Multiuser XTRA connecting to NNTP server.

Hi There
Director 9.0 (MX 2004) running on Win 2000 Pro.
So I connect to the nntp server using:
res = gMUI.connectToNetServer(gUser, gPassword, gNNTP, gPort,
"Test", 1 )
and get a reply back stating:
[#errorCode: 0, #recipients: ["<my login id>],
#senderID: "<my usenet server id>", #subject: "String",
#content: "200 NNTP server ready - posting allowed", #timeStamp: 0]
But when I issue a:
res = gMUI.SendNetMessage("system", "dummy", "GROUP
alt.atheism")
I don't get a response back through my default message
handler.
Seeing as I started on this about an hour ago, presumably I'm
doing something terribly stupid.

I have no experience with nntp servers, so I can only comment
on what I understand in your code.
You are creating a connection in text mode, by using 1 as the
sixth parameter to the connectToNetServer() call. Many of the
features that you can expect from an SMUS connection to an
SMUServer are unavailable when you work in text mode.
You can find an article on using text mode to talk to a POP3
email server at

Perhaps this will give you some pointers as to how to work with
your nntp server.

    I'm attempting to do something fairly simple with the

    director projectors running on 4 PCs sitting in a wait state. I
    will have a fifth computer setup with Director that will have a
    basic start button. When pressing this button I would like the
    other 4 Director projectors to start playing. Then once they are
    done, they return to their wait state. It seems like a simple thing
    to do with some network calls, and I *think* the multiuser xtra
    could handle this. Can anyone point me in the right direction or
    offer some basic coding help? I'm up against a tight deadline.

    Yes, the MUS xtra can do this. There could be other ways as
    well, but it
    would not be too difficult using the MUS xtra either. If you
    are going
    to use a peer-to-peer method I think all the machines would
    need to be
    on the same LAN (or each host projector would need to be on
    an a
    different LAN). Otherwise you would have to use the actual
    MUS Server
    which makes it more complicated. I myself don't have much
    experience
    with the MUS Server, but I have used the MUS Xtra to create
    p2p
    applications.
    The basic idea is as follows. Your four projector would each
    be running
    an instance of the xtra in 'host' mode (using the
    WaitForNetConnection
    function). Your 5th projector would start four instances of
    the Xtra as
    a client(connectToNetServer), with each instance connecting
    to one of
    the projectors running as host.
    After all of the connections are up, then you could easily
    send messages
    from the 5th projector to one or more of the host projectors
    telling
    them to do anything you wanted (play a video, run an
    animation, whatever).
    In my learning process, one of the learning sources I found
    was a sample
    movie the demonstrates making a simple connection.

    I might be able to offer you some assistance (as time
    permits). I
    learned quite a bit about using the MUS Xtra to a create P2P
    application, specifically one that uses multiple instance of
    the Xtra in
    a single movie similar to what you are doing. I wrote what I
    believe is
    a fairly decent Parent Script for creating generic client and
    server
    instances of the xtra. The script handles all of the basic
    (required)
    portions of making the connection and allows you to add any
    custom
    messages handlers need on top of that.

    Try iTunes Folder Watch or iTunes Library Updater. Folder Watch is much faster on the adding files front, can be set to run in the background and includes a useful exclusion feature, however it’s slow at removing orphans. iTLU is better for this although doing it manually after looking at a list of proposed removals generated by Folder Watch is probably faster still. iTLU can also be set to update iTunes when you've used 3rd party tools to change tag info.
    You may need to amend the list of file types these programs look for. My list includes:
    .mp3 .mp4 .m4a .m4b .m4p .m4v .mov .wav .aif .mid .ipa .ipg .ite .itlp .m4r .pdf
    Note the last 6 types may not be recognised as already being in the library so should either be omitted from the search or you can add (at least for Folder Watch) individual exclusions for files you know are already in your library.

    If you're trying to connect to a Bonjour server on the remote network, that won't work over a layer 3 VPN. Use something like Hamachi or one of the SSH-tunnelling Bonjour proxy apps for that.

    I have tried from so many forms. This is so frustrating. Thank for everyone/anyone who wants to help. So this is what happened: I had to uninstall my previous sqlserver 2012(which worked great) for some reason, and I uninstalled everything from that download.
    Then I installed the trial edition of sql server 2012 (64 Bit) and It wouldn't connect to the database. (Error mentioned above.) My local DB is COWBOYS. (COWBOYS is also my computer name.) After this, I have tried downloading sqlexpress and sqlserver 64bit
    many times and cannot connect to my local DB. 
    How do I connect to my Local DB? 
    Also, I think this might help: (When I run sqlserve.exe, which I was able to find in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\LocalDB\Binn, I get an error: Your SQL server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with(Error getting
    instance ID from name). Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem.
    I would happily re install it, if it wasn't my 20th time.
    I don't have any remote connections, I don't use username/password, only window authentication. I work mostly on visual studio, but without able to store /retrieve data, I don't know how to survive.
    May be the solution is very simple, but I am too frustrated.

    It sounds like there are a couple things going on here.  First check if you have a successful install of SQL Server, then we'll figure out the connection issues.
    Can you launch SQL Server Configuration Manager and check for SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) if default instance or SQL Server (other name) if you've configured your instance as a named instance.  Once you find this, make sure the service is started. 
    If not started, try to start it and see if it throws an error.  If you get an error, post the error message your hitting.  If the service starts, you can then launch SSMS and try to connect.  If you have a default instance, you can use the machine
    name in the connection dialog.  Ex:  "COWBOYS" where Cowboys is the machine name.  However, if you named the SQL Server instance during install, you'll need to connect using the machine\instance format.  Ex:  COWBOYS\Romo (where Romo
    is the instance name you set during install).
    You can also look at the summary.txt file in the SQL Server setup error logs to see what happened on the most recent install.  Past install history is archived in the log folder if you need to dig those up to help troubleshoot, but the most
    recent one may help get to the bottom of it if there is an issue with setup detecting a prior instance that needs to be repaired.

  • Client Upgraded from Tiger to Leopard Can No Longer Connect to Tiger Server

    I just finished upgrading a G5 2GHz DP Powermac from Tiger to Leopard. This was an Archive and Install upgrade with importing the old settings. After verifying the account migration, including .Mac connectivity, and fixing all 3rd party software compatibilities/upgrades, I tried to connect to our Tiger 4.11 server by clicking on the server's Icon in the Shared section of the Finder Sidebar. The finder then switches to browse the the server for shares: "Connecting..." is displayed under the tool bar, with a "Share Screen..." and "Connect As..." buttons to the right.
    At this point the "Connecting..." remains displayed with the spinning circle in the bottom right of the Finder window.... spinning. This situation continues for several minutes until is seems the system gives up.
    If I click on the Path button on the Tool Bar, and go up to the Shared level, ALL the Shares on the Network are displayed, including all the Tiger Client machine shares. I can click on the triangle beside the Tiger Client's icon, and all the drives and home directories on the Mac are listed. All the client shares can be accessed without any issues. NOTE: There are no other Leopard clients on the LAN.
    Prior to the Leopard upgrade, this client could connect to the Tiger server as well. All the other clients on the LAN can access the Tiger server also.
    On the Leopard client I have tried clicking and the "Connect As..." button and using the menu "Connect to Server" and specifying the server's IP, and I get the same "Connecting..." message with a "non-connecting" result.
    I can only assume that somehow the Account Name and password are not being passed correctly. But, using "Connect As..." should resolve that. However, "Connect As..." does not give me a user/password window!
    If I check the AFP Access log on the Server, the only messages displayed are "Mounted Volume..." No messages in the error log, and no messages in the "Connections" section.
    Can anyone help me figure out why the Leopard client can not connect to the Tiger Server?
    My apologies if the description of my problem is a bit disjointed. I have been thrown into server admin and am learning "Trial by Fire".
    Any help or suggestions on how to resolve this issue will be greatly appreciated.

    OK. A quick update.
    After waiting for about 10 minutes for the rotating circle in the bottom right corner to stop, I was able to click on the "Connect As..." button. It took another 10 minutes, but the Connect As window eventual popped up. I entered the Userid and Password (saving to Keychain) and was able to see all the sharepoints on the the server. I browsed all the connected drives and folders without issue.
    I then disconnected from the server. Reviewing the AFP logs on the server shows messages for the connection Login and Logout.
    I then tried to reconnect to the server, and again another 10 minutes wait, although this time the Leopard client eventually connected automatically with the proper User, as per the AFP logs confirms.
    Although, the client can now connect to the server, for it to take 10 minutes will be unacceptable to management, not to mention the end user. Tiger clients can connect in a couple seconds!
    Is there a way to reduce the Leopard login time to, say, a couple seconds, like it does with the Tiger clients?
    Again, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Find Acrobat.exe on your computer.  Right click the program and click 'Troubleshoot Compatibility'.  Set the compatibility to Windows XP service pack 3.

    I have an iPad 3, iPad Mini and iPhone 5S and they are all sluggish on capitalisation using shift keys. I hope that Apple will solve the problem because it is driving me crazy.
    I find using a Microsoft Surface and Windows 8 phone, which I also have, work as well as all the ios devices before the ios 7 upgrade.
    It has something to do with the length of time that you need to hold the shift key down. The shift key needs to be held longer than the letter key for the capitalisation to work. For some reason, this is a major change in the way we have learnt to touch type on computers. I am having to relearn how to type!

  • Cannot send email with Mail app-..can't connect to AOL server anymore??

    Up until today my MAIL app in my iMac let me use an email address that is from the AOL.com group (netscape.net)…I cannot send emails now because I can't get the computer to connect to the server. My iPad will….but not the desktop. I tried using a different server name; smtp.nestcape.net, which is the one I used in the iPad…but the iMac won't let me change it to that one..so back to the old smtp.aol.com……Still my MAIL app is not recognizing this or letting me connect!?!. I tried creating a new password at the wedpage of that email account.. successfully..but it has made no difference. I am stumped and have wasted half the day trying to deal with this. Anyone else have such an experience? HELP…PLEASE!

Fortunately after I wrote this post…I don't know what happened but I filled in my mail preference settings for the umteenth time with my new email password and voila! It worked. For some reason however…now when I open the Mail App I do still get a prompt asking me if I want to use this server….and it is, of course, the one and only I have listed.!?!?! The thing that irritates me…is…that I had done NOTHING to cause a problem to begin with. I think my email account at aol (nestcape) may have been hacked and my password stolen or compromised in some way??...and perhaps that caused a glitch in my mail app??? I am no techy, but I should have started out with my intuition and changed the password first before going mental….When something like this happens it makes one feel so vulnerable.…I usually feel well secured with my lone iMac and now my new iPad…ANYWAY…thank tyou  for addressing my issue and I have bookmarked those links…for future reference which I hope I never need.   • I cannot acess some of my emails. Thunderbird keeps saying "connection to SMTP server (email adress) timed out. What does that mean? What do I do please?

    I had been asked by ICANN some days ago to do something but I thought it was a scam so ignored it. Most other users I have spoken to have never heard of ICANN or been asked to 'register' with them or whatever. Anyway, post writing to you I have now 'registered' with them . When I now click on my incoming email adress it just says "failed to connect to server" but why it fails I do not know.

    To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:

    I cannot send emails from my Thunderbird. Every time I try, an error message shows up saying that the connection to SMTP server has timed out:
    "Sending of message failed.
    The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server smtp.lineone.net timed out. Try again or contact your network administrator."
    I have looked at many different possible solutions and tried them, but nothing seems to be working. I have tried several different ports, failed to send in Safe Mode with Networking and Thunderbird safe mode without add-ons and tried many different settings. I have ensured that the my settings on Thunderbird match the settings that my ISP recommends. My anti-virus software is not affecting it either. Maybe there is something I am missing but I would really appreciate any suggestions!

    Firstly, I would suggest reading this support article: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cannot-send-messages
    If that doesn't help, try some of these things (not sorted in any particular order):
    *Test your connection in another network. There might just be some blocked ports in your router or conflict of some sort.
    * Test your smtp settings in another email client (to ensure that they actually work). If it doesn't work, there might be some missmatch with the settings (even though you have ensured that they match), or some restriction by your router or something.

  • Lost ActiveX connection with LabVIEW server

    I have called LabVIEW in TestStand and tried to execute the test cases .
    While executing I got the following error:  ( Lost ActiveX connection with LabVIEW server.
    The LabVIEW adapter will try to reconnect on the next execution attempt.-18001; An error occurred accessing the LabVIEW ActiveX automation server.).

    Same error.  Is anyone from NI going to bother commenting on this?  It's been >8 months...
