Mac OS X Mountain Lion supports multitasking like cbs20 mentioned. Just like MS Windows just press alt+tab to switch to whatever applications you have open.
Actually it isn't Alt-Tab on OS X, it's Command-Tab to use the Application Switcher.
Also, Control+ left/right arrow key will switch spaces if that's what's desired.

how do I prevent multiple applications opening on start up with Lion?

It's the Resume feature of Lion:
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.

  • Working with multiple applications open

I was wondering if having multiple applications open has a negative effect on the speed of my RAM. Someone told me that it's actually a good thing to have more than one open at a time in OS X. Could that be true?
I'm interested because I only have 256 MB and I use Photoshop CS (a real memory hog) a lot for manipulating big images. I'm also online pretty much all the time.
    Thank you.
    Allan

Yeah, I think I see those beach balls in my sleep! Thanks Littleshoulders for the link. It's really helpful. I think I'll buy that ebook when I can. The other link on my previous post that led somewhere on this site helped a lot, too. The more I learn, the better.
So I guess that's a fallacy that it's good to have many apps open at a time, especially Photoshop and the huge images I work with. You know, I'm sure I read that in a book about using OS X. I don't see how there would be a benefit to have multiple apps open.
I think RAM will be my next purchase, followed, of course, by a newer, more powerful Mac.

  • How to keep multiple applications open in one screen?

I'd like to have several applications open at the same time, for example iTunes, Safari and Mail. But when I start a new program the one I was working in disappears from the screen.... How can I keep them resized on the screen....? Thanks for your help...

When you start a new program, do the others disappear into the background (i.e. minimize)
If so, you have somehow gotten the system into Single-app mode. This reacts as if you held down the option key when starting the new app.
You can check to see what is set with this commanddefaults read com.apple.dock single-appIf you get "The domain/default pair of (com.apple.dock, single-app) does not exist" then something else is wrong, but I don't know what it is.
If you get a 1 returned (or yes or true), then you can disable it with this:defaults delete com.apple.dock single-app
    or
    defaults write com.apple.dock single-app 0

  • Encrypted "Application Support" cause crashes

I am not sure if this is a question that can be addressed, but please bear with me as I try to explain what I discovered today.
For years (since Leopard), I have done this setup with my Mac:
    1. Create an encrypted disk image using Disk Utility (AES128 or 256)
    2. Mount the encrypted disk image (/Volume/Encrypted)
    3. Move the folder ~/Library/Application Support/ to the encrypted volume
    4. Create a symbolic link: ln -s ~/Library/Application\ Support  /Volume/Encrypted/Application\ Support
And prior to Mavericks, I was able to setup this disk image to be auto mounted after boot (though I still do not save the password to key chain, for additional privacy/security reasons).
The reason I did this was an attempt to protect my privacy, without knowing exactly what is stored in the ~/Library/Application Support folder. From casucally poking around, it seems to be where most applications store its settings and data, so I thought this was a good things to do in case someone stole my laptop, at least some of my privacy is guarded. And I have never had any issues with it in all previous versions of Mac OSX.
Until I bought a new laptop that came with Mavericks. One of the first things I did of course was to do my little setup, setup the encrypted disk image, and create the symbolic link.
And then, I started experiencing all kinds of weirdness. I first noticed it when I tried to open some Pages documents that I had created earlier using an older version of iWorks. Pages, Keynote, and Numbers would very consistently hang (and eventually crash, or require me to force quit it), whenever I try to make it open an older document. I found this bizarre, and for a while I blamed it on the new version of iWorks suite thinking that it's gone the Microsoft route of not providing backwards compatibility. And then, I opened QuickTime to do some quick editing of a video (flip it vertically), and when I tried to save it, QuickTime would have the same behavior like the iWorks applications, and eventually requiring me to force quit it.
For almost a month I fought with this, and having never used Mavericks until the new laptop, I just thought these were issues in Mavericks or the new verison of iWorks. It never occured to me that my symbolic link setup would interfere. Unilt today. I took this in to the Apple Store, in hope to get some help from the Genius Bar folks. The person who helped me was very knowledgeable, and after some troubleshooting, he was a little confused by my seemingly mising "Application Support" folder (since in Finder symlinks don't show up as a link), for the sake of troubleshooting, I removed the symlink, copied everything from the encrypted disk back (so now everything is stored on disk unencrypted). And viola! That solved all of my app-crashing problems.
Now, I am curious... my understanding of mounting an encrypted disk tells me what I did *should* not have caused an issue (and it hasn't for the last 5+ years). Why would this be an issue in Mavericks? And further more, do the good people on this forum have any suggestion for me to have some level of protection (encryption) for my personal settings, that will work in Mavericks?
    Thank you.

    Try FileVault instead.

  • IOS Signature Settings for Multiple Email Accounts causes crashes and errors

    Hello Everyone,
I've been having troubles with iOS email signature for severals years from iOS 4 (?) through iOS 7 on everything ranging from an iPad2, iPad3, IPad Air, and various iPhones.  I'm currently on an iPad Air 128GB WiFi running iOS 7.1.2.
I have about 12 email accounts. I have it set to a unique signature per account. Whenever I try to scroll the list of signatures in the settings app, it will often have greyed out areas where a signature is supposed to be (especially after adding a new account). Other accounts will blur together and overlap each other. Very often the whole settings app crashes. Once the crashes start, they happen more frequently and you basically have to Power Off and Restart the iPad to get it back to a somewhat stable state.
I've come to accept that the Mail Signatures is broken and not stable. But maybe I'm just doing it wrong. So, I ask you great and wonderful Apple Community: Any suggestions? Or just keep on like I've been doing for the last several years?
    Thank you!
    Paul Holje

this crash has been present since ios6 (apparently). it's apparently caused by a buffer overflow (i've not yet examined the crash files i've been generating) because the engineers never tested use cases such as yours or mine.
a painful workaround is to disable all your email accounts but one, edit its signature, then disable it, and enable the next one, and so on. ios saves the correct signature for each account and the settings app crash does not occur.
    hope this helps

  • Multiple browsers open causes authentication or session problems

    Hi Folks,
I have a strange problem. It's strange to me in any case as I'm primarily a back-end guy so I am not an expert on some of the web features of APEX. I have built an application that accesses many remote databases through database links. I open 4 instances of IE6, each is handed a seperate session id as can be seen in the url. The user provides the db name, user and password in the login page. I authenticate by creating a custom auth procedure which creates a temporary database link to test whether the user and password provided is correct for the chosen database. If correct, I authenticate. With 4 instances, this all works fine. Then I'm redirected to the first page in my application which runs a query against the remote database selected at login. ( table@db_link). If I hit the button to submit the query on the 4 browsers, the 4th one reverts me to the login page as if I am not authenticated. This does not seem to happen if I open 4 browsers on 4 different computers all accessing the APEX application.
Has anyone experienced similar issues or does anyone know if there is some limit on how many sessions from the one computer can be handled. I thought initially that it might have been an issue with some spfile parameters but I'm thinking now that it must be either how APEX handles requests from the same machine or some network/http issue? As I said, when it come to http sessions etc, I am no guru!!
    Thanks for any help!

Sounds like those browser windows are using the same OS process. Did you start them with CTRL-N ? Try starting them from the Start menu. If they aren't using separate processes they'll share cookies and that would result in the kinds of things you described.

  • Bug: Multiple Files Open ACR Crashes Photoshop...

I have several small files (500 pixels wide) and ACR crashes Photoshop (three times in last hour) when I make small moves with the sliders Exposure/Blacks/mids.
I don't seem to have this problem when I don't keep several open files.

  • When I'm using Safari, acasionally the menu bar just disappears. I'm running the latest version of Lion and the latest version of Safari. This is not a full screen app problem. I have multiple windows open. This happens all the time! Firefox is fine! ???

When I'm using Safari, ocasionally the menu bar just disappears. I'm running the latest version of Lion and the latest version of Safari. This is not a full screen app problem. I have multiple windows open. This happens all the time! Firefox is fine! What the ****? Please help!

Right, like I'm trying to say, THERE IS NO SAFARI MENU bar. Example: I have multiple applications open, I click on a Photoshop window, the correct menu or title bar or whatever changes. Every other application window I click on brings up the correct "whatever" bar. If I click on the desktop, the "Finder Bar" shows up.
Everythiing else, BUT SAFARI, works the same way since OS X came out.  This is ridiculous.
I'm getting the vibe that Apple is trying to get rid of the finder.... this is the way wrong direction.

  • I want Firefox to open to my homepage every time after it crashes. I do not want it to return to the tabs and applications that caused the crash. I am willing to lose information. How do I do this?

Firefox crashes or seizes up when there are too many tabs and applications open, and causes my computer to crash or seize up. I use task manager to close Firefox or I restart my computer. Then, when Firefox restarts again, it automatically re-opens all the tabs and applications that caused the computer to seize or crash in first place. This is a waste of my time. I want Firefox to reopen to my homepage even if it crashes. I am willing to lose information to have Firefox reopen to a low-memory homepage. How do I do this?

Set the Integer pref browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes to 0 on the about:config page to get the about:sessionrestore page immediately with the first restart after a crash has occurred or the Task Manager was used to close Firefox.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes
That will allow you to deselect the tab(s) that you do not want to reopen, but will allow to reopen other tabs.
    See:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Session_Restore#Restoring_a_session_after_a_crash
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes
    See also:
    * https://wiki.mozilla.org/Session_Restore#Preferences
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
*Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
*Preferences that have been modified show as bold (user set).
*Preferences can be reset to the default via the right-click context menu if they are user set
*Preferences can be changed via the right-click context menu: Modify (String or Integer) or Toggle (Boolean)

  • Problems with multiple applications crashing or not opening.

My computer has issues with multiple applications, which mostly are connected to itunes/ilife. iPhoto, iWeb, Front Row and iTunes all crash at certain points, but iMovie opens fine, although I haven't tested anything within it other than playback. YouControlTunes (an iTunes controller) also has issues. Reinstalling the OS has made no difference, nor has reinstalling iTunes. I will try reinstalling iLife (again).
iTunes did work after reinstalling the OS the first time after trashing iTunes and iLife and other applications that used up hard drive space (was running low so wanted to make sure Mac OS X installed fine), but after reinstalling iLife and Firefox and other applications then iTunes stopped working again. Garageband and iDVD weren't reinstalled.
I shall try trashing the iTunes library.
Also, the application Mactracker and the installers for 1.0.4 & 1.0.5 of Age of Empires III did not work, so the problem is presumably not iLife.

There are some simple troubleshooting steps you can take.
Be sure you drive is not overly full. Rule of thumb would be over 85%.
Create a new User go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" (make it an admin acct) and test the apps in this new account, if they work the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.
If the issue is limited to your user account try starting up Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
If your apps functions correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
If the issue is systemwide then, you may be able to repair this with the The 10.6.3 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • How to stop tabs re-opening after firefox crashes.........when it crashes and I have multiple tabs open, when re-starting firefox all of the tabs re-open too. How can I stop this?

Firefox crashes quite often, especially when I have multi tabs open. I usually have to use CTRL ALT DEL and end the process as Firefox stops responding.
My problem is not the crashing........it is the re-opening of the multiple tabs I had open, when normally it is one of them (not the home page) that caused the crash in the first place, so I cannot re-open firefox until I restart the pc, because every time I do it is the same story. Firefox tries to re-open all of the tabs and stops responding. I have looked in options but nowhere does it allow me to stop multiple tabs opening after a crash. If this continues, I will have to uninstall Firefox and stick to Chrome.

Set the pref browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes to 0 on the about:config page to get the about:sessionrestore page immediately with the first restart after a crash has occurred or the Task Manager was used to close Firefox.

  • Multiple applications are crashing when I click on EDIT

This is a weird one, just started this week. I'm on OS 10.9.5.
Whenever I click on the EDIT tab in the toolbar in *multiple* applications: InDesign, Photoshop, MS Word, iTunes, Chrome, the application crashes. Firefox doesn't seem to be effected.
The only activity immediately preceding the issue were 2 software updates to MEMORY CLEAN app which I've since deleted and to Pro Video Formats which I don't *think* I can un-install.
    Any ideas? Thx

  • Multiple Applications Crashing on Startup, possibly Safari related

    Hello All,
Sorry the title is a bit vague. When I got into work this morning I was unable to open Safari and Mail. On further investigation NetNewsWire and FontExplorer X also crash, it seems to be any application that uses a Safari window (WebKit?) to render content (NetNewsWire for feeds, FontExplorer X for the online store).
Mail opens but no windows are displayed, all the others crash with "The application quit unexpectedly".
I can provide crash reports if you think they will be useful.
Things I have tried, but haven't helped:
    - creating a test user account and trying the apps there, no luck they still crash
    - reinstalling Safari from the Leopard disk using Pacifist
    - removing all Safari .plist files, Cache etc
Thanks for any help in advance, I'm at a lost end now.
    Andy

    Hi Andy
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Multiple-application crashing usually points to either corruption in the Hard Drive directory, or perhaps equipment problems such as RAM.
Let's look at the software side first. To check for possible directory problems open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. Single-click your HD on the left, on the right the First-Aid panel will open. Lower right you'll see "verify disk". Select it. After a few minutes, you'll know if your HD is OK or has errors. If errors are present, you'll need to correct them via your Leopard Installer Disc, which requires your starting up from the Installer Disk.
To do so, insert the DVD into the computer. After it loads, restart the system. When the screen goes dark, hold down the C key. Once the grey Apple screen appears you can let go of the C key.
When the DVD is fully loaded, select Disk Utility in the Utility menu. A window will open showing your HD on the left. Single click on your HD, then select "repair disk" in the lower right of the screen (First Aid Panel). If errors appear during the "repair", rerun the utility until you get a clean pass. Then quit the Utility and Installer, letting the computer restart.
