Music found in two separate locations and duplicate songs found

My apologies if this question has been asked before...
Recently one of my playlists "dissapeared." I searched a few forums and tried a few suggestions, but I felt the best resolution was to retrieve the iTunes library files from my backup. This worked fine, but I noticed one of the songs I recently imported was no longer in iTunes, but still could be found within the itunes folder in Finder. I figured this was not a big deal and something must have happened to the library database that caused it to crash. But this promted me to start looking at the folders and files in my iTunes library. First I noticed that I had the same music in two locations:
myHomeFolder>Music>iTunes>iTunes Music>Music   and    myHomeFolder>Music>iTunes>Music
But I found they were not exatly the same after checking the info of both music folders. I found the music in the iTunes Music>Music folder was about 4 times the size of the other. After viewing the files in the folders of the iTunes Music>Music folder I found there are duplicates of every song in every album in this folder. In some cases there are three copies of the same song.
Note that the same song is found within the same album folder. For instance: within the Billy Joel Glass Houses album I have the following files:
01 You May Be Right 1.mp3
01 You May Be Right 2.mp3
01 You May Be Right.mp3
My first question is why do I have two different locations for my music? Within iTunes I verified the only files in iTunes are in the iTunes Music>Music folder. So I assume I can delete the other folder. But this leads me to my second question - Why do I have two and three duplicates of the same song? And lastly what do I do about it? Should I leave everything as is? Shold I start deleting files? How do I prevent this from happening again?
I am using a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.8.4 and iTunes 11.0.5. I allow iTunes to consolidate my files and reorganize the files...
Thanks.

Two things to add to this:
First, one of music folder locations in my previous post is incorrect. It is not "iTunes Music>Music". It is supposed to be "iTunes Media>Music". I cannot figure out how to edit my post.
Second, I see pretty much all of the filenames of the music in iTunes has a 1 or 2 and the end of the filename. See the images. How did this happen, and how do i fix it?

I purchased a song almost two years ago and the song is no longer present in my library, but it is listed on itunes store as purchased.... How do I get this song back?

@caragam, if the songs are no longer in your purchase history it means either they have been hidden or the original items are no longer available for sale on the iTunes Store or you are logged into the store with a different Apple ID.
To see if they have been hidden in iTunes pull down Store > View my AppleID. Enter your password when prompted. In the middle of the screen, click "view hidden purchases." See if the purchased items are here. If they are unhide them and go back to your purchase history and re-download them.
If the purchases are not hidden and you do not have a backup then the songs are gone and there is no way to recover them. This is why we keep backups.
If you used a different Apple ID to purchase the song, log out of the store and log in with the appropriate Apple ID and download the song. Be aware this could trigger a 90 day lock out of the other store account so make sure you really, really want that song.

  • How can I implement two TCP/IP servers (on two separate machines) and one TCP/IP client (on third machine)

I have an application where I need to send data via TCP/IP from two separate machines to a third machine. The machines are on a local area network connected through a network switch. The data are generated independently through data acquisition by the two independent machines before are sent to the client on third machine. Each machine has one network card. Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you have three separate machines, you don't need to use separate ports.  They will have three IP addresses.
Remember this rule: TCP connections are EXACTLY like telephone connections.
Have your client open two connections: same port on two different IP addresses.
    Each client listens for connections.
After connections are established, you get to decide the protocol:  maybe the client should explicitly ask for data, maybe the servers just dump it without being asked. It's up to you.

  • Manually manage music + import .m3u playlist to iphone 5 = duplicate songs

    hello,
I tried searching the forums for a related questions but didn't find any. if it exists let me know.
i have a iphone 5 (ios 6) and a ipod 2g (ios 4.2). I use itunes on windows and manage both devices manually for music and videos. Now I have a playlist in WMP which I exported as a .m3u file.
In itunes, I can import the playlist and it shows up under the 'playlists' correctly. Now I wanted to transfer this playlist to my ipod and iphone (note: my ipod and iphone already have all the songs in the playlist plus many others. I never use them in 'sync' mode).
I was under the impression that a playlist is just a list of pointers to songs and not songs themselves. So when I drag the playlist into the ipod within itunes, it creates a new playlist with that name on the ipod and correctly transfers the pointers onto the ipod. the playlist works perfectly on the ipod and there and no duplicate songs.
now with the new iphone 5 and new ios 6, something seems to be different. when i drag the playlist into the iphone, it does create a new playlist but it copies all the songs again, even though the exact songs (all metadata identical since they're from the same physical source on my harddisk - album, artists, art, title, etc). so it creates duplicates of these songs.
now the still tougher part. I tunes apparently has a find duplicates feature. But it onyl seem to work for music imported into itunes library. It is greyed out if you click on the iphone and then try to find duplicates (if iphone is set to manually manage music.)
so is this expected behaviour? I think this is a bug in the new ios since the drag drop playlist manually works perfectly in ios 4.2.
    any thoughts?

Unfortunately, you'll need to 'start fresh,' as it were. However, you could transfer your library from the old computer and sync. This MAY keep you from having to erase everything. Worst case scenario, if you transfer your library, though, would be to wipe it and then load the same content right back on.

  • Is it possible to store your itunes library in two separate locations?

I currently have my entire iTunes library on a My Passport external hard-drive but I would also like to store my iTunes library on a separate My Book external hard-drive. The My Book is 2TB and I essentially wanted to store the movies on that external; not necessarily the movies and music currently in iTunes. Is there a way I can keep my iTunes library on the My Passport but also have it on the My Book external hard-drive as well?

Move one of the folders in the iTunes library to the external drive in the Finder, and with iTunes not running, open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder. Enter the following:
    ln -s
The l in the command is a lowercase L. Drag the folder on the external drive into the Terminal window followed by the folder on the laptop drive. Next, drag the folder on the laptop drive to the desktop in the Finder and press Enter in the Terminal window. Reopen iTunes and verify that everything works properly; when this has been done, delete the original folder from the laptop drive's desktop.

  • Need iPhoto '11 help (file location and duplicates)

I recently upgraded to Lion and am having problems in iPhoto that I've never had before.
1:  Where is the actual photo file?  The photos successfully load into iPhoto but they do NOT appear in my hard drive in my "Pictures" file.  When I try to attach them to an email, a "Media" section opens and I can attach from iPhoto that way but I'm not seeing the actual photo file.  I don't want to delete photos from my camera without being positive that the file is on my computer.
2:  Duplicates!  Holy duplicates!  The first time I did an upload in iPhoto it uploaded everything in triplet.  The second time I did an upload, it attempted to upload in double but I selected only one of each.  How do I get it to not do this at all?  Why would I want duplicate photos in the first place?

    1. How the files are stored has nothing to do with the OS you're on. Obviously, the last version of iPhoto you had was v6 or earlier.
Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
    Want to look inside?
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
    Standard Warning:
Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things,, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Back-up in Two Separate Locations

I have a Mini-mac server and a Time Capsule for backup in my office. I would like to have a second backup of my files offsite - it is actually required by my insurance company. Is it possible to have the Mini-mac backup to the on-site Time Capsule and to an offsite drive in my home over the internet via my Airport Extreme?

That's theoretically possible, but would be extremely slow, and not automatic (you'd have to tell Time Machine each time you wanted to switch destinations).  The usual way to do it is via the "Back to my Mac" feature of MobileMe/iCloud, although some have managed to do it some other way.
You might be able to use one of the "cloud" backup systems, such as Mozy or Carbonite.  They're quite slow, too, of course.
A better solution might be to use a different app, to a portable external drive you can take offsite.  Just as an example, I have one of the LaCie "Rugged" series, that live up to their name, and get very good reviews.  See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for some suggestions.

  • "Mixes" and duplicate songs?

    Hey there,
I have a pretty robust library, and I pride myself on keeping up with the "scene" (lol).
My friends and I often exchange "mixes" ala sendspace, and it's a great way for us to get cued into new music.
However, sometimes a friend will make a mix that has a song in it THAT I ALREADY HAVE.
But since it's an essential part of the "flow" of the mix, it pains me to delete it.
    But I HATE duplicates!
Is there any way to create a sort of "alias" in iTunes?
Or, perhaps, is this a use of the "grouping" or "sorting" functions I've somehow managed to avoid up until now?
Also… per the MIX itself, obviously I don't want to change the "Album Name" to "Sarah's Mix!" or something like that. Should I be using the "grouping" or "sorting" functions to denote and separate these mixes?
I don't think I want separate playlists for each.
    Thanks in advance!
    e

If you create an iTunes playlist for the mix, then yes you can use a single iTunes library entry in multiple playlists.
After you create your next mix, make sure to post the playlist on Zen Running Order.

  • ITunes and Duplicate Songs...

Does anyone know of an EASIER way to delete duplicates then holding CTL and clicking?? I'm running ALOT of duplicates here. If there is a way to like just select one of the duplicates for all of them at one time...That would be awesome. Thank you.

Check out Robert Jacobson's scripts at:

There is one to delete duplicates and also one to remove dead tracks - ones iTunes can't find.
It's best to download the EXE version and you chose the script when you run it.

  • ! and duplicate songs

I've just been through the whole palaver of transferring my itunes over to my new PC, which all went pretty smoothly. Because I had to do the transfer in 2 loads, I followed the instructions for if you already have stuff on your new itunes. Again, this went OK, except that I know have around 4,000 songs in duplicate, half of which have the ! next to them because they're not in the right place.
Is there any way I can get rid of all these in one go, without having to scroll down all 4,000 tracks manually?
    Thanks

Yes, I have a script that will delete all the "!" files. See this post:

  • Playing in two seperate locations simultaneously

I'm curious if anyone here knows why iTunes (or anything else for that matter) can't play in two separate locations simultaneously i. e. Computer and an Airport Express. What is the limitation that restricts us from being able to have music in two places at once?
    Dan Carter

There is a way to play music through iTunes to remote speakers and your computer at the same time. Unfortunatly there is no way to get them to sink, as Airport has a lag of 2 seconds. I use: http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/faq.php
the nice thing about this is you can also stream from any program to your Airport.
I imagine if you really wanted to sink them you could have two versions of iTunes installed on one computer and play the The Airtunes first through Airfoil and then start the other song playing from you computer 2 seconds or so later.
    Good luck

  • Can a mac mini be set up to run two separate users at the same time?

I work for a middle school and we need to purchase 20 computers that will just be used to run internet apps. Though we have all Macs, we don't have a big budget and for this one use only, we are condsidering purchasing inexpensive HP all-in-ones for about $450 each. However, I was wondering if a Mac Mini can be first set up with 2 partitions, install the OS on both partitions, then run two different users, with two separate monitors and keyboards, at the same time? This way, instead of purchasing 20 Windows computers, we could purchase 10 Mac Mini's (and displays) and save money, and still be supporting just one OS throughout the campus.

If you setup a server, as in the Mac OS X Server Installation, pages 23ff show configurations, you can have multiple users, but they must all have computers.  Some installations can be done with dumb terminals but that is not what you seem to want.  Unix machines do have a multiple simultaneous user capability but you still have to have a computer for each user, again, not what you seem to want to do.  Right now there are two other users logged in on my Sun workstation on the desk behind me...they are logged in because I permit them to do so.
And last night for an experiment I connected my iMac and MBP by ethernet wire, logged in on the iMac, then logged in on the MBP and from there on the iMac...but I set up the network to permit that and then disabled it again.  You can create security holes doing things like this.
As dwb points out switching from Apple to PC equipment is a false economy that lures in administrators.  In our county school system we had a superintendent who hired a good friend...who had PC-industry ties.  Decided to remove all Apple equipment from the elementary schools and switch to PCs.  It wasn't long before they ended up going on a 4-year cycle of "refreshing" the equipment, i.e., completely replacing all hardware in every school on a four year cycle.  Since my wife was a Media Specialist, aka librarian, and responsible for technology in her school, every four years she had to develop a complete school map of where each teacher wanted the computers in their classrooms, complicated by where the technicians predetermined the locations of the network wire drops, of course.  then teachers get shuffled over the summer and all the plans are for naught.
Anyway, there really isn't a solution to your problem except to buy a large number of computers and let each student use one and have them networked to a server, print server, printers, etc.  This is not inexpensive and cutting corners will only cause headaches for you.

  • Mac mini server on two different location

    Hi,
With my partner we are working on very havy image file from two different location. we wont to be able to share those file to each other easly and quickly mad make sur those file are allways up to date.
    - My first idea was to install in my place one mac mini server with external hard drive (RAID 0) and install the same server in my partner place. then I would like to create a VPN connexion between both Mac Mini server and setup a kind of RAID 1 between then. link that if my partner modify an image file on the server, With a short delay I will be able to see it on my side. this solution would be the best for me as all the data would be save in two different location and I would not have any backup issue.
I did not buy the MAC mini server yet but as soon that I know the best soluiton and that it is possilbe to do so I will buy it.
    - My second idea (if the first one is not possible or if you guy's convins me that my idea is stupide) would be to have one MAC Mini server in one location setup with an external hard drive in RAID 01. my partner will need to connect to this server through VPN. This solution seems to be a good option but my partner will need to copy the file in local to work on it (few Gb eatch file) and copy it back on the server when he finish to work on it.
With this solution I will also need to organise manual backup through another hard drive to avoid to have all our data in the same location.
Witch one of those solution seems the best and can work with MAC mini server? If you have another idea for my situation I m more then happy to read it.
Knowing that other user may need to access to my file, is the MAC Mini server VPN connection safe and fast?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Chris.

The fact that you are both working on multi-gigabyte
files, the statement BDAqua made about network speed
is a big issue.  Small incremental changes in a single
multi-gigabyte file still require that entire file to be transferred.
There in lies the big issue with network speeds.
Basically, it seems idea 1 will probably not work well and
besides, RAID is for local drives and not for over networks.
One solution to the synchronization issue is have a single
computer that has the application and the data and log into
it and work remotely.  However, it sounds like these are image
files and working and any kind of graphics over a remote
connection is problematic unless there is a very high speed
    network connection.
Second idea is the simple solution.  As for the backup, that
can be automated with backup software and the backup could be
    put any where.
