My computer just shuts down

My Mac just shuts down to a white or yellow or lined screen.  Doesn't matter if I am on the internet or not.  I am thinking it is the cooling fan, power supply...?????  any suggestions help please

2GB of RAM to run Mountain Lion 10.8.x is the absolute minimum, in order to have a better user experience a minimum of 4GB is recommended. Please post back with results after adding the additional RAM  you have ordered to your machine.
To learn more about RAM usage I would urge  you to read and use  Activity Monitor, you can learn more about AM at:

And maybe you don't talk to too many people but I've been on many forums on different websites where people have had similar problems and a lot of people in the store were having battery problems where they were draining too fast. What I learned is that all the people who did not download the updates are good. There phone is working the same. The people who have, they're having battery problems
I have downloaded every update and my battery life is better than any previous iPhone I have ever owned. I see posts from hundreds of people every day, and this is not a commonly reported problem. While there are a few random reports of battery problems, it is no more than I have seen for any other model or any other version of iOS in almost 8 years. Usually problems of rapid battery drain can be traced to bad apps (FaceBook is the worst offender) or corrupt data being synced from iCloud or other sources (gmail, Windows Live, Yahoo, etc).
The simple test is to restore the phone as New. Do not create any email accounts. Do not install any apps. Do not enable FaceTime or iMessage. Do not enable Twitter or any other social networking app. Use it for a day and check the battery usage. You will find that it is working well.
And also see this: http://www.overthought.org/blog/2014/the-ultimate-guide-to-solving-ios-battery-d rain. It is the best treatise I have seen on the subject of battery usage.

I just downloaded Lion and now my computer just shuts down for no reason. What is its problem?

I recently made the same mistake.  The thing to do is download the new Quicken Essentials for MAC.  After you install the new version follow the instructions on how to transfer your old files.  There is a way, it just takes a little time and, if I remember correctly, it takes the info from your quicken backup files. Hopefully you had auto back up on and your files are intact.  I didn't and reconstruction was a bear but entirely possible.  The new Quicken is quite different but seems to work quite well.  Good luck.

  • My computer just shuts down randomly

Does anyone know why my computer would just shut down randomly? I have know idea. I ran Disk Utilities, Tech Tool and Norton and found nothing wrong. Do I need to reinstall my system again? Any help would be great.

Have a look at the logs with the Console app, located in /Applications/Utilities. Look specifically at system.log and see if there are any entries in there around the time that the computer shuts down. Look for entries with "shutdown" in them.
Oh, and what Norton product do you have? They're notorious for causing more problems than they solve.

  • Every time I start up iPhoto and some other apps my computer just shuts down and restarts.

My Mac Book Pro 2010 is repeatedly shutting down whilst I'm using iPhoto mainly. It also happens with other apps occasionally and when it does I get this error message: 4MEM/61/40000000: Oxa4d73598 or something similar.

  • Why do I keep getting the mozilla crash report every time I try to open firefox. It won't open. One day my computer just shut down by itself and when I tried to reopen mozilla it wouldn't and I got this crash report.

On the crash report it gives me to options;restart firefox or quit. I've clicked on both of these and nothing has happened I just keep getting the crash report. I have tried uninstalling and installing and still nothing works.

  • Re: Satellite A215-S7444 just shuts down after one hour of usage

    I have a satellite A215-S7444.
My problem is that while i'm on the computer after about an hour or so the computer just shuts down.
I have already tried changing the power manegment settings which worked for awhile but my laptop still turns off after awhile.

    Hi Patrick
Im quite sure that your notebook shuts down automatically due to the high temperature inside the notebook.
Its a simply overheating issue which could be caused by clogged cooling grilles.
From time to time its advisable to clean the ventilators. Mostly the dust prevents the cooling modules from properly working and therefore the temperature increases.
I made good experience with the compressed air spray. Such sprays can be purchased from many computer/notebook dealers.
Additionally you could try to google for some online offers too.
    Bye

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

  • Your computer has shut down because of a problem

    Hi there,
I have a Macbook Air which is about 3 months old now, and in the last couple of months, applications have started hanging, the keyboard is sluggish in Safari, and more specifically, I've had loads of times when I've opened the lid after the machine has been on sleep, and received the message "Your computer has shut down because of a problem".
I've been on to Apple support, and they took me through how to repair disk permissions, reset the System Management Controller, and clear the caches. But I just had the same thing this morning.
The latest kernel panic from the Console is shown below - is anyone able to shed any light on this?

  • My computer keeps shutting down and I don't know what to do.

I purchased the student/ teacher version of the cloud membership/ design suite for os x and promptly began downloading the programs that I would use onto my macbook pro. I downloaded photoshop cs6, Bridge, Illustrator, and Acrabat. I havn't used anything but photoshop so far but I have encountered a serious problem. When I first got photoshop I would leave the application open by accedent and my computer started shutting down randomly but only about once a day. As I started using photoshop more I started closing the application when I wasn't using it but when I was the computer would shut down at some point during each project. I could deal with saving a lot as I go but now it shuts emediately every time so I can't use photoshop at all. Please can someone give me some advice, even if it is just to go to the apple store.

I had very similar behaviour occur when I purchased my first MacBrook Pro and it turned out to be a faulty Graphics Card.  Take it to the Genius Bar and see what they have to say.  If they don't know what's going and it's not a hardware issue, then we need to know a lot more to help you.  Please provide answers to the questions listed here: "FAQ: What information should I provide when asking a question on this forum?"

  • Won't Boot Up - Just Shuts Down

Hi all, I need some help.
I'm trying to build a new computer. I'm running the following:
    MSI865 Neo2
    Intel P4 3.0ghz
    2x512mb Kingston DDR400 Ram
    ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
    Antec Tru430w PS
    Maxtor 80gb SATA HD
Whenever i turn on the machine 5-15 seconds later it just turns off. Sometimes I get as far as seeing a message saying "BIOS Not Installed" then something about the Floppy Drive then it shuts off. If I try it again without waiting 5 minutes or so, the monitor doesn't even have time to turn on before it again, just shuts off.
I've checked all connections, tried reseating ram/video card/etc, and with only the video card and ram connected. I've also tried clearing the CMOS using the jumper the way the manual said to.
Please help, and thanks in advance for your replies.
P.S. On SATA HD's....do you need to plug in power to both sata & the standard 4pin? Also is there a special combination to use since with the 9800 pro needs a connection from the power supply to the card to the Hard Drive?

It always just shuts down after it tells me "BIOS Not Installed"
This implies you have the FIS2R board. This is the message from the Promise controller indicating it is not going to install it's bios since it didn't find a drive. Once you can get into the bios you can disable the Promise controller and get rid of the message.

No. This must be one of the SATA drives that has both connectors to ease transition.
Two beeps is either a memory error or a post failure. Try booting with only one stick of memory installed. If that doesn't work try the other stick. If that doesn't work try one stick in a different slot.

  • Computer Constantly Shutting Down

    In short:
The computer is a mid-2007 white MacBook. It has about 1G of RAM and a brand new 250GB hard drive.
The computer will turn on properly or the display will remain black. Sometimes the OS starts, other times it doesn't. When everything does start up properly, even with the computer connected to power, it will shut down after about five minutes of use.
Could it be the fan or the optical drive (which runs pretty hard when there is a DVD in it)?
I'm willing to put money into it. I want to learn how to refurbish this so I can keep my new one updated and running strong for as long as I want it to.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. She's a student away at school and this is her only computer. Her PC crapped out about a week after I bought my new MacBook, perfect timing, and now this one has.

I bought a new MacBook in December and gave my old one to my girlfriend. The old one was working just fine when I gave it to her. It was from mid-2007 and had no major problems (I went through a few batteries, but that was it).
Before I gave it to her I installed Snow Leopard on it. She started using it and it was working just fine for a few days until one day it just shut down on her. I figured she had just drained the battery but when it was plugged into the power (battery charging and everything) it would start up and then shut right back down again.
After multiple attempts, I finally got the computer to stay on long enough for me to wipe the hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard. The computer shut down again after about 20 minutes of use with the operating system re-installed.
Then I decided to take it to the Apple Store and ask a Genius for their help. The guy said it sounded like the hard drive and did the diagnostic report and, though, everything showed up good he was confident that if I put a new hard drive in it I'd get her running again.
I put the new hard drive in and even took off the top case and cleaned the dust out very carefully. It was dusty after three and a half years. I figured it might be overheating due to build-up if it wasn't the hard drive. So, I started the computer up with the install disc in and partitioned the hard drive as I should have and reinstalled Snow Leopard. Everything worked for a couple of hours. I used it as my own for a day and then, after I was confident that it was in working order again, shut it down to give back to my girlfriend.
When we started it up, we had the same problem again that we had before. Even though now she has a new hard drive and everything.
Any ideas? We'll take anything we can get and appreciate your help. These are such great products, the last thing I want to do is have to toss one out.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
