application instances and inter process communication.

Hi,
I am looking at having a main application instance spawn individual application instances. But when launching another instance I need to message the main application so it can spawn a window.
How do I go about communicating between application instances in order to do this ?
Many thanks in advance,
Aaron

RMI is your best bet - or, if the IPC is pretty simple, then you could just open a simple socket listener in the primary app...

  • Single SOA Suite Install with multiple oc4j instances and java processes

We right now have 5 BPEL processes and 5 ESB processes all running under one java.exe process. We would like to seperate some of
them out into their own java.exe processes without having to install more
%ORACLE_HOME% instances of SOA Suite. I can create an oc4j instance but of
course it doesn't have any SOA Suite stuff deployed to it. I tried to see what
the install would do with this new oc4j instance but it wants to create a new
%ORACLE_HOME% with an entire installation of SOA Suite.
Is there some sort of way to clone oc4j instances that have SOA Suite deployed to them so that you
    don't need multiple %ORACLE_HOME% instances?
    ### How is this Issue Impacting Your Business ###
We really don't want to have a lot of %ORACLE_HOME% instances to have to maintain. We are
migrating projects over from our current integration server product and we'll
have potentially dozens more BPEL and ESB projects. We definitely want to
group and isolate projects so that outages of one project do not bring down
    others that are unrelated.
We are currently experiencing periodic problems with one BPEL project that requires recycling but all the other BPEL and ESB
projects get recycled also. If we could put this project into it's own java
process without creating another SOA SUITE instance, it would be a big
    help.
    ANSWER
    =======
You can create multiple domains in BPEL or create multiple systems/groups in ESB to group different projects.
    MY REPLY:
    =========
We have been using systems/groups in ESB but they all run under the save java.exe process. I would assume that having a seperate domain in BPEL would also run in that same java.exe process.
Right now, the one BPEL project we have a problem with will gobble up all the JDBC connections from time to time and that requires a recycle of SOA Suite, which means all BPEL and ESB projects that run in that java.exe process get recycled also. We're working that issue in a different ticket.
It would be nice if the SOA Suite installation would install against a new oc4j instance and not assume it has to create a complete %ORACLE_HOME% instance. The components of SOA Suite seem to be J2EE based components.
Scenario: I already have an oc4j instance called oc4j_soa and a complete %ORACLE_HOME% installation of soa suite. I then create a new oc4j instance from Enterprise Manager. Then I would deploy the esb-dt, esb-rt, orabpel, etc. components of SOA Suite to that new oc4j instance and modify the necessary config file so that it can work with OHS and the SOA Suite Databases. Is this possible?
Does anyone have any experience with this or do people typically install multiple complete installation of SOA Suite with mulitple Oracle Homes?

    Hi,
yes, on metalink you get in touch with real experts....
You have to install serveral application servers to get different ORACLE_HOMEs.
For each one, you can install a BPEL PM.
But: For each BPEL PM you need your own database instance, or you have to configure them as a clustered BPEL installation.... (but i do not know if this work with non RAC DBs)

  • Application instances and events

If I'm streaming three related events such as football1, football2, football3 is it best practice to create a unique application instance for each football event?
Or should all 3 events just be grouped under a single application instance?
    Example: C:\FMS\applications\football1\_definst_\football1, C:\FMS\applications\football2\_definst_\football2, etc...
I was asking because the FMS Admin Console breaks down the connection information by application instance and then I could just pull it up and see how many users connected and total connects to each event without making a bunch of admin api calls.
    Does this make sense?

Should we require the users to install Java(FX) AND THEN WebFX AND THEN type the URL of our appp AND THEN it will deliver the app to them ? why ? WHY ?
    Hi,
I'm Bruno, the creator of the WebFX project.
About the questions above, I would say first that this is just a concept, but instead of thinking about the "browser", it could actually be used by real projects today that want to provide a JavaFX experience, without having to push big JARs for clients that might be in a very distant location with really poor connectivity. Also, it would make it even easier for the developer to update the application "on the fly", and his users would have access to the new version instantaneously.
Consider wrapping the "WebFX" concept in your "base" desktop application, and instead of using WebView to load parts of your app using HTML+JS, why not using a FXView (based on the WebFX concept) to render remote code?
Again, it's a concept, but I'm sure it can be really useful :-)
Hope I could clear all the questions!
    Thanks,

  • Multiple application instance on the same server instance

Can we have multiple instances of the same application on a single WLS?? For ex, can I have two app.ear files in different application directories??

    Hi Nilesh,
Can you please clarify your landscape as this will help in getting answers to your question.
In general adding instances (and/or server nodes) should be considered for increasing capacity rather than impoving performance. Specifcially, adding instances (and/or server nodes on the same host you risk a situation where the processes compete for resources which will have a negative effect on performance. If you do need to combine instances on the same host, make sure there is enough hardware (specifically memory in case of JAVA).
    Hope this helps,
    Best regards, Walter

  • Multiple JVM instances and host computer performance

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has any facts or sources about how running multiple JVM instances impacts the performance of the hosting computer ?
For example, say you have a long running server process that creates a JVM, how is the performance of the computer impacted if there are five of those processes running, versus ten versus ...
This is a very "it depends" question, but I would like to get an idea of the baseline performance impact that comes with running a JVM, and if there is anyone here that has experience running multiple JVMs I'd appreciate any feedback, whether it's "don't do it, ever" or "no problem!"
    Thanks

My only experience with multiple VMs is when I have several Java GUI apps (eclipse, jedit, dbvisualizer) plus tomcat and maybe an ant running on XP.
I don't think that the existence of multiple VMs is in and of itself a problems, but JVMs do tend to be fairly memory hungry, so if you don't have a lot of RAM, you may find yourself crawling along as swapping heats up.
I think that later versions of the Windows VM have started to take advantage of sharing certain core libraries, or pieces of them, so that you don't have as big an incremental memory footprint for additional VMs. I don't know which versions or how much this actually reduces the foot print of second and subsequent VMs though.

  • Multiple Server Instances and Schedulers

    Hi,
I am facing a huge problem with the schedulers.
I have multiple system ID's in my SAP portal.
Suppose i create a JAVA scheduler and export it (as PAR) in the portal, it shows up in the scheduler tasks but while scheduling it the problem is with the System ID. I have 9 instances of them. Rest of my schedulers runs on a particuler System ID but this one is not running there, insted when i checked i found its running over a different System ID.
I am completely unaware of this concept. Can anyone please explain or post any link regarding the same so that i can get an insight of the same.
    Thanks in Advance.

    Thanks Tushar,
I am not able to figure out on which system instance should I schedule my scheduler.
Previously I use to schedule it over a particular instance and it worked fine. But yesterday when I did the same it didn't worked, so i checked all the System ID's and found that it is working on two System ID's rathe than the one I used to normally schedule. So i am lost as to where should I schedule it in future for any other schedulers.
I am not able to figure out the concept of this multiple instance and its use. If you can refer to any document that might will be of great help to me.
    Thanks and Regads,
    Kunal.

  • Inter-process communication with VB6 application

I want to have my C# application communicate with VB6 application program.
The message to communicate is simple. Here is a scenario.
      VB6 APP                                            C# APP
    Run C# APP         "1", "2" or "3"
    Send command  ---------------->
Wait                                    Do work as the command
Exit from loop    <----------------        Return code
                                                           Terminate
I implemented this with Profile(ini file) but I want to do without file writing.
    Which way would be desirable?

If vb6 is using process.start ( or whatever the equivalent is )  to crank the c# application up then you could just use command line arguments to pass the variable in.
A simple way to pass data between processes is ms message queue.
You have a queue for each direction you want to send stuff.
You could use a mix of these.
Pass in args to the c# app then listen for messages on a queue and the c# app pushes the return code onto that queue.

  • Sharing VISA Resources With Multiple Application Instances

I have noticed a strange behavior when attempting to communicate with a
slow, single shared VISA resource (GPIB device) from multiple
    stand-alone LabView 5 applications.
Initially, I developed some code which first attempts to acquire
exclusive access to the device using VISA lock with a reasonably large
timeout. After the lock is acquired, the code performs its IO, then
    releases the lock.
I then wrote some wrapper code which basically tries to enter the (lock,
IO, unlock) code as fast as possible. I built a stand-alone application,
and ran 3 seperate instances. Basically, I could see that each
instance would eventually acquire a lock, perform its IO, and unlock.
However, some of the instances "starved" for access to the device,
enough so that the timeout was sometime reached (each IO would take
perhaps 2 seconds, and I set the lock timeout to say 10 seconds).
Ideally, each instance should receive the lock in the order by which the
lock was requested. It appears that VISA is doing something else.
I've verified that this issue also exists with "faster" GPIB devices
(say 200ms IO turnaround), but is less noticable because the
    communications are faster.
To get around this, I wrote another application which basically acts as
a resource server. Using VI server, each instance which wants access to
the resource sends a "lock" request to the server. Specifically, the
"client" calls a re-entrant "Interface" VI via VI Server. The
"interface" VI then adds the "lock" request to the queue, and then waits
for "Notification" from the server process. The server parses the
request queue, and when the resource is available, it sends a
notification to the appropriate "interface" VI. This whole time, the
client is waiting for the interface VI to return, just like when it's
waiting for a normal lock. When the client is done with the device, it
sends an "unlock" message to the interface VI. The server then gives
the resource to the next item in the queue.
To me, this is a bit kludgey. My solution requires that this "server"
application is running at all times, and it is a bit slower than the
usual manner. Has anyone come up with a better solution?
    Thanks,
    Andy

My answer depends how stand alone your applications are. I don't know what happens if you have several independant executable files but the simplest solution in the development environment is to have one vi that handles all send/receive requests to the instrument. In this way, without extra overhead, you guarantee single parts of each program access too your instrument. (don't make this vi reentrant naturally)
This approach has another advantage. You separate in a better way the instrument and your aplication, so changing to another instrument is easier to do.

  • Multiple Application Instances Accessing Same DAQ Device

I have a fairly straightforward application that reads from a wireless DAQ device (NI-9205 connected to NI WLS-9163).  I'd like to run multiple instances of the executable, but I get error -201105 (resource reserved) when the DAQmx task is started on the second instance.  Each instance is attempting to acquire from different channels from the same DAQ device.  Is this an issue with the DAQ device in particular, or with DAQmx in general?  Thanks.
    -Joe
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Joe,
Unfortunately you can only access one type of channel with each program.  For example you could have one program access AI and another use AO, but you cannot have two different programs access AI from the same card.  This is common among all of NI DAQ devices.

  • Synchronous and asynchronous processes communication in WLI 8.1

    Hi all,
I'm using workshop with WL 8.1 to design by business processes.
I have created one process which is invoked synchronously via a client request
    with return.
Than I call this process in web flow. The process publishes message in the MB,
    which creates
another process asynchronously. My question is how can I communicate
from the first process with the second one ? e.g. In some cases I need to wait
    when the second
process riches some state, or e.g. how to check if the everything’s went ok in
    the second one ?
I tried to manage it by another MB channel, but when I add the proper controls
    to first process
it becomes asynchronous and I can not use such process in the flow (there is no
    way to handle
callback methods in the flow) and I need to have return somehow.
Do you have any suggestion how to design (or redesign) my workflow ?
    Best regards

    Hi all,
I'm using workshop with WL 8.1 to design by business processes.
I have created one process which is invoked synchronously via a clientrequest
    with return.That's fine so far.
Than I call this process in web flow. The process publishes message in theMB,
    which creates
another process asynchronously. My question is how can I communicate
from the first process with the second one ? e.g. In some cases I need towait
    when the second
process riches some state, or e.g. how to check if the everything's wentok in
the second one ?Communicating between JPD processes is preferably done with Process Controls
(Add Control / Integration Control / Process). A Process control needs a jcx
file belonging to a process. To generate a Process Control jcx file to a
process, click right on the JPD file in the project tree, and select
    Generate Process Control.
If the page-flow calling on the first process also has to wait for the
second process to reach some state, then you need to have
synchronous invocation between the first and the second process.
That can be done only with adding a message path to the start node of the
second process (the circle), and putting a Client Request with Return in it.
Everything in the Client Request with Return node is invoked synchronously,
meaning that the first process will wait for the return, and gets the return
value, and receives any exceptions thrown and everything takes place in the
same transaction. However this way you have no modelling information on
where the process flow currently is, so you have to keep track of that in a
variable in the JPD, if you need to know that.
You also have to put at least one stateful (waiting) node to the normal
process flow, so that the process does not terminate right after starting
(Workshop warns about this as well).
Now regenerate the process control jcx for the second process, and you will
see a method on it belonging to the message path Client Request with Return.
This can be invoked synchronously on the process control in the first
    process.
I presume however, that you are aware of the fact, that the HTTP request can
time out, and in that case I am not sure, whether additional steps in the
page flow are evaluated or not. Possibly not. Typically I would expect, that
    forwards and includes do not.

    Robert Varga

  • Issue with multiple application installation and server share

    Hi,
    SCCM 2007 SP2 R3 ICP2
    All servers W2K8R2
I am having an issue with software installs.  When using a variable for multiple applciation installs, I get access errors when the applications go to install.  It appears to be a multiple connection issue, but I can't figure out why.
I am using server shares for my DPs.  The proper permissions are set.  The servers (DP) are W2K8R2.  I think it has to do with the way R2 handles the conenctions.  I want to know if this is a known issue or if anyone has come accross
    it.
I am going to post in the software distribution forum as well, but thought this would be a config question.

Hi! I'm waking up this dead thread but I've got a *very* similar problem!
I've got a SCCM 2007 SP2 R3 installation on Win2008.  All clients are in the same ConfigMgr-site. Multiple package deploy in the same site-boundary as the CM-server works excellent. (We've got  three DPs in the same site-boundary as the
    CM-server itself.)
Now, we have a new site-boundary with it's own Protected DP where multiple package deploy fails
but the same packages, being run from the task-sequnce works! So then the client can download, install and run the packages from the proteced DP just fine. All "single" packages install fine before the "Multiple Appliaction"-step.
I've tripple checked that we're running the same packages when we're installing Multiple Packages as we do in the Task-Sequence. And
the same Task-sequence with the Multiple Package installation step
works fine in our site-boundary where the ConfigMgr-server is installed.

I know that the TS checks package dependencies before executing the TS. That's not possible with Multiple packages since they are variable dependant. I think this is somehow related although it doesn't explain why my client can't authenticate properly.

  • Running multiple vi instances and datasockets

    Hi,
I have an application that may need several instances of one VI running. I am using Datasockets to transfer data and control other VIs. Is there a way to differentiate the same datasockets running on the different instances of the same VI?
    Thanks,
    Michael

    Good Afternoon Michael,
Datasockets are simply sending data using the TCP/IP protocol; your packets are just data sent out from a port.  As such, there is no default method to determine from which program/VI/instance of the same VI data was sent.
You can incorporate some kind of tag with your data which identifies the source of the data and simply parse that information out on the receiving end.  An easy way to identify different instances of a sub-VI is to include an additional control on the VI and its connector pane.  In this case, each instance of the VI will have a special identifier which can be passed along with the data to send.

  • Threaded VI, Threaded Sequence inter process communication best practice

I'm curious if others have any advice on best practice for the following.
We have VIs that run continuously during our test execution sampling 4 different Analog Input boards in continous mode.  For quite awhile these VIs were passed the SequenceContext from the TS side along with the name of FileGlobals.  When the while loops had new samples from the boards it would use the SequenceContext to set them from the VI.  It would also use the SequenceContext to get "signals" from test stand.  That is, I'd set a variable on the TestStand side that would be read in the VI to make it behave differently (filtering, moving average, etc).  I used TS notifiers from the LV side to let TS know new data was available and there are TS rendezvous's used to partially synchronize the 4 seperate boards with each other.
We never really had any trouble with this and even though the code wasn't terribly complicated for me, others on the team have had a little trouble comprehending it.
Recently, we ran into some issues not related to this code but ultimately in an attempt to solve them I ended up re-writing this code to use functional globals.  Now, the VI uses the FGs to set the data and on the TestStand side the same FGs are used for reading.  Locking of data is handled by the non-rentrant VIs.  The FGs are also structured state machine-like for signaling the VI to do something and letting TS know something has happened.
This code seems to work well also and I think my team (and anyone that follows) will be able to follow this code a little bit easier.
I'm not classically trained so I suspect there may be standard patterns that work here, I just haven't sought them out.
Is there a better way to do this that I'm not thinking of?

    Hi SmokeMonster,
If things are looking more legible and everything functioning as desired it sounds like the improvements are going to be some of the best for your company. Without more specific information about seeing how information is being passed and handled, and a greater knowledge of the system and desired results, specific recommendations are going to be more difficult.
From a higher level overview, the best resources you will find on development practices will be the NI TestStand Materials. A few that may be worth a look specific to your inquiry would be the following:

  • Inter-Process communication

I was looking for alternative to message queue for passing messages because I'm hitting the maximum message size limit.
what are my other options and what would be the pros and cons. the code is in C/C++. Thanks.

Since you don't mention what OS you are using, or which message-passing scheme, it's hard to provide any advice.
If you are using Solaris, you are more likely to find a helpful answer in a Solaris programming forum:
    http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/index.jspa
As to C versus C++, I don't think the pros and cons are different for message passing than for most other kinds of programming. The C interfaces can be used just as easily in C++.
Personally, I prefer programming in C++ because of better type safety and economy of expression, and because it is easier to write efficient yet maintainable code. But other considerations might make C a better choice for a specific project. For example, if this one module would the only C++ code in the application, you probably would want to stay with C.

  • Multiple Portal Instances and Cookie Names

i have three portal instances (3.0.7) under the same database 8.1.7 on NT.
    for example:
    portal30 + portal30_sso
    myportal + myportal_sso
    testportal + testportal_sso
actually i cannot work on more than one portal at the same time. so, each time i want to work under a particular portal i make sure i am not logged in the other two.
if i assign a different COOKIE NAME in the
GATEWAY for each DAD it will fix my problem?
    any suggestion?
    tks!!

i will appreciate some answer to this posting.
