My first app in Apple app store & Android Market...

I've been building a large multiscreen app in Air for boating that's quite involved - it's been about 2 years in development.  I realized that I had no experience getting apps into the varous app stores so I made a small app and released it to the Apple app store and Android Market.  It was accepted in both places within two days.
When you drop an anchor on a boat for an overnight stay, it's very useful to know that the anchor isn't dragging along the sea floor.  If it is, it's a bad thing.  It needs immediate attention before you end up grounded, tipped over ashore, or worse.  Many navigation systems have an anchor alarm but they are often at the helm and away from the sleeping areas.  As with most things, your anchor is most apt to drag in the middle of the night when you're asleep since that is the worst possible time it could happen.
DragQueen is an anchor alarm that detects if your anchor is dragging.  Running on your phone or tab, it can be seated right next to you while you sleep.  If it detects any dragging, an alarm goes off and wakes you since there's almost no question you'll hear it.
Amazingly there have been 3,000 iOS downloads and yet only 400 Android ones.  It has 12 reviews on iOS with eleven 5-star ratings and one 4-star.  Strangely on Android it has two ratings, a 1- and a 3-star.  It doesn't freeze - I fear there is some game playing in the Android world.  I have not asked anyone to put up a fake review on iOS.  I've gotten dozens of emails of people actually using it on their boat including a couple of people who had the alarm go off and now owe me a beer.
DragQueen is free on both platforms.  It was a great learning experience.  It took much more time to get it into the stores than to write it (maybe 10 hours of development time versus at least 2 full days learning about the signing, submission process, store processing).  I'm looking forward to finishing the more major app for desktop, iOS, Android, PlayBook, and SmartTV.  It too will be free.
I did uncover a bug in Air/Android - you can't detect a deactivate when there is a geolocation update loop in process.  As a result, you can't turn off the GPS when the user switches out of your app.  I submitted the bug in bugbase but there hasn't been any action on it yet.

I have all but given up on the android store, the mindset on there is to never pay for anything. "All apps should be free" is the general mentality of an android market user. At first I thought it was just the attitude of an android user but after having decent success on the Amazon App Store and great success on the NOOK store I just think its the market and the no review system, its hard to get noticed with all the junk apps floating around and all the users expecting everything to be free.
As a side question to the original poster or anyone to whom this may pertain, why do people make quality, ad free apps? I dont get it, whats in it for them other than good vibes from the users? I understand free ad powered apps, and free lite apps but I can never figure out why people will use their talents and time to make an app thats totally free and has no ads? Anyone?

After upgraded my iPad (version-2) to new iOS7, I cannot install any apps from Apple App Store.  Usually there is a button "Free" (or whatever the price is), then changed to "Install" after clicked on it.  But that button is not available anymore.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
This works for some users. Not sure why.
Go to Settings>General>Date and Time> Set Automatically>Off. Set the date ahead by about a year. Then see if you can connect to the store.

  • Current MS Outlook app on Apple App Store

Is the MS Outlook app on the Apple App Store been updated or is it still the Accompli branded one?  If the app has been updated with addl security features, is there a comprehensive list of what features were added?

This looks like to be best list around:

  • ERROR ITMS-9000: Missing Code Signing Entitlements when adding app to Apple App Store

My client is getting the following error when sending my app (compiled in Flash Pro CC 2014 with AIR SDK 15.0.0.356) to the Apple app store:
ERROR ITMS-9000: "Missing Code Signing Entitlements. No entitlements found in bundle
    'com.xxxxxx.xx.xxx' for excutable 'payload/xxxxx.app./xxxx'.""
He is saying that I need to send them the entitlements file.
I can't find out any information about this with regards to Adobe Air compiled iOS apps, apart from this old post:
Adding iOS entitlements to AIR apps
which states that 'the packager configures the entitlements file '
Can anyone explain what might be missing here?
    Thanks,
    Alan.

It looks as if this problem is solved by doing step 2 from here:
    http://dev.mlsdigital.net/posts/how-to-resign-an-ios-app-from-external-developers/
It basically states that the client needs to produce the entitlements file and lists the following that the client will provide themselves:
    A “Mobile Provisioning Profile”
    An “Entitlements.plist”
    An “iOS Distribution Certificate”
iReSign OS X app (or you could use command line)
Hope this helps someone. We've run into quite a few problems trying to get the Flash Air compiled App to both enterprise and Apple Store as it can't come from us (the developers) it has to be signed and delivered from the client.

  • Can't download apps from Apple app store

When a user goes to download an app the app just sits at waiting/installing. Eventually it times out.  When I grep the access logs it shows the ipad bouncing from one apple server to another.   If I give the ipad a static ip address that goes around the ironport the app will install so I am pretty certain the problem on the WSA.  We have a S670 running a version of 7.7.

Ok so I opened a TAC case and all they could do is confirm it wasn't my wireless controller. I did however find out what was plaguing my network and hopefully this will help someone else. I found that there was a Mac OS X cache server on my network. For details on this see, http://www.nbalonso.com/os-x-server-caching/ Basically it registers with apple using our public IP and then any apple device on our network that try to download from apple from that same IP apple then points it back to the cache server on our network. The problem was that there were no routes back to that cache server as it was in someones lab. I was able to track down the server using a packet capture on my ASA to find out which device on my network was trying to reach lcdn-registration.apple.com/lcdn/register you can do an nslookup to see what the IP is, i don't know if it changes. Once I had the cache servers IP address I was able to trace the mac address back to the source and shutdown his network port. iOS downloads are now able to work again. The main problem was that iTunes, Mac, and even iOS 7 would try this but time out and then go download from apple anyways, iOS 8 however would never do get past looking for the cache server and the download would never start. Like I said I hope this helps someone else out there, apple implementation of a cache server is very poorly designed in my opinion if it can lead to this type of disruptive behavior.

  • ADF Mobile: Apple App Store: Encryption Registration Number for Sqlite

When submitting apps to Apple App Store, you have to declare whether or not your app uses encryption. This is for export compliance reasons. If you answer Yes, you need to provide an Encryption Registration Number (ERN). I assume that since the Sqlite DB in ADF Mobile is encrypted, I need to answer Yes. I've gotten a lot of differing opinions on this, but I'm looking for a definitive answer from either Apple or Oracle. Has anyone been through this already?
    Thanks

Hi, Mike, here is our response on this question. First thank you for your inquiry around Apple AppStore’s Encryption Export question. The exact question from Apple’s iTunesConnect portal is “Have you added or made changes to encryption features since you last uploaded a binary for this product?”. While we will do our best to suggest an answer based on our understanding of the situation, ultimately any answer that relates to an Apple process or website needs to come from Apple.
Our understanding of the question is that it pertains to the functionality or features of the application you developed using Oracle ADF Mobile and Apple iOS SDK, not to the capabilities of the development tools nor the framework. Furthermore, the question focus on changes between previous (there may be none) and current version of the application. Therefore, for the following scenarios:
    •     V1– no encrypted database nor secured SSL communication to the backend services.
o     Based on our understanding of the question, the answer would be “No” as you have not added any encryption feature.
    •     V2 – adds encrypted local database and/or secured SSL communication to backend service
o     Based on our understanding, the answer would be “Yes” as there are changes in the encryption features
    •     V3 – same database encryption and SSL communication as v2.
o     Based on our understanding, the answer would be “No” as there is no change in the encryption features between v2 and v3.
Hope this helps, and please let me know if you have any questions.
    Thanks,
    Joe Huang

  • Purchasing apps through Apple's web store without going through iTunes?

Is there any way to purchase iPad app without billing through iTunes account?
The reason is that I want to purchase the app through corporate's billing service, such as using a PO (purchase order) rather than through credit card. Is there an alternate way to purchase app through Apple's store in http://store.apple.com?

you could use *gift cards* (unless you live in Canada).

  • When you register your credit card for the first time in Mac App store, Does Apple put through a 1 dollar charge to verify the card ?

When you register your credit card for the first time in Mac App store, Does Apple put through a 1 dollar charge to verify the card ? Please I need this answer so as to download the latest Mountain Lion upgrade. Thnx in advance.

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
Many folks have reported that this is true. However, the charge is not taken to the second step of completing the charge and the $1 revolves back to your account.

  • Do I pay more to Adobe to launch on Apple App Store and Android App Store?

Hi, I'm going to be launching a new magazine very soon. I will be releasing it on the Apple App Store.
If I also want to release this on the Android App Store will this cost me anymore? Does my Publishing Suite Subscription cover both platforms, and would per issue downloading costs be covered across both platforms?
    Thanks.

That's great, thanks for the response.
One last thing to clear up my queries... As an agency, if we purchase the annual Professional or Enterprise Edition, does this allow us to launch as many publications (different apps) as we like, or do we need a different subscription for each of our clients?
    Thanks.

  • Selling on apple app store and android market at same time

I am trying to understand how it is possible to sell on the apple app store and android market at the same time? It seems there is a product ID per .folio, but if there are 2 different product ids for each store...how can I sell them?

You can use the same Product ID to sell the same folio (or the same folio renditions) in different stores. For your retail folio, use a lowercase Product ID, such as com.publisher.publication.monthyear. For the App Store, you specify this Product ID when setting up your in-app purchase. For Android Market (and later Amazon Appstore), you specify the same Product ID when setting up your in-app billing. When you publish the folio (or the folio renditions), you specify this same Product ID.
In my opinion, selling iPad 1024x768 folios on Android is problematic because the content will be scaled and letterboxed. Your customers will have a better experience if you set up renditions, such as 1024x768, 1024x600, and 1232x752. That way, your Xoom customers will get the 1232x752 folio, your iPad customers will get the 1024x768 folio, and your Fire/Galaxy Tab 7 customers will get the 1024x600 folio.
