Multiple database versions in a server

Hi all,
to day i have seen the file cat /etc/oratab like
db1:/u01/app/oracle/product/8.x.x.x/db_1:Y
db2:/u01/app/oracle/product/9.x.x.x/db_1:N
db3:/u01/app/oracle/product/10.x.x.x/db_1:Y
db4:/u01/app/oracle/product/8.x.x.x/db_1:N
here my doubts is how we can install multiple oracle versions in a single server. a server will be having only one version of operating system. suppose like if we assume our os is linux 4.7 we can install only 10g and 11g. but how we can install 8i and 9i database versions.
how all these oracle versions are going to be install in a single server.
please clear my doubts.
thanks a lot...!

  • Multiple Database Instances on Single Server and effect of NLS_LANG

What is the effect of the NLS_LANG registry setting on a Windows server that is to host multiple database instance each created with a different database character set ? The server needs to support data in the following languages : Thai, Chinese Traditional, Chinese Simplified, Vietnamese and Korean. Selecting the Unicode character set(AL32UTF8) is not an option since the application is not Unicode complaint.
My understanding is that as long as NLS_LANG is set correctly on the client connecting to the particular database instance then the data will be stored correctly - is this correct ?
What should NLS_LANG be set to on the server if there are multiple oracle instances with different character sets ?

My question is not in relation to connecting to the database on the server itself but with regards to client connections. What I need to know is what is the effect of the NLS_LANG setting in the registry on a server that has multiple databases each created with a different character set ?
Say for instance, the server has two databases - one created with the character set ZHS16GBK and the other created with the character set JA16SJIS and NLS_LANG is set to SIMPLIFIED CHINESE_CHINA.ZHS16GBK in the registry on the server. Will Japanese data that is inserted into the database that has character set JA16SJIS be stored correctly when it is inserted from a client with NLS_LANG set to JAPANESE_JAPAN.JA16SJIS even though NLS_LANG is set to SIMPLIFIED CHINESE_CHINA.ZHS16GBK on the server ?

  • Can Oracle Grid support multiple database versions simultaneously?

    Hi,
Quick question that likely has large ramifications - can a single Oracle Grid deployment host multiple Oracle database versions? e.g. from Version 7 through Version 11?
    Thanks

Ok, you might be able to manage it but you will have to use a 3rd party clusterware for 9i rac. I was looking at ml note 220970.1 and it says
Oracle Clusterware (CRS) will not support a 9i RAC database so you will have to leave the current configuration in place. You can install Oracle Clusterware and RAC 10g into the same cluster. On Windows and Linux, you must run the 9i Cluster Manager for the 9i Database and the Oracle Clusterware for the 10g Database. When you install Oracle Clusterware, your 9i srvconfig file will be converted to the OCR. Both 9i RAC and 10g will use the OCR. Do not restart the 9i gsd after you have installed Oracle Clusterware. Remember to check certify for details of what vendor clusterware can be run with Oracle Clusterware.
For example on Solaris, your 9i RAC will be using Sun Cluster. You can install Oracle Clusterware and RAC 10g in the same cluster that is running Sun Cluster and 9i RAC.

  • Oracle dblink to sql server, accessing multiple database on same sql server under one dblink

Hi, we have successfully managed to set up an Oracle dblink over to sql server and retrieve data.
The sql server user were using via the dblink has access to more than one database on the same sql server
But the question is how in oracle (if at all possible) do you prefix the sql statement to access this ?
    Eg:
Sqlserver_prod has user sqlserver_user which appears to be set up as default database on sqlserver_db1
But we have select access to sqlserver_db2
    all work fine as sqlserver_user
    select * from  table_fromdb1
    select * from  dbo.table_fromdb1
    select * from  sqlserver_db1.dbo.table_fromdb1
    as does
    select * from  sqlserver_db2.dbo.table_fromdb2
    over in Oracle
    Oracle_db has dblink sqlserver_prod.world connecting as sqlserver_user
    all working fine
    select * from "table_fromdb1"@sqlserver_prod
    select * from "dbo"."table_fromdb1"@sqlserver_prod
but how (if at all possible) do I access from oracle
    sqlserver_db2.dbo.table_fromdb2
without having to create a new sqlserver_db2_user referenced in a new dblink
if oracle to oracle would be
    select * from remote_oracle_schema.table@remote_oracle_db

Hi, ok cheers, I see, original gateway was connecting purely at host_name level
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO=sqlserver_host
Planning to amend this to be
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO=sqlserver_host//sqlserver_db1
    With exisiting dblink
    And to create new gateway
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO=sqlserver_host//sqlserver_db2
With new exisitng dblink, will see how we get on
    Cheers again

  • Multiple database Instance on single server

    Hi friends,
I want to install Solution manager in the same system which I have installed ECC6. So I want to install another database(10g). Can any one tell me the possibities to install it.
    regards,
    Nageshwar

    Hi Nageshwar,
    yes, it is possible.
See chapter "Multiple Oracle Homes" of the guide "SAP ERP 2005 SR2 ABAP on Windows: Oracle" available on <a href="http://service.sap.com/instguides">http://service.sap.com/instguides</a>
You can also install one more DB in your already existing ORACLE_HOME.

  • Multiple database instance on one server

    Hi experts
We are planning to implement ERP, BI, Solman, CRM and MDSD on windows/oracle platform. There is an idea about system landscape that all database instance of production systems are installed on one server and central instances of each system are installed on separate servers. Is there any performance or maintenance risk about this scenario? What is the advanteges and disadvantages of this landscape? Shall we prefer central system installation?
    I'm waiting for your recommandation.
    Best Regards...

    Hi,
From experience one disadvantage in having an Oracle farm, is if the server plays up
or needs a reboot you of course lose all the systems databases.
Also getting all customers to aggree a maintenance slot together can be a pain.
Failover needs to be considered, DR also.
IMHO separate servers, but that is my preference I'm sure there are advantages.

  • Use 1 listener for multiple database in a server

    hi guys,
just want to check whether this is the right way to configure my Listener.ORA . I am using 1 listener.ora to listen for incoming request connection from remote client. There are multiple databases installed in a server.
    LISTENER =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = ora03)(PORT = 1521))
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =

    (GLOBAL_DBNAME = O10G)
    (ORACLE_HOME = /oracle/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1)
    (SID_NAME = O10G)
)sorry i am reading about it so did not install another database to test out. Just thinking in the line that it mention that the list of SID is refering to the multiple database that is installed in a server and i am using 1 listener.
    Please further advice.

  • Multiple databases on same server

we're planning to consolidate our SAP R/3 databases on a 64bit based cluster running Windows 2003/SQL Server 2005.
the "SAP with Microsoft SQL Server 2005: Best Practices for High Availability, Maximum Performance, and Scalability" document states "SAP products support multiple instances of SQL Server 2005 on the same server. However, running the database of the SAP production system together with other application databases on one server is not recommended." and "An alternative is to run two or three SAP databases on one SQL Server 2005 instance.".
giving this, I'd like to know if it's not recommended even if the 'other application databases' are related to other instances of SAP R/3 product.
it would be useful to know why one SQL Server instance with multiple SAP databases is better than multiple SQL Server instances with one SAP database for each.
    thank you.

    Dear Matro,
    Please review the following thread:
Multiple database instances on single server on SQL2005
I also note that you state your database server is clustered using MSCS.  If this is the case you should not use a "Named Instance".  If you download the latest Netweaver 2004s Installation guide (SR1) for Windows SQL you will note that on page 172 it specifically states that you must install a "default instance".
If you plan to consolidate several SAP database systems on one host and use a default instance you need to consider the fact that all databases running on this instance will share resources such a memory cache etc.
Factors such as the size of the SAP systems, whether the systems are OLTP will influence your decision
Please post if you have any additional questions.
    Thanks

  • Multiples databases on single server

    Hello,'
I need some of the expertise opinions what are the cons and pros of having multiple databases on a single server? we have about 150 GB size of the database with millions of the recods in few tables. The reason is we have to keep one database up, while the other database is upgrading to the users. but i am little conscerned having both on same server. But we dont have an another server to accommdate, so multiple databases or multiple schemas on same box? which on has less overhead and what are the pros and cons...
    Thank you.

couldlet me know what if i create an another schema in the existing database, do i create a separate tablespaces?
-- You can create another schema in the existing database under same tablespace or different. Whatever makes sense for your application/database. Please note when you upgrade database then none of the schemas going to be available since they are part of same database.
our golas is when one db is going through upgrades another should be up and running. as you suggested can i create on 'D" drive in 2 different oracle homes for each of these databases? in this case when i shutdown one db other will be still available to users right...
    please advise.
-- Basically you will have 2 Oracle Homes on D drive. Something like D:\oracle_home\db_1 and D:\oracle_home\db_2 or whatever you directory/path names.. And database(s) can be located on same or (better) different drive.

  • How to create linked server to multiple database on same server?

    Hi Experts
I want to create linked server to multiple databases on the same server.
I have 2 database servers (ServerA and ServerB) and want to create linked server on ServerB to link multiple databases on ServerA).
I have admin right on ServerB.
I don't have admin right on ServerA but have different accounts to access on each databases on ServerA.
After I created one linked server object to a database, I cannot create another linked server object for another database as it has already used the server name which is ServerA.
    Please advise.
    Thanks.

    EXEC sp_addlinkedserver 'ServerADB1', '', 'SQLNCLI', 'ServerA', @catalog = 'DB1'
    EXEC sp_addlinkedserver 'ServerADB2', '', 'SQLNCLI', 'ServerA', @catalog = 'DB2'
    etc.
Please look up the details for sp_addlinkedserver as I typed this from memory.
I can certainly see a point in having one linked server per database, as then you don't have to hardcode the database name in the queries, and the linked-server definitions can be changed if the database name changes.

  • Multiple database updates vesus Tansaction

              Hi,
I need some help from you great minds. Here us what I am trying to accomplish:
I have a message driven bean which does a multiple update calls to an Oracle database.
I want to commit all the db updates only at the end (after all update calls execute
okay) and if there occurs any problem in any of the update calls, I want to rollback
all the previously successful update calls I have already made. I am using container
              managed transaction via a mdb.
I tried to use UserTransaciom.setRollbackOnly() call but that did not completely
help. This call rolled back the message altogether. All I wanted to do is, if
there occurs any error during a database update, rollback just the database changes
and just throw away the message. Is there a way I can just rollback the database
              changes? Any suggestions?? please. Thanks

If I understand correctly what you want to do, is the purpose to do some task or run some script in multiple databases on the same server?
If so, this is done easily by listing the database (sids) in a file and reading the file in a loop statement.
In my case, I simply create a file on the server called localsids. I keep this in /var/opt/oracle directory.
Then, in my script, I set:
    SIDFILE='/var/opt/oracle/localsids'
    NEWPASS=`cat $HOME/.xlh/sys`
    # This loop reads through the 'sidlist' and then looks for a password
    # stored in a separate directory for each sid, but if individual
    # directories do not exist, then it uses the standard system password.
    # It then opens a sqlplus session for each sid (as it loops through the
    # sidfile and executes some sql statement(s), or executes a sql script.
cat $SIDFILE | while read SID
    do
    ORACLE_SID=$SID
    export ORACLE_SID
echo $SID # this is only for my own verbose purposes
    sqlplus -s system/manager@$SID <<EOF > /tmp/chg_passwd_${SID}.sql
alter user system identified by $NEWPASS
alter user sys identified by $NEWPASS
    EOF
    done
    exit
    # In the above example, i am changing the sys and system passwords for all databases listed in the localsids file.
    Hope this helps...

I have simplified the above example to hardcode the system password into this script, however, normally I would never do this in real practice. This is just as an example to simplify how to run a loop to run a common script or sql statement in each database.

  • Multiple Database Updates

    Hi
In development environment I have many branches(copies) of a database.
For every change (ddl, dml) i have to login every database manually to execute statements, Is there a client tool that support multiple database update or if any expert ever make a customized routine for that?
And ideally as i have different named branches i wish i can define the scope of change too i.e. change execute on databases of "abc" & "pqr" branches only.

  • How to investigate high io in a RAC with multiple databases?

how to investigate high io in a RAC with multiple databases?

RAC is saying that a single server lacks the processing capacity needed for databaseA. So additional databaseA instances on additional servers are needed in  order to meet the processing demands for databaseA. Thus RAC is required.
Multiple databases on a single server says that the server has spare processing capacity and that it can not only deal with databaseA processing demands, but also with the processing load of databaseB.
So how does your statement about running multiple database RAC instances on the same RAC server node, make sense? And does your I/O issue not immediately point to the fact that no, RAC server1 cannot deal with the I/O resources required by both databaseA and databaseB?
After all, how is I/O scaled on RAC? How is ANYTHING scaled on RAC? By adding more databases to a RAC server node? Of course NOT!!
RAC scales by adding more servers (with a new database instance each) to a physical database in order to scale processing capacity and I/O. By adding more I/O channels to access the SAN/shared storage. By adding more CPUs to increase processing capacity.
Bluntly put - multiple RAC database instances on a single RAC server node is kind of an idiotic approach to scalability in my view....

Looking at setting up TDE on an 11R1 database.
How does TDE and the wallet work on multiple databases. I assume you can have one wallet, being used by multiple databases on the same server?
If I issue a change password:

Will it change my key for all databases on that server, or only the database I'm on at the itme?
