Must Power Off Message

Every once and awhile, a black error message box appears on my Macbook screen that says I need to power off and restart my mac. It is in several languages. I can't do anything until I power off and restart. Restarting brings my back to where I was.
Why does this happen?

Hi all:
Got a 3-yr old or there abouts G4 powermac mdd. Been a GREAT system, w/ no probs at all.
This morning, however, TWICE.....I got the msg on the monitor (in several languages) "you must power off your system".....or something to that affect.
Both times I complied immediately, & after the 1st time I did repair permissions. Haven't turned back on since the 2nd time.
What causes this? Is this a hardware or software issue? overheating??
would love to get some expert advice on this.

Hi-
The logs are generated automatically. As long as log clearing maintenance has not been performed since the panic, you should have a record.
Open Console, and look through the system logs for the panic log. Select Logs, and then click the triangle to expand /library/logs, and /var/logs.
Should be something in there somewhere.

Pop Up Screen-"must power off computer"

I have been experiencing freezing and random shut downs of my Macbook. I recently had a gray screen pop up that said I needed to power off my computer, where it did not allow me to do anything else but shut down. Now, I am having difficulty turning it back on. Do I have a virus? How can I fix this problem?

There are no known viruses for Mac - was the warning screen in several languages? If so, you were most likely experiencing a kernel panic.
If you will go to your Help menu in Finder menu bar and type in kernel panic, there will be information and instructions on how to proceed. If the computer will not start, try starting it in Safe Mode (excerpt from Apple Help):
Shut down and wait 10 seconds.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key (you should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before).
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator.
To leave Safe mode, restart the computer normally.
If the computer successfully starts in safe mode, choose Apple menu - Software update and then download and install any updates available.
Uninstall any plug-ins or other enhancement software from third parties.
Continue troubleshooting as per Apple Help. You might also want to read the following articles:

To be completely honest, FCPX is a RAM hog. It just is. But, RAM is relatively cheap, and the pay-off is good.
4GB is right on the edge, IMHO. 16G is ideal.

Power off message in iMac

It has happened twice that a black screen shows saying to power off the iMac by pressing and holding the power button. I happens right after I log in.
What could this be? Anyone has had this problem? Other than that, the iMac is working properly, is fairly new.

Something on your kit is causing a kernel panic. It could be caused by software that you installed or even a peripheral that you have attached.

Lid won't latch - powerbook won't wake from sleep, must power off and on -

the catch on the lid of this 12" Powerbook G4 does not come out when the lid is closed; it can be brought out with a small tool. what is going on? the computer does not wake from sleep eitherl, must be turned off with power button and then turned on. If only the display is set to sleep, then it wakes up as expected. Are the two related? Is this a case for resetting the Power Management Unit, I could not be sure from the Apple article.

Try starting up in Safe Mode, logging into your account, emptying Trash, then rebooting normally. I have found this helpful when I have had sleep problems with my Pismo.

Wouldn't hurt to try.
In terms of your latch, it is likely a mechanical problem. When the tongue is pulled out try putting a very small amount of lubricant on the tongue and working it back and forth.

IPad 2, few times daily must power off or cannot enter passcode. At times on Safari, it freaks out!

My iPad 2 was replaced in December 2011, ergo it's new. I was sold at a blatantly idiotic "Best Buy", where every Apple Rep at these locales should be terminated with extreme nastiness, plain "We will ignore you because we're misogynists and you're an older woman ergo we can do as we please, never ever never ever never have your model in stock[equating their termination in such a manner as 'we're sure it'd be convenient if you weren't terminated, and you're not getting 2 weeks notice, outta' heya' now], we'll sell you the improper equipment a lot because we as Apple Reps realize WOMEN AT YOUR AGE don't know the difference, it's ashame I'm an Electronics Tech Engr." back on point, I was sold an iPad 2 with WiFi, but it's a Verizon, my carrier is AT&T. I came in with much dollars that day. I shop knowing what I want bring lots of dollars and ask kindly, "May I have this and that, as well as the other, please ring it up I'll be going, thanks. I found out about the iPad about 3 months later because I only had been using it in my home on WiFi, found out there wasn't a SIM so it was Verizon. I've purchased 3 MacBooks, an iMac, an iPad 2, 2 iPhone 4's and an iPhone 4S, add it up. The iPad perhaps 3 times weekly while I'm on Safari, let's say I'm on "The Google", using it to check Reader, all of a sudden it brings up a new page on it may be Twitter, again it occurs and I'm finding I'm on an App then I'll wind up lastly on the appledotcom page, HUH? It's as if at times certain Corporocracys say "Our Ten Minutes", and the final page you land on is that Corp.!

Wow! Glad you got that all off your chest! Maybe you should talk to Best Buy about your cellular service problem. After all we are just users here eying to help each other and learn more about the iPad.

Mac mini will not complete shutdown-closes desktop, goes to blue screen, and spinning icon just spins forever, so must power off to reboot.

Recently, My Mac-mini will not complete the "shutdown" or "restart" routine; it closes the desktop screen, goes to the light blue screen, but then the spinning indicator (not the "wheel of death") just keeps spinning forever with no shutdown (I've let it spin for >2 hrs.). Have run disk/permissions verifications and repairs from applejack, disk utility, Mactuneup.app & all report ok. Any suggestions, please?

Problem solved.
Turns out that evidently the iPad Mini was dropped and the clear shell case for the back came off. It must have been put back on backwards so the On/Off Sleep/Wake button was being pressed by the case when held tightly... causing the "Slide to Power Off" message to show. This was discovered when the Smart Cover wouldn't stand the unit properly... But.. only after I guessed the Smart Cover was broken and I bought a new Smart Cover. The new red Smart cover didn't work any better than the previous blue one. Soooooo... I looked carefully at the unit and found that the clear back had been put on backwards!
Now, how do I turn this into a positive "teaching moment" with my spouse? Or, maybe after 53 years of marriage I'll just take credit for fixing it and getting her a beautiful new red cover!

A reset should help. Tap and hold the Home button and the On/Off button at the same time for approximately 10-15 seconds, until the Apple logo reappears. When the logo appears, release both buttons and await restart. No content will be affected.

First, press and hold the home and power buttons until the Apple icon appears.
The problem could be that you don't have enough storage on the device itself, not on iCloud. Go to Settings>General>Usage to see how much "Storage" you have available on the device. Farther down the list is the available storage on iCloud.
Also check:
Go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backups>Manage Storage; there, tap the device you need info on and the resulting screen lists Backup Options with which apps store data on iCloud as well. Tap Show All Apps to get the complete list of apps and MB used for backup storage.
A device needs many MB of storage in order to perform a backup to iCloud.

Solaris10 kernel messages every 30 minutes qlc power0n qlc power off

Running on a sunblade2000 solaris10. Every 30 minutes I see these messages qlc power on qlc power off LOOP On-line. Also after several hours the system shuts down and this occurred after installing the latest recommended patch cluster.

With the "Standard" dtpower settings, 30 minutes is the device idle time before power saving starts.
Do you have power saving enabled?
If so, does disabling power saving stop the problem?

Thanks to everyone who responded and related subject helped. Holding the home button and power button simultaneously for 10-15 seconds does unlock the screen. I can now use my ipad again. However, a futher problem has arisen since updating to IOS6 and activating icloud at same time, Although not sure if its related. The problem is that when connected to my PC the itunes message appears 'Cannot read ipad'. It instructs you to restore but keeps timing out after about 1 hour. This maybe internet issue but can't understand why itunes cannot read my ipad. May need to completely erase all content & reset. Or any other suggestions why this has happened?
