Multiple key strokes in editable JComboBox for sorting

I want to sort values of JComboBox based on key strokes in the combo. By default, JComboBox traps only one character "public int selectionForKey(char aKey,ComboBoxModel aModel)". I want to have this behaviour based on multiple character typed, e.g.
Combo has following values:
South - Ana
Scotland - Ana
Scotland - DTT
SuperMacro
My requirement is if the user types S, then the values should be sorted by S, if the user types C after S, then the values should be sorted by SC, if the user types O after S, then the values should be sorted by SO.

    How to sort on MULTIPLE Keys which are elements of
    VO's stored in a list.. without disturbing the
    ordering done by previous sorting...?Do you mean you want to do a heirarchical sort? Where the secondary key is only used when the primary keys are equal etc.? That's pretty trivial. If the primary keys are equal, check the secondary key. How do you sort words in alphabetical order? It's the same process.

  • Update the testfield when setSelectedItem() for editable JComboBox

    Hi,
    I am having problem with setSelectedItem() and setSelectedIndex() methods of editable JComboBox.
    I extended JComboBox with default dataModel. When I enter some string in the textfield of the combobox, I call insertItemAt() method to dynamically grow the list. The application requires to clear the textfield everytime I enter something and press "return" key. To make it work, I insert an empty string to the list at the very beginning and call the setSelectedItem("") method in the actionPerformed().
    Now the problem is that I know the setSelectedItem("") is called since the getActionCommand() returns "comboBoxChanged" everytime I enter something in the textfield, but the testfield is not cleared. And if I select one item from the list and press "enter" key, the textfield is cleared. To make things more interesting, after I enter the first string and press "enter", the textfield really get cleared, but not for all other later input. Is this a bug? Can anyone please help me? Thanks a lot. Below is my code snippet.
    public class MyComboBox extends JComboBox implements ActionListener
    public GsISCommComboBox()
    jbInit();
    private void jbInit() throws Exception
    this.setEditable(true);
    this.addActionListener(this);
    insertItemAt("",0);
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
    String str=null;
    String strrr=e.getActionCommand();
    System.out.println("getActionCommand: "+strrr);
    if(strrr.equalsIgnoreCase("comboBoxChanged"))
    str=(String)this.getSelectedItem();
    return;
    else
    str=strrr;
    // other stuff to process the string and do things
    setSelectedItem("");
    repaint();
    hidePopup();
    insertItemAt(str,0);

    Try inserting your string first and then, try clearing the combobox's textfield.
    insertItemAt(str,0);
    setSelectedItem("");
    hidePopup();
    repaint();
    Since you add the "" string at the begining, it will have the index 0. Perhaps, you want to insert your string this way:
    // insert string at the end
    insertItemAt(str, this.getItemCount());
    //Then use the
    setSelectedIndex(0);
    But you need to remember that if you add an item at the begining, index 0 may not be your '' '' string after that.
    I hope that it helps.

  • Save for Web keyboard key stroke not worky

    I'd swear I've asked or seen this discussed in these forums...but I can find no thread, even when I search for my own screen name. At any rate, I think it also happened to me back in version 6. I'm now in version 8 on a Mac.
    The symptoms are the same as the last time this happened. The "shortcut" key strokes (on the Mac) are command + shift + option + S (probably use 'alt' instead of 'option and "control' instead of 'command' on Windows?). This will usually show a brief darkening of the File menu, but nothing else happens. Until...the same keys are pressed again! Of course, mousing to the menu item works fine, but I have managed to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome and still press all four keys with one hand! Sometimes I get my cat to help...
    Since Adobe is gracious enough to provide about three dozen various pref files, it should be a breeze to start archiving them and deleting the originals. NOT! However, in my searching for the likely pref file, I have discovered that the "Adobe Save For Web 8.0 Prefs" file seems to be AWOL on my System! I have over a dozen backups of that file in Time Machine, despite the fact that they all show exactly the same Modified date, which would normally be the only reason TM would save another copy of the file. This may also indicate why the settings for the Save For Web dialog never remember the last used settings; the file thinks it is getting written to but never changes its Modified date even thought that 'state' is obviously recognized by the OS. But that's all beside the point and I digress...
    SO...does anyone remember the 'trick' for getting PSE 6/8 to remember the Save For Web keystrokes the first time they are used, instead of waiting for 'verification?'
    Thanks!

    Uh oh. You should have had an uninstaller in the PSE 8 folder in applications. I'm afraid you may have set yourself up for bigger problems by doing it this way. You may well find that you will eventually need to download and run the CS4 cleanscript to get straightened back out again.
    You may be correct, but I've had no other problems after all the different un-install methods. The only pieces that are hard to find are those that Adobe chooses to hide deep in System areas. I suppose since they were one of the first Mac developers, they think they have special capabilities to put stuff any and every where they want. As well as special dispensation to do things anti-Mac ways. I can't claim to be a power-user, but I have never, ever felt the need to purchase/use any special "uninstaller" app. And I can't think of another app I've ever owned that even needed an "uninstaller" for it. That includes Canvas, php, Apache setups, etc. Frankly, and this is simply my opinion and obviously of little importance to absolutely no one else, the way Adobe does things seems to be extremely un-organized, not-well-thought-out and downright non-Mac. The only thing even marginally close to their confusing instal/uninstall process is Stanford's Folding@home set up. It sometimes requires a few Terminal commands...
    I will perform a search for that CS4 "clearscript" thing, however. Thanks!
    Even the response I got from my Support post assured me that...
    reset/restore the Preferences, click Yes or OK . Now try to use the "Save for Web" keyboard command by pressing "Alt+Shift+Crtl+S". I am positive that after following the above steps your issue will be resolved .
    OK, I get the rest/restore step. but what does the "alt+shift+Crtl+S" have to do with anything? It certainly is not the keyboard short cut for the Mac version of Elements. Perhaps the chap didn't notice the details in my message or the hardware/software information that came with my request for help. I find it strange that somehow the language differences cause the tech's positive belief that his steps would fix the issue that he also presents:
    If the issue is still not resolved then please send us the below mentioned information so that we can provide you with the best possible resolution:-
    1. Have you recently made any changes to your computer?
    2. Are you logged in as administrator ?
    3. Does the issue persist on another system or another user account ?
    4.     Do you get any error message while pressing the combination of "Alt+Shift+Crtl+S" keys on the keyboard? if yes then send us the screen shot of the error message that you are getting
    5.     Please provide the exact system Configuration with details along with the Versions.
    Every single one of those questions was included with the initial message I sent.
    I suspect that the problem is, indeed, in my System, somewhere. I installed Elements on my wife's MBP and it operated normally, even the command+option(alt)+shift+S command. So, when I get some time this week, I'll start up in Safe mode and see if that helps. If not, I'll start removing third-party Pref Panels and apps, a few at a time. If none of that helps, I may try retrieving files from Time Machine. As a last effort, I can always do an Archive and (re)Install of Snow Leopard. I'm just not sure it's worth all the effort to get one measly short cut... The only thing I know for sure is that I will not be seeking any more help from Adobe's "tech support." Why bother, they don't/can't even read the messages their own system sends!

  • BPC for Excel: Are multiple key ranges really possible?

    Hi Experts,
    in a training document I found to possibility of multiple key ranges, to make an input schedule sheet more attractive or insert rows with excel formulas etc.
    For example: ColKeyRange: EVRNG(H13:J13;M13:O13)
    RowKeyRange: EVRNG(G15:G20;L15:L20)
    In my case I want the balance sheet separated. On the left side asset positions, on the right side liability positions (in columns for bot: Previous Year | Actual | Plan
    If I define my input schedule like that it gets messed up. No figures, weird formatting etc. Have you implemented an input schedule with multiple key ranges and did it work ok?
    Thank you,
    Cora

    Hi Cora,
    Yes, multiple key ranges do work, but it is a bit complicated as Dzmitry suggests. Your example row expansion will not work, as the row expansion needs to remain in the same columns for each part of the expansion. (In other words, EVRNG(G15:G20;L15:L20) is wrong but EVRNG(G15:G20;G25:G30) is ok.) To achieve your result, Dzmitry is correct that you will probably need to use two EVDREs.
    That said, multiple expansions work as follows:
    If you are not using an expansion, or you use NOEXPAND in your columns or rows, you can use a multiple key range for formatting purposes and simply hardcode in the members that you wish to see in each key range.
    If you want to see different expansions in each key range, then you need to use a special expansion syntax. To take your example, say you have a single dimension in your column with column range defined EVRNG(H13:J13;M13:O13). You could have your column expansion on the category dimension be "PRIORYR,ACTUAL,PLAN|PLAN,ACTUAL,PRIORYR", giving you the same set of categories reversed in each column.

  • Multiple key items for a single data item?

    hi all. In my application multiple key items may have the same data item, such as:
    key data
    1 abcd
    1 abcd
    1 abcd
    2 efg
    2 efg
    but it may lead to a lot of duplicate storage spaces. I can use two dbs by giving each data item an ID, just like:
    db1
    key data
    1 1
    1 1
    1 1
    2 2
    2 2
    db2
    key data
    1 abcd
    2 efg
    is there any other simple solutions? thanks in advance

    Hello,
    This sounds like a data modeling question. I think your solution is reasonable, though you'll get a lot of good ideas and info if you read up on normalization for relational schemas - there's a ton of literature out there. Just do a search for "database normalization".
    Normalization is intended to eliminate redundancy and also avoid various update anomalies.
    Warm regards.

  • Editing Lyrics for Multiple Songs

    is it possible to edit lyrics for more than one song at a time. it is very annoying to right click each song then click the lyrics tab and editing the lyrics in there. thank you!

    I assume you mean being able to add the same lyrics to the same song that appears multiple times in your library (album version, live version, etc.)?
    I don't think there is a way other than entering something in the search box to narrow the list to those songs only, click the first one, Get Info, Lyrics tab, paste in lyrics, then hitting the NEXT button on the bottom to go to the next track which will open still in the lyrics tab so you can paste again, next, paste, next, paste, etc.

  • Select a value in JComboBox by key stroke

    Hi all,
    I m trying to create a GUI with comboxes, in which users can select the value by pressing keys. e.g.
    ComboBox:
    Apple
    Boy
    Cat
    Dog
    when press 'A', it should go to "Apple", and something like this.
    In my case, the objects in the Combo box are not Strings, they are bean objects, e.g.
    public class Apple{
       private String name;
       private double weight;
       public Apple() {}
       public void setName(String name) {
          this.name = name;
       public String getName() {
          return this.name;
       public void setWeight(double weight) {
          this.weight = weight;
       public double getWeight() {
          return this.weight;
       public String toString() {
          return this.name;
    }in this Object, its 'toString' value is the value it's gona display in the ComboBox. Othger entries in combo box are likewise.
    I m not sure this is the problem or not, i just couldn't get the right value selected by key stroke.
    Anyone can help?
    Thanks!
    best regards

    Works fine for me in this example:

  • Trying to save key strokes with a for loop

    I have been trying to action script for years with no
    success. I to some time off and learned javascript and some oop
    (ruby) so I thought I would take another stab at it. I am still
    having problems. Here goes...
    I have several movieclips on the stage that will be set up as
    buttons. They all have the same effects associated with mouseover
    and mouseout so I thought I could save some key strokes with a for
    loop. But I can't get it working right. Could someone tell me what
    I am doing wrong please?
    If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

    kglad,
    Thanks for taking a look. In answer to your question. The
    movie clip instance names are mc_ItemText0 ... mc_ItemText3.
    quote:
    those declarations at the top of your for-loop aren't doing
    anything useful. what are the names of you movieclips that are
    on-stage?
    In reg\ards to the variable declarations, sorry my variable
    names are causing confusion. I use the name "mc" for two different
    variables. Once for the FOR loop and a separate time locally in the
    functions grow and shrink. The ones set for the For loop are used
    in the 'onEvents' at the bottom of the script. Sorry for the
    confusion.
    Because the code works if I take it out of the FOR loop and
    replace the
    's with the numbers that corruspond to the movie clip; I don't
    think the similar names are conflicting because of the scope. To
    make the code more readable and eliminate confusion I have posted
    the code with unique variable names.
    I have searched the forum for FOR loop difficulties and
    found several cases that seemed similar to mine, but I didn't
    understand what was happening.
    Examples:

  • How can I use a FocusEvent to distinguish among editable JComboBoxes?

    Hi,
    I have a Frame with multiple editable JComboBoxes, but I am at a loss as to how to sort them out in the focusGained() method.
    It is easy when they are not editable, because the FocusEvent getSource() Method returns the box that fired the event. That lets me read an instance variable that is set differently for each box.
    But with editable boxes, the FocusEvent is not fired by the box. It is fired by a Component object returned by getEditor().getEditorComponent(). So far I cannot find a way to query that object to find the box it it tied to. (I hope this isn't going to be painfully embarassing.).
    Anyway, the code below produces a frame with four vertical components: a JTextField (textField), a NON-Editable JComboBox (comboBox1) and two Editable JComboBoxes (comboBox2 & comboBox3).
    This is the command screen produced by :
    - Running the class
    - Then tabbing through all the components to return to the text field.
    I am not sure why, but it gives the last component added the foucus on startup.Focus Gained - Begin: *****
       This is the comboBox that Is Not Editable
    Focus Gained - End: *******
    Focus Gained - Begin: *****
       This Is The TextField
    Focus Gained - End: *******
    Focus Gained - Begin: *****
       Class: class javax.swing.plaf.metal.MetalComboBoxEditor$1
       Name: javax.swing.plaf.metal.MetalComboBoxEditor$1

       This is the comboBox that Is Not Editable
    Focus Gained - End: *******
    Focus Gained - Begin: *****
       This Is The TextField
    Focus Gained - End: *******As you can see, the FocusEvent source for both editable boxes is a MetalComboBoxEditor. Both have identical names.
    Can anyone help me get from there back to the actual combo box so I can read the instance variable to see which one fired the event?

  • What is the best way for sorting?

    Hi i have 1000 customers in the database. I need to display them in the combo box. combox is editable. As the user types the letters i need to filter and display the customer names. for example if the user types 'a' in the combox i have to display all the customer names that starts with 'a'. if the customer types 'as' then i have to display only names that start with 'as' in the combo box popup. for every key stroke i have to filter and display the customer names.
    for this there are two approaches:-
    1. for every key stroke go to database and retrieve the sorted results and display them. In this way sorting happens in the database.
    2. pull all the customers into java once, cash them and sort them accordingly based on the key strokes. In this sorting happens in our java code.
    few friends said that going to databse for every key stroke is expensive. I feel pulling all the customers at once and cashing them in java is not a good idea.
    I am really confused. I need an expert suggestion. which way is best? why is it the best way? what are the pros and cons in both the ways. please help me.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks ejp but initially if the combo box is not empty. that means if he did not typed any letter i will be displaying all the names.No. That's the mistake. Don't do that. A combobox with 1000 or 5000 items is completely useless.Do it the way I said.
    My problem is if there are 5000 customers then what? will it not create a performance issue.Of course it will. It will also create a major performance issue for the user.
    However you seem to have missed something else. By populating the combobox with anything, you are already running a cache. No two ways about it, and no way to avoid it. So whatever you populate it with, and whenever you do it, all you have to do when the user types another keystroke is filter the combobox model to exclude everything that doesn't match the prefix he has typed. The issue of going back to the database doesn't even arise.

  • My G5 won't boot up. The Gray screen comes on and it thinks about it until the fan revs up like it is about to explode. A friend said to start it up with the OS disk and then go to utilities. Didin't work. Any suggestions? Isn't there a key stroke to help

    Oh, so this is where I ask my question. Sorry, first time here. As I was saying in my long intro, the gray screen come up and the thing is spinning at the bottom, but nothing happens. Then the fan starts reving up like it is about to explode and I have to manually shut it off. A friend told me to start it up with the OS disk and then go to utilities. I couldn't find the thing, so I went out and bought another. Needless to say, it didn't work. Is there a key stroke to help jump start the machine? How can I get into this thing? I would prefer not to take it in because there are a lot of things on there I don't want just anyone to have access to.Thanks, in advance, for your help!

    G5? PowerPC? 10.5? or earlier....

    Apple has a number of resources like "Power or Startup Quick Assist"

    Your drive does need to be repaired, and best things to buy are another backup recovery drive, with a small OS X partition; a copy of Disk Warrior is expensive @ $90 but excellent and best.
    Never bother with or use the drive or reinstall while there are errors. Don't take a "clean' bill from Apple Disk Utility to mean there are no errors. Only that it didn't find what it looked for.

    Make sure to have multiple backup sets and of your system so if there is a serious problem, you can just erase and restore to be back runninig.
    Sounds like your G5 though needs PMU reset, not PRAM, and the best way for those is to clear nvram instead. might even want to check for dust; tell what System Profile says (later) as to "PowerMacX,Y" or "MacProX,1"

    The Utility menu is on the menu bar of an "OS X Install DVD" and at the point where you get to but stop at "install....' for OS X. you probably do need to install OS X on another drive to work from.
    Oh, a real severe issue and damage to the drive directory or filesystem CAN in cases prevent booting from DVD (the system still tries to find and see what boot volumes are present) and can help to pull or disconnect the drive. Putting a drive in a FW case to turn on after startup is very useful.

    Hi,
    i have a problem using an editable JComboBox as cell editor in a JTable.
    When i edit the combo and then I press the TAB or ENTER key then all works fine and the value in the TableModel is updated with the edited one, but if i leave the cell with the mouse then the value is not passed to the TableModel. Why ? Is there a way to solve this problem ?
